Aurillac is the capital of Cantal. The Siege of Paris lasted from September 19, 1870, to January 28, 1871, and the capture of Paris by Prussian forces, led to the French defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. Following the defeat of Emperor Napoleon III in September 1870, the French Second Empire collapsed, replaced, on February 17, 1871, by the French Third Republic at war with the newly formed German Reich ruled by Kaiser Wilhelm I who was proclaimed German Emperor at Versailles, in conquered France, on January 18, 1871 .         Theriaki and Their Last Dose: Letters of Fitz Hugh Ludlow and Others, to Dr. Samuel B. Collins, Relating to the Most Wonderful Medical Discovery of the Age

Chicago: np, 1870. Hardcover. 8vo. 76 pages. Original blue polished calf, titled in gilt on front cover, a gilt leafy border (some light rubbing). FIRST EDITION of this scarce work on opium addiction: we find no copies at auction or in the trade according to online databases. Within twenty years of the arrival of the first Chinese in the United States, opium smoking had begun to spread. It was reported by Dr. harry Hubbell Kane that the first American smoked opium in 1868, making this work a very early study of the drug's presence in the US. Samuel Collins opened a clinic to treat opium addicts and published this early pamphlet, and more in the coming years, on his treatment. "Theriaki" was a term used to define an "opium eater," and is found in the works of Balzac and other 19th-century writers.

Pen and Ink Sketches of the Life of a "Griffin" in India.

[c.1870] - Landscape quarto (230 × 289 mm). Contemporary red morocco-grained skiver, matching cloth, initials gilt to the front board, marbled endpapers. A little rubbed and soiled, with some light restoration on the joints, light browning throughout, some off-setting from the illustrations to the facing leaves, first two leaves with short splits to the fore-edge, repaired, overall very good. 32 caricature sketches on 14 leaves, 8 full-page, the remaining 6 leaves divided into 4 panels, all with descriptive text on the versos of the previous leaf facing. The misadventures of a newly-arrived "Griffin" or young military officer in India in the mid-nineteenth century - drunken sports in the Mess, misunderstandings of local customs, outflankings by native servants, all very good-humoured and self-deprecatory. Similar to Charles D'Oyly's Tom Raw for the earlier part of the century. Charles Talbot Davenport (1848-1919) purchased a lieutenancy in the 83rd (County of Dublin) Regiment of Foot, later the Royal Irish Rifles, in 1867, he retired in 1881 as Paymaster with the rank of Major. This lively, and highly-detailed, if slightly naïve series of cartoons chronicle the typical experiences of a young officer in India. Inscribed, over his initials, by the artist on verso of the front free endpaper; "To my Grandson O[rmus] N[eville] T[albot] Davenport, at the request of Rose Dartnell - to whom and for whom these drawings were done by Charles Talbot Davenport when he first soldiered in India". An amusing ramble through the Raj with a somewhat bumbling, but engaging guide. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Tables et Gueridon S & Cie 11. Warenkatalog mit ca. 190 photographierten Louis XV - und Louis XVI-Möbeln

Ohne Ortsangabe, ev. Paris, o. - The album measures a hugh 42cm x 37cm. 97 pages of which only 24 are blank both sides, with approximately 190 individual photographs varying in sizes pasted on to the pages some pages front and back. Illustrating approximately 330 pieces of furniture. Looking at the style of the photography, the era of the furniture and the binding style of the album, raised bands and font etc I would expect this to date between 1870 and 1900. - There was a very important manufacturer of this type of high quality Louis XV and XVI inspired 19th century furniture called Paul Sormani but his pieces were signed Sormani el Fils (and son). The quality is astounding throughout. This could be a manufacturers catalogue that was on display at one of the many furniture expositions during the mid to late Victorian Era, and the fact that this vast volume is numbered 11 would suggest that there were other volumes preceding this and succeeding. Another explanation for this could be that this is a photographic catalogue for an important collection of furniture possibly a Royal Collection or a collection relating to someone clearly of importance. We have found that the way these pieces are displayed with four digit numbers and letters is exactly how for example a royal collection of furniture I was researching was catalogued, and also some of the photographs have numbers as high as 6000 which would suggest a vast collection. On the whole this is clearly a ve [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Sulla struttura degli epiteli pavimentosi stratificati.

      - Rendiconti del Reale Istituto Lombaro, serie II, Voll. III. Fasc. XVI. - Milano 1870, 8°, 8 pp., 2 Taf., feiner Pappband. Very rare offprint! - - "Nodes of Bizzozero in the skin. Another field of interest for Bizzozero concerned the histological structure of the epidermis and, in particular, the points of contact between adjacent cells of the stratum spinosum, erroneously considered at the time to be 'intercellular bridges' that established a cytoplasmic continuity. Bizzozero's attention was captured by some peculiar shapes that he observed in these cells, such that the processes projecting from the adjacent cellular elements met end-to-end in small, dense and dark nodules, later known as 'nodes of Bizzozero'. Bizzozero perceptively concluded that there was no cytoplasmic continuity between these cells, and that the dense nodules that we now call desmosomes or 'connecting bodies' (from the Greek words desmos for 'bond' or 'ligament' and soma for 'body'), were, in fact, bipartite adhesive structures to which both cells contributed. Bizzozero's conclusion was not accepted at the time, owing to the influence of Louis Ranvier, who propounded the opposite idea of cell-to-cell continuity. The definitive resolution of this controversy came with the advent of the electron microscope, which revealed a protoplasmic discontinuity at the level of the intercellular bridges, so confirming Bizzozero's theory."       Tours-Bordeaux: [Typographie Lahure, Paris], 1870-1871. First edition. Dagron. 12mo., 24 pp. Illustrated stiff paper wrappers. Original orange wrappers are moderately soiled with the signature of a previous owner neatly written on the top margin. Occasional traces of light foxing, a very good copy with fragments of the original microfilm laid-in. Prudent René Patrice Dagron, was a prominent Parisian photographer who by 1860 was making microscopically sized photographs. During the Franco-German War of 1870, he applied his ingenuity to make microscopically reduced negatives of dispatches to be transmitted back and forth from Paris to Tours; these tiny pieces of gelatin film were rolled and inserted in quills that were attached to the wings of carrier pigeons. Most copies lack the original microfilm specimen, it is included here. Truthful Lens #42.

: Arthus Bertrand. Pages 451 Vol.2 430 pp., vol.3 455 pp., vol. 4 468 pp. Language French 8°, clean print, scarce. HERE WITH PROMINENT PROVENANCE: HOFBIBLIOTHEK WITTELSBACH. Philippe-Alexandre Le Brun de Charmettes (1785–1870) was a French historian, poet, translator and official. De Charmettes was born in Bordeaux (France). He was appointed to the French Conseil d'État in 1810 and became a préfet (prefect) in the French department of Haute-Saône in 1830. A contributor to the literary magazine l’Abeille littéraire, created by Victor Hugo in 1821, he is mainly known for his successful efforts to rescue the figure of Jeanne d'Arc from partial oblivion and turn her into a national heroine. His interest for Joan came at a time when France was still struggling to define its new identity after the Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. The national ethos was in search of non controversial heroes. A staunch prop to King and country, Joan of Arc was an acceptable symbol to the monarchists. As a patriot and the daughter of commoners, she was seen as one prototype of the low-born volunteers (the soldats de l'an II) who had victoriously fought for revolutionary France in 1802 and as such could be claimed by the Republicans. As a religious martyr, she was also popular in the powerful Catholic community. De Charmette's Orleanide, today largely forgotten, was another attempt to magnify the national ethos as writers like Virgil (the Aeneid), or Camoens (the Lusiad) had done for Rome and Portugal. Significant works Histoire de Jeanne d'Arc (Histoire de Jeanne d'arc-Tome1 Tome2 Tome3 Tome4), Paris, Ed. Artus Bertrand, 1817, 4 volumes. This copy is illustrated with portraits of literary and other celebrities of (mainly) nineteenth- century England, plus numerous views and other plates, three scarce theatre playbills and eight contemporary manuscript letters. In all, this pair of volumes is highly representative of the Victorian Age. In addition to the portrait of Douglas Jerrold issued with the book, this copy also contains 48 portraits, including John Keats, Thomas Carlyle, S. T. Coleridge, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Browning, David Garrick, Robert Burke, Samuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Ben Johnson, Harriet Martineau, Alexander Pope, Sir Francis Bacon, Robert Southey and William Makepeace Thakeray. Three rare playbills from performances at the Royal Theater, Covent Garden are bound in with the work. One of the playbills advertises the 1829 performance of Carlo Maria Von Weber's Oberon, the foot of which bears an advertisement for "An Opera, composed by Rossini" to be performed a week later, a reference to the London debut of William Tell. Also included are a announcements for a performance of Macbeth and "Roberts Moving Panorama: In Ten Compartments." The seven original autograph letters include notes by Pierce Egan, J. P. Harley, Thomas Chalmers, Lord Brougham, Sir Robert Peel, Sidney Smith and Joseph Hume. A unique and fascinating item, beautifully bound and in excellent condition.

[Washington. ca. 1870]. - Broadside, 11 3/4 x 9 inches. Old fold lines. A few minor tears and losses at edges. Very good. Advertisement for the NATIONAL CAPITOL, a weekly newspaper printed in Washington, urging people to subscribe to the paper under the headline, "Don't spend your money for naught. Remember the old ex-slave of the South." This headline deceptively draws the reader in to find out that in the event that a bill is passed for pensioning former slaves, the paper promises to print it in full. Though no record of this paper was found by us, it claims to have been "published each and every week, and has been, five long years, right at the National Capitol, where all national legislation must first see the light". The marketing in this ad would imply an African-American readership. Future contributors are listed, "Rev. Campbell, Rev. Cage, Mr. Mallory, Mr. Wills, Captain Zediker and possibly Mr. Lawson," perhaps indicating that this is a prospectus for a potential paper, rather than an ad for an existing publication, despite claims of publication longevity.

      - Bologna, Tipi Fava E Garagnani, 1870, 8°, 52 pp., feiner Halbledereinband. Extreme Rare offprint "Estratto dal Giornale la Rivist Clinica del 1870"! - - "This initial Observation was anything but trivial, because a neuron had never been seen before in its entirety." P. Mazzarello - - "It is difficult to imagine today the excitement that Golgi must have felt in observing for the first time nerve cells in their entirety and in extraordinary detail. One can guess the impact of a Golgi specimen on an observer of the 19th Century from the reaction of Cajal in 1887 when slides impregnated with the chromo argentic technique were shown to him by Luis Simarro Lacabra (Ramon y Cajal, 1989): they changed the course of his entire scientific life. Nothing of the kind had been seen before. In 1865, Deiters (his manuscript was published posthumously by his mentor Max Schultze) had reported that nerve cells had two types of processes: the "protoplasmic processes" (the term "dendrites" was introduced by W. His in 1889), so called because their cytoplasm had the same structure as that of the cell body, and the "nerve process", one per cell and light-refracting, that became the axis of a myelinated nerve fiber and was therefore named "Achsency-linder" by Rosenthal in 1839 (for all above references see Shepherd, 1991) and "cylindraxis" by English-speaking authors. The origin of the term "axon" was attributed to Kölliker by Lenhossek (Lenhossek, 1895). Non myelinated axons and their arborizations, however, had never been seen in the gray matter of the central nervous System and the protoplasmic processes soon lost their individuality as they merged into the structure less substance that seemed to fill the spaces between the neuronal cell bodies. - - Yet, anybody who has tried the Golgi method is aware of the difficulty in obtaining a well-impregnated section of nervous tissue. Most likely, Golgi's discovery began as an accidental Observation, possibly during his studies of the perivascular connective tissue of the brain or Virchow-Robin's spaces (1869-1870; Golgi, 1870 *), after immersing in silver nitrate a specimen stored in potassium dichromate (Müller's fluid) to stain the intercellular boundaries between endothelial cells (see Mazzarello, 2010). This initial Observation was anything but trivial, because a neuron had never been seen before in its entirety, and was probably followed by endless modifications of the technique, which is notoriously fickle. Furthermore, the very notion that only a few neurons were stained was counterintuitive, for the dyestuffs known at the time, such as carmine, would stain all cell nuclei. Golgi must have been concemed by the scarce reproducibility of the "black reaction" and, during his initial trials, must have developed the preoccupation with technical artifacts that tormented him throughout his life, became an Obsession with his pupils and a trait of the entire biomedical establishment of the University of Pavia during the first half of the past Century."
