        Santa Claus and his Works

New York: McLoughlin Brothers, 1870. Printed Wrapper. Very Good. Nast, Thomas. 4to. 22 pages including cover and 6 full page color illustrations (printed on one side only). Original sewn binding with old, neatly-done cloth-tape reinforcement. Clean and bright full-page illustrations; some light toning to text pages. Light foxing inside front and rear cover. Cover has some minor soiling and wear including short closed marginal tears. This first book publication of Nast's famous Santa illustrations--which originally appeared in b/w in Harpers in 1866--couples them with Webster's poem. Together, they are the illustrations and poem that defined Santa as we know him today. Nast's illustrations show Santa as a toymaker, identify his home as the North Pole, show his suit as red with white trim, have him watching children's behavior (using a large telescope), picture Santa's book with names of good and bad children, etc.

I. Bloch in Neubruger/Pagel III, S.437ff.

An album of watercolours of military scenes and soldiers in uniform.

[Germany or Austria, c. 1870]. - Folio. 85 large watercolours (200 to 255 mm x 280 to 360 mm). Mounted on laid paper sheets; each watercolour captioned in German and numbered (not in sequence) at foot. Early twentieth century half calf over green roan, spine in compartments, gilt lettering. An extraordinary collection of original watercolours, apparently unpublished, celebrating the creation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire through the military episodes that led to it and the uniforms of the various nations and regiments involved. - The events depicted span from the 1750s to the 1850s, and include scenes from the Battle of Wagram, the skirmish at Spinnerin am Kreuz near Vienna, and the rebellion in Transylvania (Siebenbürgen). Officers in uniform from every corner of the Empire are shown: Prussians, Hungarians, Austrians, Poles, Czechs, Croats, Dalmatians, and Bosnians, with a few examples of local militias and foreign army regiments such as French, Turkish, Russians and British ('Scottish Grenadiers at Waterloo'). While the uniforms are described in great detail, with vivid and bright colouring, the overall style is naïve, with facial expressions and poses sometimes caricatural and grotesque, reminiscent of the celebrated prints by the French Imagerie d'Épinal. The numbers at the foot of each image, which in some instances exceed number 500, suggest that the present selection was assembled from a larger collection, probably prepared for a publication that was never realised. - Occasional short marginal tears, stains and other minor blemishes to watercolours, but generally in excellent condition; binding rubbed. Provenance: the Von Lindeman-Just family, Dresden (bookplate on front free endpaper and lettering on spine); gift from the Baroness Von Lindeman-Just to a relative in Italy (inscription dated 1962 on front free endpaper).         HISTORY OF THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE, With Notes and a Memoir by F.A. Guizot

London Virtue and Co., Limited [nd, circa 1870’s] - 2 volumes. A finely presented 19th century illustrated edition with beautiful engravings. With a great profusion of full page finely engraved plates, including 3 maps (2 folding) and 1 folding view of Rome. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original pebbled forest green cloth, upper covers and spines gilt lettered and pictorially decorated with Roman motifs. xii, 640; x, 666 pp. A very bright set, fresh and clean . A VERY HANDSOMELY ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATED SET OF THE GREATEST HISTORICAL WORK EVER UNDERTAKEN. It was in Italy while "musing amid the ruins of the Capital" that Gibbon formed the plan of his history. Originally published in six volumes from 1776 to 1788, Gibbon's fine scholarship has remained for the most part unchallenged. The work's numerous reprintings throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are evidence of its popularity and historical accuracy. "For twenty-two years Gibbon was a prodigy of steady and arduous application. His investigations extended over almost the whole range of intellectual activity for nearly fifteen-hundred years. And so thorough were his methods that the laborious investigations of German scholarship, the keen criticisms of theological zeal, and the steady researches of (two) centuries have brought to light very few important errors in the results of his labors. But it is not merely the learning of his work, learned as it is, that gives it character as a history. It is also that ingenious skill by which the vast erudition, the boundless range, the infinite variety, and the gorgeous magnificence of the details are all wrought together in a symmetrical whole. It is still entitled to be esteemed as the greatest historical work ever written" (Adams, Manual of Historical Literature, pp. 146-147). The success of the work was immediate. "I am at a loss," Gibbon wrote, "how to describe the success of the work without betraying the vanity of the writer. The first impression was exhausted in a few days; a second and third edition were scarcely adequate to the demand, and the bookseller's property was twice invaded by the pyrates of Dublin. My book was on every table, and almost on every toilette." Publication of this grand work placed Gibbon at the "very head of the literary tribe" in Europe, according to Adam Smith. This set is marvelous in the original cloth, with the gilt still brilliant. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Darby: Pr. by the author, [1872]. 8vo. 54, [14 (adv.)], 22 (adv.) pp.; 4 plts. Attractively bound collection of the first editions of these four humorous works written in thick Derbyshire dialect (the first sentence here reads "Frend, ah gey thee my hond, ah dunna mene tow fingers, bur a gud grip, az tha'll feel tinglin e aw thy veins"). => Three of the pieces include glossaries of some of the more opaque terms. Two of the essays recount visits to the extensive and interesting => Midland Counties Fine Arts and Industrial Exhibition of 1870, and the final entry features a lengthy appendix offering a more serious look at => Matlock-Bank, its hydropathic establishments, and its other landmarks, this in standard English. Mr. Smedley's Hydropathic Establishment, referenced in the text, is the first business appearing in the subsequent advertisement section, which is extensive, evocative, and contains => many ads embellished with little recommendations (by "Twitcher"?) in Darbyshire doggerel. The author, who spent most of his life in Derby, was a sculptor as well as a Derbyshire historian, and he appears to have supplied the => original illustrations here himself. The two pairs of plates (one lithographed, one steel-engraved) are done in notably different styles -- we suspect that two different engravers worked from Robinson's sketches. Robinson wrote one additional Twitcher piece in 1881, describing a visit to the Royal Agricultural Show, not included in this gathering. All the Twitcher books are now scarce: WorldCat finds very few U.K. holdings of these titles and virtually no U.S. Provenance: First text page with early pencilled ownership inscription of Mr. H. Mills in upper outer corner.

        1870 Wisden Original Wrappers

On offer here is a very rare 1870 Wisden still in it's original wrappers and in very good overall condition. As can be seen from the photographs, the front and rear wrappers are a little marked - mainly foxing. A facsimile spine has been added to the book in recent times. That repair was not carried out by me, but I suspect that at one time the book was rebound in hard boards and at some stage the book has been taken out of the boards and a facsimile spine attached. Internally, the title page and the first few pages have some foxing as do the last couple of pages but otherwise the contents are in excellent, clean, unmarked condition - most unusual for a book of this vintage. Overall, a really nice example.

[Circa 1870-1880]. An extensive series of 113 stunning photographs of Egypt, most measuring 20,4x26,4 cm. (some slightly smaller - 20x25cm - some slightly larger - 26,5x21cm), all mounted on leaves measuring 30x42 cm. and bound in three exquisite near contemporary (ab. 1900) oblong black half morocco bindings with four raised bands, gilt spines, boards with elaborately gilt corners, gilt border and to the middle of front boards a gilt vignette, gilt title ("Egypten" i.e. either Norwegian or Danish for Egypt) and gilt volume-number. Housed in three equally elegant half morocco boxes with with gilt spines, marbled edges, and with middle of boards corresponding to those of the bindings. The boxes are also from ab. 1900. The boxes have a few traces of wear, but all in all, the set is in splendid condition. Many of the photographs have numberings and name of photographer in the negative, and several of them also mention the motiv. Many of the photographs are very interesting and show groups of people, for which especially Henri Bechard is famous - some are closer to portraits, while some portray daily life and the natives of Egypt. The views of the cities, sights, antiquities, streets, etc. are also stunning and many of them depict something that is not found in usual tourist-photographs. Volume I contains 48 photograps, 14 of which are signed Sebah, 16 Bechard, and 18 are unsigned. These 48 photographs are generally speaking from the city, showing daily life and the city (in this case presumably Cairo throughout) as such; 28 of them have people in them (many of them having an almost social realist feel to them), while 20 do not (many of them having an almost striking emptyness to them).Volume II contains 21 photographs, 12 of which are signed Sebah, 5 Bechard, and 4 are unsigned. These 21 photographs are thematically quite different from those of vol. I. They are from outside the city, showing mostly pyramids, temples, funeral chambers, and the hieroglyphic inscriptions/tables. They portray a vast landscape and only 5 of them have people in them - all clearly being workers.Volume II contains 43 photographs, 28 of which are signed H. Bechard, 9 Sebah, and 5 are unsigned. These 43 photographs are again quite different in theme from those of the two previous volumes. Here we have views of cities that are not Cairo, e.g. Karnak, Louqsor, Bal el Molouk, Thebes, Edfou, Assouan, etc., along with ruins and sights from those places. At a first glance, these photos seem more tourist-like than the others, but having a closer look reveals quite the opposite. 15 of them have people in them, but they are much less visible than in the other much more socially realistic photographs, and rather form the background to the imposing ruins. They seem more staged and yet more imposing. There is something that makes it difficult to take your eye from them, like the one from the desert, whwre you see a caravan of camels in the background and a dead, rotting camel in the foreground.. A stunning collection of photographs from Egypt, by the most famous photographers of the era, Hénri Béchard (and possibly also Émile Béchard), Pascal Sébah, and possibly others who worked with the two. The collection is unusal in its scope and in the presumably contemporary thematic division of the photographs into the three volumes, which provide us with a great pan-Egyptian cycle that gives us not only the relevant sights, views, antiquties etc., but also an acute portrayal of Egypt as a country and everyday life at the time. Both Sébah and Béchard did tourist photographs, which were beginning to become extremely popular towards the end of the 19th century. But they also both possessed an artistic view that often went beyond mere touristic depictions. They both liked to stage their subject matters, like one would do for a grand painting, and often the result would be very interesting, giving us today an idea about life in Egypt that we would not otherwise have. "Among the most sensitive and well-composed of the photographs taken in the Middle East are those of Béchard. Much of the Béchard work is characterised by figures carefully arranged in a painterly fashion and thoughtfully composed landscapes and architectural studies."A large number of such magnificent artistically and historically important photographs together with more down-to-earth, but stunning and realistic photographs of the actual cities, sights, and antiquities of Egypt make up the extremely well-rounded and exhaustive collection

Theriaki and Their Last Dose: Letters of Fitz Hugh Ludlow and Others, to Dr. Samuel B. Collins, Relating to the Most Wonderful Medical Discovery of the Age

Chicago: np, 1870. Hardcover. 8vo. 76 pages. Original blue polished calf, titled in gilt on front cover, a gilt leafy border (some light rubbing). FIRST EDITION of this scarce work on opium addiction: we find no copies at auction or in the trade according to online databases. Within twenty years of the arrival of the first Chinese in the United States, opium smoking had begun to spread. It was reported by Dr. harry Hubbell Kane that the first American smoked opium in 1868, making this work a very early study of the drug's presence in the US. Samuel Collins opened a clinic to treat opium addicts and published this early pamphlet, and more in the coming years, on his treatment. "Theriaki" was a term used to define an "opium eater," and is found in the works of Balzac and other 19th-century writers.

Pen and Ink Sketches of the Life of a "Griffin" in India.

[c.1870] - Landscape quarto (230 × 289 mm). Contemporary red morocco-grained skiver, matching cloth, initials gilt to the front board, marbled endpapers. A little rubbed and soiled, with some light restoration on the joints, light browning throughout, some off-setting from the illustrations to the facing leaves, first two leaves with short splits to the fore-edge, repaired, overall very good. 32 caricature sketches on 14 leaves, 8 full-page, the remaining 6 leaves divided into 4 panels, all with descriptive text on the versos of the previous leaf facing. The misadventures of a newly-arrived "Griffin" or young military officer in India in the mid-nineteenth century - drunken sports in the Mess, misunderstandings of local customs, outflankings by native servants, all very good-humoured and self-deprecatory. Similar to Charles D'Oyly's Tom Raw for the earlier part of the century. Charles Talbot Davenport (1848-1919) purchased a lieutenancy in the 83rd (County of Dublin) Regiment of Foot, later the Royal Irish Rifles, in 1867, he retired in 1881 as Paymaster with the rank of Major. This lively, and highly-detailed, if slightly naïve series of cartoons chronicle the typical experiences of a young officer in India. Inscribed, over his initials, by the artist on verso of the front free endpaper; "To my Grandson O[rmus] N[eville] T[albot] Davenport, at the request of Rose Dartnell - to whom and for whom these drawings were done by Charles Talbot Davenport when he first soldiered in India". An amusing ramble through the Raj with a somewhat bumbling, but engaging guide. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
