Rochester, N.Y.: J.W. Thompson & Company, 1870. Contemporary calf, name of nursery stamped in gilt on cover, rebacked. Very good. A fine "tree-peddler's" sample book with a large range of images of various varieties of fruit, flowering plants, and trees available. Salesman's sample book for the I.S. Covell nursery in Rose, New York, containing 111 separate plates illustrating a wide variety of fruits and plants, such as apples, pears, cherries, and roses. The cover is stamped in gilt: "I.S. Covell. Rose, N.Y. No. 16." The plates are almost entirely printed with pochoir and stenciling, in a style typical of the early work of the Thompson firm, which was active from 1876 to 1891. Sample books such as this were used to market fruit trees and shrubs, displaying the handsome fruits in vibrant colors. They were typically made up uniquely for each nursery by the Thompson firm. A lovely example of the burgeoning nursery industry in Rochester and the accompanying color plate industry it created.         Victorian Middle East Photograph Album Assembled by J. Menderson

[NP]: NP, [ca. 1870-90]. Hardcover. Very good. Oblong quarto album if full leather with name stamped in gilt on front board, newly rebacked. Thirty 10" by 8" images plus four 5" by 4" images, each protected by a tissue guard. Small nicks to the edges of the first image [Bay of Algiers] , else contents in fine condition. Menderson remains anonymous, but was most likely an American of financial means and leisure. Of the identified photographers work, four are those of Luigi Fiorillo's studio and three are of Bonfil's. A nice grouping of images detailing people and places beginning with Algeria, progressing to Egypt, and finally ending at the Wailing Wall in Palestine; of particularly interest is the portrait of the reclining 'Zora', attributed to Jean Geiser. Though fully clothed, reclined with cigarette in hand, the image would no doubt nibble at the prurient interest of the Victorian traveler.

Hand-addressed mailing envelope during the Indian War

Fort Harker, KS, 1870. unbound. 3 x 5.25 inches, addressed by Custer to his wife, "Mrs. General Custer, Fort Riley, Kansas," bearing an affixed three-cent postage stamp, postmarked Fort Harker, Kansas, April 28th (1870). *The Kansas Historical Society reports that between May 3 - 15, 1870, General Custer and the remaining troops of the 7th Cavalry passed through Fort Harker on their way from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Hays, to engage the American Indians further west. Though they cannot pinpoint the exact dates it is possible that Custer arrived as early as the 28th of April (when this letter is postmarked) or had an advance party drop off this letter to be posted to his wife before his arrival. Whatever the circumstances, this was Custer's only documented appearance at Fort Harker (1870) and he left with the objective of pursuing the Indians in combat. Very good condition.         Album - "Flotte De Nos jours" - Beautifully Mounted Naval Lithographs

France, 1870. France, circa 1870. A lovely album presentation of nineteenth century ships of the French Navy Fleet illustrated in lithograph, with a frontis scene and a French title page with gilt lettering. Oblong 8vo. contains 15 nautical lithographs compiled and neatly mounted on cardstock leafs by an unknown naval enthusiast who frames each image with manuscript lines. In an elegant early twentieth century binding, gilt tooled navy boards with four raised bands to spine, titled to front and spine, with a lovely nautical motif of gilt ships and anchors. Volume measures approximately 20 x 25 x cm. Very good condition, a pleasing nautical volume. Title: "Flotte de nos Jours" [Our Fleet Today] This work represents the revival of the French Navy after suffering greatly during the Revolution. With tireless effort and generous investment, during the nineteenth century, the French Navy not only recovered, but became the second finest in the world after the Royal Navy. Each flying the colours of France, mid-nineteenth century sailing vessels herein illustrated at sea include a frigate that may very well be the Napoléon (1850-1876), some ironclad battleships such as Gloire (1859) and Solférino (1859), examples of the Algésiras class steam ships of the line such as Redoutable (1857) and Borda (1864). We also find a singular example of an ocean-worthy was a three-masted wooden-hulled steam and sail and paddle frigate similar to Descartes. The Napoléon was a 90-gun ship of the line of the French Navy, and the first purpose-built steam battleship in the world. She is also considered the first true steam battleship, and the first screw battleship in history. . Very Good.

[Ellis, F.S.- Autograph Letter to Alice Boyd] Fascinating Letter About Proposed Book by Christina Rossetti, the Manuscript of Which has never been Found.

Three pages. An important letter by the famed publisher F. S. Ellis to Alice Boyd, lover and companion of William Bell Scott and resident at Penkill Castle, in Ayrshire, Scotland. "33 King St., Covent Garden, June 2, 1870. Dear Miss Boyd, There have been so many unfathomable opinions on the Graphotype process lately and the cuts seem to work so unsatisfactorily under it that I feel quite doubtful whether I ought to go on with it, at any rate I must ask you not make any more designs for the present for if this process will not do I fear the book will have to be abandoned as the expense of cutting woodblocks would be too great I am afraid, for so small a book... " He continues, "... If you would let me know how much I am indebted to you so far I should be very much obliged..." He further elaborates in supplying ample evidence of his willingness to remunerate Boyd for her losses, "Whatever be the ultimate determination about the book, it will be quite my own fault for I feel that it was quite at my desire you have persevered with this Graphotype process against your own wishes. Believe me, Yours Faithfully, F. S. Ellis." A fascinating letter maligning a controversial printing process and the proposed book using its process, which remains somewhat clouded in mystery to this day. From the book, "Christina Rossetti and Illustration: A Publishing History," by Lorraine Janzen Koistra: "Alice Boyd's 'Day Diaries' note the reception of a letter from F. S. Ellis on 4 June, 1870, remarking, 'He is for giving up CGR's book...' (Penkill Papers box 7). Further, "A Catalogue of Books, Manuscripts at Penkill Castle, Ayrshire," lists a collection of manuscript poems for "Sing-Song," by CGR, as well as 85 pen and pencil drawings, 9 proofs, etc., which has never been found. Finally, a letter by Alice Boyd dated 15 June, 1870 to Ellis states she {i.e. Boyd] had prepared 66 designs for the book as adjunctive material, when production was halted. An amazing survival and full of historical import.

These books were printed and published secretly, issued in small numbers and either sold or distributed discreetly. * "Shun-pon" or erotic books were used as gifts to couples on their wedding night, commonly called "Pillow Books" or "Makura Zoshiki." A euphuism for licentious books enjoyed across all spectrum of Japanese society, commonly bought, sold or traded on the "black" market. Because they were officially "banned" by the Shogunate, artists, wood block carvers and printers risked severe punishment if caught, these books were driven "underground" but nevertheless thrived during the Edo and Meiji periods, right down to the Taisho and Showa times. * The preface was written by Jin Taku San-jin, and is undated. The author's and writers of the text were often famous artists or poets who assumed "studio" names of a political nature to openly challenge and taunt the Shogunate. * This example consists of twelve double-page color illustrations 22 x 15.5 cm. and five single page color erotic images which are ca. 9.5 x 13 cm. The subjects are: Title page illustration number: ** Double-page illustrations: 1. Couple under the Futon engaged in love-making. 2. Couple love-making partially unclothed. 3. Couple about to make love, the man licks his fingers to -wet the vulva, she spread her legs exposing her genitals -in readiness. 4. Couple making love he is nearly nude. 5. Couple after making love, she is before the mirror -grooming herself, nude from the hips up, exposing her -vulva. 6. Couple fully engaged in making love on a mat, with lots -of Chirishi" [a kind of toilet paper] spread about, as -evidence of ample love juices. 7. Couple making love, she is on top in an unusual position. 8. Couple making love from the rear. 9. Couple making love while she rests on the Goh board. 10. Couple making love he mounts her from the top. 11. Couple engaged in love making, he inserts his penis, she -clings to him. 12. Newlyweds engaged in love-making, she wears the typical -bride's veil. ** Begin single-page smaller illustrations: 12. Typical Meiji period man with moustache masturbating his -lover, his huge penis at the ready as she caresses it. 13. Older couple making love from the rear. 14. Couple enjoying the pleasures of fondling her vulva, his -huge penis at the ready. 15. A sleeping woman nearly nude under the mosquito net is -being visited by her lover. 16. A couple prepared to engage in love-making, both are -red-faced and ready to start, with their genitals -exposed. 17. RARE print of a foreigner engaged in making love with a -Japanese woman, the surrounding text states: "Anata wo -suki...saa watashi mo iki soo...." [I love you, I am -ready to have orgasm." The foreigner's words are stated -in Japanese: " Watakushi mo oikimasu" meaning "I am -also ready to have orgasm." * WHY IS THIS EROTIC ALBUM DIFFERENT FROM MOST OTHERS ? What makes this album exceptionally unusual and RARE is the Romanized and Katana characters used for the "Seiyo jin" or Westerner's words. That is to say, either the foreigner could speak Japanese, or the author elected to simply use Japanese to indicate the foreigner's willingness to enjoy the pleasures of a Japanese woman and learned enough Japanese to indicate his eagerness to concert with a Japanese woman. In any case being written in Katakana also indicates these are foreign words, or at least Japanese words spoken by a foreigner which accents the whole print. All Japanese could understand the dialogue, and surely some foreigners could learn the words and sentence essential to a successful night out on the town with Japanese prostitutes in the Yoshiwara. The foreigner's Japanese is expressed in quite a polite form, indicating at least he has learned proper Japanese during his sojourn in Japan. * This is one of the rarest of all erotic prints of the Meiji period, actually showing a Westerner engaging in sexual pleasures with a Japanese woman. The woman wears a typical high-neck Victorian dress, and still has on one sock. Her coiffeur is Japanese and she has simply pulled up her dress, revealing a red undergarment, suggestive of an "erotic nature." The illustration is replete with foreign curtains and they both lay on a foreign soft. Clearly the message was that some houses of prostitution were well outfitted with Western settings to give an extra level of "comfort" to foreigners. Few if many exist showing foreigners in the Yoshiwara with Japanese women. * The work is a typical "pillow book" but with the addition of five other erotic prints, including the exceptionally RARE print of a foreigner. While the occurrence of foreigners and Japanese women making love were common-place in the mid-late 19th century Japan, woodblock color prints illustrating and documenting this pleasure are clearly obscure and scarce, few if any exist. * "Chirishi" was a kind of hand-made Washi paper tissue commonly used in the toilet. It's presence in the bedroom as depicted in erotic prints indicate a profusion of love-making when thrown about the bedroom indicated evidence of love juices. Its presence is both symbolic and practical. * Each erotic print commonly had a dialogue of the exchanges between the man and woman, erotic words and sentences to encourage or compliment the other, filled the backgrounds of most prints. This album contains a large number of these dialogues and are quite readable if not memorable, telling him "what a large penis" he has, while he tells her what a "strong vagina she has" &c... * The Japanese were extremely "natural" and open about love-making, there was little stigma as found in Western countries during the same period. Therefore the genre of erotic books were less carnal and more concerned with the natural aspect of love-making in an openly erotic manner. Their healthy if not erotic aptitudes were the norm and acceptable throughout all of Japanese society until the end of World War II, when prostitution was still acceptable, but continued under the guise of not being officially sanctioned. * CONDITION: The work is remarkably clean internally, with some minor repair to the hinges, covers are mildly sunned. * The size of the album is important. That is to say, it was small, discreet and of the size that could be easily kept in the Kimono sleeve and carried to a waiting lover's room. * Color scans can be sent by email.         Photo Album]: Family Album of Thomas J. Kinney, New Jersey Newspaperman and Politician

1870 - Folio. Contemporary three quarter leather album of the period. The leather is powdery and dusty thus very good, the images are near fine. 34 large (most are approximately 8" x 9") mounted albumen prints. Kinney was a successful New Jersey newspaperman and politician. He owned and ran the *Newark Daily Advertiser* for most of his life. He was a graduate of Princeton, a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, founding member and president of the American branch of the S.P.C.A., and a delegate at the Republican Convention that nominated Lincoln for President in 1860. He studied law in the office of Joseph Bradley, the founder of Asbury Park and Ocean Grove, apparently but never practiced. This album shows his family; wife (Estelle Condit), children, beach scenes, as well as three images of African-Americans (presumably domestic help). Several of the images are likely to have been taken in Asbury Park or neighboring Deal. An interesting album of earlier than usual vintage. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Virginia City & Helena [likely Augusta, Me.; Chicago; & Davenport, Ia.], 1870. Uniform 20th-century buckram, gilt leather labels. Small chips to labels. Minor dust soiling. Ink library stamps on each titlepage, minor paper abrasions to a few titlepages, some leaves with embossed blindstamp. A good set. A rare consecutive set of early Montana territorial laws for 1864-70. The set comprises the session laws for the first six sessions of the legislative assembly of Montana Territory. The first volume contains ACTS, RESOLUTIONS AND MEMORIALS, OF THE TERRITORY OF MONTANA, PASSED BY THE FIRST LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY, composed of the "Organic Act of the Territory of Montana," establishing a temporary government for the territory, followed by the statutes. This first work represents the basic legal code of the state. It is bound with the session laws for the third legislature. The remaining four volumes comprise the session laws for the second, fourth, fifth, and sixth legislative assemblies. The controversy over the printing locations of these early Montana laws continues today. There is strong evidence to suggest the territorial press in Montana was not set up to handle works of the magnitude of these session laws, and thus the work was parceled out to various printers in Augusta, Maine, Chicago, and Davenport, Iowa. Esteemed bibliographer Douglas McMurtrie believed as far back as 1937 that the first session laws were printed elsewhere, as he did not include the work in his bibliography of Montana imprints. He did include all of the other imprints herein, and credited their creation to territorial presses. However, subsequent research by Robert Armstrong has revealed that it is likely that at least two of the other works were printed elsewhere: one in Chicago and one in Davenport. In fact, Armstrong does not claim definitively that any of the books here were actually printed in Montana. Whether or not these works are the product of a territorial press, their rarity cannot be questioned. We have never had the opportunity to offer such an early consecutive run of Montana territorial laws, as they are exceedingly scarce in the market. McMURTRIE (MONTANA) 18, 20, 39, 51, 53. Robert D.
