Description of a Notation for the Logic of Relatives.

Welch Bigelow and Company, Cambridge 1870 - Memoirs of the American Academy, Vol. IX. TP + 1-62 + blank rear cover, Quarto, 9½" x 11¾", First Edition Offprint (Ketner P00052).The Rare Original Offprint of Description of a Notation for the Logic of Relatives.NOTE: Description of the Notation for the Logic of Relatives lacks the "Logic of Relatives" front cover (identical in type and appearance to the cover of Brief Description of the Algebra of Relatives - an item offered here separately) and has an unfortunate 1¼" x 6" cutout at the bottom of page 1 effecting the text on both pages 1 & 2. This deletion has been professional blended back into the text using a matching facsimile. The excision was made on page 2, neatly removing Peirce's footnote in which he introduces his important 'copula symbol' (-<) which he wrote was meant "to declare that the object of the term written before it is included under the object of the term written after it." For Peirce, reasoning is primarily and in its most elementary sense, reasoning about relations. This paper - and two other separately offered here - were ground-breaking papers contain important elements in his ongoing formulation of the foundational principles of modern logic in terms of those relations or, as he usually phrased it, their "relatives."Charles Sanders Peirce was the first American to take up the challenge of George Boole's program to find the mathematical laws of logic - a program that resulted in the formulation of today's modern logic. Peirce made numerous major contributions to this development between 1866 and 1914, but it was his technical papers written between 1867 and 1885 that established him as the greatest formal logician in the world and the most influential thinker to appear after Boole and before Ernst Schroeder. Peirce's papers can be notoriously difficult, but once Schroeder explicated them, they became well-known and widely influential in the field. DeMorgan, working on these same Boolean problems, founded the "algebra of relations" in an 1859 paper, but Peirce took his work and extended it much farther - while simultaneously expanding it into a powerful philosophical tool - beginning with this first 1870 paper: Description of a Notation for the Logic of Relatives. The paper radically modified, extended, and transformed Boolean algebra, making it applicable to propositions, relations, probability, and arithmetic. In this paper, Peirce laid the foundations of the logic of relations, the key technique for the logical analysis of mathematics, and invented the copula symbol of inclusion, the most important symbol in the logic of classes. Peirce, who was not known to be humble about himself or his work, commented in 1903: "In 1870, I made a contribution to this subject [logic] which nobody who masters the subject can deny was the most important excepting Boole's original work that ever has been made." (Peirce, Collected Papers, Volume III, p. 27; The Lowell Lectures of 1903.) Gathered and tied with original string utilizing three neat holes the center of the left edge. With just a bit of staining to the front cover (just below the bottom string hole) and in the upper right corner throughout, but getting lighter as the pages progress. With the excision described above professionally corrected with a matching facsimile text. Other than the unfortunate excision, this is remarkably well-preserved and handsome copy of this extremely rare piece by Charles Sanders Peirce. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

        Mystery of Edwin Drood, The

1870. first edition. A Spectacular First Edition of ?"Edwin Drood?" in the Original PartsDICKENS, Charles. The Mystery of Edwin Drood. With Twelve Illustrations by S.L. Fildes, and a Portrait. London: Chapman and Hall, [April-September] 1870.First edition of Dickens?'s final work, left unfinished at the time of his death. In the original six monthly parts, as issued. Octavo (8 13/16 x 5 9/16 inches; 223 x 142 mm.). vii, [1, ?"Illustrations?"], 190, [2, advertisements] pp. Frontispiece portrait of Dickens (?"Engraved by J.H. Baker, from a Photograph taken in 1868, by Mason & Co.?"), wood-engraved vignette title by J. Brown, and twelve wood-engraved plates, two by the firm of Dalziel Brothers, ten by Charles Roberts, all after Samuel Luke Fildes. This set collates complete except for the 8-page Chapman & Hall's Recent Publications (at the end of part V). Part No. 1 has a duplicate of the first advertisement at the rear "Dr. De Jongh's Light Brown Cod Liver Oil"; The rare and fragile ?"Cork Hats?" ad is present in part No. II, ?"a thin sheet of actual cork split to the substance of ordinary news-paper, on both sides of which is printed the publicity matter?"—this example has been well preserved with just some mainly marginal loss. The front wrapper to part No. VI is earliest issue, with a slip ?"Price Eighteenpence?" pasted over the originally printed ?"One Shilling?" rather than correctly printed. It also has the first Wilcox & Gibbs ad, with ?"Concerning Stitches?" on the first page.Original pale green printed wrappers. Small neat repair to the spine edge of lower cover of part V. The spines of the parts have been remarkably and almost invisibly restored (many years ago). Minimal foxing and edge wear. In spite of these flaws, this is a near mint copy—certainly one of the finest that we have ever seen. Housed in a later green buckram clamshell case.?"When Dickens died on June 9, 1870, he had completed only enough of his manuscript to make up six instalments, leaving unfinished a work which had commanded the widest attention for its opening numbers, and which promised to be one of his most effective and popular books. Although only three parts had been issued prior to his death, publication of the work continued, and on completion with Part 6 of all available material, the vast army of readers was left high and dry as to ?'The Mystery.?' The design for the front cover was by C.A. Collins (brother of Wilkie Collins), and therein are depicted eight incidents of the story, which it is frequently suggested have a bearing on the eventual solution. The Author during the writing of the story never disclosed the ultimate development of his plot?" (Hatton and Cleaver).Hatton and Cleaver, pp. 371-382.

Gratulationsschrift des Paedagogiums zu Basel. Inhalt: Beiträge zur Quellenkunde und Kritik des Laertius Diogenes (Festschrift of the Basel Paedagogium. Contents: Contribution to the Study and the Critique of the Sources of Diogenes Laertius).

Carl Schultze, Basel 1870 - TP + Dedication page + [1]-36 + 8, Small Quarto. First Edition in the Original Wraps (Schaberg 18). First Edition of Nietzsche's Festschrift in the Original Unprinted Wrappers. This privately printed article had an estimated printing of l00 copies. It was issued with a loose half-page cancel that is found pasted at the bottom half of page 3 in some copies. The cancel, even rarer than this private printing, is not present in this copy. The subject addressed here, the sources of Diogenes Laertius, was one that comprised almost two-thirds of Nietzsche's scholarly philological work. Diogenes Laertius, about whom little is known, was the author (or compiler) of The Lives and Sayings of the Greek Philosophers. Although much of his reporting has been deemed unreliable, he is among the very few sources of information that we have - even to this day -on the subject. Montaigne is quoted as having said, "Would that there had been a dozen Laertii." The rationale for Nietzsche's own interest in the subject is self-evident.One of Nietzsche's colleagues, F. D. Gerlach, was scheduled to retire from the Paedagogium in Basel where he had taught Latin for fifty years. The Paedagogium was a public school that had originally been a part of the university and Nietzsche was required to teach there six hours a week. Nietzsche prepared a special paper to be delivered in Gerlach's honor and dedicated it to the retiree. Arrangements were made to have copies of the lecture privately printed for distribution to guests at the celebration Interestingly enough-and indicative of life in academia-Gerlach, the recipient of the dedication, was a bitter opponent of Ritschl, Nietzsche's mentor, and had opposed Nietzsche's appointment to Basel. (Schaberg, The Nietzsche Canon, pp. 16-18) The original covers were obviously detached at some point, but are now firmly held place with a Japanese paper restoration. Original sewing seem to have been preserved. A few minor pencil markings and light foxing to some pages. A beautiful copy of a rare piece housed in a half-leather and marbled boards custom clamshell box. A pretty copy of this Nietzsche rarity. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. United States Capitol

1870 - Fine Large-format Photograph of the Capitol. This dramatic photograph of the United States Capitol shows the building ca. 1870, after the completion of the new dome and the extensions. The view shows the east side of the building, as seen from the northeast. There are signs of construction evident in the image, and a number of people and two horse-drawn carriages are visible. The photograph was taken within a few years of 1867, when the cheek blocks beside the Senate steps were installed. The photograph shows the rails for a street car system, for which termini were constructed on the Capitol grounds. Thomas Jefferson insisted the legislative building be called the “Capitol” rather than “Congress House.” The word “Capitol” comes from Latin and is associated with the Roman temple to Jupiter Optimus Maximus on Capitoline Hill. The name, which followed the example of Virginia’s House of Burgesses’ “Capitoll” authorized in 1699, signified the national aspirations for a republic steeped in the ancient Roman virtues of citizenship and self-government. During the Civil War some objected to continued construction of the building, but Lincoln insisted it continue, saying, “If people see the Capitol going on, it is a sign we intend the Union to go on.” On March 4, 1865, Lincoln delivered his Second Inaugural Address from the East Portico, visible here, declaring, “With malice toward none, with charity for all ” The U.S. Capitol is, apart from the Statue of Liberty, the greatest symbol of America and perhaps the nation’s most famous and most important single building. Albumen print, mounted. 15 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. Mount darkened, some darkening and minimal surface wear to image, but generally in very good condition.

MEMORIAL OF CYRUS W. FIELD.| TO THE SENATE AND HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE UNITED STATES IN CONGRESS ASSEMBLED:| THE MEMORIAL OF CYRUS W. FIELD, A CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES AND OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, RESPECTFULLY REPRESENTS:| 1. THAT HE IS DESIROUS OF FURNISHING INCREASED AND CHEAP FACILITIES FOR TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND THE WEST INDIA ISLANDS, AND TO THIS END HE DESIRES TO LAY, CONSTRUCT, LAND, MAINTAIN, AND OPERATE TELEGRAPHIC OR MAGNETIC LINES OR CABLES IN AND OVER THE WATERS, REEFS, ISLANDS, SHORES, AND LANDS WITHIN THE JURISDICTION OF THE UNITED STATES, FROM THE SHORES OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TO THE ISLAND OF CUBA; AND ALSO TO CONSTRUCT, MAINTAIN, AND OPERATE A LINE OR LINES OF TELEGR

Washington?: 1870 - Folio, 8.5" x 14". [3], [1 blank] pp, folded. Caption title [as issued]. A few old folds, minor dusting at edges, a few very tiny closed tears at center fold [no text loss]. Very Good. Field seeks to undo the International Ocean Telegraph Company's monopoly, which Florida and Spain had granted in 1866, for providing telegraphic communication between Florida and Cuba. The connection, completed in 1867, became a subsidiary of Western Union in 1873 and continued in operation well into the 20th century. Field accuses the Telegraph Company of "imposing a discriminatory charge upon all foreign business passing over its lines." He asks that Congress repeal the monopoly and prevail upon Spain to do the same. He offers immediately to construct land lines and lay cables to connect Cuba with Florida, and never to charge more than one quarter the rates imposed by the Telegraph Company. He further proposes to purchase the lines of the existing company, and to charge the press half-rate for messages "containing political and general news for publication." Souvenir de Varsovie

Warsaw: Fot. Brandel,, [c.1880s]. [Original portfolio with 26 mounted photographs.] Oblong quarto (329 x 250 mm). Original dark red pebble-grained cloth, titles and panelling to front board in gilt and blind, panelling to rear board in blind. 26 albumen photographs of various sizes (most approximately 105 x 145 mm), each individually mounted on cream card within light brown decorative borders, photographs captioned in Polish and French. Portfolio worn and soiled, cloth lightly cockled, occasional light foxing to mounts, photos slightly faded. In very good condition. An appealing collection of photographs of late 19th century Warsaw. The portfolio showcases key landmarks of the city, including buildings and monuments along the Royal Route, focusing especially on Nowy Swiat and Krakowskie Przedmiescie, as well as several views of the Lazienki Park and the Saxon Garden, the University of Warsaw and its Botanical Garden, the National Theatre, the City Hall, and Wilanów Palace. As such, the collection demonstrates some of the more outstanding baroque and rococo architecture of the city, including the Royal Castle and Sigismund's Column, the Square of Three Crosses, and the numerous churches along the Royal Route, such as the Church of the Holy Cross, St. Anne's Church, and the Church of St. Joseph of the Visitationists. Most likely produced in the 1880s, the photographs document several views and buildings that were partially or completely destroyed during World War II, including the Kronenberg Palace, the Kierbedzia Bridge, the remains of which was later used as foundation for the Slasko-Dabrowski Bridge, the historic Hotel Europejski, later rebuilt in stages throughout the 1950s, and the Summer Theatre, built in the Saxon Garden in 1870. Konrad Brandel (1838?-1920) first opened his studio at 1249 Nowy Swiat in 1865, focusing of portrait photography before expanding into topographic photography. The company received the silver medal for photography at the Wroclaw photographic exhibition Exhibition in Moscow in 1885.

Cloth spine.l Very rare and little known atlas and descriptive text volume on the human and general vertebrate nervous system, based on the early use of photos of sections.
