        Five Weeks in a Balloon

Published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1870, this is the excessively Rare First British Edition, First Printing of the author's first book, this was the first Jules Verne book to be printed in England, and the only Verne title to be published by Chapman and Hall. An early ballooning adventure novel set in Africa, internally illustrated with the sixty four drawings by Riou as used in the later Sampson Low printings, The book is bound in the original cloth boards with blind impressed patterning to boards and gilt illustration to spine, and has been re-cased, not brilliantly, but preserving most of the original cloth with some loss and damage to bottom around the publishers imprint, the boards have some mild marking with a small area of damp marking to cloth at lower corner of upper board, fitted with new endpapers, old blurred ownership ink stamp to half title page (pictured) some noticeable brown spotting and occasional handling marks to a few pages, , mild edge wear damage to a couple of page edges, else overall contents in good general condition, a good acceptable example in the original cloth binding of what is quite probably the ultimate British Jules Verne Rarity, only two copies listed on Copac, one in the British Library and the other in the V&A Library,

[Anonymous manuscript titled:] The Early History Of Kilwa. No place, ca. 1870.

1870. 8vo (ca. 205 x 130 mm). 44 pp. Stitched manuscript written in a legible hand on the recto of the leaves, without a front cover. Historically important chronicle of the Kilwa Sultanate, from the third century to the year 908 according to the Hijri calendar (ca. 10th to 16th centuries in the Gregorian Calendar), drawn from the chronicles collected by the nephew of Fakih Mufalih, a Kilwa dignitary. "The chronology of rulers of the Kilwa Sultanate is reported in a chronicle translated into Portuguese in the 16th century, and recorded by the chronicler João de Barros. There is another surviving chronicle by an unknown author, written in the early 16th century, and compiled in 1862 by (or for) sheikh Moheddin (Majid) of Zanzibar" (Wikipedia). It seems likely that this present chronicle is an early English translation or at least based on the Zanzibar chronicle of 1862. The chapter headings of the present chronicle are as follows: Chapter I: Of the first coming to Kilwa and its foundation by Persian princes of the district of Shiraz; Chapter II: Concerning the troubles of the people of Kilwa with the Matamandili; Chapter III; Concerning the rule of Abu Il Mawahib and giving a short account of his history; Chapter IV: Of the government of the Priest King whose surname was "The Early Rain"; Chapter 5: Of the return of the Sultanate to the house of Abu Il Matthhab; Chapter VI: Of the government of Hassan the son of the Wazir Suleman bin Malik Il'adl the of the Wazir Yarik, and therein the story of the Wazir Mohammed Kiwabi the son of the Sultan the Injured; Chapter VII: Of the government of the Sultan Jathil the son of the Sultan Suleman the Just King the uncle of the Sultan Mohammed Ibu Hosein. "The Kilwa Sultanate was a Medieval sultanate, centered at Kilwa (an island off modern-day Tanzania), whose authority, at its height, stretched over the entire length of the Swahili Coast. It was founded in the 10th century by Ali ibn al-Hassan Shirazi, a Persian prince of Shiraz. His family ruled the Sultanate until the year 1277. It was replaced by the Arab family of Abu Moaheb until 1505, when it was overthrown by a Portuguese invasion. By 1513, the sultanate was already fragmented into smaller states, many of which became protectorates of the Sultanate of Oman. At the zenith of its power in the 15th century, the Kilwa Sultanate owned or claimed overlordship over the mainland cities of Malindi, 25 Inhambane and Sofala and the island-states of Mombasa, Pemba, Zanzibar, Mafia, Comoro and Mozambique (plus numerous smaller places) - essentially what is now often referred to as the "Swahili Coast". Kilwa also claimed lordship across the channel over the myriad of small trading posts scattered on the coast of Madagascar (then known by its Arabic name of Island of the Moon). To the north, Kilwa's power was checked by the independent Somali city-states of Barawa (a self-ruling aristocratic republic) and Mogadishu (the once-dominant city, Kilwa's main rival). To the south, Kilwa's reach extended as far as Cape Correntes, below which merchant ships did not usually dare sail"(Wikipedia). - First page with some toning and a few small ink spots, but overall the manuscript is in very good condition.

        IN FAIRYLAND

London: Longmans, Green, Reader, & Dyer, 1870. First edition. Occasional light soiling, about fine. sun fading to edges of slipcase. Quite a nice copy of this rare book. First edition. Folio. [5 leaves], 31 leaves printed and numbered on versos only. Illustrated with 16 full-page color plates by Doyle engraved and printed in color by Edmund Evans. Nicely rebound in quarter tan crushed morocco with marbled sides and endpapers, a.e.g. in cloth slipcase. See illustration in Peppin. Fantasy, The Golden Age of Fantastic Illustration, p. 65. "Perhaps the single most popular and influential series of fairy illustrations ever produced." (Johnson. Fantastic Illustration and Design in Britain, 1850-1930, p. 63). "Looking within himself, Doyle found a fantastic, but consistently imagined world in which fairies and elves live in the open air among birds, butterflies, snails, and beetles as large as themselves. If his elves and fairies also like to congregate, their convivalities, unlike those of his massed human beings, are never oppressive. Edmund Evans's fine wood engravings for this volume are the largest that he made during his long career as a color printer." (Gordon Ray. English. No. 146.) "It is generally felt that Richard Doyle rose to his greatest heights with the graceful clusters of humanized and sentimentalized but endearing little elves he created for In Fairy-land. In the case of this book the pictures preceded the text, a situation not uncommon in the history of illustrated children's books." (Gottlieb. Early Children's Book and Their Illustration. No. 168).

1870. 8vo. 4 pp. Letter draft to an unnamed correspondent, in which Liszt expresses his ideas for a concert which will be held at the Salle Erard at Paris and which will comprise many of his compositions.         Inauguration du Canal du Suez. Voyage des Souverains, aquarelles d'après nature et portraits par Riou. [Paris, Lemercier & Cie., 1870].

1870. Folio (404 x 558 mm). 34 pp. With 17 lithographed plates (11 partly coloured by hand). (Bound with) II: Marius Fontane. Voyage pittoresque à travers l'Isthme de Suez, vingt-cinq grandes aquarelles d'après nature par Riou. Paris, Paul Dupont & E. Lachaud, [1870]. 76 (instead of 100) pp. With coloured map and 20 (of 25) chromolithographic plates. Contemporary red half morocco, giltstamped covers (arms of Ismail Pasha) and giltstamped title to spine. First edition. A chronicle of the elaborate festivities given for the inauguration of the Suez Canal (Qanat al-Suwais), opened in November 1869 after ten years of construction work - an event attended by the most prestigious occidental figures, finely illustrated by Riou, the Khedive's official painter. In 1854/56 Ferdinand de Lesseps obtained a concession from Sa'id Pasha, the Khedive of Egypt and Sudan, to create a company to construct a canal open to ships of all nations, which would allow ship transport between Europe and eastern Asia without navigation around Africa. Lesseps had used his friendly relationship with Sa'id, which he had developed while he was a French diplomat during the 1830s. In 1863, Sa'id was succeeded by his nephew Ismail, known as The Magnificent, who now oversaw the Egyptian portion of the Canal's construction. On his accession, he refused to ratify the concessions to the Canal company made by Said, insisting on numerous changes upon in the original grant. Ismail then used every available means, by his own powers of fascination and by judicious expenditure, to bring his personality before the foreign sovereigns and public. In 1867 he visited Paris and London, where he was received by Queen Victoria and welcomed by the Lord Mayor. While in Britain he also saw a British Royal Navy Fleet Review with the Ottoman Sultan. In 1869 he again paid a visit to Britain. When the Canal finally opened, Ismail held a festival of unprecedented scope, inviting dignitaries from around the world. Ismail himself performed the grand opening, together with French Empress Eugenie in the Imperial yacht "Aigle", piloted by Napoléon Coste who was bestowed by the Khedive the Order of the Medjidie. - The painter Riou also signed the plates of the second part: a detailed account of the canal construction by Marius Fontane, secretary to Lesseps. 500 copies of Fontane's work were printed, with 200 reserved for the Khedive Ismail, of which this is one. As the Khedive objected to the preface of Fontane's work, which gave credit for the canal to Lesseps, he had removed Lesseps' portrait frontispiece, the preface, and the final six gatherings (which included plates 21-25). - Occasional foxing to plates, otherwise an excellent copy. I: Blackmer 1198, 611. Heritage Library, Islamic Treasures, s. v. "Art". OCLC 458881758. Cf. Ibrahim-Hilmy II, 66 (1869). II: Cf. Ibrahim-Hilmy I, 235. Gay 2439 (both citing 25 plates).

Attractively bound collection of the first editions of these four humorous works written in thick Derbyshire dialect (the first sentence here reads "Frend, ah gey thee my hond, ah dunna mene tow fingers, bur a gud grip, az tha'll feel tinglin e aw thy veins"). => Three of the pieces include glossaries of some of the more opaque terms. Two of the essays recount visits to the extensive and interesting => Midland Counties Fine Arts and Industrial Exhibition of 1870, and the final entry features a lengthy appendix offering a more serious look at => Matlock-Bank, its hydropathic establishments, and its other landmarks, this in standard English. Mr. Smedley's Hydropathic Establishment, referenced in the text, is the first business appearing in the subsequent advertisement section, which is extensive, evocative, and contains => many ads embellished with little recommendations (by "Twitcher"?) in Darbyshire doggerel. The author, who spent most of his life in Derby, was a sculptor as well as a Derbyshire historian, and he appears to have supplied the => original illustrations here himself. The two pairs of plates (one lithographed, one steel-engraved) are done in notably different styles — we suspect that two different engravers worked from Robinson's sketches. Robinson wrote one additional Twitcher piece in 1881, describing a visit to the Royal Agricultural Show, not included in this gathering. All the Twitcher books are now scarce: WorldCat finds very few U.K. holdings of these titles and virtually no U.S. Provenance: First text page with early pencilled ownership inscription of Mr. H. Mills in upper outer corner. Later quarter green calf and fine combed marbled paper–covered sides, spine with gilt-stamped title; minor shelfwear. Pencilled ownership note as above. Light age-toning; first two works with mild foxing and last leaves with avery light, old waterstain across a lower corner. => A highly personal production in text *and* illustration; an entertaining and very uncommon gathering.

A Collection of five first editions by Alfred Tennyson from the Library of Arthur Tennyson, four INSCRIBED.

All five volumes are in original green cloth, rubbed, with fore edges of boards uniformly affected by damp.1. The Holy Grail, Strahan, 1870. INSCRIBED on leading blank: 'Arthur & Harriet From Alfred & Emily'.2. Queen Mary, Henry S. King, 1875. INSCRIBED on e.p.: 'Arthur Tennyson from Alfred'.3. Harold, Henry S. King, 1877. INSCRIBED on half title: 'Arthur & Harriet Tennyson from Alfred'.4. The Lover's Tale, C. Kegan Paul, 1879. INSCRIBED on e.p. in pencil: 'A & H Tennyson, Clifton, Bristol, June 6th 1879 from the Author Ad. T.'.5. Locksley Hall, Macmillan, 1886. With gift inscription for Christmas 1886 in pencil on leading blank, not from Alfred, and partially erased.Alfred and Arthur were the fourth and eighth of the twelve children born to the Reverend George Clayton Tennyson, 1778-1831, and Elizabeth Ffytche, 1781-1865. Arthur, 1814-1899, who married Harriet West, is one of the 'lost brothers' of the family; no letters to or from him are recorded in the Tennyson Letters ed. by Lang & Shannon. The inscriptions in these volumes are probably in Arthur's hand. His grandfather suggests in 1827 that Arthur becomes a 'cadet or into the Navy'. In 1831 he writes: 'I don't know what Arthur is fit for. He still does not know the Multiplication Tables or indeed anything useful. He could learn if he would but he is idle as a Foal. He must be instructed before he can be fit for anything and his gestures and twitchings etc. are ridiculous and he would be a subject of ridicule anywhere.' Another letter from Cecilia Tennyson refers to Arthur as 'my poor brother' (1837).By 1843, Arthur was voluntarily admitted to Dumfries Asylum in an attempt to cure his alcoholism - and was visited there by Thomas Carlyle. Later in the year he travelled with Frederick and Septimus to Italy - and stayed there for the next twelve years. In 1852, Emily Tennyson refers to 'Arthur's book of sketches' and Charles says that he is 'going to put up at Arthur's'. He is mentioned only once in a letter from Alfred, writing to H.K. Atkinson in November 1873: '... Arthur is married, but has no family ...'.Little else seems to be known; Harriet West died at some point (date not found) and Arthur remarried Louisa Maynard. Interestingly, Alfred purchased his house, Farringford, on the Isle Of Wight, from the Reverend George Turner Seymour - of Clifton, Bristol, the address for Arthur & Harriet mentioned in the inscription to The Lover's Tale.

[Les champignons de la France].[Paris, ca. 1869]. Imperial oblong 4to (25 x 35.5 cm). An album containing 60 original mycological (mushroom) drawings in brown ink and coloured gouaches (light brown, orange, yellow, red, blue, green, dark brown, black). Sewn and loosely inserted in later(?) gray-brown paper wrappers.

Cf. Myko Libri 427; Nissen, BBI 404; Stafleu & Cowan 1229. A complete set of 61 drawings (about 300 figures) of about 110 species of mushrooms, prepared as models for the 60 chromolithographic plates in François-Simon Cordier?s Les champignons de la France (Paris, Jules Rothschild, 1870; printed by Adolphe Lainé). The drawings are unsigned, but the book notes that they were drawn from life by "A.D. Cordier" (title-page) or "Mlle Delville-Cordier" (pp. ix-x). This was the author's adopted daughter Aimée-Eugénie Delville-Cordier (1822 or 1826-1899).François-Simon Cordier (1797-1874), a Paris physician, mycologist and founding member and president of the Société Botanique de France, published several books on mushrooms beginning in 1826. Les champignons de France is his most important work. We find no record of his ever having married, but in 1852 he adopted Aimée-Eugénie. One must wonder if she was either Cordier's biological daughter or his mistress's daughter from an earlier relation, but we have found no further information. She showed two portraits at the 1855 Exposition des Beaux-Arts and had a successful career as a portrait painter. In very good condition.

Wagner is not only the greatest genius, he is also the greatest heart" - Autograph Letter Signed

      - A very interesting autograph letter in English from the daughter of Franz Liszt who became the second wife of Richard Wagner and, after his death, the director of the Bayreuth Festival for 31 years. Addressed to Elisabeth [lacking salutation], the letter gives news of events surrounding her recent wedding to Wagner. 4 pages, 8vo, written on a folded sheet; horizontal folds. Dated "[Villa] Tribschen bei Luzern," 2 September 1870. An important letter. "Immediately after having received your dear letter (last Tuesday), my friend, I sent a dispatch in which I prayed you and Carl to come for the baptism of our little boy [Siegfried, b. 6 June 1869]; I also begged an answer. As this answer is not arrived, I must think that the movements of the new formed army [related to Franco-Prussian War?] have prevented the [ex]pedition of the dispatch. . . . Bulow was very satisfied of his sojourn in Italy [Bülow had left Munich in 1869 and settled in Italy], and that happily his mother was not with him, for the wors[t] of his pain in Munich had been the presence of that agitated being. Now I am sure Isa [daughter, Isolde?] does not want to have her mother either, and as Hans is more delicate, he won't [offend?] her and get her! . . . Here['s] a little photograph of three of my children; the oldest is nicer as on the picture; the third has been ill a fortnight which made me very anxious, now it is almost passed. I send also a little image of the house where we live, and where I am very sad not to have seen you. You see it is very rural indeed, but I like this spot, it is the only one on earth where I found peace and love. My health has got much better, but I can endure no noise and no fatigue still; but if I continue to live as I have done for a long time I am sure I will get all my strength again. I was very surprised to receive so many proofs of sympathy at the occasion of my wedding day; as I have been completely silent towards everybody, except my sister and you, I thought every body had either forgotten me or did not care for me; I was extremely touched to receive property protestations of friendship and devotedness. The family of Wagner has also behaved with much kindness; and now I only pray God to give me the form to accomplish the great mission he has confided to me. Wagner is not only the greatest genius, he is also the greatest heart you may think, and his love to me is something so inexpressible that I always believe the dream, knowing too well I don't deserve such a treasure. . . . Daniella [daughter, Daniela?] wrote to her aunt and to her grandmother some time ago, but had no answer. I don't know if they wish not to hear any thing of the children . . . . I know I would never have been for my children what I am, had I not [met?] the wonderful being who has delivered me from life and death. Wagner pays his compliments to Carl and his best regards to you. I embrace you my beloved Elisabeth . . ."

Herbarium - Edible & Medicinal Herbs Harvested By a German Botanist

Germany, 1870. Germany, circa 1870s. Herbarium of 89 authentic botanical specimens, edible and medicinal, neatly mounted to individual leafs with small paper strips, most identified in manuscript captions in German and in Latin, some in fine calligraphy, some also with classification numbers, the lot contained in purpose made string-tied continental boards. Folio. Item measures approximately 37 x 23 cm. Wear to extremities of boards, chips to a scant few leafs, otherwise in very good condition. Specimens are in excellent condition. Harvested by a meticulous German botanist and centering largely on medicinal and herbaceous plants, this collection includes one nightshade, a purple orchid, the now endangered cornflower, and a specimen from the poppy family. A few examples of the specimens found in this nineteenth century herbarium: Fumara officinales - an herbaceous annual flowering plant in the poppy family, commonly known as fumitory, drug fumitory or earth smoke. It was traditionally thought to be good for the eyes, and to remove skin blemishes. In modern times herbalists use it to treat skin diseases, and conjunctivitis, as well as to cleanse the kidneys. Centaurea cyanus, "Kornblume" or cornflower, which today is endangered in its native habitat owing to agricultural intensification with over-use of toxic herbicides. In herbalism, a decoction of cornflower is effective in treating conjunctivitis, and as a wash for tired eyes. They are often used as an ingredient in some tea blends and herbal teas, most famously in the Lady Grey blend of Twinings. Orchis maculata, or Early Purple Orchid, now called the Dactylorhiza maculata, known as the heath spotted-orchid or moorland spotted orchid, an herbaceous perennial. The specific Latin name "maculata" (spotted) refers to the stained leaves. The scientific binomial name of this plant was initially Orchis maculata, proposed by the Swedish naturalist and botanist Carl von Linné (1707-1778) in 1753. The name has been subsequently amended to the one currently accepted (Dactylorhiza maculata) in 1962 by the Hungarian botanist Károly Rezso Soó (1903-1980). Solanum nigrum - the non-poisonous European black nightshade. Parts of this plant can be toxic to livestock and humans. Nonetheless, ripe berries and cooked leaves of edible strains are used as food in some locales, and plant parts are used as a traditional medicine. S. nigrum is a widely used plant in oriental medicine where it is considered to be antitumorigenic, antioxidant, anti-infammatory, hepatoprotective, diuretic, and antipyretic. Johanneskraut - Hypericum perforatum popularly known as St John's Wort and used widely for its medicinal properties as an antidepressant and anti-inflammatory Four species of Veronica - (the genus also known as speedwell, bird's eye, gypsyweed), including the Veronica beccabunga or brooklime which was one of only three antiscorbutic herbs traditionally used to treat scurvy. Two specimens of Euphrasia (Eyebright), a genus of about 450 species of herbaceous flowering plants, including the Euphrasia officinales which is use in homeopathic medicine since the 14th century when it was described as a cure for all eye maladies. It has also been used for respiratory issues, skin wounds, and the measles. Lycopus europaeus - commonly known as gypsywort or bugleweed, and reputed to have medicinal qualities and has been used as an astringent, narcotic and refrigerant. The term The name gypsywort derives from the belief that Romani people would stain their skin with the juice of the plant. Chrysosplenium alternifolium - a delicate ground cover which is in decline through a large part of its range because of the decrease of suitable wetland habitat, and which is protected in some parts of France. Malva rotundifolia (Round-leaved Mallow) - an annual herbaceous plant, the leaves of which, at the time of this collection, were applied externally as a remedy for scurvy, and the seeds used to treat ulcerations of the bladder, in Sindh and perhaps other regions. The edible Lepidium campestre (field pepperwort or field pepperweed), of the mustard family The unusual Mercurialis annua known by the common name annual mercury, which has a complex reproductive system which makes them the ideal model plant for studying sexual systems in plants. Potentilla argentea or Silver Cinquefoil - The major components of interest in potentilla species are tannins of the ellagic-acid type, with monomeric and dimeric ellagitannins, which act as an astringent, aiding in the clotting of blood in minor cuts. The herb also contains antioxidant flavonoids. Lamium album or white nettle, an herbaceous perennial, its young leaves are edible and can be used in salads or cooked as a vegetable. Bees, especially bumble bees are attracted to the flowers which are a good source of early nectar and pollen, hence the plant is sometimes called the bee nettle. Myosotis palustris (syn. Myosotis scorpioides), the water forget-me-not, used in the treatment of whooping cough and bronchitis Vicia sepium - a leguminous climbing plant with high nutritional value, both its roots and flowers being edible. Bumblebees and honeybees are attracted to the flowers for their nectar. It is commonly called bush vetch. Atriplex hastata - known by the common names of saltbush and orache, a unique plant with unisexual flowers and the ability to retain salt in their leaves thus also to grow in areas affected by soil salination. Historically, the hastata was a food in rural Eurasia. The herbaceous Centaurea jacea (brown knapweed), its root being a bitter tonic, diuretic and stomachic, excellent for treating difficult digestive systems, and also still used in rural areas to reduce the temperature of feverish children. Viola canina also known as the dog violet, was once used by physicians to induce vomiting or purge the bowels. . Very Good.

[COLLECTION OF PROCLAMATIONS AND DOCUMENTS FROM NUEVO LEÓN IN THE MID-19th CENTURY]

[Mexico, 1870. 136 documents, various lengths. Seventy-eight proclamations and circulars, approximately legal sized; three larger broadside proclamations; thirty- one manuscript orders and letters; engravings, forms, and periodicals. Some edge wear and minor soiling throughout. In an archival box. Very good. An archive of printed and manuscript documents relating to political and military activities in the Mexican state of Nuevo León in the middle of the 19th century. During this period the state strongly considered separation with Mexico beginning in the 1850s, threatening secession and later investigating possible negotiations with the Confederacy, but it also played a role in the resistance to the rule of the French and Maximilian in the 1860s. These issues, as well as more practical matters of governance, are addressed principally through printed proclamations as well as manuscript orders and correspondence addressed to the towns of Hualahuises and Linares, located to the south of Monterrey, and to their government officials. The collection also includes two engravings of Maximilian, and ephemeral items such as two short periodicals and blank Mexican government forms. A full inventory of all items is available.
