Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
[London]: [1869]. Rare. This is a single leaf, with the poem dated "D.G.R. 1859" below the text. The sonnet was printed as part of the proof process for Rossetti's Poems, published in April 1870. Rossetti decided not to include the poem after all because of its erotic nature and reference to prostitution. Thus the poem was written in 1859 but not published until 1904, many years after Rossetti's death. William Michael Rossetti, in his Bibliography of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1904) considers this as a separate item of importance. There are only four copies in Worldcat (Lilly, Princeton, Texas, and Huntington). Two tiny chips on right side of page else in very good condition. Although there is no evidence with this item of its provenance, it is supposedly from the collection of William E. Fredeman, the Pre-Raphaelite bibliographer and collector. PRERAPH/120114. Very Good.

1869. Carlyle, Thomas. Thomas Carlyle's Collected Works: Library Edition, in Thirty Volumes; also Translations from the German, in Three Volumes; and also A General Index. London: Chapman and Hall, 1869-1872. This was the most luxurious collection of Carlyle's works published in his lifetime. And this is a very good to near-fine set with no condition problems but for minor rubbing and a little scuffing to the leather. 34 volumes in matching fine bindings; half calf with marbled boards, spines with five raised bands red leather "Carlyle's Works" labels, brown leather volume title labels, the four other panels decorated in gilt. First edition of great rarity (impossible the find). Nice overall condition, work with clean and healthy book block; scratches and the tape reinforcements on the covers. Based for obvious reasons on a geocentric view of the world, the Church armed with the Holy Office chased tirelessly scientists denouncing the universe of Aristotle. Giordano Bruno and many other anonymous heretics were burnt on behalf of the defence of arbitrary order. Galileo, who knew how to handle and protect himself from the obscurantism of the Roman Curia, only had real problems after 70. The trial which followed experienced multiple comments with multiple intentions. Our work presented here educated the mass with ‘contemporary documents' attaches to sift through what was said previously. To support and remarkable as that may be, the outcome (reworking of a series of articles in the journal Catholic of Louvain) remains no less an attempt of exemption for the Catholic Church, in order to mitigate the brutality with which Rome silenced the great scholar.EUR 3.980,00 Versandkostenfrei innerhalb Deutschlands Aufgenommen mit whBOOK Sicheres Bestellen - Order-Control geprüft! Grant, Ulysses S
1869. Autograph boldly signed "U.S. Grant Maj. Gen, U.S.A." on a card. Double matted and framed with a photograph of Grant. The entire piece measures 16.5 inches by 10.5 inches. In near fine condition. Ulysses S. Grant served as president of the United States from March 4, 1869 to March 4, 1877. On January 29, 1877, (five days before he left office), Grant gave an address to the Senate of the United States regarding a controversial dispute that had arisen over the results of the upcoming presidential election. In the address, Grant argued that the people must put their trust in Congress, stating: "In all periods of history controversies have arisen as to the succession or choice of the chiefs of states, and no party or citizens loving their country and its free institutions can sacrifice too much of mere feeling in preserving through the upright course of law their country from the smallest danger to its peace on such an occasion; and it can not be impressed too firmly in the hearts of all the people that true liberty and real progress can exist only through a cheerful adherence to constitutional law." 1869. This listing is for a vintage The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas. This is a 2 Volumes Complete In One edition by T.B. Peterson & Brothers and is dated 1869. I am not a book dealer/collector and know very little about the book so if you have any questions about the book, please feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer all questions. I have priced the book at the low end of a valuation from someone who deals in antiquarian books but will consider offers. I have taken pictures as well as I could to help you determine the condition. The pages do look a bit more yellowed in person than they do in the pictures. The binding seems tight and the pages are in good condition and don't feel brittle to me. I don't see any pages with tears. There is a pencil marking on the inside of the front cover that you can see in the pictures. There is rubbing and wear to the edges of the cover. Specific pictures can be sent upon request. Free insured Priority Mail shipping within the continental United States. Returns only accepted when item is significantly not as described. Again, please feel free to email any questions and thanks for looking!

To support and remarkable as that may be, the outcome (reworking of a series of articles in the journal Catholic of Louvain) remains no less an attempt of exemption for the Catholic Church, in order to mitigate the brutality with which Rome silenced the great scholar. MARKHAM Clements Robert
1869. First edition. Five folding maps. 8vo. Original cloth, recased, very slight marginal browning. xii, 484pp. ad. leaf 50pp. publisher's catalogue dated December, 1868. Macmillan and Co., Markham entered the Civil Service in 1853, transferring in 1854 to the Board of control of the East India Company. In his youth he had served at sea on the Pacific Station, mainly in South America and had picked up a working knowledge of Spanish. He had returned to Peru in 1852 and spent a year wandering amongst the Inca ruins consolidating his fascination with the history and politics of the area. It was unsurprising therefore that he was chosen in 1860 to travel to the Eastern Andes for the collection of cinchona trees and seeds, and to work on their acclimatisation in India. This was to lead to a considerable cheapening of supplies of quinine. On his return he was made Geographer to the India Office and it was as such that he accompanied Napier's expedition. He was present at the fall of Magdala and it was he who discovered Theodore's corpse. Following his retirement in 1877 he redoubled ? his geographical and historical activities, travelling widely and writing incessantly.? [DNB] and was a great promoter of Antarctic exploration. He was Secretary to the RGS from 1863-1888, and of the Hakluyt Society, 1858-1887. He was for many years quite justly considered to be Britain's leading geographer. Prideaux was a member of Rassam's mission to Theodore and spent two years in chains at Magdala. He was later acting Agent and Consul-General at Zanzibar, 1873-5, and the Persian Gulf, 1876-7. It was greatly appreciated by Marx and in 1869 he began leaning Russian in order to be able to read this work. Marx came to consider Russia as the country in which the outbreak of the Revolution was most likely and in his research for the successive volumes of 'Das Kapital' he primarily used the present work along with works of A. Hoshelev.Flerovsky painted a vivid picture of the growing destitution of the peasantry following the introduction of capitalist social relations in agriculture. "the conclusion he drew was that everything possible should be done to prevent capitalism from making further headway and to utilize, instead, the potentialities of the peasant commune." (Walicki, A History of Russian Thought)."I have read the first 150 pages of Flerovsky's book (they are taken up by Siberia, North Russia and Astrakhan). This is the first work to tell the truth about Russian economic conditions. The man is a determined enemy of what he calls 'Russian optimism.' Just ask! 1869 1ed 1st printing Mark Twain Innocents Abroad Travel Guide Holy Land "One must travel, to learn." - Mark Twain, The Innocents Abroad This famous Mark Twain novel, "The Innocents Abroad", was an important novel in the history of 'subscription only' books. This book was huge - comparatively speaking - to the size of other books. When first printed, it resembled the size of a desk dictionary and gave the buyer a sense of 'more for your money' because of its girth. It is considered Twain's first real success and is described as a travel (or anti-travel, perhaps) book and is one of the best-selling travel books of all time. (Melton). Four octavo issues (25cm); original printed wrappers; [ii],389-516,[12]; [ii],[517]-644,[12]; [iv],[645]-768,[24]; [129]-256,[10]pp. Gentle sunning to spines, wrappers edgeworn and slightly dusty, with occasional faint stains, short tears, and creases to same; Nov. and Dec. 1869 issues with shallow loss to base of spines, and a few short splits to joints; Oct.1869 issue showing 1" loss to spine ends, with a long split along rear joint; contents showing mild thumb-soil to margins, else fresh and relatively free of foxing; Very Good to Very Good+. Ground-breaking work of speculative fiction by the Massachusetts author and Unitarian minister. "The Brick Moon" was published serially in three parts (Oct-Dec, 1869), with the conclusion,"Life in the Brick Moon," appearing 2 months later. The story is narrated through a series of journal entries by a scientist, and is the first known work describing an artificial satellite. It describes the construction and launch into orbit of a sphere some 200 feet in diameter, composed of bricks. While the device was intended as a navigational aid, it is accidentally launched with people aboard; they survive, and so, the story also provides the first fictional description of a space station. An incredibly imaginative work, scarce in the original parts, and pre-dating its first book appearance (The Brick Moon and Other Stories) by 30 years. Blelier (1948 ed), p.138. First edition. 8vo. pp. xv, 509, [2]; chromolithographic frontispiece, 3 folding maps, 4 wood-engraved plates, wood engravings to text; very good and partly unopened in the original cloth, gilt, rubbed. Provenance: Bookplate of William Cecil Slingsby, Alpine Club member, with a loosely inserted 2pp. black-edged A.L.S. from Freshfield to Slingsby dated 9.7.03, and three small photographs of the Caucasus. This book records Freshfield's journey from Bashan (northern Jordan and southern Syria) into the Caucasus, with stays in Tiflis (Tblisi), Pyatigorsk and ascents of peaks there. Freshfield writes in the hope that "the record of our adventures in the mountain fastnesses may prove of sufficient interest to draw the attention of our countrymen to a range surpassing the Alps by two thousand feet in the average height of its peaks, abounding in noble scenery and picturesque inhabitants, and even now within the reach of many 'long-vacation tourists'". This copy belonged to William Cecil Slingsby (1849-1929), the father of Norwegian mountaineering. The book also includes a letter between the two men, in which Freshfield asks for advice on "a first visit to Norway . taking 2 daughters and a nephew who can climb. We shall probably cross to Bergen go N first thro' the fjords how far? & what next. What is the finest possible bit of scenery & where the finest mountains?" [WOMEN] MILL, John Stuart
J.B. Lippincott & Co, 1869. First American Edition. Lengthy essay by the English philosopher and political economist, with ideas developed jointly with his wife, Harriet Taylor Mill, arguing in favor of legal and social equality between the sexes. "...the principle which regulates the existing social relations between the two sexes - the legal subordination of one sex to the other - is wrong in itself, and now one of the chief hinderances to human improvement; and that it ought to be replaced by a principle of perfect equality, admitting no power or privilege on the one side, nor disability on the other" (p.1). This copy owned by prominent Iowa suffragette Pauline Given Swalm (1850-1934). Already a talented editor, she and her husband, Albert W. Swalm, co-owned the Oskaloosa Herald, an influential Republican newspaper. (cf.Annals of Iowa, 1935, pp.557-558). As a newspaper woman and as an orator, Swalm was devoted to the cause of women's suffrage; after hearing her speak, Susan B. Anthony would later say of her: "That is worthy of Elizabeth Cady Stanton." Mill was clearly an influential force in developing her ideaa. This copy, purchased by Swalm in the year of publication, shows extensive use; on the final page of text, she wrote "Reread for the "severalth" time / March 28th, 188, P.G.S.", and the volume bears her brief holograph notations, and numerous passages marked throughout the text. A distinguished copy of this influential argument for woman suffrage. LADD (The Case for Woman Suffrage: A Bibliography), pp.34-35. First Printing. Octavo (19.25cm); dark green pebbled cl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shelley, Mary Wollstonecraft
Boston and Cambridge: Sever, Francis and Co, 1869 Early printing. Publisher's maroon cloth, decoratively ruled in blind to boards and lettered in gilt to spine, brown coated endpapers, publisher's ad tipped in at title page. A very good copy with fading to extremities and a touch of wear to spine ends, corners lightly rubbed and spine with a slight lean, bookplate to front pastedown, contemporary ownership signature to title page, light scattered foxing throughout. Overall, a lovely copy of a very scarce Frankenstein publication. First published anonymously by 20-year old Mary Shelley in 1818, Frankenstein is recognized as one of the first ever science fiction novels. The story is told through a series of letters from Robert Walton to his sister, beginning in the middle of his voyage to the North Pole, when Walton and his crew happen upon the lone, emaciated Victor Frankenstein in need of shelter. They take the stranger on board, and Walton slowly learns of his tortured past, from a tragic childhood to scientific experiments that eventually resulted in the creation of a monster who threatens his life.. Hard Cover. Very Good.
