Upon the the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in the summer of 1870., President Grant issued a proclamation in August, 1870, declaring a policy of U.S. neutrality toward France and the North German Federation and its allies. In the enclosed porclamation of October 8, Grant further outlines that policy, declaring that "any frequenting and use of the waters within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States by the armed vessels of either belligerent ... must be regarded as unfriendly and offensive..." In departmental letter from the the U.S. Treasurer to his customs officials, Boutwell enjoins his staff "to aid in the execution of those parts of the Proclamation which relate to the stay and departure of the armed vessels of the belligerents. Any violation of the Proclamation which shall come to your knowledge you will at once make known to the District Attorney of your District, and also report the same to the Secretary of the Treasury by letter, or by telegraph ...".

        Italienische Villen. Eigenhändige Übersetzungen und Durchzeichnungen nach Percier & Fontaine, Choix des plus célèbres maisons de plaisance de Rome et des ses environs, Paris 1824.

      Nicht signiert und datiert; wohl Berlin, nach 1870. - Folio (34 : 21.5 cm) 8 Bl., das letzte weiß. Mit 8 montierten Bleistiftzeichnungen auf Transparentpapier, 1 laviert. Busse (1834-96) besuchte die Berliner Baukademie. Ab 1857 nahm er an der Restaurierung des Halberstädter Doms teil, legte 1863 das Baumeisterexamen ab und erhielt den Schinkelpreis. Schon seit 1862 war er unter Stüler an der Planung der Nationalgalerie beteiligt, die er nach dessen Tod 1865 kurzfristig weiterführte. Busse wurde 1866 mit dem Ausbau, ab 1879 mit dem Neubau der Preußischen Staatsdruckerei (später Reichsdruckerei) beauftragt, deren Leitung er 1872 übernahm. 1881-83 baute Busse das Hertzberg-Schloß Britz (Neukölln) im Stil der Neorenaissance um. - Das vorliegende Heft stammt aus einem Nachlaßkonvolut Busses. Auf dem Deckblatt hat Busse die 24 von Percier & Fontaine behandelten Villen mit Ortsbezeichnung und Erbauungsjahr notiert. Vier sind mit dem Vermerk ?s. umstehend? oder ?s. hinten? gekennzeichnet: Casino Colonna, Villa Pia, Villa Altieri und Schlößchen Caprarola. Ihre Beschreibungen übersetzt er im Auszug und fügt Grundrisse mit Legenden sowie Ansichten in Durchzeichnungen hinzu. Der blattgroße Anlagenplan der Villa Pia ist laviert. - Der Hüllbogen im Falz eingerissen, die Pauspapiere mit etwas Durchschlag zur Gegenseite gebräunt, zwei im Rand eingerissen. Ansonsten sauber erhalten. Geheftet. - Beiliegend 4 lose Bl. mit 6 weiteren montierten Durchzeichnungen italienischer Kirchenfassaden und Architekturdetails nach A. Soller und G. L. Runge. Die Bogenränder werden dadurch zwar ungleich, aber das Satzbild steht gerade. Um infolge der ungleichen Ränder ein späteres zu starkes Beschneiden mit der Maschine zu vermeiden, werden die Bogen einzeln, vorne und unten, mit der Pappschere auf ein Mittelmaß rauh beschnitten. Dadurch wird der Druckrand weitestgehend geschont. Als erste und letzte Lage wird dem Buche zum Schutze eine leere Papierlage hinzugefügt, welche mit einem feinen Leinen- oder echten Japanpapierfalz versehen ist. Geheftet wird der Handband nach sorgfältiger Auswahl des Heftzwirnes auf echten erhabenen oder aufgedrehten flachen Bünden und auf Pergamentriemchen (welche beim Pergamentbande durch den Rücken gezogen werden). Bei Dünndruckpapier werden die Lagen zum Heften leicht vorgeritzt. Ein Einsägen oder gar Einraspeln der Bünde findet nicht statt. Oben wird das Buch beschnitten und erhält nicht nur der Schönheit willen Goldschnitt, sondern diese feine Metallschicht schützt vielmehr die dem Lichte und Staub am meisten ausgesetzte Schnittfläche vor deren schädlichen Einflüssen. Die Deckel werden in einem tiefen Falz angesetzt, mit den Bünden nach außen. Ein Herausreißen aus der Decke ist somit nur unter Zuhilfenahme von Werkzeug möglich. Zum Kapital wird kein schlappes maschinengewebtes Bändchen verwendet, sondern das Kapital wird von Hand mit dem Buchblock umstochen, gibt dadurch dem Rücken einen festen Abschluß und bietet zugleich dem späteren Ledereinschlag ("Häubchen") die Unterlage. Als Einbandmaterial kommen sumachgares, lichtechtes Saffian, Kalbleder, vereinzelt auch Rindsleder, ferner naturelles und weißes Schweinsleder sowie Kalbspergament zur Verwendung. Ein mit der Hand hergestelltes, dazupassendes Überzugpapier sowie Handvergoldung oder Blinddruck am Rücken ergänzen das Werk nach außen. Ein solcher Einband entspricht allen Anforderungen, die an einen Gebrauchsband gestellt werden können." TP + 1-62 + blank rear cover, Quarto, 9½" x 11¾", First Edition Offprint (Ketner P00052).The Rare Original Offprint of Description of a Notation for the Logic of Relatives.NOTE: Description of the Notation for the Logic of Relatives lacks the "Logic of Relatives" front cover (identical in type and appearance to the cover of Brief Description of the Algebra of Relatives - an item offered here separately) and has an unfortunate 1¼" x 6" cutout at the bottom of page 1 effecting the text on both pages 1 & 2. This deletion has been professional blended back into the text using a matching facsimile. The excision was made on page 2, neatly removing Peirce's footnote in which he introduces his important 'copula symbol' (-<) which he wrote was meant "to declare that the object of the term written before it is included under the object of the term written after it." For Peirce, reasoning is primarily and in its most elementary sense, reasoning about relations. This paper - and two other separately offered here - were ground-breaking papers contain important elements in his ongoing formulation of the foundational principles of modern logic in terms of those relations or, as he usually phrased it, their "relatives."Charles Sanders Peirce was the first American to take up the challenge of George Boole's program to find the mathematical laws of logic - a program that resulted in the formulation of today's modern logic. Peirce made numerous major contributions to this development between 1866 and 1914, but it was his technical papers written between 1867 and 1885 that established him as the greatest formal logician in the world and the most influential thinker to appear after Boole and before Ernst Schroeder. Peirce's papers can be notoriously difficult, but once Schroeder explicated them, they became well-known and widely influential in the field. DeMorgan, working on these same Boolean problems, founded the "algebra of relations" in an 1859 paper, but Peirce took his work and extended it much farther - while simultaneously expanding it into a powerful philosophical tool - beginning with this first 1870 paper: Description of a Notation for the Logic of Relatives. The paper radically modified, extended, and transformed Boolean algebra, making it applicable to propositions, relations, probability, and arithmetic. In this paper, Peirce laid the foundations of the logic of relations, the key technique for the logical analysis of mathematics, and invented the copula symbol of inclusion, the most important symbol in the logic of classes. Peirce, who was not known to be humble about himself or his work, commented in 1903: "In 1870, I made a contribution to this subject [logic] which nobody who masters the subject can deny was the most important excepting Boole's original work that ever has been made." (Peirce, Collected Papers, Volume III, p. 27; The Lowell Lectures of 1903.) Gathered and tied with original string utilizing three neat holes the center of the left edge. With just a bit of staining to the front cover (just below the bottom string hole) and in the upper right corner throughout, but getting lighter as the pages progress. With the excision described above professionally corrected with a matching facsimile text. The first sequence is a voyages from India to Scotland which took place in 1869-1870 and started in southern India. The earliest watercolours, dated the 27th October 1869, show views of Tellicherry (Thalassery) and Cannonore (Kannur) on the Malabar coast of south-west India. In May 1870 the artist was on his/her voyage to Europe via the Red Sea, which is illustrated with a view of a sunrise over Mt. Horeb (Sinai) and two views of Cape Guardafui in Somalia. One of the captions noted that this voyage was made aboard the S.S. Hooghly, a vessel of the renowned French maritime company Messagerie Impériale, which was founded in 1851 and specialized in voyages from France to India, Ceylon and South-East Asia through the Suez Canal. This voyage was a very early one through the Suez Canal as the canal had only been completed in November 1869.       1870 - Fine Large-format Photograph of the Capitol. This dramatic photograph of the United States Capitol shows the building ca. 1870, after the completion of the new dome and the extensions. The view shows the east side of the building, as seen from the northeast. There are signs of construction evident in the image, and a number of people and two horse-drawn carriages are visible. The photograph was taken within a few years of 1867, when the cheek blocks beside the Senate steps were installed. The photograph shows the rails for a street car system, for which termini were constructed on the Capitol grounds. Thomas Jefferson insisted the legislative building be called the &#147;Capitol&#148; rather than &#147;Congress House.&#148; The word &#147;Capitol&#148; comes from Latin and is associated with the Roman temple to Jupiter Optimus Maximus on Capitoline Hill. The name, which followed the example of Virginia&#146;s House of Burgesses&#146; &#147;Capitoll&#148; authorized in 1699, signified the national aspirations for a republic steeped in the ancient Roman virtues of citizenship and self-government. During the Civil War some objected to continued construction of the building, but Lincoln insisted it continue, saying, &#147;If people see the Capitol going on, it is a sign we intend the Union to go on.&#148; On March 4, 1865, Lincoln delivered his Second Inaugural Address from the East Portico, visible here, declaring, &#147;With malice toward none, with charity for all &#148; The U.S. Capitol is, apart from the Statue of Liberty, the greatest symbol of America and perhaps the nation&#146;s most famous and most important single building. Bel exemplaire. Le Journal illustré est un journal hebdomadaire français créé en février 1864. Il est conçu sur le modèle du Penny Illustrated Paper sorti en 1861 en Angleterre. Il est illustré de grandes gravures sur bois et traite de sujets magazine en huit pages au format 27 x 37,5 cm. Quelques années plus tard, il est intégré au groupe de presse du Petit Journal. Conçu pour concurrencer L'Illustration qui est vendu 75 centimes, Le Journal illustré est vendu 10 centimes. Il disparut en 1899 quand le supplément illustré du Petit journal, illustré en couleur, appartenant au même groupe et vendu depuis 1890, le supplanta. Nombreuses collaborations, dont Louise de Mauléon, Francisque Sarcey, Jules Moinaux... Nombreuses compositions et dessins.

Original dark red pebble-grained cloth, titles and panelling to front board in gilt and blind, panelling to rear board in blind. 26 albumen photographs of various sizes (most approximately 105 x 145 mm), each individually mounted on cream card within light brown decorative borders, photographs captioned in Polish and French. Portfolio worn and soiled, cloth lightly cockled, occasional light foxing to mounts, photos slightly faded. In very good condition. An appealing collection of photographs of late 19th century Warsaw. The portfolio showcases key landmarks of the city, including buildings and monuments along the Royal Route, focusing especially on Nowy Swiat and Krakowskie Przedmiescie, as well as several views of the Lazienki Park and the Saxon Garden, the University of Warsaw and its Botanical Garden, the National Theatre, the City Hall, and Wilanów Palace. As such, the collection demonstrates some of the more outstanding baroque and rococo architecture of the city, including the Royal Castle and Sigismund's Column, the Square of Three Crosses, and the numerous churches along the Royal Route, such as the Church of the Holy Cross, St. Anne's Church, and the Church of St. Joseph of the Visitationists. Most likely produced in the 1880s, the photographs document several views and buildings that were partially or completely destroyed during World War II, including the Kronenberg Palace, the Kierbedzia Bridge, the remains of which was later used as foundation for the Slasko-Dabrowski Bridge, the historic Hotel Europejski, later rebuilt in stages throughout the 1950s, and the Summer Theatre, built in the Saxon Garden in 1870. Konrad Brandel (1838?-1920) first opened his studio at 1249 Nowy Swiat in 1865, focusing of portrait photography before expanding into topographic photography. The company received the silver medal for photography at the Wroclaw photographic exhibition Exhibition in Moscow in 1885.
