Tallahassee, 1869. Twelve volumes. Uniformly bound in 20th-century tan cloth, gilt leather labels. Library stamps on titlepages and several other leaves. Scattered wear and soiling throughout the run. Good. A scarce run of 19th-century Florida laws, from the state's fifth session through it's ninth, with several adjourned sessions included, as well. The run skips over the Civil War, picking back up after reunification with the Union. This provides an interesting look at the state's laws after the war and during Reconstruction.

GIDE, André (1869-1951)
Superb portrait by Philippe Halsman, gelatin silver print, 6 x 4 1/2 inches on 9 3/8 x 7 inch mount, signed "Halsman Paris" on the mount beneath the image and with his stamp on verso of the mount. Item #401085 A fine presentation inscription by André Gide (1869-1951): "pour Waldo Frank en affectieuse souvenir André Gide." Waldo Frank (1889-1967) -- American novelist, critic and political activist -- wrote extensively for 'The New Yorker' and 'The New Republic' in the 1920s. In his memoirs, Frank wrote: "My first personal encounter with Gide was a parable. Gide invited me to lunch and was to pick me up at noon at the offices of NRF... Gide rushed in, a little late... 'Come,' he grasped my arm, not my hand. 'there's a big fire... the magasins du Printemps are on fire. I have a police pass.' He pushed me into the waiting taxi, 'Do you like fires? I never miss a fire.'..." Of Gide's work, Frank wrote: "Gide's general theme is the disintegration of the self, as the self has been regarded by the centuries of the Judeo-Christian culture. It is still believed in, still defended. But the revealment that this self is doomed and no new form of the self yet emerged from our cultural chaos gave Gide timelessness and power" (Frank, Memoirs, University of Massachusetts Press, 1973, pp.117-118). Philippe Halsman opened his Montparnasse studio in 1934 and photographed many well-known artists and writers. Gide was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947. Anglo-American auction results record only one inscribed photograph by Gide.

MANBY, George William.
, . . "Captain Manby's apparatus for wrecks", in: The Edinburgh review XXXVIII, pp. 332-349; Catalogue of Parliamentary reports... 1869-1834, p. 71 no. 28. Rare compilation of papers for the parliament of the United Kingdom, commonly found bound in series, related to a plan in regards to the rescue of shipwrecked persons. The proposal included the placement throughout the country of so-called "Manby mortars" throughout the country. This mortar fired a shot with a line to a wrecked ship and could be lighted with a special wind-proof pistol. The line could be used for communication purposes, as well as to connect to specially designed lifeboats.George William Manby (1765-1854) was an English author and inventor. Appointed barrack-master at Great Yarmouth in 1803, he witnessed the wrecking of the brig Snipe in 1807, with over 60 casualties. This tragedy inspired him to think about both the equipment available for rescue as well as the means of communication between a wrecked ship and the shore. Manby's inventions were brought before parliament in 1810 and the placement of his inventions along the coast was finally agreed on in 1816.Waterstain throughout lower margins; last leaf with some foxing; a good copy.

Pollard, Edward A.
Schaffter & Bryant, Printers, Lynchburg, 1869. 32pp. Bound in modern plain wrappers, else Very Good. "Pollard had published an account of the 'elopement' a sister of James Grant who, taking offense at it, shot him in the back with a shotgun on the streets of Richmond. The jury acquitted him, apparently having its own ideas of the freedom of the press" [McDade]. This pamphlet describes the "assassination," prints the argument of John Gilmer, who prosecuted the defendant, the Judge's charge to the jury, and several "suppressed letters to the New York Herald" in which Edward protests "those who vilified my dead brother," including the Herald. Edward Pollard was the well-known contemporary historian of the Confederacy. Henry Pollard was the editor of the 'Southern Opinion,' a Richmond newspaper. He was killed on November 24, 1868. A week before his death he published a report of the 'elopement.' "About ten o'clock on the morning of the 24th, as Pollard, the editor of the paper, was near his office door, a shot was fired from the upper window of an opposite building. Pollard was instantly killed, eleven buckshot having entered his body, one passing through his heart. James Grant, a brother of the young lady named, was found in one of the rooms," with the fired gun near him. The previous day James had demanded a retraction, which Pollard refused, upon which James promised to shoot Pollard on sight. [Hudson, Journalism in the United States from 1690-1872, page 765. New York: 1873]. McDade 376. Haynes 14272. Cappon 2453. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Cooper, George
Wm. A. Pond, 1869. Two stanzas and chorus, on one page, in ink. 4to. "Sweet Genevieve" by Stephen Foster's Friend, George Cooper. Fine. One of the most popular songs of the 19th century, with music by Henry Tucker, "Sweet Genevieve" is one of the few surviving song by George Cooper (1838-1927?), whose friendship with Stephen Foster in the last few months of Foster's life has been well documented. The two evidently collaborated on some songs together, which are now lost. It was Cooper who discovered the prostrate body of his stricken friend on the Bowery the day before Foster died, and who informed the family of his death. Autograph lyrics of George Cooper are of the utmost rarity.

Catlin, George
[St. Louis, 1869. Handcolored lithograph, after George Catlin. Sheet size: 18 x 23 7/8 inches. Two old, soft diagonal creases, mat burn in the margins, tape remnants to verso of top edge, small tape reinforcement to bottom right corner, a couple of marginal small chips and very short closed tears, not affecting image. Good plus. A rare lithographic view of the early St. Louis riverfront, the print is based on one of the very first oil paintings of a city in the trans-Mississippi West, George Catlin's 1832-33 oil on canvas, "St. Louis From the River Below." The original painting was once owned by the St. Louis Mercantile Library Association and now by the Missouri Historical Society. Another version of the painting hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The print was probably published under the auspices of the Mercantile Library to celebrate its acquisition of the painting, circa 1865-69. The actual publisher, lithographer, and printer remain unknown. Reps states in ST. LOUIS ILLUSTRATED: "The few impressions existing in public collections suggest that this print may have been issued in only a limited number of copies." The well-detailed and attractive print depicts "St. Louis, with its terraced foundations, just a decade after it was chartered as a city. The artist has appropriately given prominence to the broad Mississippi, which was the lifeblood of the nascent metropolis. He lets the water dominate more than three-quarters of the composition, and he places in full view the odd-looking, high-decked river steamboat specially designed by Henry Miller Shreve for the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hine, L. A. (Lucius Alonzo), editor and author
Cincinnati: L. A. Hine, 1869. Hardcover. Very Good. Thick 8vo, bound in half leather, very good. A haphazardly bound assemblage of L. A. Hine's works on economics and social and political reform, including a copy of his very rare anti-banking and pro-justice-reform novel, The Money-Changers (1860) of which there are only two copies in OCLC. Hine was a Cincinnati-based lawyer who edited a number of journals. Frank Luther Mott in his history of American magazines noted that all of Hine's journals ended in failure, but are 'not without value.' He was indoctrinated with revolutionary political ideas and could be considered a pre-socialist revolutionary, a firm communitarian and advocate for women's suffrage. This bound volume collects the first four issues of Hine's Quarterly (probably all published), the last issue of which does not have a title page, but its pagination takes up where the third issue ends. The first piece in this volume, 'The National Banks' appears to be advance sheets for publication in the April 1869 of the same 32 pp. article. Toward the end, there are selections from Hine's major work on Political and Social Economy that was first printed in 1851, again in 1856-57, and again in 1861; these are apparently from the last printing, 1861. An interesting and rare assortment of works from an author who was heavily involved in National Reform politics, which offered a broad critique of wealth accumulation, banks, the justice system, voting laws, land acquisition and disposition, and labor reform.
