John Wisden
Hi, This lot is an 1869 Wisden , Rebound without the original covers, this is known as the third rarest , or possibly joint second with the 1864 , behind the 1875 and you see many 1870s for each 1869. This rebind is in Very Good condition, the sixth edition of Wisden. The book is in very good condition, the red binding/boards are a bit old and worn but the book inside is in very good condition with very clean pages and minimal spotting, gilt to the spine. A small trimming at an angle to the tp of the book but not close to any text at all, it is a nice tall book. A superb book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Alcott. LITTLE WOMEN very early 1869 ~January 1869 2nd printing 3 mos after 1st Alcott. LITTLE WOMEN very early 1869 ~January 1869 2nd printing 3 mos after 1st Click images to enlarge Description Louisa M Alcott. Little Women. Roberts Brothers. 1869. [First printed October 1868.] Frontispiece with tissue guard. Chocolate endpapers. 6 pp. adverts to rear. The first printing was October 1868. Little Women was originally published in two parts, with Part Second published in April, 1869. The first printing of Part First had no labeling of Part First to the spine: that is the earliest form of binding. [BAL 158]. And, the first printing lacked any statement at page 341 that Little Women (Part Two) is published in a second volume. This copy is one of the earliest printings of the first edition as it lacks Part First to the spine. And, it lacks the statement at p. 341 noting that Little Women (Part Two) is published in a second volume. (Some further evidence is provided by a brief gift inscription to the flyleaf dated January 1969 -- just three months after the first printing and before Little Women (Part Two) was published.) Unlike this volume's 6 pages of adverts to the rear, later volumes printed in 1869 -- with the statement at p. 341 and hence presumably after April 1869 -- had ten pages of adverts to the rear. So this is most likely the earliest form of a second printing. Printed just three months after the first. Cloth with very good color. Minor rubbing to corners, some wrinkling to cloth on front board, minor rubbing to spine and light wear to spine heel. Re-cased, using t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
London: Stangeways and Walden, [1869]. First edition. A unique and most interesting offering - a scarce privately printed book accompanied by only recently published handwritten letters from Rossetti's brother, William Michael (the texts of the letters were published for the first time in "Notes and Queries," Oxford University Press, in January 17, 2011). This is a privately printed edition of a story that had first appeared in The Germ in 1850. Dante Gabriel Rossetti originally intended to include this prose story in his volume of verse, but decided not to following the recovery of his poetical manuscript notebook from the grave of his wife, Elizabeth Siddal. This short story offers a manifesto for the Aesthetic and Decadent movements. It tells the tale of a fictional Renaissance poet who realizes that the artist's only duty is to express what is in his soul. This pamphlet is an offprint from the typesetting found in proofs produced between October 30 and November 25 1869. William Rossetti notes when his brother excluded the story from his published verse he had various copies of Hand and Soul done up in drab wrappers, and that he gave some away but never sold them. Both Thomas Wise and Charles Fairfax Murray state, without citing any authority, that one hundred copies were printed. About thirty can now be accounted for. All but a handful are in institutional collections, most deriving from a cache discovered by William after Dante Gabriel's death in 1882. William Michael Rossetti sent this copy to an admirer of his family, Louisa Douglas Summerbell. She was an artist and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cooper, George
Wm. A. Pond, 1869. Two stanzas and chorus, on one page, in ink. 4to. "Sweet Genevieve" by Stephen Foster's Friend, George Cooper. Fine. One of the most popular songs of the 19th century, with music by Henry Tucker, "Sweet Genevieve" is one of the few surviving song by George Cooper (1838-1927?), whose friendship with Stephen Foster in the last few months of Foster's life has been well documented. The two evidently collaborated on some songs together, which are now lost. It was Cooper who discovered the prostrate body of his stricken friend on the Bowery the day before Foster died, and who informed the family of his death. Autograph lyrics of George Cooper are of the utmost rarity.

Beautifully bound in full polished calf by an unidentified contemporary bindery, spines in six compartments with morocco title labels and elaborate gilt inlays. Milano, Stabilimento Radaelli dei Fratelli Rechiedei, 1869. Esemplare di dedica In 8vo piccolo (mm. 175x112). Pp. 123, [1]. Gary, Clemmitt & Jones, Printers, Richmond, VA, 1869. FIRST EDITION. 117 pp. Softcover in original wraps. Original string-tied binding. Signatures have essentially all loosened from the original string, but all pages and text are here. Also included, and what really sets this copy apart, is the large foldout MAP in the front, bound behind the front wrap. Foxing throughout and some staining/soiling as well. The condition is not the greatest, but it is complete and these are incredibly SCARCE, rarely coming to market, and none are or have been available that I can find with the map. This book gives a complete listing of The Confederate Dead buried in Hollywood up until 1869. The more prominent names such as Pickett and Davis were not interred until years later after their deaths. In spite of the condition, this one being complete makes it an increidbly desirable copy of this SCARCE and important work. Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

WYLD, James
London: James Wyld, Novr. 12th, 1869.. Map dimensions 14.5 x 53 cm, overall 21 x 60.5 cm. Folding map of the canal showing the full extent from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea with inset charts of Ismaïlia, Suez Bay and Port Saïd and another of the Europe, Asia and Africa with British dominions coloured in pink, running along the lower margin of the map is a cross section of the canal with an altitude scale to the left edge, dissected into six sections and mounted on linen, folds between original green cloth boards, publisher's printed label to the upper cover and their advertisement to the folded end section of the map. Some light rubbing and fading to the covers, very good overall. An uncommon map published just five days before the official inauguration of the canal. OCLC records just two copies, in the British Library and the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies. The canal had taken ten years to build, partly through coerced local labour, and encountered numerous difficulties along the way. It opened under French control, but within a few years financial problems forced Isma'il Pasha (Khedive of Egypt) to sell his large minority stake in the canal to the British government. Within fifteen years the canal had been declared a neutral zone under the protectorate of the British having revolutionised world trade through its slashing of sailing times between Europe and Asia and Australasia.

saying that it is "with mixed feelings of gratitude, admiration and esteem that I have asked you to visit me in open Durbar today to afford me an opportunity of thus publicly offering my most grateful thanks. It was no further back than 1869 where thro' the gracious consideration of the then Viceroy now Lord Lawrence communicated to me by Col. Showers the Resident and Genl. Chamberlain commanding the District, I first had the good fortune to obtain the professional advice of so eminent a physician as yourself at a time when my life was dispaired of. No sooner had you taken my care in hand than in a few days you had my dangerous enemy under control, by your great skill, firmness, and decision you shortly restored me to perfect health. Not only I myself but several of my state officers and a large number of my subjects have participated into yr kind attention, your admirable skill, and your natural benevolence. To no-one was your aid ever refused no matter of what colour, creed or class in the various walks of life. Whenever there has been cholera, small pox or dangerous disease you were in the midst of it, doing good. By this means yr name is well known in the Gwalior circle as in many other places .... even the deadly poison of the Cobra ... not beyond the range of your praiseworthy science as there are several of my own and the subjects under the Crown alive to testify ..." he continues at length expressing his gratitude saying that he will "now allude to and express publicly the circumstances to which I owe yr presence at Gwalior in this occasion as my guest, me … [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Verrier, Urbain Jean Joseph, Mathematiker und Astronom (1811-1877)
O. O, 21. V, 1869. ? S. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. Registraturetikett, hs. Numerierung "120" und mit dem verschlungenen Monogrammstempel "LS". - Selten.

[Texas]. [Reconstruction]
Marlin, Tx.; Austin, 1869. Very good.. Six printed and manuscript documents. Old folds, light wear and tanning. A small group of documents relating to the fraught election of 1869 in Texas, in which the state voted on approval of a new state constitution which, among other things, incorporated the terms of readmission to the Union under Reconstruction and decided on a new governor. "Texans began preparing for an election in the spring of 1869, though the election was not held until the following December. The two Republican factions ran opposing tickets. The radicals selected the man who had led them in the convention, Edmund J. Davis, and the moderates chose A. J. Hamilton. Hamilton actively pursued support among the former Democratic leadership in the subsequent campaign.... On January 11, 1870, General Reynolds declared that the new constitution had been ratified and that Edmund J. Davis had received an 800-vote majority" - Texas State Historical Association Online. Davis won despite attempts at voter intimidation and violence by supporters of the antebellum Democratic party. The most interesting document here is a copy of a letter from one of the candidates in Falls County, an A.M. Attwood, that describes the scenes on voting day in this rural area near Waco. It reads, in part: "The Davis ticket was beat here by 230 votes, we made a very good run the first day up to noon, when Shields, Evans, and all the forces they could raise went to work to stop the Col[ore]d voters from voting the Davis ticket, and our military not interfering, let them control the remain … [Click Below for Full Description]
