        The Quadrupeds of North America

New York: Lockwood, 1870. hardcover. very good(+). 3 volumes. Illustrated with 155 glorious hand-colored lithographic plates, protected by tissue guards. xvi, 383, [1 blank]; [iv], 334; vi, 348 pages. Royal 8vo, bound in original full brown morocco with ornate blind-stamped decorative covers and spines; marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. (Beautiful bindings are slightly rubbed; virtually spotless interiors). New York: George R. Lockwood, (no date, circa 1870). Fourth octavo edition. The folio edition containing 150 plates was published between 1845-48. A supplementary volume with only 6 plates came in 1854. These were hastily followed by the octavo in 31 parts (1849-51-54), "A miniature copy of the large edition" as the Audubons described it. The bound octavo edition has the same dates and contains 155 plates, being all those from the original folio, plus 5 of the 6 from the supplement. This edition, circa 1870, is published by Lockwood who took possession of the lithographic stones after Audubon's bancruptcy. The quality of the plates were not diminished in these later printings. "In the 1830s, Audubon began to gather material for his Viviparous Quadrupeds...meant to complete his record of animal life in North America. The contributors to the project included John Bachman, a naturalist and Lutheran minister, who wrote all of the descriptions and acted as scientific editor for the work, and Audubon's two sons, John Woodhouse and Victor. With his sons, Audubon collected and drew specimens in the Eastern woodlands, Missouri, and the Rock Mountains, as well as in coastal regions of Florida and the East coast. Although Audubon's health and eyesight began to fail, he managed to complete 77 drawings before illness kept him from his work...Together, the three men, along with Bachman, produced an unequaled record of American wildlife. Like the Birds of America, the Quadrupeds are wonderfully animated, superbly rendered, and beautifully printed." Sabin 2368; Nissen 163; McGill/Wood 208; Bennett 5; Phillips Sporting 27; Meisel II 468.

        Plantes Agricoles

1870. DUPUIS, Aristide. Plantes Agricoles et Forestières. Two volumes including Atlas volume. [4], 566 pp. Atlas: 1 fol. (title), illustrated with 50 engraved plates with original publisher's hand-colouring, and each with leaf of letterpress description, 1 fol. (Table). Small folio, 272 x 172 mm, bound in original green cloth, glit-lettered spines. Paris: Abel Pilon, 1870 [-1872]. First Separate Edition of Dupuis' work on horticulture, illustrated with fifty hand-coloured plates of trees and fruit bearing plants. These volumes were taken from his seventeen-volume Le Règne Végétal (1864-1871), considered one of the finest and most comprehensive surveys of the plant kingdom. Compiled by a team of experts, namely Mssrs. Dupuis, Gérard, Reveil, and Hérincq, plus other authorities the work remained a standard reference for over 100 years. The fifty hand-coloured engravings plates are very well produced; the engravings were done by Oudet, Noel, Lebrun, and Debray, after original paintings by Maubert. These two volumes are complete in themselves. Augustin-Noël-Aristide Dupuis (1823-1883), the general editor of Le Règne Végétal, was a noted and prolific scientific writer who began teaching at the Institut Agricole de Grignon, Paris, in 1850; he was a frequent contributor to the Journal d'agriculture pratique and La Revue horticole, and published numerous volumes on general and medical botany, forestry and others (DBF gives a long list of his works). Binding with minor wear; text volume somewhat foxed; inner hinges a bit worn but sound; the plates are bright and clean. Plesch p. 214 (but not in the Plesch sale, Sotheby's, 1976). Pritzel 2545. Folio, 345 x 270 mm, bound in publisher's maroon pebbled cloth, stamped in gilt on covers and spine. New York: A.J. Bicknell & Co., [1871]. Bicknell's Village Builder offers contemporary designs, plans, and specifications for a wide range of public and private buildings from many parts of America, documenting that style of mixed Gothic, Romanesque, and classical cornices, pedestals, spires, and gables known as "Victorian." It depicts 45 buildings, including cottages, villas, suburban houses, town houses, a farm, a jail, courthouses, banks, store fronts, churches, and schools. Large-sized details show the principal corners and panels. The designs come from architects in Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, St. Louis, and Nashville, and were built in many large and small communities. Along with the illustrations of private homes and standard public buildings, there are plans for the first completely fireproof courthouse (built of marble and cast iron) in the United States, at Macoupin County, Illinois. The supplement depicts eighteen additional buildings. Some wear to the bindings, and volume one with new endpapers, but overall a fine set.

        Light for the Blind

1870. MOON, William. Light for the Blind. A History of the Origin and Success of Moon's Institution for Embossing and Circulating the Bible and other Books in Moon's Type for the Blind, in English and Foreign Languages. Together with: The Thirty-sixth Annual Report of Moon's Society. xi, 160, 40 pp. Illustrated with 4 lithographic plates, three of them embossed. 8vo., bound in publisher's blue cloth. Brighton: William Moon, n.d. |~||~||~| A presentation copy of William Moon's 'Light for the Blind', which was first issued in 1873. It gives details of the use of his embossed type for printing in several languages, which he had been doing since the 1840s, having gone completely blind himself at the beginning of that decade. Moon was an indefatigable campaigner for reading material for the blind, producing a monthly magazine, supporting home-teaching societies and lending libraries of his books, and travelling widely; the reports of his society bound at the end of this volume include a list of nearly one hundred cities with such societies and libraries. The Brighton Society for the Blind which he founded is still in existence, promoting his type which is easier to learn later in life than the more widely-used Braille. This version contains one of Moon's reports for 1884 bound in the rear. The three embossed plates consist of two alphabets and a map of the Brisish Isles. There are no copies of this edition recorded in OCLC. Inscribed 'Mrs Robinson, with the Christian regards of the author, October 18. 1884'. Garrison & Morton 5909.

JAPANESE ROMAN ALPHABET. Shinpan jinbutsu koamotegata. Yamaguchiya han. Colour woodblock print. 360 x 240 mm. Japan: ND [ca. 1870].|~||~||~||~||~||~||~||~||~| A charming Japanese woodblock depicting the roman alphabet formed from human figures and printed in five colours (yellow, red, purple and blue against a green background). Along with the various characters twisting and contorting to form the letters are four oval vignettes featuring a Japanese man and woman and two western men. The alphabet proceeds in the Japanese manner from right to left. The printing is somewhat unsophisticated which merely ads to it's whimsy. A rare object in fine condition.

1870. ZAHN, Wilhelm. Ornamente aller klassischen Kunst-Epochen nach den Originalen in ihren eigenthümlichen Farben dargestellt. Illustrated with 100 colour lithographic plates after Zahn. Folio, 447 x 310 mm, bound in contemporary German green morocco over marbled boards. Berlin: Dietrich Reimer, 1870. |~||~||~||~||~| Third Edition of a beautiful and important work first published in 1849 with the same number of plates, so popular as to be republished in this edition more than twenty years later. This is the most comprehensive in a series of publications by the artist and academician Wilhelm Zahn (1800-1871). This massive volume -- a monumental achievement of nineteenth-century colour printing -- contains one hundred plates based upon paintings made by the artist in situ. It includes facsimiles of decorations by Giulio Romano in the Palazzo del Te, Mantua; medieval mosaics in Sicily; antique vases; and, above all, Roman wall paintings from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Many of these works were reproduced for the first time by Zahn. His plates had a significant impact upon Neoclassicism in Germany. The author studied painting at the Academy in Kassel and in Paris with Baron Gros prior to his first trip to Italy in 1824. From the first his efforts gained the support of prominent artists such as Schinkel and Schnorr von Karolsfeld. His initial publication of Pompeian wall paintings, Neu entdeckte wandgemälde in Pompeij (Munich, 1828), was warmly praised by Goethe in Jahrbücher der Literatur (Vienna, 1830). Occasional foxing, but overall a clean copy. Thieme-Becker XXVI, 385. Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie XL, 668-670.

To The Independent Electors of the Borough of Newark

Saracen's Head, Newark: Weaver, 25 March, 1870. Printed broadside, 505 x 380 mm, small tear bottom left corner repaired. "our Colonies would be regarded as the natural outlet for our excessive population...'. A most unusual survival: a political broadside from the later career of Sir George Grey, seeking to capitalise on his Colonial experience.Although fresh from his ignominious recall from South Africa, Grey here announces his principles to the voters of Newark (Nottinghamshire), noting that 'as one to whom Her Majesty has repeatedly confided the important task of great dependencies, I take a deep interest in Imperial questions. I am opposed to the views of those who would advocate the severance of the Colonies from Great Britain, believing that they add to her strength, wealth, and glory... I have striven to initiate a policy of Emigration, by which... our Colonies would be regarded as the natural outlet for our excessive population...'.Grey, an explorer and politician, made his first Australian exploration in 1838 (having cadged a lift on HMS Beagle), and went on to have a long and important career in the colonies. He was the Governor of South Australia from 1841-45, of New Zealand from 1845-53, and of the the Cape Colony from 1854-68. The present document dates from his abortive attempt to force his way into the British Parliament in 1870 as a Gladstonian Liberal who, rather perversely, was not supported by Gladstone himself (the British Prime Minister came out in full-throated support for his opponent Sir Henry Storks). The failure of Grey's bid decided him to return to New Zealand the same year.

From Garfield?s library, a book authored and inscribed to him by Congressman Samuel S. Cox, who spearheaded legislation to create and expand the predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Life-Saving Service

The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below:Book Signed and Inscribed, ?Gen. Garfield - / With New Years? / Greeting - / from the author, / Saml S. Cox / 1 Jan 1870 / N.Y? on front free brown end paper, James A. Garfield Library bookplate on fixed end paper, 8vo, 442 pps., London: Sampson Low, Son, and Marston; New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1869. Lapis blue decorative boards stamped with black and gilt. Shelf wear and tears at spine caps. Cracked inner hinges and binding shaken, else good condition. Flaws easily restored. Samuel Sullivan Cox was in 1870, a Congressman from New York. He first served in Congress as a Democrat from Ohio, elected in 1856. He served three terms before being defeated largely due to his impassioned speech denouncing Republicans for supporting a pamphlet promoting miscegenation (inter-racial relations), a hoax later determined to have been conceived and printed by Democrats to influence racially biased voters to vote Democratic. The hoax was unsuccessful and Cox lost in the election. Cox left Ohio and moved to New York to practice law, and returned to Congress to represent New York?s 6th district in 1868. In Congress, Cox headed legislative efforts to create, organize, and expand the U.S. Life-Saving Service, a predecessor of the Coast Guard. It was established in 1871 to rescue victims of shipwrecks by maintaining patrol stations along American shores. Two years after his death, members of the Life-Saving Service presented Cox?s widow with an elaborate silver vase which she presented to the Smithsonian the following year.

The Collected Edition of the Novels and Tales by the Right Honorable B. Disraeli

      - London - Longmans, Green and Co., 1870 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of the writings of former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. Containing Lothair, Coningsby, or the New Generation, Sybil, or, The Two Nations, Contarini Fleming; The Rise of Iskander, Alroy; Ixion in Heaven; the Infernal Marriage, Popanilla, The Young Duke; Count Alarcos; and Vivian Grey. All new editions. Disraeli's writing is considered generally interesting, and his books teem with striking thoughts, shrewd maxims, and brilliant phrases which stick in the memory. Critic William Kuhn argued that much of his fiction can be read as the memoirs he never wrote, revealing the inner life of a politician for whom the norms of Victorian public life appeared to represent a social straitjacket particularly with regard to his allegedly ambiguous sexuality. Lothair was the first novel written by Benjamin Disraeli after his first term as Prime Minister. It deals with the comparative merits of the Catholic and Anglican churches as heirs of Judaism, and with the topical question of Italian unification. Though Lothair was a hugely popular work among 19th century readers, it now to some extent lies in the shadow of the same author's Coningsby and Sybil. Armorial bookplate of H. W. Eyres to front pastedown. Missing the frontispiece portrait of Disraeli. Containing eight volumes of ten only (missing are volumes IV and V (Tancred and Venetia)Condition: In decorative cloth bindings with gilt detailing. Externally, generally smart, though with some bumping and light wear to the heads and tails of the spines. Front hinges strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Pages are bright, though with some heavy spotting throughout. Overall:GOOD due to spotting, butstill an attractive set..

[?], 2. IV. 1870.. 3 S., 8°.. [An den österr. Chemiker u. -

History of England from The Fall of Wolsey to The Defeat of the Spanish Armada.

London. Longmans, Green, and Co. 1856- 1870. - 8vo. 22cm, first edition, in 12 volumes, bound contemporary in half crimson crushed morocco, gilt ruled raised bands, gilt decorations in the panels, gilt titles, marbled boards and endpapers, t.e.g., a fine set in attractive fine binding (N8) Froude (1818-1894), historian and miscellaneous writer, became a disciple of Carlyle and turned to writing historical and other essays for the Westminister Review, Fraser's Magazine (which he edited, 1860-74) and elsewhere. As a historian he was best known for his History of England. Froude believed (with his hero 'Carlyle'), that great men initiated and control events, and that the 'art' of history was to enter dramatically and imaginatively into what the historian thought was the successful 'force' of the time. Froude was a partisan historian, but his bias was avowed and therefore not really misleading. His dramatic treatment of history was, perhaps, especially successful in his 'Reign of Elizabeth'. The present work and his "The English in Ireland. 3v" were the centers of some controversy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
