Freshfield, Douglas W.
London: Longmans, Green, and Co, 1869. First edition. 8vo. pp. xv, 509, [2]; chromolithographic frontispiece, 3 folding maps, 4 wood-engraved plates, wood engravings to text; very good and partly unopened in the original cloth, gilt, rubbed. Provenance: Bookplate of William Cecil Slingsby, Alpine Club member, with a loosely inserted 2pp. black-edged A.L.S. from Freshfield to Slingsby dated 9.7.03, and three small photographs of the Caucasus. This book records Freshfield's journey from Bashan (northern Jordan and southern Syria) into the Caucasus, with stays in Tiflis (Tblisi), Pyatigorsk and ascents of peaks there. Freshfield writes in the hope that "the record of our adventures in the mountain fastnesses may prove of sufficient interest to draw the attention of our countrymen to a range surpassing the Alps by two thousand feet in the average height of its peaks, abounding in noble scenery and picturesque inhabitants, and even now within the reach of many 'long-vacation tourists'". This copy belonged to William Cecil Slingsby (1849-1929), the father of Norwegian mountaineering. The book also includes a letter between the two men, in which Freshfield asks for advice on "a first visit to Norway . taking 2 daughters and a nephew who can climb. We shall probably cross to Bergen go N first thro' the fjords how far? & what next. What is the finest possible bit of scenery & where the finest mountains?" [WOMEN] MILL, John Stuart
J.B. Lippincott & Co, 1869. First American Edition. Lengthy essay by the English philosopher and political economist, with ideas developed jointly with his wife, Harriet Taylor Mill, arguing in favor of legal and social equality between the sexes. "...the principle which regulates the existing social relations between the two sexes - the legal subordination of one sex to the other - is wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hinderances to human improvement; and that it ought to be replaced by a principle of perfect equality, admitting no power or privilege on the one side, nor disability on the other" (p.1). This copy owned by prominent Iowa suffragette Pauline Given Swalm (1850-1934). Already a talented editor, she and her husband, Albert W. Swalm, co-owned the Oskaloosa Herald, an influential Republican newspaper. (cf.Annals of Iowa, 1935, pp.557-558). As a newspaper woman and as an orator, Swalm was devoted to the cause of women's suffrage; after hearing her speak, Susan B. Anthony would later say of her: "That is worthy of Elizabeth Cady Stanton." Mill was clearly an influential force in developing her ideaa. This copy, purchased by Swalm in the year of publication, shows extensive use; on the final page of text, she wrote "Reread for the "severalth" time / March 28th, 188, P.G.S.", and the volume bears her brief holograph notations, and numerous passages marked throughout the text. A distinguished copy of this influential argument for woman suffrage. LADD (The Case for Woman Suffrage: A Bibliography), pp.34-35. First Printing. Octavo (19.25cm); dark green pebbled cl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft
Boston and Cambridge: Sever, Francis and Co, 1869 Early printing. Publisher's maroon cloth, decoratively ruled in blind to boards and lettered in gilt to spine, brown coated endpapers, publisher's ad tipped in at title page. A very good copy with fading to extremities and a touch of wear to spine ends, corners lightly rubbed and spine with a slight lean, bookplate to front pastedown, contemporary ownership signature to title page, light scattered foxing throughout. Overall, a lovely copy of a very scarce Frankenstein publication. First published anonymously by 20-year old Mary Shelley in 1818, Frankenstein is recognized as one of the first ever science fiction novels. The story is told through a series of letters from Robert Walton to his sister, beginning in the middle of his voyage to the North Pole, when Walton and his crew happen upon the lone, emaciated Victor Frankenstein in need of shelter. They take the stranger on board, and Walton slowly learns of his tortured past, from a tragic childhood to scientific experiments that eventually resulted in the creation of a monster who threatens his life.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

He gained experience in the new land by boarding with and forming friendships with prominent gentlemen and became a flock owner when he bought 400 lambs a month before his 18th birthday. JONES, Horatio Gates
King & Baird, Printers, 1869. Good. 12/3/2010. First edition. Octavo. 36pp., with a folded facsimile. Printed wrappers, untrimmed. Inscribed by the author to Joseph Sabin, Esq. in neat ink on the half-title page. Chipping to the edges of the wraps, somewhat darkened and separated at the spine, with age-toning to the text pages, else very good. An apt association between Jones, vice president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and author of a monograph on Andrew Bradford, Philadelphia's "second" most famous printer, and Joseph Sabin (1821-81), America's best known bibliophile and father of Americana. Sabin's *Bibliotheca Americana a Dictionary of Books relating to America from its Discovery to the Present Time*, begun in 1868 and completed in 1936, is a comprehensive catalog of "every book in every language which relates to, or has the slightest reference to America.". BLACKMORE, R. D.
Samson Low Son & Marston, 1869. First edition. 8vo. Three volumes. Later polished calf with gilt double rules to the covers and raised bands and brown morocco title labels to the spine. Gilt tooling to the spine compartments. Original cloth covers and spine bound into the rear of each volume. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. In near fine condition, clean and fresh with light wear to two joints. Neat ownership initials to the binder's blank of the first volume. A handsome set. Lorna Doone, the work on which Blackmore's popularity and significant literary standing in the latter half of the nineteenth century entirely rests, had a rather curious publishing history. Having struggled to find a publisher for the work, it was eventually published in an edition of 500 copies of which, in spite of good reviews, only some 300 were sold. A year later, a one volume cheap edition was published, which was great success, and the work has scarcely been out of print since. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Hine, L. A. (Lucius Alonzo), editor and author
1869. Thick 8vo, bound in half leather, very good. A haphazardly bound assemblage of L. A. Hine's works on economics and social and political reform, including a copy of his very rare anti-banking and pro-justice-reform novel, The Money-Changers (1860) of which there are only two copies in OCLC. Hine was a Cincinnati-based lawyer who edited a number of journals. Frank Luther Mott in his history of American magazines noted that all of Hine's journals ended in failure, but are 'not without value.' He was indoctrinated with revolutionary political ideas and could be considered a pre-socialist revolutionary, a firm communitarian and advocate for women's suffrage. This bound volume collects the first four issues of Hine's Quarterly (probably all published), the last issue of which does not have a title page, but its pagination takes up where the third issue ends. The first piece in this volume, 'The National Banks' appears to be advance sheets for publication in the April 1869 of the same 32 pp. article. Toward the end, there are selections from Hine's major work on Political and Social Economy that was first printed in 1851, again in 1856-57, and again in 1861; these are apparently from the last printing, 1861. An interesting and rare assortment of works from an author who was heavily involved in National Reform politics, which offered a broad critique of wealth accumulation, banks, the justice system, voting laws, land acquisition and disposition, and labor reform. Very Good.

Joseph LISTER
1869. [Antiseptic, Medicine, Science, C19th, Septic] ~ PRESENTATION COPY LISTER, Joseph Introductory lecture delivered in the university of edinburgh. November 8, 1869 Edinburgh. Edmondston and Douglas, 1869. 8vo. 22pp. Original wraps, with title to upper wrap. A fine presentation copy, with only slight marking, inscribed 'From the author' to head of title. Joseph Lister (1827-1912), English physician and founder of anti-septic surgery. After eight years as the Professor of Surgery at Glasgow University, Lister left in 1869 to take up the professorship of clinical surgery at Edinburgh. This first lecture outlines his germ theory of putrefaction: 'the germ-theory declares that the putrefaction of organic substances under atmospheric influence is not effected, as used to be supposed, by the oxygen of the air, but by living organisms developed from germs floating in the atmosphere as constituents of its dust'. Significant in itself as scientific theory, for Lister it was of particular significance given that his antiseptic system of surgical treatment aimed to avoid putrefaction by guarding against germs. As this copy is of the same provenance as similar offprints and pamphlets presented to Dr Lonsdale of Cumberland Infirmary, it is likely that he was the recipient of this presentation copy. ~ About Antiquates We're based in the heart of the Dorset countryside, with an antiquarian bookshop in Wareham, housed within a beautiful Grade II Listed Georgian Building, we also travel far and wide to buy, sell and advise on rare books. Charles Darwin
London: John Murray, 1869. This is an auction for Charles Darwin's Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection. Fifth edition 1869. At this point, there had only ever been 10,000 copies ever printed of this work. Darwin was still developing his ideas and the fifth edition is the first which uses the term: "Survival of the fittest." Only 2,000 copies of the fifth edition were printed. The book is in near very good condition. There is some slight softening at the top and bottom of the spine which has darkened. A tiny scuff half way along the bottom of the front board. Internally, there is mild foxing of the front and back blanks and the pre-title page and some foxing of the page edges. There is one page (see image 12) which has resulted in a small hole with no loss. The pull out is in good order. This is a nice copy.

Including novels seen as among the finest of the Nineteenth Century, such as Sartor Restartus, and his authoritative history of the French Revolution, the collection is one of diversity and breadth. Including a seven volume (bound into a set of four) of his controversial biography of Frederick The Great, in which Carlyle makes the case for the proto-fascist ideal of the 'Heroic Leader' forging the state and bringing order to chaos, as well as his novel Sartor Resartus, in which the author parodies Hegelian philosophy and German Idealism, the works here offer an accurate summary of Carlyle's controversial, bellicose viewpoi … [Click Below for Full Description]
