[Halifax or Bermuda, 1870. Oblong folio. Contemporary album of embossed cloth, rebacked and recornered in calf, gilt-lettered leather label ("West Indies") on front board. Some light spotting, but in very good condition. In a folding box, leather label. An album of exceedingly rare lithographic views of scenes in the West Indies and North America. Though unattributed, these lithographs are after original drawings by Vice Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe of the British Royal Navy. The drawings were made by him while he was Commander in Chief of the North American and West Indies Station from 1870 to 1874, and we believe the lithographs to have been made about the same time. Vice Admiral Fanshawe (1814-1906) was the son of a distinguished general and the grandson of naval commander Robert Fanshawe, who served with Admiral John Byron. Fanshawe attended the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth and entered the navy in December 1828. He served in the Mediterranean, India, and in the home and Lisbon stations. In 1841 he was promoted to commander and was sent to the East Indies, where he earned acclaim for reducing a pirate stronghold at Borneo. He then served in the Pacific, in the Baltic during the Crimean War, and again in the Mediterranean. In 1863 he was promoted to Rear Admiral, and two years later was made a Lord of the Admiralty. In 1870, Fanshawe was promoted to Vice Admiral and was appointed Commander in Chief of the North American and West Indies Station, a position he held until 1874. Following that he was president of the Royal Naval College, then Commander in Chief at Portsmouth until his retirement in 1879. Vice Admiral Fanshawe was an accomplished artist who painted and sketched throughout his long career in the navy. The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich holds several paintings by Fanshawe, as well as an album of lithographic views after his sketches in the West Indies, North America, and Borneo (presented to the Museum in 1951). When Fanshawe was appointed Commander in Chief of the North American and West Indies Station in September in 1870, he sailed with his family for Halifax, Nova Scotia. Joining him was his son (a future Admiral of the Fleet), Arthur Fanshawe, as his flag lieutenant. The Fanshawes mainly lived at Admiralty House, Halifax in the summer and at Clarence Hill, Bermuda in the winter. During the winters Fanshawe took regular cruises around the West Indies to show the flag, visit British stations, and conduct fleet exercises. Among the places visited were Demerara, Trinidad, St. Vincent, Martinique, Barbados, Antigua, Jamaica (a yearly occurrence), and Cuba. He also visited the United States and Canada, taking his flagship, the Royal Alfred, to Annapolis and meeting with President Grant in Washington, as well as visiting Quebec, Ottawa, and Niagara Falls. Nearly all the lithographs in the present album match the lithographs as captioned and described in the Fanshawe album of views in the West Indies, North America, and Borneo at the National Maritime Museum (NMM). In their cataloguing of that album of lithographs, the NMM states: "It can only be assumed [Fanshawe] made the drawings that are the basis of the West Indian and American lithographs: who turned them into prints and when is unknown. It is not impossible he did so himself later but perhaps unlikely: his son Evelyn might be another possibility, since he was also an amateur photographer." We surmise the lithographs were created from Fanshawe's drawings while he was Commander in Chief in North America, and that they were likely made in either Halifax (where he summered) or Bermuda (where he wintered). In all there are forty views in the present album, including depictions of Bermuda, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Antigua, Trinidad, Tobago, and elsewhere in the West Indies. A few of the views are of North America and include views of Niagara Falls and the St. Lawrence River. The views included in the album are as follows: 1) "From Signal Hill, - Bermuda." 2) Untitled, showing a coastal fortress with sailboats and a canoe circling it. 3) "St. Salvador." Captioned in pencil. 4) "Court House. Berbice." 5) "Bocca Grande Trinidad." 6) "Rockly Bay. Tobago." 7) "Forte King George Tobago." 8) "U. Point of Man of War Bay." 9) "Man of War Bay. Tobago." 10) "Courtam. Tobago." 11) "Fort George. Grenada." 12) "Grenada." 13) "Bay of Cariacou Grenadines." Captioned in pencil. 14) "Dorsetshire Hill. St. Vincents." 15) "Berkshire Hill and Kingstown. St. Vincents." 16) "From Marne Fortune St. Lucia." 17) "Pigeon Island." 18) "The Pitons St. Lucia." 19) "Roseau. Dominica." 20) "Dows Hill. Antigua." 21) "From Shirley Heights. Antigua." 22) "Freemans Bay." 23) "Falmouth Bay. Antigua." 24) "Basse terre. St. Kitts." 25) "Entrance of the Harbour of St. Thomas's." 26) "Kingston Bay from Ft. Nugent - Jamaica." 27) "Off Morant. Jamaica." 28) "Kingston Bay. From near Port Royal. Jamaica." 29) "Port Antonio - Jamaica." 30) "Rio Bueno. Jamaica." 31) "Staten Island." 32) "7 Miles West of Gannequis." 33) "Falls at Montmorenci." 34) "Lake St. Peters. St. Laurence." 35) "Falls of Niagara." 36) "Riviere de Loup." 37) "Looking up Niagara River from near Fort George." 38) "Iceberg." 39) "St. Ann's Church." 40) "Near By Town." Apparently Ottawa. An outstanding album of rare and accomplished lithographic views in the West Indies and North America, by the British commanding Admiral of the North American and West Indies Station.

Vulgate Bible; decorated thirteenth-century Spanish manuscript on parchment

DECORATED MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPT IN LATIN ON PARCHMENT, Spain, Kingdom of Castile (Seville?), c. 1240-1260. 172 x 123 mm. 328 folios on parchment, missing five leaves and two quires, else complete (collation, i2 ii6 iii-vii12 viii-xi14 xii13 [of 18, 14 through 18 cancelled with no loss of text] xiii-xxiii12 xxiv11 [of 12, 9 is lacking with loss of text] xxv12 xxvi6 [of 10, 7 through 10 lacking with loss of text] xxvii14 xxviii4), copied by at least three scribes with varying two-column layouts, all ruled in lead: 1, catchwords, written on 56 lines in a small upright Gothic bookhand with some documentary/cursive features; 2, quire signatures, written on 58 lines in a very tiny precise Gothic bookhand; 3, catchwords, written on 54 lines in a small precise Gothic bookhand, red and blue running titles and Roman numerals numbering th chapters, verses sometimes daubed with red, chapters begin with 1-line initials in red or blue or 2-line initials in red or blue with contrasting pen decoration, NUMEROUS VERY FINE PEN INITIALS preceding prologues and each book of the Bible, 3- to 16-line in red or blue (or parted with red and blue) with contrasting pen decoration, often with touches of green or pale yellow wash. BINDING: Bound in fifteenth-century Spanish or Italian brown leather, blind-tooled with large compartments with intersecting diagonal double fillets forming numerous small compartments, each enclosing a small round stamp, all over beveled wooden boards (possibly original?) with rounded edges, cut flush with the bookblock, sewn on five bands of tawed leather (split or double) pegged into channels cut into inside board, formerly with two straps and catches, front to back (partial remains of one strap, front board), rebacked, housed in red leather fitted slip case, tooled in gold and lettered on the spine, ?"MSS. Bible / 13th Century,?" with protective folded inner covering. TEXT: This is a rare example of a thirteenth-century portable Bible copied in Spain. Small Bibles containing both Old and New Testaments were copied in great numbers in thirteenth-century France (particularly Paris), England, and Italy, but Spanish Bibles of this type are significantly less common and await full scholarly study. This Bible demonstrates a knowledge of many of the up-to-date features of the Paris Bible, but it does not follow the text of that Bible and was probably copied from locally available exemplars. PROVENANCE: Written in Spain in the middle of the thirteenth century, c. 1240-1260. The distinctive pen decoration link this to other Bibles made in Castile, and the medieval binding is probably also Spanish. This was used by Franciscans early on and was likely made for Franciscan use. An ownership note suggests that the book was then owned by Dominican friars, posibly in Italy (Urbino?). Marginal annotations by several thirteenth- to fifteenth-century hands reflect interests of early owners; one has compared the text with the Hebrew. Belonged to John S. Doney; his extensive notes on inside front cover and f. 1 signed and dated 1 June 1870. Belonged to Charles V. Wheeler of Washington, DC; sold by Walpole Galleries, 29 July 1919, lot 594. Belonged to Coella Lindsay Ricketts (1859-1941), calligrapher and illuminator of Chicago, Illinois. Belonged to Otto Orren Fisher (d. 1961?); his bookplate inside back cover. CONDITION: Several small holes in back and front covers, bottom half of the final leaf cut away with no loss of text, but overall in very good condition. Full description and photographs available (TM 844).

        The Vicar of Bullhampton.

By Anthony Trollope. With thirty illustrations by H. Woods. London: Bradbury, Evans, and Co., 11, Bouverie Street, 1870. Demy 8vo, gathered irregularly in eights and sixes (v. note); wood-engraved frontispiece with conjugate vignette title-page, twenty-two inserted plates with tissue guards, and eleven vignettes printed in the text; 10pp. integral advertisements at end; pp.xvi (including frontispiece and title-leaf)+481+[i (blank)]+[x (not paginated)]; smooth brown cloth, blocked black on sides and spine, pictorially blocked gilt on front cover, blocked and lettered gilt on spine; t.e. uncut, fore-edges lightly trimmed; end-papers faced grey. Slight wear to head and tail of spine, with slight loss of gilt to top rule; slight marginal foxing to one plate; otherwise a very nice copy. Scarce thus. A volume too heavy for its binding, which is seldom found to-day in its original cloth - and rarely in nice state. Sadleir, ?'Trollope?', 32: Sadleir?'s ?'A?' issue (preferred) with the advertisements corresponding to those of the parts issue. In this copy the plate to p.245 has a full-stop after ?'in?' instead of a comma, whilst that to p.311 lacks the closing inverted commas: both points noted by Sadleir as characteristic of the book issue rather than copies bound up from the parts. One or two light pencilled corrections have been made using proofing marks, which suggests that this may at some point have been a publisher?'s copy. The book was never reprinted in its original form, but a reset edition was published in 1871. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.

Yankton, 1870. Colored frontispiece map. Modern half cloth and paper boards. Very clean and fresh internally. Fine. One of the earliest works on the Dakota-Wyoming frontier, and among the first locally printed works on Dakota Territory and on gold in the Black Hills. "Batchelder compiled this report in response to numerous requests from acquaintances in the East. The section on railroads, pp.40-43, states that in August 1870, Dakota has not yet a line of railroads, but describes the Northern Pacific railroad which is to pass through the territory, and gives a list of other projected roads" - Streeter. Batchelder was the Secretary of Dakota Territory, and this work covers the early history and exploration of the region, Indians, climate, soil, produce, stock raising, mineral resources, and investment possibilities. A "Map of Dakota in Miniature" is the frontispiece. The first letter of each section of text is printed with a large, stylized initial, quite unusual for an early frontier imprint.

        EL LIBRO ROJO.

Mexico. 1870. - [2],153pp. plus lithograph titlepage and thirty-eight lithographed plates (at least one with hand coloring). Large folio. Brown publisher's morocco, stamped in black and gilt, gilt dentelles, a.e.g. Hinges rubbed, corners lightly rubbed. Some light scattered foxing, but generally quite clean. Very good. An elaborate 19th-century Mexican lithographic book, issued on a grand scale with large lithographs after drawings by Primitivo Miranda, depicting a pantheon of martyrs of the Mexican nation. Riva Palacio and Payno were noted intellectuals and with this book they clearly sought to immortalize those who had sacrificed their lives for the nation, thus the title LIBRO ROJO or Red Book, signifying the bloodshed throughout Mexican history. Interestingly, many of the plates depict horrors inflicted either by Spaniards or by the Mexican Inquisition. Depicted here are Moctezuma II, Cuauhtemoc, Martin Cortez, Pedro de Alvarado, la familia Carabajal, la familia Dongo, Hidalgo, Allende, Morelos, Guerrero, Los Marires de Tacubaya and Maximilian. The plate titled "La Peste (1577)" is partially colored and depicts a country village in Mexico affected by the plague. The lithographs are by Hernadez and Iriarte, the whole printed by Diaz de Leon y White. A rare complete copy of this unusual lithographic book, here in a beautiful binding and in very nice condition.

Group of photographs and ephemera relating to automotive pioneer George Baldwin Selden

      c. 1870-1920 - This collection includes (1) a family photo album depicting Selden circa 1885; (2) a carte-de-visite of Selden circa 1871; (3) three handsome mounted albumen photographs circa 1910, presumably depicting Selden cars; (4) a later photograph of a Selden motor truck; (5) a photostat copy of a legal illustration, "Comparative Scale Drawings of Selden Vehicle"; and (6) a 1920 company pamphlet titled "Yesterday Today Tomorrow." The photo album (1), contains 18 cartes-de-visite, showing men, women, and children, identified by name (in a contemporary hand, in ink); family names include Woodruff, Tomlinson, Sayre, Drake, Rogers and -- of course -- Seldon. The single carte-de-visite of Seldon (2), was taken by O. F. Weaver of Chicago; a handwritten notation on the verso indicates that it was taken in 1871 as the fire of October 8, 1870, "closed his business venture barrel hoop machinery." The mounted albumen photos (3) range in size from 5.75x7.5 to about 7.5x9.5 inches, in excellent condition, on heavy dark grey mounts with wide margins; showing a couple or a group of gents in Selden cars; it is charminging to see onlookers peering from the windows of the building in the background. A single photograph, c. 1915, 6.5x4 inches, shows a Selden motor truck (4), loaded with Brass Goods from Henry Wray and Sons. Photostat copy (5) of a legal illustration (18.5x7.5 inches, with flattened creases from folding, and a little smudging), shows comparative scale drawings of Selden Vehicle, with 2 H. P. Engine of Selden, and of Brayton, Otto, Otto-Langen, and Lenoir; showing single- and 3-cylinder engines, and listing the weight, speed, and horsepower of the engine. The company pamphlet (6) offers of 4 different Selden trucks, plus text. George Baldwin Selden (1846-1922) invented an early lightweight combustion engine intended for use in a four-wheeled vehicle, and applied for a patent in 1879. This gives him some claim to be the inventor of the automobile. The patent went through years of legal challenges before being granted in 1895, and then faced further decades of lawsuits from Henry Ford and others, eventually suffering defeat in 1911. In the meantime, he launched the Selden Motor Vehicle Company in 1905, moving into truck manufacture after his patent defeat. (Selden trucks are shown in the aformentioned pamphlet, "Yesterday Today Tomorrow.") [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Leggi e Memorie Venete Sulla Prostituzione fino alla caduta della republica. A spese del conte di Orford

Venice: Tipografia del commercio di Marco Visentini, 1870. Sole edition, copy 149 of 150. Four mounted photographic plates after Veronese, two lithographed plates. [iv], viii, 399, [blank] pp. Folio. Original olive morocco, spine and upper cover gilt with the lion of St Mark as centrepiece. Sole edition, copy 149 of 150. Four mounted photographic plates after Veronese, two lithographed plates. [iv], viii, 399, [blank] pp. Folio. Streetwalkers in Venice. The role of prostitution in Venetian society was such that in 1358, the Grand Council of Venice declared it "absolutely indispensable to the world" (Richards, 125). This remarkable publication is a history of prostitution in Venice from the Renaissance to the fall of the Venetian republic in 1797. Although the author is identified as Horatio Walpole, it was in fact compiled for him by Giovanni Battista Lorenzi of the Biblioteca Marciana. Drawing on the earlier scholarship of Maier and Daru, and inspired by the interest of Byron and others, Lorenzi collects a wealth of information relating to Venetian prostitutes and courtesans. Beginning with a list of the most famous sixteenth century courtesans (as found in a contemporary printed guide), the work includes a compilation of the laws relating to prostitution enacted in the Republic from the year 1232 onwards, augmented with explanatory notes where needed. For example, prostitutes were especially forbidden from wearing masks in gondolas. From these, and from court judgments that accompany them, we get a detailed picture both of the activities of courtesans and their clients, and of the ways in which these activities were regulated, tolerated (or not), and dealt with by the legal authorities over the course of several centuries. We also find trial reports and transcripts, and details of the sentences passed on various prostitutes (including Sicile Polacea, "meretrice Ebrea e ruffiana", from the Ghetto), and clients (including Fra Innocente Gritti of the Convent of S. Stefano, "pei suoi dissoluti costumi"). Included with this copy is a handwritten list, possibly in Walpole's hand, of the people and institutions in England to whom copies were to be sent. It certainly made it to the British Museum, other intended recipients included Disraeli, the Lord Chief Justice, Ferdinand de Rothschild and the Prince of Wales. Richards, Jeffrey.

Ma di questo si / parlerebbe. Vostro tutto Gius M". - "As I have said since we have met for / the first time, I cannot deny that the thought / occurs to me often: ' If we see that / the rising of Piac. shows the opportunity for / the cities of Italy, why could the rising of / Genova not do the same thing?' I cannot stop to repeat / this thought; but I do not see any more in it. The friend will let you know from the Officer that I saw him / this morning. As soon as I have news, I will let you know. In / case you believe you will make up your mind to act, let me know / without delay. I will then give a proclamation and I will / see you immediately. Obviously, the Government is afraid. And it does not / dare to cling to measures which were repres-/sive before. There is agitation, as you know, even in / the crushed. Still, the Government presents the stimulus for / us. And this could maybe change / the plan and give more importance to my / idea of attacking the wings, procuring weapons and / then leading the concentrated and excited forces to / a victory over the centre.         Eigenh. Manuskript "Ein Weltbund des Deutschtums".

      O. O. u. D. - 16 SS. 8vo.

To The Independent Electors of the Borough of Newark

Weaver, 25 March, Saracen's Head, Newark 1870 - Printed broadside, 505 x 380 mm, small tear bottom left corner repaired. A most unusual survival: a political broadside from the later career of Sir George Grey, seeking to capitalise on his Colonial experience.Although fresh from his ignominious recall from South Africa, Grey here announces his principles to the voters of Newark (Nottinghamshire), noting that 'as one to whom Her Majesty has repeatedly confided the important task of great dependencies, I take a deep interest in Imperial questions. I am opposed to the views of those who would advocate the severance of the Colonies from Great Britain, believing that they add to her strength, wealth, and glory? I have striven to initiate a policy of Emigration, by which? our Colonies would be regarded as the natural outlet for our excessive population?'.Grey, an explorer and politician, made his first Australian exploration in 1838 (having cadged a lift on HMS Beagle), and went on to have a long and important career in the colonies. He was the Governor of South Australia from 1841-45, of New Zealand from 1845-53, and of the the Cape Colony from 1854-68. The present document dates from his abortive attempt to force his way into the British Parliament in 1870 as a Gladstonian Liberal who, rather perversely, was not supported by Gladstone himself (the British Prime Minister came out in full-throated support for his opponent Sir Henry Storks). The failure of Grey's bid decided him to return to New Zealand the same year.

HISTORY OF DON QUIXOTE. The Text Edited by J. W. Clark and A Biographical Notice of Cervantes, by T. Teignmouth Shore

London Cassell, Petter, and Galpin [c. 1870] - A very early issue of this wonderfully illustrated Cervantes. With 118 spectacular illustrations by by Gustave Doré. Royal 4to (12 x 9 inches approx.), in a very fine, English binding of deluxe dark green morocco, the covers ornately framed in gilt featuring thick beautifully roll-tooled band-, frame- and panel-work surrounded by multi-ruled gilt lines with small rosette corners gilt, inner ruled in blind and gilt, the spine very richly gilt decorated in compartments between wide gilt-ruled raised bands, the compartments feature fine and elaborate gilt panel work incorporated multiple tools, one compartment lettered in gilt, board edges gilt tooled, fine marbled endpapers and a.e.g. xxviii, 737 pp. A very handsome and sturdy copy, internally fresh with only a bit of very occasional minor spotting, much less then typically found, the binding is very strong and well preserved, beautiful and of fine craftsmanship. AN UNUSUALLY HANDSOME COPY. VERY SCARCE IN SUCH WELL PRESERVED CONDITION. Gustave Doré was one of the greatest illustrators of his day. His grand and magnificent style is a perfect complement for Cervantes heroic tale. This massive tome is one of our favorite printings of the Spanish classic and, because of the weight of the text block, is usually found broken and loose. This copy is as sturdy as one could hope for and is very handsome despite some wear to the binding. A great compliment to any fine library and a must for the collector of 19th century illustrated books. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Story of the Volsungs & Niblungs with Certain Songs from the Elder Edda

London: F.S. Ellis, 1870. Inscribed by William Morris to Algernon Swinburne. Translated from the Icelandic by Eirikr Magusson and William Morris. First edition, one of 750 copies. 4 pp, of adverts at the rear. 8vo., original elaborately gilt patterned dark green cloth designed by Morris, gilt lettering, untrimmed. Cloth worn at the bottom edge and spine with a 1inch piece missing from the top of the spine, some waterstaining limited to the endpapers and tape repairs to the rear hinge. Still a good sound copy with an incredible association, housed in a green cloth clam-shell box. Inscribed on the half-title "Algernon Charles Swinburne/from his friend William Morris".
