        Histoire de Jeanne d `Arc., B.d.Charmettes, IV vols, 1817

Brun de Charmettes, 1785-1870 - Histoire de Jeanne d `Arc., B.d.Charmettes, IV vols, 1817 Histoire de Jeanne d'Arc, : surnommée la Pucelle d'Orleans, by Le Brun de Charmettes, Philippe Alexandre, b. 1785 Published 1817 Topics Joan, of Arc, Saint, 1412-1431 Volume 1 Publisher Paris. : Arthus Bertrand. Pages 451 Vol.2 430 pp., vol.3 455 pp., vol. 4 468 pp. Language French 8°, clean print, scarce. HERE WITH PROMINENT PROVENANCE: HOFBIBLIOTHEK WITTELSBACH. Philippe-Alexandre Le Brun de Charmettes (1785–1870) was a French historian, poet, translator and official. De Charmettes was born in Bordeaux (France). He was appointed to the French Conseil d'État in 1810 and became a préfet (prefect) in the French department of Haute-Saône in 1830. A contributor to the literary magazine l’Abeille littéraire, created by Victor Hugo in 1821, he is mainly known for his successful efforts to rescue the figure of Jeanne d'Arc from partial oblivion and turn her into a national heroine. His interest for Joan came at a time when France was still struggling to define its new identity after the Revolution and the Napoleonic wars. The national ethos was in search of non controversial heroes. A staunch prop to King and country, Joan of Arc was an acceptable symbol to the monarchists. As a patriot and the daughter of commoners, she was seen as one prototype of the low-born volunteers (the soldats de l'an II) who had victoriously fought for revolutionary France in 1802 and as such could be claimed by the Republicans. As a religious martyr, she was also popular in the powerful Catholic community. De Charmette's Orleanide, today largely forgotten, was another attempt to magnify the national ethos as writers like Virgil (the Aeneid), or Camoens (the Lusiad) had done for Rome and Portugal. Significant works Histoire de Jeanne d'Arc (Histoire de Jeanne d'arc-Tome1 Tome2 Tome3 Tome4), Paris, Ed. Artus Bertrand, 1817, 4 volumes. (The story of Joan of Arc, known as the Maid of Orleans, based on her own statements, 144 depositions from eye-witnesses, and manuscripts in the Royal Library in the Tower of London.) L'Orléanide, Poème national en vingt-huit chants (The Orleanid, a national epic in 28 cantos), Paris, Ed. Artus Bertrand, 1821. Epitres politiques sur nos Extravagances , Paris, Ed. P. Dentu, 1831. 1804:Translation in French – Le Château de Néville (Novel) 1814:Translation in French – O'Donnel – MORGAN, Lady (Novel) 1817:Translation in French – La France (Re-edition augmentee) – MORGAN, Lady (Novel) from Wikipedia [Attributes: Hard Cover]

This copy is illustrated with portraits of literary and other celebrities of (mainly) nineteenth- century England, plus numerous views and other plates, three scarce theatre playbills and eight contemporary manuscript letters. In all, this pair of volumes is highly representative of the Victorian Age. In addition to the portrait of Douglas Jerrold issued with the book, this copy also contains 48 portraits, including John Keats, Thomas Carlyle, S. T. Coleridge, Sir Walter Scott, Robert Browning, David Garrick, Robert Burke, Samuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Ben Johnson, Harriet Martineau, Alexander Pope, Sir Francis Bacon, Robert Southey and William Makepeace Thakeray. It is further augmented with 41 views, including J. W. Turner's view of Rhodes engraved by William Finden, and 4 additional plates. Three rare playbills from performances at the Royal Theater, Covent Garden are bound in with the work. One of the playbills advertises the 1829 performance of Carlo Maria Von Weber's Oberon, the foot of which bears an advertisement for "An Opera, composed by Rossini" to be performed a week later, a reference to the London debut of William Tell. Also included are a announcements for a performance of Macbeth and "Roberts Moving Panorama: In Ten Compartments." The seven original autograph letters include notes by Pierce Egan, J. P. Harley, Thomas Chalmers, Lord Brougham, Sir Robert Peel, Sidney Smith and Joseph Hume. A unique and fascinating item, beautifully bound and in excellent condition.

[Washington, D.C., 1870. Old fold lines. A few minor tears and losses at edges. Very good. Advertisement for the NATIONAL CAPITOL, a weekly newspaper printed in Washington, urging people to subscribe to the paper under the headline, "Don't spend your money for naught. Remember the old ex-slave of the South." This headline deceptively draws the reader in to find out that in the event a bill is passed for pensioning former slaves, the paper promises to print it in full. Though we could find no record of this newspaper, it claims to have been "published each and every week, and has been, five long years, right at the National Capitol, where all national legislation must first see the light." The marketing in this advertisement would imply an African-American readership. Future contributors are listed ("Rev. Campbell, Rev. Cage, Mr. Mallory, Mr. Wills, Captain Zediker and possibly Mr. Lawson"), perhaps indicating that this is a prospectus for a potential paper, rather than an advertisement for an existing publication, despite claims of publication longevity.

Sulle alterazioni dei vasi del cervello. Studi del Dott. Camillo Golgi. Memoria onorato del prremio Grassi pel 1869 (Del Laboratorio di Patologia Sperimentale).

      - Bologna, Tipi Fava E Garagnani, 1870, 8°, 52 pp., feiner Halbledereinband. Extreme Rare offprint "Estratto dal Giornale la Rivist Clinica del 1870"! - - "This initial Observation was anything but trivial, because a neuron had never been seen before in its entirety." P. Mazzarello - - "It is difficult to imagine today the excitement that Golgi must have felt in observing for the first time nerve cells in their entirety and in extraordinary detail. One can guess the impact of a Golgi specimen on an observer of the 19th Century from the reaction of Cajal in 1887 when slides impregnated with the chromo argentic technique were shown to him by Luis Simarro Lacabra (Ramon y Cajal, 1989): they changed the course of his entire scientific life. Nothing of the kind had been seen before. In 1865, Deiters (his manuscript was published posthumously by his mentor Max Schultze) had reported that nerve cells had two types of processes: the "protoplasmic processes" (the term "dendrites" was introduced by W. His in 1889), so called because their cytoplasm had the same structure as that of the cell body, and the "nerve process", one per cell and light-refracting, that became the axis of a myelinated nerve fiber and was therefore named "Achsency-linder" by Rosenthal in 1839 (for all above references see Shepherd, 1991) and "cylindraxis" by English-speaking authors. The origin of the term "axon" was attributed to Kölliker by Lenhossek (Lenhossek, 1895). Non myelinated axons and their arborizations, however, had never been seen in the gray matter of the central nervous System and the protoplasmic processes soon lost their individuality as they merged into the structure less substance that seemed to fill the spaces between the neuronal cell bodies. - - Yet, anybody who has tried the Golgi method is aware of the difficulty in obtaining a well-impregnated section of nervous tissue. Most likely, Golgi's discovery began as an accidental Observation, possibly during his studies of the perivascular connective tissue of the brain or Virchow-Robin's spaces (1869-1870; Golgi, 1870 *), after immersing in silver nitrate a specimen stored in potassium dichromate (Müller's fluid) to stain the intercellular boundaries between endothelial cells (see Mazzarello, 2010). This initial Observation was anything but trivial, because a neuron had never been seen before in its entirety, and was probably followed by endless modifications of the technique, which is notoriously fickle. Furthermore, the very notion that only a few neurons were stained was counterintuitive, for the dyestuffs known at the time, such as carmine, would stain all cell nuclei. Golgi must have been concemed by the scarce reproducibility of the "black reaction" and, during his initial trials, must have developed the preoccupation with technical artifacts that tormented him throughout his life, became an Obsession with his pupils and a trait of the entire biomedical establishment of the University of Pavia during the first half of the past Century." Thompson & Company, 1870. Contemporary calf, name of nursery stamped in gilt on cover, rebacked. Very good. A fine "tree-peddler's" sample book with a large range of images of various varieties of fruit, flowering plants, and trees available. Salesman's sample book for the I.S. Covell nursery in Rose, New York, containing 111 separate plates illustrating a wide variety of fruits and plants, such as apples, pears, cherries, and roses. The cover is stamped in gilt: "I.S. Covell. Rose, N.Y. No. 16." The plates are almost entirely printed with pochoir and stenciling, in a style typical of the early work of the Thompson firm, which was active from 1876 to 1891. Sample books such as this were used to market fruit trees and shrubs, displaying the handsome fruits in vibrant colors. They were typically made up uniquely for each nursery by the Thompson firm. A lovely example of the burgeoning nursery industry in Rochester and the accompanying color plate industry it created.         Victorian Middle East Photograph Album Assembled by J. Menderson

[NP]: NP, [ca. 1870-90]. Hardcover. Very good. Oblong quarto album if full leather with name stamped in gilt on front board, newly rebacked. Thirty 10" by 8" images plus four 5" by 4" images, each protected by a tissue guard. Small nicks to the edges of the first image [Bay of Algiers] , else contents in fine condition. Menderson remains anonymous, but was most likely an American of financial means and leisure. Of the identified photographers work, four are those of Luigi Fiorillo's studio and three are of Bonfil's. A nice grouping of images detailing people and places beginning with Algeria, progressing to Egypt, and finally ending at the Wailing Wall in Palestine; of particularly interest is the portrait of the reclining 'Zora', attributed to Jean Geiser. Though fully clothed, reclined with cigarette in hand, the image would no doubt nibble at the prurient interest of the Victorian traveler.

Hand-addressed mailing envelope during the Indian War

Fort Harker, KS, 1870. unbound. 3 x 5.25 inches, addressed by Custer to his wife, "Mrs. General Custer, Fort Riley, Kansas," bearing an affixed three-cent postage stamp, postmarked Fort Harker, Kansas, April 28th (1870). *The Kansas Historical Society reports that between May 3 - 15, 1870, General Custer and the remaining troops of the 7th Cavalry passed through Fort Harker on their way from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Hays, to engage the American Indians further west. Though they cannot pinpoint the exact dates it is possible that Custer arrived as early as the 28th of April (when this letter is postmarked) or had an advance party drop off this letter to be posted to his wife before his arrival. Whatever the circumstances, this was Custer's only documented appearance at Fort Harker (1870) and he left with the objective of pursuing the Indians in combat. Very good condition.         Album - "Flotte De Nos jours" - Beautifully Mounted Naval Lithographs

France, 1870. France, circa 1870. A lovely album presentation of nineteenth century ships of the French Navy Fleet illustrated in lithograph, with a frontis scene and a French title page with gilt lettering. Oblong 8vo. contains 15 nautical lithographs compiled and neatly mounted on cardstock leafs by an unknown naval enthusiast who frames each image with manuscript lines. In an elegant early twentieth century binding, gilt tooled navy boards with four raised bands to spine, titled to front and spine, with a lovely nautical motif of gilt ships and anchors. Volume measures approximately 20 x 25 x cm. Very good condition, a pleasing nautical volume. Title: "Flotte de nos Jours" [Our Fleet Today] This work represents the revival of the French Navy after suffering greatly during the Revolution. With tireless effort and generous investment, during the nineteenth century, the French Navy not only recovered, but became the second finest in the world after the Royal Navy. Each flying the colours of France, mid-nineteenth century sailing vessels herein illustrated at sea include a frigate that may very well be the Napoléon (1850-1876), some ironclad battleships such as Gloire (1859) and Solférino (1859), examples of the Algésiras class steam ships of the line such as Redoutable (1857) and Borda (1864). We also find a singular example of an ocean-worthy was a three-masted wooden-hulled steam and sail and paddle frigate similar to Descartes. The Napoléon was a 90-gun ship of the line of the French Navy, and the first purpose-built steam battleship in the world. She is also considered the first true steam battleship, and the first screw battleship in history. . Very Good.

[Ellis, F.S.- Autograph Letter to Alice Boyd] Fascinating Letter About Proposed Book by Christina Rossetti, the Manuscript of Which has never been Found.

Three pages. An important letter by the famed publisher F. S. Ellis to Alice Boyd, lover and companion of William Bell Scott and resident at Penkill Castle, in Ayrshire, Scotland. "33 King St., Covent Garden, June 2, 1870. Dear Miss Boyd, There have been so many unfathomable opinions on the Graphotype process lately and the cuts seem to work so unsatisfactorily under it that I feel quite doubtful whether I ought to go on with it, at any rate I must ask you not make any more designs for the present for if this process will not do I fear the book will have to be abandoned as the expense of cutting woodblocks would be too great I am afraid, for so small a book... " He continues, "... If you would let me know how much I am indebted to you so far I should be very much obliged..." He further elaborates in supplying ample evidence of his willingness to remunerate Boyd for her losses, "Whatever be the ultimate determination about the book, it will be quite my own fault for I feel that it was quite at my desire you have persevered with this Graphotype process against your own wishes. Believe me, Yours Faithfully, F. S. Ellis." A fascinating letter maligning a controversial printing process and the proposed book using its process, which remains somewhat clouded in mystery to this day. From the book, "Christina Rossetti and Illustration: A Publishing History," by Lorraine Janzen Koistra: "Alice Boyd's 'Day Diaries' note the reception of a letter from F. S. Ellis on 4 June, 1870, remarking, 'He is for giving up CGR's book...' (Penkill Papers box 7). Further, "A Catalogue of Books, Manuscripts at Penkill Castle, Ayrshire," lists a collection of manuscript poems for "Sing-Song," by CGR, as well as 85 pen and pencil drawings, 9 proofs, etc., which has never been found. Finally, a letter by Alice Boyd dated 15 June, 1870 to Ellis states she {i.e. Boyd] had prepared 66 designs for the book as adjunctive material, when production was halted. An amazing survival and full of historical import.
