He worked for eleven years for two mercantile firms, while studying in the evenings at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees, finally devoting himself full time to an artistic career from about 1875. He became an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1881, moving to London in 1882 where he was an immediate success. His 'My Love has gone a-Sailing' exhibited in 1884 was purchased by the Chantrey Trustees for the Tate Gallery. In 1891 Murray was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy, and a full member of the Royal Academy in 1905. About 1886 he broadened his horizons and traveled to the continent, but all of his more characteristic work was done in Scotland or England. Murray was a member of Glasgow Art Club and exhibited in the club's annual exhibitions. He became president of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in succession to Sir James Linton in 1917; the year before he was knighted in 1918. As his journey progressed so Wallace become a confirmed evolutionist, however it was not until he was suffering from a fever in the Moluccas that he came up with the theory of natural selection as the method of evolution. Gugler, Henry. [Abraham Lincoln]
c. 1869. Rare Henry Gugler engraving of President Abraham Lincoln, the largest engraved portrait of Lincoln produced. One of the foremost engravers of 19th century Germany, Gugler immigrated to the U.S. in 1853 where he found work with a New York firm specializing in bank note engraving. By the early 1860s he began working at the National Note Bureau, later known as the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. and in 1863, the National Note Bureau of Engraving and Printing hired him as one of their first vignette engravers. It was there that Gugler engraved the "The Pioneer" which appeared on the $5 and $20 United States bills. Gugler's most famous engraving was this life size steel engraving of President Abraham Lincoln; his most important work completed in 1869 after two years of work. In very good condition. In a period wooden frame with gilt inner border. The entire piece measures 27 by 22 inches. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He led the United States through its Civil War, and in doing so preserved the Union of the United States of America, abolished slavery, and strengthened the federal government. Lincoln began constructing his cabinet on election night and sought to create a cabinet that would unite the Republican party. His eventual cabinet would include his primary rivals for the Republican nomination and although his appointees held differing views on economic issues all were opposed to the expansion of slavery into the territories of the United States. [Texas]. [Reconstruction]
Marlin, Tx.; Austin, 1869. Very good.. Six printed and manuscript documents. Old folds, light wear and tanning. A small group of documents relating to the fraught election of 1869 in Texas, in which the state voted on approval of a new state constitution which, among other things, incorporated the terms of readmission to the Union under Reconstruction and decided on a new governor. "Texans began preparing for an election in the spring of 1869, though the election was not held until the following December. The two Republican factions ran opposing tickets. The radicals selected the man who had led them in the convention, Edmund J. Davis, and the moderates chose A. J. Hamilton. Hamilton actively pursued support among the former Democratic leadership in the subsequent campaign.... On January 11, 1870, General Reynolds declared that the new constitution had been ratified and that Edmund J. Davis had received an 800-vote majority" - Texas State Historical Association Online. Davis won despite attempts at voter intimidation and violence by supporters of the antebellum Democratic party. The most interesting document here is a copy of a letter from one of the candidates in Falls County, an A.M. Attwood, that describes the scenes on voting day in this rural area near Waco. It reads, in part: "The Davis ticket was beat here by 230 votes, we made a very good run the first day up to noon, when Shields, Evans, and all the forces they could raise went to work to stop the Col[ore]d voters from voting the Davis ticket, and our military not interfering, let them control the remain … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Cuba]. [Slavery]
Havana; Sagua la Grande, 1869. Good plus.. Two broadsides and one broadsheet, each approximately 12.5 x 8.75 inches. Partially printed formed completed in manuscript. Light wear and a few very short closed tears at edges. Moderate tanning and foxing. A group of three contracts for Chinese "coolie" laborers in Cuba at the end of the 1860s. The importation of Chinese labor to Cuba began in earnest in 1853, and in 1860, a law passed by the colonial government essentially enjoined Chinese workers to renew their agreements. The forms present here are three such contract renewals, signed by Chinese workers who had completed their initial term of indentured servitude, but had no recourse to fairer forms of employment or means to leave the island."The new law required a change in the contract that required coolies who completed their original term of service to recontract with the same or another master. Otherwise, they were obligated to leave Cuba within two months.... There is no doubt that the Cubans issued the recontracting regulation in order to keep as many as possible of this captive alien labor force on the plantations, knowing full well that very few of the coolies could have saved enough from their meager wages to pay for their passage home" - Hu-DuHart. Two of the documents present are from the Sagua la Grande municipality, and resign two men, a forty-three year-old from Fukien (Fujian) given the name Antonio and a twenty-five year-old from Canton (Guangzhou) given the name Amalio, for a period of one year. Both documents are signed by the two men, one rather cru … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alcott, Louisa May
Robert Brothers, Boston, 1869. First edition of Little Women, Part the Second in the original green cloth, frontispiece with tissue guard, illustrated. With 8 pages of advertisement at rear and no notice for "Little Women, Part First" on page iv. In very good condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Laid in is a period colored postcard of the home of Louisa May Alcott in Concord, Massachusetts where she wrote the present volume. Louisa May Alcott was born in Germanstown, Pennsylvania and spent most of her life in Massachusetts. Educated by her father, the philosopher and writer, Amos Bronson Alcott, she began writing to help support her family. She too, like her heroine Jo, wrote stories for pulp magazines under a male pseudonym. The illustrations were by her sister May, upon whom the character of Amy was based. In 1865, while serving as editor of Merry Museum, a Boston children's magazine, Alcott received encouragement to write a book for girls. Drawing on memories of childhood, the author portrayed the daily lives of Amy, Jo, Beth and Meg March--portraits of the four Alcott sisters. One of the most popular juvenile books ever published, "Little Women is an outstanding achievement of 19th-century American literature, and the first children's novel written in that country to have become an enduring classic." "It is one of the first fictional texts for children to convey the difficulties and anxieties of girlhood, and. suggests that becoming a 'little woman' is a learned and often fraught process, not an instinctual or natural condition of female development" (Foster … [Click Below for Full Description]

Regester, Seeley] [Victor, Metta Victoria Fuller] The Author of the Dead Letter
Beadle & Co, New York, 1869. Recently rebound in three quarter leather over marbled boards. Ownership stamp and signature of Samuel Dodge to title page. Internally complete, including the frontis. Gently toned overall, as is common of imprints of this period. Paper repairs to page 110 and the verso of 111. Bound with Sybil Cambell; or The Queen of the Isle at rear. Scarce in trade and at institutions, this is presently the only copy on the market and OCLC reports only 4 copies held at libraries. The second detective novel by Metta Victor (pseudonym Seeley Regester), whose previous work The Dead Letter broke new ground as the first full-length mystery novel written in America. With The Figure Eight, Victor continued expanding the genre she had created -- blending the gothic with qualities from popular Victorian domestic novels. Dissatisfied with the simple, she also began weaving social commentary into her sensational writing, tying the events surrounding the murder of Dr. Meredith and the investigation of his poor nephew Joe to some of the great debates of the moment. "Questions about social climbing, racial passing, and gender roles were pressing matters in the upheaval that followed the Civil War. Victor's novel, which evokes a world of suspicion and deception, shows that these issues of personal identity were understood at the time to be connected to national identity. When Victor has Dr. Meredith bring home a fortune from the California gold rush, she reminds her readers of how recently California had joined the union, and when she has him bring home a bride from Cuba, … [Click Below for Full Description]

*** [English translation available upon request. Contact us for any information!]. [A … [Click Below for Full Description]
