        United States Capitol

1870 - Fine Large-format Photograph of the Capitol. This dramatic photograph of the United States Capitol shows the building ca. 1870, after the completion of the new dome and the extensions. The view shows the east side of the building, as seen from the northeast. There are signs of construction evident in the image, and a number of people and two horse-drawn carriages are visible. The photograph was taken within a few years of 1867, when the cheek blocks beside the Senate steps were installed. The photograph shows the rails for a street car system, for which termini were constructed on the Capitol grounds. Thomas Jefferson insisted the legislative building be called the “Capitol” rather than “Congress House.” The word “Capitol” comes from Latin and is associated with the Roman temple to Jupiter Optimus Maximus on Capitoline Hill. The name, which followed the example of Virginia’s House of Burgesses’ “Capitoll” authorized in 1699, signified the national aspirations for a republic steeped in the ancient Roman virtues of citizenship and self-government. During the Civil War some objected to continued construction of the building, but Lincoln insisted it continue, saying, “If people see the Capitol going on, it is a sign we intend the Union to go on.” On March 4, 1865, Lincoln delivered his Second Inaugural Address from the East Portico, visible here, declaring, “With malice toward none, with charity for all ” The U.S. Capitol is, apart from the Statue of Liberty, the greatest symbol of America and perhaps the nation’s most famous and most important single building. Albumen print, mounted. 15 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. Mount darkened, some darkening and minimal surface wear to image, but generally in very good condition.

        Souvenir de Varsovie

Warsaw: Fot. Brandel,, [c.1880s]. [Original portfolio with 26 mounted photographs.] Oblong quarto (329 x 250 mm). Original dark red pebble-grained cloth, titles and panelling to front board in gilt and blind, panelling to rear board in blind. 26 albumen photographs of various sizes (most approximately 105 x 145 mm), each individually mounted on cream card within light brown decorative borders, photographs captioned in Polish and French. Portfolio worn and soiled, cloth lightly cockled, occasional light foxing to mounts, photos slightly faded. In very good condition. An appealing collection of photographs of late 19th century Warsaw. The portfolio showcases key landmarks of the city, including buildings and monuments along the Royal Route, focusing especially on Nowy Swiat and Krakowskie Przedmiescie, as well as several views of the Lazienki Park and the Saxon Garden, the University of Warsaw and its Botanical Garden, the National Theatre, the City Hall, and Wilanów Palace. As such, the collection demonstrates some of the more outstanding baroque and rococo architecture of the city, including the Royal Castle and Sigismund's Column, the Square of Three Crosses, and the numerous churches along the Royal Route, such as the Church of the Holy Cross, St. Anne's Church, and the Church of St. Joseph of the Visitationists. Most likely produced in the 1880s, the photographs document several views and buildings that were partially or completely destroyed during World War II, including the Kronenberg Palace, the Kierbedzia Bridge, the remains of which was later used as foundation for the Slasko-Dabrowski Bridge, the historic Hotel Europejski, later rebuilt in stages throughout the 1950s, and the Summer Theatre, built in the Saxon Garden in 1870. Konrad Brandel (1838?-1920) first opened his studio at 1249 Nowy Swiat in 1865, focusing of portrait photography before expanding into topographic photography. The company received the silver medal for photography at the Wroclaw photographic exhibition Exhibition in Moscow in 1885.

        Panoramic Photograph of Cairo

1870 - This splendid and unusually large panoramic photograph of Cairo combines elements of antiquity, the medieval period, and the modern world. In the distance the pyramids at Giza are visible, while a train races along the Nile River between Cairo and the pyramids. The photograph is dominated by the Citadel and by the Muhammad Ali mosque, which famously has two soaring minarets. Muhammad Ali, the energetic governor of Cairo, razed most palaces and buildings in the 14th-century Mamluk citadel for this grand undertaking, begun in 1830 and completed in 1857. Cairo panoramic views of this size and scope are very scarce. Albumen print on paper, comprising multiple joined panels, overall image size 7 x 74 inches. Mounted on linen. Old folds, some wear, but generally in very good condition and with good contrast. Archivally framed.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM PRESIDENT GRANT TO GEN. WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN, INVITING SHERMAN TO A RECEPTION WITH A DELEGATION OF LEADING CHIEFS OF THE SIOUX TRIBE].

Washington, D.C. June 6, 1870. - [4]pp. Mailing folds, minor edge toning. Very good. A congenial letter from President Grant to Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman, inviting Sherman and his wife to join him at the White House that evening for a reception with the "delegation of the Indians now in Washington . The Cabinet and their ladies and most of the Diplomatic Corps with their ladies are to be present also. There has been no invitation sent to any one but those coming expressed a desire to be present. Yours truly U.S. Grant." Sherman has noted on the verso of the third page, "Absent at time of its receipt." In June 1870, President Grant hosted the Sioux tribal chiefs Red Cloud, Spotted Tail, and Swift Bear in Washington, one of many such meetings between Grant and Native American leadership, but one of particular importance. The three chiefs were the leaders of several sub-divisions of the Sioux nation, and those most inclined to seek a peaceful settlement with the encroaching United States. This meeting garnered a front- page illustration in the June 18, 1870 issue of HARPER'S WEEKLY, showing Grant shaking hands as he greets the three leaders. Grant's "Indian Peace Policy" met with limited success, and though the policy certainly embodied the cultural values of the era, in hindsight seems misguided. Tribes either agreed to go on reservations (as these three Sioux leaders did), or were pressed to do so. Sherman, serving as the Commanding General of the U.S. Army from 1869 to 1883, oversaw the enforcing of this policy. He pursued this with the vigor and ruthlessness he had applied to Georgia in the Civil War, developed a rather virulent hatred of those Sioux Indians who did not go onto reservations, remarking after Custer's defeat at Little Bighorn that "hostile savages like Sitting Bull and his band of outlaw Sioux.must feel the superior power of the Government." An interesting presidential letter at a key point in United States policy towards Native Americans.

The Ladies of the White House

New York: U.S. Publishing Co.. 1870. First. First edition. Tall, thick octavo. Fifteen steel engraved portraits. Green cloth decorated and titled in gilt. A couple of small tears at the crown, evidence of label removed from spine, else a sound, very good copy. This copy Inscribed by Millard Fillmore to his wife on the first blank: "Presented to Mrs. Millard Fillmore by her Husband. March 14, 1870." Additionally Signed on the title page on the same day: "Mrs. Millard Fillmore. March 14, 1870." Fillmore was elected Vice President to Zachary Taylor, and ascended to the Presidency when Taylor died after little more than a year in office. The book provides a reasonably detailed biography and portrait of his first wife Abigail, who died a little more than a month after Fillmore left office after completing Taylor's term. This volume is inscribed to his second wife, Caroline Carmichael McIntosh, a wealthy widow, whom he married five years after his term expired (and who insisted that Fillmore sign a prenuptial agreement). This volume contains a pencil correction, likely in either her hand or her husband's, correcting Abigail's birthdate. A thick volume, usually found well-worn, and seldom with such a nice association. .

Autograph Letter Signed as Prime Minister about Women's Rights

Two pages dated 31 January, 1870 on black bordered mourning stationary addressed from 11, Carlton House Terrace. Removed from an album with slight paper remnants in the margins, very good or better. A letter from the Liberal politician who was one of the great English Prime Ministers, written in the first of his four terms, to an unidentified woman who sent him a book on women's rights. As follows:"Madame, I beg you to accept my thanks for your eloquent work on 'woman's rights' which I have read alike with interest and with sympathy. Observing that it is Privately Printed, and therefore not accessible in the usual manner, I take the great liberty of saying how much I should like to be possessed of one, or were it possible of two, other copies. They are intended for destinations which I am sure you would consider worthy. I have the honour to be Madam, Your very faithful servant, W.E. Gladstone."While we are not sure who the recipient was, we can speculate who Gladstone wanted at least one of the extra copies for. A third person letter from Queen Victoria to Gladstone on May 6, 1870 on the subject of women's rights references Gladstone sending her such a work earlier in the year: "The Queen feels so strongly upon this dangerous & unchristian & unnatural cry & movement of 'women's rights,' in which she knows Mr. Gladstone agrees (as he sent her that excellent pamphlet by a Lady)..." Gladstone agreed, sort of. Victoria and Gladstone shared some religious piety about the differences between men and women, especially while Victoria was in the throes of grief over the death of Prince Albert in 1861, and while he exhibited sympathy for the lot of women, and a lively interest in the debate, he refused to introduce the topic of women's suffrage into Parliament, despite the urging of some in his Liberal Party. .

        EL LIBRO ROJO

Mexico. 1870.. [2],153pp. plus lithograph titlepage and thirty-eight lithographed plates (at least one with hand coloring). Large folio. Brown publisher's morocco, stamped in black and gilt, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. Hinges rubbed, corners lightly rubbed. Some light scattered foxing, but generally quite clean. Very good. An elaborate 19th-century Mexican lithographic book, issued on a grand scale with large lithographs after drawings by Primitivo Miranda, depicting a pantheon of martyrs of the Mexican nation. Riva Palacio and Payno were noted intellectuals, and with this book they clearly sought to immortalize those who had sacrificed their lives for the nation, thus the title, LIBRO ROJO or Red Book, signifying the bloodshed throughout Mexican history. Interestingly, many of the plates depict horrors inflicted either by Spaniards or by the Mexican Inquisition. Depicted here are Montezuma II, Cuauhtemoc, Martin Cortez, Pedro de Alvarado, la familia Carabajal, la familia Dongo, Hidalgo, Allende, Morelos, Guerrero, Los Marires de Tacubaya, and Maximilian. The plate titled "La Peste (1577)" is partially colored and depicts a country village in Mexico affected by the plague. The lithographs are by Hernandez and Iriarte, the whole printed by Diaz de Leon y White. A rare complete copy of this unusual lithographic book, here in a beautiful binding and in very nice condition.

A Collection of Three Early Views of Canton (Guangzhou) Landmarks.

Canton, ca. 1870 - This is an excellent group of early photographs of cultural landmarks in Canton (Guangzhou), by Lai Fong, China’s foremost 19th century Chinese photographer. Guangzhou, often called the City of Five Goats based on the legend that five beings with five goats brought bunches of grain to the local people blessing them for eternity with fertility and prosperity, has always held an important role in the history of China. It was the capital of three local dynasties: the Nanyue, Southern Han, and Southern Ming. The city’s harbor was one of the starting points of the Marine Silk Road. This collection of photographs by the great 19th century Chinese photographer Lai Fong, whose work is distinct for its artfulness and high quality, offers early photographic views of three of Canton’s most revered landmarks: the Hall of 500 Louhan, the Pazhou Pagoda, and the Zhenhai Tower. Hall of 500 Louhan of Hualin Temple LAI, FONG, Canton. No. 317. Wa Lum Temple. Canton, ca. 1870. Albumen print, mounted. 8 ¼ x 10 ½. Printed letterpress caption on verso: “No. 317. – ” This is an important photograph by Lai Fong of the original Hall of 500 Louhan (Arhat) at Haulin Temple. According to legend during the 6th century Bodhidharma, a revered Buddhist monk, preached Buddhism from an alter he set up in Xiguan. In 1655, Zongfu, a Zen master, built a temple at this location that he named Hualin. The temple was divided into several halls. The most impressive hall was the Hall of 500 Louhan, which contained 500 gold painted life-sized statues of monks each with their unique characteristics. Buddhist tradition gives accounts of groups of 16, 18, or 500 luohans who were commanded by Buddha to await the coming of Maitreya, the Future Buddha. The original sculptures photographed by Lai Fong were destroyed. The Hall of 500 Louhan was rebuilt in 1997 and remains one of Guangzhou’s great cultural landmarks. Pazhou Pagoda LAI, FONG, Pazhou Pagoda No. 289. Canton, ca.1875. Albumen print, mounted. 8 ¼ x 10 ½ inches. Printed letterpress caption: “No. 289. – Pachao Pagoda, Canton. This pagoda is near to Whampoa, it is nine stories in height and has been built for a great number of years .” This is an early photograph by Lai Fong of the Pazhou Pagoda, which was referred to as the “Pillar of Pazhou” during the Qing Dynasty. The Pazhou Pagoda was built during the Ming Dynasty as a Buddhist landmark on an island on the southern bank of the Pearl River close to Guangzhou’s two other ancient pagodas, Chigang Pagoda and Flower or Hua Ta Pagoda. The Pazhou Pagoda was used as a guide for merchant ships traveling on the Marine Silk Road. Zhenhai Tower LAI, FONG, Zhenhai Tower, No. 260. Canton, ca.1875. Albumen print, mounted. 8 ¼ x 10 ½ inches. Printed letterpress caption: “No. 260. – Pagoda, Canton. This place of worship is built on the walls of the city and is Five Storey in height ” Lai Fong’s early photograph of Zhenhai Tower, or the Five-Story Pagoda, offers a unique view of the tower and the old city wall, an important Guangzhou landmark. Zhenhai Tower was built during the Ming Dynasty by Zhu Liangzu in an effort to subdue an omen. Once called the First Tower of South China, Zhenhai Tower was one of old Guangzhou’s most famous monuments. The tower’s elevated location provided a spectacular view of the city. The tower is now the Guangzhou Museum which houses over 5,000 years of relics and documents related to Guangzhou’s history. Zhenhai Tower is one of the tallest and oldest buildings in Yuexiu Park. 3 Albumen prints, mounted. 8 ¼ x 10 ½ inches. Printed letterpress captions versos.
