From Garfield?s library, a book authored and inscribed to him by Congressman Samuel S. Cox, who spearheaded legislation to create and expand the predecessor of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Life-Saving Service

The first Presidential memorial library, completed at the Lawnfield estate in Ohio by the widow of James Garfield four years after his assassination, houses almost 3,000 books that were used and treasured by the 20th president. Books were a scarce commodity to young James, who lost his father before the age of two, and was raised by his mother who struggled to maintain a humble existence. Both James Garfield and his wife Lucretia were voracious readers and amassed a large collection of books. Some twenty years ago, several dozen of his books were de-accessioned, and one of these books is described below:Book Signed and Inscribed, ?Gen. Garfield - / With New Years? / Greeting - / from the author, / Saml S. Cox / 1 Jan 1870 / N.Y? on front free brown end paper, James A. Garfield Library bookplate on fixed end paper, 8vo, 442 pps., London: Sampson Low, Son, and Marston; New York: D. Appleton & Co, 1869. Lapis blue decorative boards stamped with black and gilt. Shelf wear and tears at spine caps. Cracked inner hinges and binding shaken, else good condition. Flaws easily restored. Samuel Sullivan Cox was in 1870, a Congressman from New York. He first served in Congress as a Democrat from Ohio, elected in 1856. He served three terms before being defeated largely due to his impassioned speech denouncing Republicans for supporting a pamphlet promoting miscegenation (inter-racial relations), a hoax later determined to have been conceived and printed by Democrats to influence racially biased voters to vote Democratic. The hoax was unsuccessful and Cox lost in the election. Cox left Ohio and moved to New York to practice law, and returned to Congress to represent New York?s 6th district in 1868. In Congress, Cox headed legislative efforts to create, organize, and expand the U.S. Life-Saving Service, a predecessor of the Coast Guard. It was established in 1871 to rescue victims of shipwrecks by maintaining patrol stations along American shores. Two years after his death, members of the Life-Saving Service presented Cox?s widow with an elaborate silver vase which she presented to the Smithsonian the following year.

The Collected Edition of the Novels and Tales by the Right Honorable B. Disraeli

      - London - Longmans, Green and Co., 1870 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A collection of the writings of former Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. Containing Lothair, Coningsby, or the New Generation, Sybil, or, The Two Nations, Contarini Fleming; The Rise of Iskander, Alroy; Ixion in Heaven; the Infernal Marriage, Popanilla, The Young Duke; Count Alarcos; and Vivian Grey. All new editions. Disraeli's writing is considered generally interesting, and his books teem with striking thoughts, shrewd maxims, and brilliant phrases which stick in the memory. Critic William Kuhn argued that much of his fiction can be read as the memoirs he never wrote, revealing the inner life of a politician for whom the norms of Victorian public life appeared to represent a social straitjacket particularly with regard to his allegedly ambiguous sexuality. Lothair was the first novel written by Benjamin Disraeli after his first term as Prime Minister. It deals with the comparative merits of the Catholic and Anglican churches as heirs of Judaism, and with the topical question of Italian unification. Though Lothair was a hugely popular work among 19th century readers, it now to some extent lies in the shadow of the same author's Coningsby and Sybil. Armorial bookplate of H. W. Eyres to front pastedown. Missing the frontispiece portrait of Disraeli. Containing eight volumes of ten only (missing are volumes IV and V (Tancred and Venetia)Condition: In decorative cloth bindings with gilt detailing. Externally, generally smart, though with some bumping and light wear to the heads and tails of the spines. Front hinges strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although slightly strained in places. Pages are bright, though with some heavy spotting throughout. Overall:GOOD due to spotting, butstill an attractive set..

[?], 2. IV. 1870.. 3 S., 8°.. [An den österr. Chemiker u. -

Longmans, Green, and Co. 1856- 1870. - 8vo. 22cm, first edition, in 12 volumes, bound contemporary in half crimson crushed morocco, gilt ruled raised bands, gilt decorations in the panels, gilt titles, marbled boards and endpapers, t.e.g., a fine set in attractive fine binding (N8) Froude (1818-1894), historian and miscellaneous writer, became a disciple of Carlyle and turned to writing historical and other essays for the Westminister Review, Fraser's Magazine (which he edited, 1860-74) and elsewhere. As a historian he was best known for his History of England. Froude believed (with his hero 'Carlyle'), that great men initiated and control events, and that the 'art' of history was to enter dramatically and imaginatively into what the historian thought was the successful 'force' of the time. Froude was a partisan historian, but his bias was avowed and therefore not really misleading. His dramatic treatment of history was, perhaps, especially successful in his 'Reign of Elizabeth'. The present work and his "The English in Ireland. 3v" were the centers of some controversy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Eigenh. Brief m. Unterschrift.

Ischl, 20. VIII. 1870.. 4 S., Gr.-8°.. [An den österr. Chemiker u. -

OLD BELT, KNIFE, KNIFE SCABBARD, PISTOL HOLSTER WITH TWENTY-TWO .44 CALIBER BULLETS STILL IN THE GUN BELT

[n.p., n.d.]. 1870 - According to a facsimile typed letter dated August 21, 1920, that was signed by Historian and Author E. A. Brininstool, "this old belt, knife, knife scabbard and pistol holster were carried by a notorious horsethief who was shot and killed in South Dakota by Capt. George Bartlett, U.S. Deputy Marshal, in the early '80's. They were presented to me by Capt. Bartlett, and in turn are herewith presented to my good old pard, L. H. Spragle, to hang in his den as a memento of wild days on the frontier of Dakota. It will be observed that one shell is nicked on the head. Bartlett's bullet struck the shell, glanced off and went through the thief's body. The shells in this belt have never been taken out since the man was shot. E. A. Brininstool." In a second facsimile typed letter from Brininstool dated March, 21, 1921, the first paragraph says "Yep, you're right. You got that belt, holster and knife and scabbard. I did have the saddle, but had no place for it and sold it some years ago. I helped bury Bartlett here when he died some ten years ago or so, and my Indian stuff is the dope he had. Better hang on to this story and you have the goods to show along with it." L. H. Spragle and E. A. Brininstool first met in Reno in 1910 or so when they each were in the process of divorcing their wives. While the process was running its course they roomed together in a tent city and apparently had quite a time together. Spragle returned to Pennsylvania and he and Brininstool carried on a life-long friendship and correspondence. We find in an article by Jeff Gill some comments about Capt. George Bartlett but no references to the "notorious horsethief." Gill says ". a fascinating character named George E. Bartlett, a U.S. Marshall for Pine Ridge and a city west of there already infamous as Deadwood, South Dakota. Bartlett had worked as a sales representative for the gunpowder company owned by relatives of Warren Moorehead (his King family relations from Xenia, this apparently being the reason he and Bartlett knew each other in the first place), and also ran a small trading post of his own on a creek through part of the Pine Ridge Reservation.         Nizhniy-Novgorod.

ca.-80 1870 - Three-part panorama (15.3 x 61 cm). Albumen prints, fair tonal range and in good condition. By the mid-19th century, Nizhny-Novgorod was firmly established as the trade capital of the Russian Empire. The all-Russia industrial and art exhibition was held in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896. Other industries gradually developed, and by the dawn of the 20th century it was a first-rank industrial hub as well. Henry Ford helped build a large truck and tractor plant (GAZ) in the late 1920s, sending along engineers and mechanics, including future labour leader Walter Reuther Famous writer Maxim Gorky was born there in 1868. During his lifetime, the city was renamed Gorky following his return to the Soviet Union in 1932 on invitation of Joseph Stalin. The city bore his name until 1991. During that time, the city was closed to foreigners to safeguard the security of Soviet military research. An end to the "closed" status of the city has accompanied the reinstatement of the city's original name in 1990.

BACKGROUND: David Livingstone (19 March 1813 – 1 May 1873) was a Scottish Congregationalist pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society and an explorer in Africa. His meeting with H. M. Stanley on 10 November 1871 gave rise to the popular quotation "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Perhaps one of the most popular national heroes of the late 19th century in Victorian Britain, Livingstone had a mythic status, which operated on a number of interconnected levels: Protestant missionary martyr, working-class "rags to riches" inspirational story, scientific investigator and explorer, imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of commercial empire. His fame as an explorer helped drive forward the obsession with discovering the sources of the River Nile that formed the culmination of the classic period of European geographical discovery and colonial penetration of the African continent. At the same time his missionary travels, "disappearance" and death in Africa, and subsequent glorification as posthumous national hero in 1874 led to the founding of several major central African Christian missionary initiatives carried forward in the era of the European "Scramble for Africa".
