Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
London: Stangeways and Walden, [1869]. First edition. A unique and most interesting offering - a scarce privately printed book accompanied by only recently published handwritten letters from Rossetti's brother, William Michael (the texts of the letters were published for the first time in "Notes and Queries," Oxford University Press, in January 17, 2011). This is a privately printed edition of a story that had first appeared in The Germ in 1850. Dante Gabriel Rossetti originally intended to include this prose story in his volume of verse, but decided not to following the recovery of his poetical manuscript notebook from the grave of his wife, Elizabeth Siddal. This short story offers a manifesto for the Aesthetic and Decadent movements. It tells the tale of a fictional Renaissance poet who realizes that the artist's only duty is to express what is in his soul. This pamphlet is an offprint from the typesetting found in proofs produced between October 30 and November 25 1869. William Rossetti notes when his brother excluded the story from his published verse he had various copies of Hand and Soul done up in drab wrappers, and that he gave some away but never sold them. Both Thomas Wise and Charles Fairfax Murray state, without citing any authority, that one hundred copies were printed. About thirty can now be accounted for. All but a handful are in institutional collections, most deriving from a cache discovered by William after Dante Gabriel's death in 1882. William Michael Rossetti sent this copy to an admirer of his family, Louisa Douglas Summerbell. She was an artist and … [Click Below for Full Description]

De la sclérose en plaques disséminées. 1869. Adrien Delahaye. Paris. 1885. G. Masson. Alcott. LITTLE WOMEN very early 1869 ~January 1869 2nd printing 3 mos after 1st Alcott. LITTLE WOMEN very early 1869 ~January 1869 2nd printing 3 mos after 1st Click images to enlarge Description Louisa M Alcott. Little Women. Roberts Brothers. 1869. [First printed October 1868.] Frontispiece with tissue guard. Chocolate endpapers. 6 pp. adverts to rear. The first printing was October 1868. Little Women was originally published in two parts, with Part Second published in April, 1869. The first printing of Part First had no labeling of Part First to the spine: that is the earliest form of binding. [BAL 158]. And, the first printing lacked any statement at page 341 that Little Women (Part Two) is published in a second volume. This copy is one of the earliest printings of the first edition as it lacks Part First to the spine. And, it lacks the statement at p. 341 noting that Little Women (Part Two) is published in a second volume. (Some further evidence is provided by a brief gift inscription to the flyleaf dated January 1969 -- just three months after the first printing and before Little Women (Part Two) was published.) Unlike this volume's 6 pages of adverts to the rear, later volumes printed in 1869 -- with the statement at p. 341 and hence presumably after April 1869 -- had ten pages of adverts to the rear. So this is most likely the earliest form of a second printing. Printed just three months after the first. Cloth with very good color. Minor rubbing to corners, some wrinkling to cloth on front board, minor rubbing to spine and light wear to spine heel. Re-cased, using t … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition of great rarity (impossible the find). Nice overall condition, work with clean and healthy book block; scratches and the tape reinforcements on the covers. Based for obvious reasons on a geocentric view of the world, the Church armed with the Holy Office chased tirelessly scientists denouncing the universe of Aristotle. Giordano Bruno and many other anonymous heretics were burnt on behalf of the defence of arbitrary order. Galileo, who knew how to handle and protect himself from the obscurantism of the Roman Curia, only had real problems after 70. The trial which followed experienced multiple comments with multiple intentions. Our work presented here educated the mass with ‘contemporary documents' attaches to sift through what was said previously. To support and remarkable as that may be, the outcome (reworking of a series of articles in the journal Catholic of Louvain) remains no less an attempt of exemption for the Catholic Church, in order to mitigate the brutality with which Rome silenced the great scholar.EUR 3.980,00 Versandkostenfrei innerhalb Deutschlands Aufgenommen mit whBOOK Sicheres Bestellen - Order-Control geprüft! Gary, Clemmitt & Jones, Printers, Richmond, VA, 1869. FIRST EDITION. 117 pp. Softcover in original wraps. Original string-tied binding. Signatures have essentially all loosened from the original string, but all pages and text are here. Also included, and what really sets this copy apart, is the large foldout MAP in the front, bound behind the front wrap. Foxing throughout and some staining/soiling as well. The condition is not the greatest, but it is complete and these are incredibly SCARCE, rarely coming to market, and none are or have been available that I can find with the map. This book gives a complete listing of The Confederate Dead buried in Hollywood up until 1869. The more prominent names such as Pickett and Davis were not interred until years later after their deaths. In spite of the condition, this one being complete makes it an increidbly desirable copy of this SCARCE and important work. Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

LITTLE WOMEN 1869 2nd printing ~ printed about January 1869 Alcott. LITTLE WOMEN 1869 2nd printing ~ printed about January 1869 Click images to enlarge Description Louisa M Alcott. Unlike this volume's 6 pages of adverts to the rear, later volumes printed in 1869 -- with the statement at p. 341 and hence presumably after April 1869 -- had ten pages of adverts to the rear. So this is most likely the earliest form of a second printing. Printed just three months after the first. Cloth with very good color. Minor rubbing. Gilt to front remains bright and attractive. Spine color not faded and gilt remains bright. Externally about very good +. Binding firm. Inner hinges strengthened with Japanese paper. … [Click Below for Full Description]

G T Brown
Condition: Very Good. Very Good. 1869. Amazing lithograph by G.T. Brown measuring 36" x 20"; shrink-wrapped. Has not been examined out of shrink-wrap. Overall very good but has creasing and few tears around edges; 1" tear near top right corner, 1" piece missing on right edge, 4 -1/2" tear on right edge (affecting content), -1/2" tear on left edge; looks to be professionally repaired; colors are still bright. The original painting was created in 1849 for W.H. Jones by Henry Firks, and was lithographed by G.T. Brown in 1868. Grafton Tyler Brown (1841-1918) is arguably the most important West coast lithographer during the 1800s. Brown was a self-trained painter and a pioneer lithographer. "He took on the largest San Francisco lithographic firms in the 1860s and 70s and equaled or bettered them in design... his success is all the more remarkable because Brown was an African-American working at a time when racial prejudice barred blacks from entering into skilled professions" (San Francisco Lithographer: African American Artist Grafton, Tyler Brown). The most spectacular of Brown's works were his city views such as this one. This lithograph depicts a sparsely populated San Francisco Bay. An array of ships are pictured to the right of the central harbor, farms are seen along the shore, a collection of tents surrounding a campfire are to the far right, and mountains are visible in the background. Fifty-one ships and buildings found in the image are listed, with identifiers listed alongside the ship or building or in the margin. Two ships of note seen in this image are the Philadel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brownville, NE: 1869. Condition: Very Good. Brownville, NE. Very Good. 1869. Hardcover. On August 27, 1869, telegraph operator J. K. Bear stole $12,000 from the U. S. Express Company in Brownville, Nebraska. This handbill advertised a $1000 reward both for his capture, and for the return of the money. After Bear was arrested, he attempted to paint himself in a sympathetic light, insisting that he had wanted to return the leftover money after paying his debts. Bear went so far as to state that had he put the remaining money in a zinc box with all intent to do so, but misfortune intervened resulting in a zinc box at the bottom of the Missouri River. Unlike said zinc box, this scarce item of Americana has survived to tell part of the tale and is housed in a blue cloth folding chemise within a leather-backed blue cloth slipcase stamped in gilt on the spine. Handbill has three tiny tape repairs, penciling on verso suggests this came from the collection of Civil War collector Argus Osborn of Richmond, Indiana.; Book; 8vo - over 7-3/4 - 9-3/4" tall.
