GIDE, André (1869-1951)
Superb portrait by Philippe Halsman, gelatin silver print, 6 x 4 1/2 inches on 9 3/8 x 7 inch mount, signed "Halsman Paris" on the mount beneath the image and with his stamp on verso of the mount. Item #401085 A fine presentation inscription by André Gide (1869-1951): "pour Waldo Frank en affectieuse souvenir André Gide." Waldo Frank (1889-1967) -- American novelist, critic and political activist -- wrote extensively for 'The New Yorker' and 'The New Republic' in the 1920s. In his memoirs, Frank wrote: "My first personal encounter with Gide was a parable. Gide invited me to lunch and was to pick me up at noon at the offices of NRF... Gide rushed in, a little late... 'Come,' he grasped my arm, not my hand. 'there's a big fire... the magasins du Printemps are on fire. I have a police pass.' He pushed me into the waiting taxi, 'Do you like fires? I never miss a fire.'..." Of Gide's work, Frank wrote: "Gide's general theme is the disintegration of the self, as the self has been regarded by the centuries of the Judeo-Christian culture. It is still believed in, still defended. But the revealment that this self is doomed and no new form of the self yet emerged from our cultural chaos gave Gide timelessness and power" (Frank, Memoirs, University of Massachusetts Press, 1973, pp.117-118). Philippe Halsman opened his Montparnasse studio in 1934 and photographed many well-known artists and writers. Gide was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947. Anglo-American auction results record only one inscribed photograph by Gide.

"This first systematic synthesis of French civil law abandoned the structure of the Cide civil. It introduced, among others, German legal notions such as rules of evidence as well as theories of joint property and vindication to French law" (Wikipedia). Die erste systematische, wissenschaftliche Darstellung des Code Civil wurde also nicht von einem französischen Juristen entworfen. MOUCHOT, Augustin.
Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1869. First edition. A fine copy, in original wrappers, of the first book explicitly devoted to solar energy, whose publication coincided with the unveiling of Mouchot's largest solar steam engine, the so-called 'Sun Engine', in 1869, which caused a revolution in the development of solar thermal power. Auguste Mouchot was a French mathematics teacher, who in the 1860's became famous as the designer (and patent-taker) of the first machine that generated electricity with solar thermal energy electricity by the exposure of the sun. Mouchot began his work with solar energy in 1860 after expressing grave concerns about his country's dependence on coal. His work on solar energy and on the development of his sun machine forms the basis for the later developments on solar energy. "The work of Adams, Ericsson, and Shuman had been directly influenced by the solar conceptions of Augustin Mouchot, a man who arrived on the scene in nineteenth century France at precisely that moment when his ideas were likely to attract the most attention. It was a time when French industrial might was at a peak and her leaders open to new ideas, none more so than her emperor. In 1867, to commemorate the explosion of technology that had accompanied the industrial and artistic carnival over which he had presided for 15 years, France's Napoleon III decided to invite the whole world to an international exposition that he would host in Paris." (Kryza, The Power of Light, p. 147). "His initial experiments involved a glass-enclosed, water-filled iron cauldron, in which sunlight passed … [Click Below for Full Description]

Talfor, Robert B.
Greenpoint, NY, 1869. Scarce large albumen prints of the beginning of the construction of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, the most daring engineering feat of its time. The images are held by the Museum of the City of New York, but not by the Brooklyn Museum or Brooklyn Public Library. Showing construction of the bridge, an object of fascination for the public, although newspaper editorials scoffed at the enormous undertaking. The Talfor view is taken from the Brooklyn side looking toward Manhattan across the East River, with a massive pile of rocks in the forming the base of the pier. In the foreground wooden hoists frame the foundation, and temporary construction shacks surround it. In the middle ground lies the East River, and tall -masted ships can be seen at anchor on the Manhattan side. Robert B. Talfor is known for the very rare 'Photographic Views of Red River Raft' of 1873. The 113 hand colored photographs measuring 9 x 7" document the landscape and the lives of the crews working on this massive project to remove the thousand year old log jam which blocked the Red River in Louisiana. The lot sold for $93,750, in February 2018. During the Civil War Talfor was a topographic engineer who mapped out battlefields. (The maps are listed on OCLC.) After the war he founded a photography studio in Greenpoint (Brooklyn). Curtain's Greenpoint Directory of 1868/9 records him in Brooklyn as follows: Talfor, Robert B. photographs, Washington c Greenpoint Ave, h. Eagle. By the early 1870s Talfor was in Louisiana taking the striking images of the Red River Raft project. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stevens, Henry (Ulysses S. Grant)
D. Appleton & Co, New York, 1869. Presented by the President of the Tehuantepec Railway to President Ulysses S. Grant. Presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title page, "To The President, With the regards, of Simon Stevens Pres. Railway Co New York Nov 25th 69." Octavo, bound in full red Presidential presentation binding, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, elaborate gilt tooling to the front and rear panels, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, lithographic plates, two folded maps. In near fine condition. Provenance: Ulysses S. Grant, by descent to his great-grandson Ulysses S. Grant V. Exceptionally rare, this is the first example we have seen from Grant's library. After the financial wreckage wrought by the American Civil War, the Mexican government retracted prior concessions for the isthmian routes at Tehuantepec in southeastern Mexico, originally intended to open the California gold fields to the Gulf states. Nevertheless Simon Stevens, nephew of Republican leader Thaddeus Stevens kept alive the project under the 1869 La Sere Grant. Grant's presidency opened in the midst railroad fever with the joining of the rails of the First Transcontinental Railroad across the United States. Stevens no doubt took advantage of the opportune time to present this book in the hopes that Grant might become further invested in his project and support it for its economic benefits as well as to cement US-Mexican relations. Within a decade, the project had failed. Nevertheless, the book remains a handsome example of 19th century economic incentives in the name of diploma … [Click Below for Full Description]

SMITH, Adam.
Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1869. Oxford: The Clarendon Press,, 1869. Edited by James E. Thorold Rogers. 2 volumes, octavo (223 x 138 mm). Recent green half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, marbled sides. Engraved frontispiece to vol. I. Light toning to initial few leaves, else a fine copy. First Rogers edition, based on the fourth edition published in 1786, of "the first and greatest classic of modern economic thought" (PMM). Rogers argued in his Preface that Smith should be regarded as a mainly inductive, historical thinker, and also set down a new charter for editorial work: "I am, however, disposed to think that the editor of a great work, like that of the "Wealth of Nations," should submit to the functions of a clerk, rather than assume those of a partner, however deferential his language may be towards the author which whom he associates his name'" (cited in Tribe p. 265). The Wealth of Nations was first published in 1776.

Twain, Mark
or The New Pilgrims' Progress; With Two Hundred and Thirty-Four Illustrations. Hartford, Conn.: American Publishing Company [plus six others], 1869. 5 pp undated ads. Original very dark brown cloth stamped in gilt. First Edition of Twain's second book, published in July 1869, preceded only by THE CELEBRATED JUMPING FROG OF CALAVERAS COUNTY. This is Twain's account, filled with shrewd observation and humor, of his steamship journey to Europe and the Levant -- originally in the form of letters to American newspapers. It proved to be Twain's first commercial success; as with most books produced by The American Publishing Company, copies were sold on a subscription basis, i.e. door-to-door by salesmen who had dummy copies showing the various bindings available, rather than through bookshops.~Blanck cites three issues of this book: a first and second that have five differing "points" -- plus a third issue differing from the second only in its ads (Blanck also notes that "intermediate issues occur"). This copy is almost first issue, but slightly "intermediate" -- as four of the five points are first issue, but one (the numbering of pp xvii-xviii) is second issue; the other four points (on pages xviii, 129, [643] and [654]) are first issue. (In our experience, the second issue is the most frequently encountered.)~This copy, still bound in the original cloth, is in very good-plus condition: its exterior is quite nice, with the gilt still quite bright and with just minor rubbing at the extremities. What keeps us from rating the condition any higher is the endpapers -- which though o … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Talfor album … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Felix Dupanloup, Bishop of Orleans] Dupanloup, Monseigneur
Boston: Patrick Donahoe, 1869. First English language edition. Near Fine. Translated by R. M. Phillimore. Octavo. Original mottled purple cloth with gilt to spine and boards stamped in blind. Some gentle shelfwear and bumps. Brown coated endpapers. Contemporary gift inscription by an important Boston activist in pencil to front endpaper: "Fanny M. Stone from Sr. Ann Alexis. Boston 1868." Minor foxing to text block as expected of an American imprint from this period. Overall an exceptional copy of this rare educational tract, which is the only copy on the market, with none in the modern auction record. OCLC records only 8 institutionally held copies. First published in French earlier the same year, the first English language edition of Studious Women introduced a new demographic of readers to a key Liberal Catholic leader's justification for women's education. Dupanloup, an educator of both seminary and lay students, "was a prominent figure in the struggle for educational freedom under the July Monarchy and was an architect of the Falloux Law (1850), which gave legal status to independent secondary schools in France" (Britannica). His efforts extended to women's education. While positioning women's intellectual growth within their roles as Christian wives and mothers, Dupanloup argued that women's education should "transcend the purely household-related matters to include the classics" (Offen). Intellectual growth in this case becomes not only a right, but an obligation women must fulfill. "The rights of women to intellectual cultivation are not only rights, they are dut … [Click Below for Full Description]
