Two Victorian-Era Photocollage Books Belonging to the Michell Family of Yorkshire, England

England, 1870s and 1898. Hardcover. Very Good+. Two volumes. (1) Ornately gilt-stamped vellum over boards, gold-tone metal initials "S. M." and corner covers affixed to front board; 4to; approx. pp. [70], illustrated throughout with collages of original b/w photographs and full-color artwork and calligraphy, on heavy stock. (2) Brown leather boards, metal clasp at fore-edge, a. e. g.; 4to; approx. pp. [100], illustrated throughout with collages of original b/w photographs and full-color artwork and calligraphy, on heavy stock. Inscribed on the verso of the FFEP, "Mary Sophia Hood / from her Grandmother / Miss Michell / Byrn Siriol / Nov 26, 1898. It also features what appears to be "SM 1898" and the signature of Archibald Robert Michell. During the Victorian era, aristocratic women engaged in a hobby that is generally attributed to the avant-garde artists of the 20th century: mixed media collage. Within expensive leather-bound scrapbooks -- often with locks -- these women combined colorful painted inventions with photographs of family, friends, and locations to create entirely unique and often quite elaborate compositions. These two wonderful scrapbooks are both connected to the wealthy and connected Michell family of Yorkshire, England, and in many ways act as a genealogical history of the clan from the middle to the late 1890s. The first (in white leather) appears to have been created and owned by Sophia Michell, the only daughter of John and Sophia Michell. Within the pages of her album are cut-out photos of her parents and her six brothers, as well as her grandparents (the Farquahrsons), in-laws (the Garretts), lesser royals, and assorted cousins and acquaintances, with most of the images enclosed within elaborately painted framing devices. These imaginative lay-outs are augmented by beautifully hand-painted varieties of flora and fauna (as well as the family crest and motto). A possible clue to Sophia's interest (and obvious talent) in painting is the inclusion of two images of the notable Swiss painter Angelica Kauffman, who resided in England for many years and was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy. The second album appears to be a gift from Sophia to her goddaughter, Mary Sophia Hope, sent from the town of Bryn Siriol, Wales, in late 1898 (Sophia remained unmarried). Many of the photos seen in her own album have been included here, such as the elder Mr. and Mrs. Michell (Sophia's parents), but she has updated others, such as those of her brothers. John Michell, who died in 1878, is placed on an intricately framed page of his own, while on the following page, Sophia has included new photos of her remaining brothers, with the exception of Lancelot (who died in 1890) and Algernon Percy (the owner of Forcett Hall, whose absence is unexplained); Sophia herself appears on the next page, her large photo surrounded by colorfully painted gingko leaves. Mary Garrett Michell, the widow of John, is lovingly presented on her own decorated page, and two photos of Crakehall, which was the home of Mary Garrett Michell and her father following the death of her husband, are also included, indicating perhaps a special link to this side of the family. Images from Torquay, in the southeastern county of Devon, cathedrals, celebrity performers, and foreign countries also appear. In both albums, there are several unfinished illustrations and open spaces for photos that have been unfilled. The artist's hand appears to be the same in both albums -- outside of the telltale technical signifiers, there are repeated motifs and compositions -- but it is unclear as to why Sophia left the painted images incomplete, especially in the later album. Perhaps her intention with the latter was to have her goddaughter complete them, in order to continue a family tradition, but as these albums were usually a continuous work-in-progress, she may have simply become involved in other pursuits and interests. Truly unique, highly personal, and beautiful pieces of both family and Victorian history.

Magnificent 19th century autograph album featuring the signatures of four Presidents including Grant, Hayes, Arthur and Cleveland, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Vice President Alexander Stephens, as well as Walt Whitman, Henry Longfellow, John G. Whittier, Edwin Booth, William T. Sherman, and many others, including General Tom Thumb!

various, various. 4to.. "A late nineteenth century autograph album, Friendship's Album (Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., [c. 1870]) containing hundreds of signatures, most of which are added directly to one of its unpaginated leaves with some examples accomplished on cards or sheets of paper and mounted. The autograph book, which was presented to Oscar P. Smith of Washington by his mother in 1874, constitutes a who's-who of late 19th century America. The album includes the signatures of four U.S. Presidents: Ulysses S. Grant (likely as President), Grover Cleveland (as President), Rutherford B. Hayes (likely as President), Chester A. Arthur (2 as President), as well as the former Confederate President Jefferson Davis (ALS, May 30, 1879), and his Vice President, Alexander Stephens. The album also contains numerous political and military personalities including Robert Todd Lincoln (2), William T. Sherman (2), Edwin Stanton, James G. Blaine, John Pope, Wade Hampton, John Belknap, John A. Logan, John M. Schofield, Hamilton Fish, Nelson A. Miles, Francis Spinner, Alphonso Taft, William M. Evarts, John Sherman, Charles Shurz, Charles J. Folger, E. D. Townshend, George Bancroft, Nelson A. Miles, Hugh McCulloch and many others as well as some notable industrialists such as Ferdinand de Lesseps and S. B. Chittenden. Diplomats include British Ambassador Edward Thornton, Russian ambassador Nikoli Pavlovich Shishkin, Japanese ambassador Kiyonari Yoshida, and Chinese Ambassador Chen Lanbin. Smith collected beyond the political and military, and acquired the signatures of prominent men of letters in his collection including most notably Walt Whitman, as well as William Cullum Bryant (ALS, November 7, 1877), Henry Longfellow (ANS, June 4, 1879), Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. (ALS May 14, 1879),and John G. Whittier. Actors include Edwin Booth, Harry Davenport, Helena Modjeska, Joseph Jefferson, Maggie Mitchell, E. A. Sothern (2), Olive Logan, and Kate Claxton. Smith also appears to have been a fan of the opera and Carlotta Patti, as well as her sister Adelina Patti (with a lengthy inscription), together with Annie Louise Cary, Bianca Donadio, Clara Louise Kellogg, Adelaide Ristori, Emma Abbott. Smith did not limit his collecting to the highbrow as one page early in the album features a superb assemblage of P.T. Barnum's 'exhibits' including Charles S. Stratton (a.k.a. ""General Tom Thumb""), Lavinia Warren (a.k.a. 'Mrs. General Tom Thumb), Commodore Nutt and his wife, Minnie Warren, as well as Col. Rough Goshen (a.k.a. The Middlebush Giant). A generation or two later, one of the previous owners made a half-hearted attempt to continue the collection and inserted two cards signed by Secretary of State George C. Marshal. This is one of the finest autograph albums from the period which we have encountered. "

        The Heathen Chinee

Chicago.: The Western News Company.. 1870.. 9 loose black and white lithographs, 7 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches, with original decorative envelope (7 3/4 x 6 inches). Light soiling, edge tears and wear to envelope, plus previous owner's name and date (July 3 1871) in ink and pencil to front cover. Toning to first sheet, otherwise very clean and bright. The lithographic printing of this set is particularly strong. A superior example of this unusual set. This is the first printing of the first independent (pirated) issue of Harte's poem, which first appeared as "Plain Language from Truthful James" in the September 1870 issue of the Overland Monthly( which Harte edited). Harte evidently wrote the poem as a space-filler and a satire on the anti-Chinese immigration sentiments of the Irish immigrant community, as expressed by the card sharp Bill Nye on sheet 6, "we are ruined by chinese cheap labor." In fact it was to have the opposite from desired effect (see the excellent article by Gary Scharnhorst "Ways That Are Dark": Appropriations of Bret Harte's "Plain Language from Truthful James" in Nineteenth-Century Literature, Volume 51, No. 3 December 1996.) Hull's illustrations added fuel to the popular racist reading of the poem, embellishing the poem with a scene of mob violence. .

Collection of Photographs, Clippings, Documents and Accounts Relating to Brooks Shipyard, East Boston

About thirty-five 8 x 10 photographic prints of John Brooks, the shipyard building, half hulls and vessels built by the yard between 1870 and 1905. Also, a list of vessels built at the yard under its several owners, an envelope of related clippings and documents, and a day book of shipyard activity 1874 - 1882. In his definitive work "Portrait of a Port" historian William Bunting refers to John Brooks as a "master builder." Bunting uses the photograph of Brooks in front of his office in the book, and writes, "Shipbuilder John Brooks poses in the doorway of his classic East Boston office at 334 Border Street. His yard, in the background, occupied a portion of the grounds of the old Donald McKay yard... Brooks served as McKay's foreman for six years... [he] was the last of the old time Boston shipbuilders."

Group of photographs and ephemera relating to automotive pioneer George Baldwin Selden

      c. 1870-1920. Hardcover. Very Good+. This collection includes (1) a family photo album depicting Selden circa 1885; (2) a carte-de-visite of Selden circa 1871; (3) three handsome mounted albumen photographs circa 1910, presumably depicting Selden cars; (4) a later photograph of a Selden motor truck; (5) a photostat copy of a legal illustration, "Comparative Scale Drawings of Selden Vehicle"; and (6) a 1920 company pamphlet titled "Yesterday Today Tomorrow." The photo album (1), contains 18 cartes-de-visite, showing men, women, and children, identified by name (in a contemporary hand, in ink); family names include Woodruff, Tomlinson, Sayre, Drake, Rogers and -- of course -- Seldon. The single carte-de-visite of Seldon (2), was taken by O. F. Weaver of Chicago; a handwritten notation on the verso indicates that it was taken in 1871 as the fire of October 8, 1870, "closed his business venture barrel hoop machinery." The mounted albumen photos (3) range in size from 5.75x7.5 to about 7.5x9.5 inches, in excellent condition, on heavy dark grey mounts with wide margins; showing a couple or a group of gents in Selden cars; it is charminging to see onlookers peering from the windows of the building in the background. A single photograph, c. 1915, 6.5x4 inches, shows a Selden motor truck (4), loaded with Brass Goods from Henry Wray and Sons. Photostat copy (5) of a legal illustration (18.5x7.5 inches, with flattened creases from folding, and a little smudging), shows comparative scale drawings of Selden Vehicle, with 2 H. P. Engine of Selden, and of Brayton, Otto, Otto-Langen, and Lenoir; showing single- and 3-cylinder engines, and listing the weight, speed, and horsepower of the engine. The company pamphlet (6) offers of 4 different Selden trucks, plus text. George Baldwin Selden (1846-1922) invented an early lightweight combustion engine intended for use in a four-wheeled vehicle, and applied for a patent in 1879. This gives him some claim to be the inventor of the automobile. The patent went through years of legal challenges before being granted in 1895, and then faced further decades of lawsuits from Henry Ford and others, eventually suffering defeat in 1911. In the meantime, he launched the Selden Motor Vehicle Company in 1905, moving into truck manufacture after his patent defeat. (Selden trucks are shown in the aformentioned pamphlet, "Yesterday Today Tomorrow.")

Half green chagrin, front cover with monogram LB in gilt, spine lettered in gilt; lower compartment of spine chipped with loss of leather, some bumping. All the drawings in excellent condition, with the exception of inconsequential traces of foxing. An uncommonly finely drawn and large album of aquarelle drawings portraying Ecuadorians (mainly from Quito) in local costumes, performing trades, and assisting celebrations; a considerable amount is dedicated to the native population, as some others represent criollos in full attire. Each drawing has a caption in both Spanish and French, explaining the drawing and locating geographically where the image was captured (Quito, Napo, Otavalo, Gualea, Latacunga). Two aspects from this album are worthy of standing out, the high artistic quality not normally seen in these types of drawings, and that the attention to detail and realism contained in each drawing hints that it was made in situ. Some of the captions are: India vendiendo carne, India vendiendo papas, India prioste de la Corona de Jesus, Indios sahumeriantes en procesion, Indio vendiendo alhajas, Indie de Latacunga vendiendo Manteca, Mujer hilando, Mujer hacienda encajes, Indio e India carniceros, Aguador, Vendedora de leche y mantequilla. The collection as a whole is an invaluable link to Ecuador´s iconography, both for the vast array of costumes shown, as for the high quality of the drawings. Although anonymous, the accomplished renderings tell us of a skilled artist, probably local. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1870. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1870. 2 pp undated preliminary ads, plus 4+4 pp terminal ads dated October 1870. Original buff printed wrappers. Early (second) American edition, published in late September, about three weeks after Fields Osgood's edition -- and about three months after Dickens's death in June left this tale unfinished. Harper had been serializing DROOD in parts (as a monthly Dickens supplement to their Harper's Weekly); this likely explains why their first complete edition (as here) is so scarce -- people had already read the tale serially.~The front wrapper, reading "Price Twenty-five Cents," looks just like a parts issue wrapper (with scenes from the tale); the preliminary ads include a listing of Harper's Library of Select Novels that ends with #349 (a later issue of this Harper's book is as #502 in that "library"). Both the terminal ads and the rear wrapper bear the date October 1870.~This copy still has its original wrappers and ads, though it appears to have once been bound up into a more-substantial binding. Condition is good-to-very good (early repairs made to the spine and to some corners of the wrappers, also to the hinges of a few leaves). Curiously not in Podeschi (Yale); Carr (UTexas) B279.

1870 - With Illustrations. Boston: Fields, Osgood, & Co., 1870. Original terra-cotta cloth. First American Edition of the tale left unfinished at the time of Dickens's death in June 1870. In addition to DROOD, this volume includes James T. Fields's introductory "Some Memories of Charles Dickens," plus Dickens's "George Silverman's Explanation," "Holiday Romance," "Sketches of Young Couples," "New Uncommercial Samples" plus "The Will of Charles Dickens." Since 1867, Ticknor & Fields (and then Fields Osgood) had been Dickens's authorized publisher in America; they had serialized DROOD in their weekly Every Saturday, and then published this book in early September. (Ticknor & Fields had specifically commissioned Dickens to write "Holiday Romance," so that it could appear in their children's periodical Our Young Folks in 1868.) Harper also serialized DROOD in a monthly Dickens supplement to Harper's Weekly, but did not get their book edition out until late September.~This copy is in the original cloth, and is in very good condition (some foxing on the leaves, very minor external wear). A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone novel.         THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD in Harper's Weekly

1870. In: six "Dickens Supplements" of Harper's Weekly. New York: [Harper & Brothers], April-October 1870. Original newspaper-style supplement sections. Very early (perhaps first) American appearance, in six serial parts -- running about simultaneously with Fields Osgood's serialization in Every Saturday; in London, the six serial parts were published from April through September, so these followed right after. Each of the six sections is called "The Dickens Supplement" -- price "gratuitous"; the first one consists of eight pages, and includes a brief biography and a portrait of Dickens; the other five consist of four pages (one folded folio leaf). The six issues are April 23, May 21, [Dickens died on June 9, leaving DROOD unfinished], June 25, July 23, August 27 and October 1. Included are seven illustrations, one of which is the wrapper design for the London parts.~The six supplements are in very good condition, with some wear on the delicate spines (it appears the supplements may once have been bound up, and slightly trimmed). Podeschi (Yale) E107-108.
