CARLYLE, Thomas
London: Chapman and Hall, 1869. The Many Writings of A Many-Sided Genius CARLYLE, Thomas. Thomas Carlyle's Collected Works. [With] Translations From the German by Thomas Carlyle. Uniform with His Collected Works. London: Chapman and Hall, 1869-1874. Library Edition. Thirty-four octavo volumes (8 1/8 x 5 1/4 in; 207 x 133 mm). Engraved frontispieces and plates. Uniformly bound by Morrell ca. 1930 in three-quarter crushed brown levant morocco over brown cloth ruled in gilt. Spines with five raised bands, decoratively gilt lettered and tooled in compartments. Two volumes professionally repaired at top of spines. A near fine set. The Library edition, originally issued in 30 volumes 1869-71, with three additional volumes (translations from the German) added in 1871 and also a thirty-fourth volume as General Index . The most lavish edition published within Carlyle's lifetime, the Library Edition sold for 6 to 9 shillings per volume (or £15 the set). "In literature [Carlyle] was the pioneer who explored and made known the work of modern Germany. His literary judgments were penetrating, and (when he had a congenial subject) just; and on men like Voltaire, Burns, and Johnson he gave verdicts that approached finality. At a historian he is in the highest rank. Bating certain unimportant errors of detail, he illumined the past with astonishing insight and made his personages actual and his scenes dramatic. His style is an extraordinary farrago, leaping not flowing, coining strange words and performing extravagant evolutions; yet cumulatively it impresses as a great style, suffused with … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marbled endpapers. Stricking fore-edge painting by Martin Frost depicting Buckingham Palace. The painting can be seen only when the leaves of the book are fanned. Tipped-in partly printed and handwritten note at rear indicates: Hidden under the gilt edge of this book you can find a fore-edge painting by Martin Frost (printed): Enoch Arden 1869, Buckingham House, followed by Martin Frost's signature, and the year MCMXCVII (1997) (handwritten). Fore-edge painter Martin Frost has been working from studios in West Sussex, England for over 40 years. He has painted the edges of well over 3500 books including examples of the scarce all-edge, split and two-way doubles and now binds many of his books too. He has written a workshop manual, published articles and lectured to many major organizations interested in the art and craft of the Book. Originally published in 1864, this work is a reprint of the first edition, without any change in the text. "Enoch Arden"'s story was provided to Lord Alfred Tennyson by Thomas Woolner, an English sculptor and poet who was one of the founding members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The poem lent its name to a principle in law that after being missing a certain number of years (typically seven), a person could be declared dead for purposes of remarriage and inheritance. Some rubbing along joints, and minor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Full condition described in the condition paragraph in the listing below. The Complete Works of ALFRED LORD TENNYSON! Complete in 6 volumes. Printed in 1869. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of Tennyson's Works. This is the first collected edition to contain all of Tennyson's major works, especially Idylls of the King, expanded in 1869 to include The Holy Grail and Other Poems. Tennyson was still alive and continued to publish shorter poems. This is the First Collected Edition of all of his major works, and printed during his lifetime. Printed in 1869. This set is over 140 years old! Tennyson was the Poet Laureate of Great Britain and Ireland during much of Queen Victoria's reign, and still remains to this day one of the most popular British poets. "More than any other Victorian writer, Tennyson has seemed the embodiment of his age, both to his contemporaries and to modern readers. In his own day he was said to be--with Queen Victoria and Gladstone--one of the three most famous living persons, a reputation no other poet writing in English has ever had. As official poetic spokesman for the reign of Victoria, he felt called upon to celebrate a quickly changing industrial and mercantile world with which he felt little in common, for his deepest sympathies were called forth by an unaltered rural England; the conflict between what he thought of as his duty to society and his allegiance to the eternal beauty of nature seems peculiarly Victorian." Robert Santon, Ed.
Leypoldt & Holt. Hardcover. The uncommon 1869 1st edition of this charming guidebook intended to record the "mental" characteristics of friends thru a series of uniform questions designed to pinpoint their tastes, attitudes and orientations. 34 separate 2-page spreads (versos and rectos) of indentical printed questions. What's so wonderful in this case though is that 20 of the 34 questionaires have been filled in (earnestly and thoroughly), between 1869 and 1871, rendering this an especially meaningful piece of Americana. Solid and VG+ in its bevelled, dark-green boards, with bright gilt-titling to the front panel and blindstamped titling at the rear. Neat 1907 pencil inscription to the front free endpaper, very light creasing along the rear pastedown and endsheet. Front inner hinge a bit tender but still perfectly sturdy. Octavo, also includes original pasted-in pencil caricature of one of the subjects of the questionaire. Very Good +. [Attributes: First Edition]

For Your Consideration Rare Personal Diary of Famous Artist CASSIUS MARCELLUS COOLIDGE From the Year 1869 CASSIUS MARCELLUS COOLIDGE (1844-1934) aka 'Cash' or 'Kash-Del' is most widely known for his iconic series of oil paintings depicting scenes of 'Dogs Playing Poker'. He is also credited as the inventor of 'comic foregrounds'; most often seen at fairs or carnivals, which implement a printed / painted board with one or more holes cut out of the surface for people to stick their face through in order to create a humorous effect. Often hailed as the father of Kitsch art, Coolidge's work is infamous and is considered to be some of the most widely reproduced in the world, leaving a permanent stamp on the face of modern pop culture forevermore. Media and advertising interest in Coolidge's 'Dogs Playing Poker' has been limitless over the years, including parodies seen on numerous episodes of The Simpsons, ESPN, Scooby Doo, Cheers, Roseann, Parks and Recreation, and Jim Henson's 'Dog City', just to name a few. Various authors
Washington, DC, 1869. Unbound. Very good. This lot consists of one approved prize money claim and two letters regarding disallowed prize money claims. All three documents are in nice shape. The approved claim has some minor edgewear. Naval records identify John C. Hamlin as an Acting Master as a mate and then Acting Master on several vessels. His claims relate to his service aboard the U.S.S. Huntsville and the U.S.S. Pursuit. The approved prize money award is for the U.S.S. Huntsville's capture of the Confederate Steamer Adela which was carrying a cargo of cotton, rosin, and other commodities, probably from Mobile, Alabama. The partially printed award document reads: "To John C. Hamlin . . . for the sum due him for his share of Prize Money accruing from the capture of the Adela 192.45 . . . "Prize Money." The other two letters related to Hamlin's prize money claims for being on the crew of the U.S.S. Pursuit during the capture of the Steamer Florida in St. Joseph's Bay near Pensacola and the Schooner Andromeda off the Cuban coast. The first of these was send from the Treasury Department to Hamlin's attorneys not only denying his claim but reporting "that from evidence already on file in this office from several parties, it is evident that he has attempted fraud of the grossest kind [and that] no payments will be made to him . . . until he has satisfied all concerned." The second is a two-page reply to the Treasury Department from Hamlin's lawyers acknowledge that his claim regarding the Florida were false, but express concern regarding the Andromeda: "Finding we … [Click Below for Full Description]

BONDU (Louis)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Various authors
Washington, DC, 1869. Unbound. Very good. This lot consists of one approved prize money claim and two letters regarding disallowed prize money claims. All three documents are in nice shape. The approved claim has some minor edgewear. Naval records identify John C. Hamlin as first a mate and then Acting Master on several vessels. The first of these was send from the Treasury Department to Hamlin's attorneys not only denying his claim but reporting "that from evidence already on file in this office from several parties, it is evident that he has attempted fraud of the grossest kind [and that] no payments will be made to him . . . until he has satisfied all concerned." The second is a two-page reply to the Treasury Department from Hamlin's lawyers acknowledging that his claim regarding the Florida were false, but expressing disagreement about the Andr … [Click Below for Full Description]

On good thick white watercolor board. With a image size of 14 x 8 3/4 inches. Sir David Murray RA (born Glasgow, Scotland, 29 January 1849, died Marylebone, England, 14 November 1933) was a well known Scottish landscape painter. He was the son of a shoemaker, James Murray. He worked for eleven years for two mercantile firms, while studying in the evenings at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees, finally devoting himself full time to an artistic career from about 1875. He became an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1881, moving to London in 1882 where he was an immediate success. His 'My Love has gone a-Sailing' exhibited in 1884 was purchased by the Chantrey Trustees for the Tate Gallery. In 1891 Murray was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy, and a full member of the Royal Academy in 1905. About 1886 he broadened his horizons and traveled to the continent, but all of his more characteristic work was done in Scotland or England. Murray was a member of Glasgow Art Club and exhibited in the club's annual exhibitions. He became president of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in succession to Sir James Linton in 1917; the year before he was knighted in 1918. Murray did not marry and during the whole of his life in London he occupied the same bachelor's quarters - the studio of Millais in Langham Chambers, Portland Place. Rossetti, Dante Gabriel
[London]: [1869]. Rare. This is a single leaf, with the poem dated "D.G.R. 1859" below the text. The sonnet was printed as part of the proof process for Rossetti's Poems, published in April 1870. Rossetti decided not to include the poem after all because of its erotic nature and reference to prostitution. Thus the poem was written in 1859 but not published until 1904, many years after Rossetti's death. William Michael Rossetti, in his Bibliography of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1904) considers this as a separate item of importance. There are only four copies in Worldcat (Lilly, Princeton, Texas, and Huntington). Two tiny chips on right side of page else in very good condition. Although there is no evidence with this item of its provenance, it is supposedly from the collection of William E. Fredeman, the Pre-Raphaelite bibliographer and collector. PRERAPH/120114. Very Good.
