        THE HEBREW BIBLE

New York; J. Wiley, 1869. Original Cloth. 8vo. 1384 pages. 22 cm. First American edition. Singerman 2114. In Hebrew, with English title page, pagination, and section headings in English. 'Revised and carefully examined by Myer Levi Letteris. ' The Letteris Bible was frequently reissued by both Jewish and Christian publishers; it was published in a Yiddish version in 1912; the first edition was published in Vienna in 1852, based on the 1705 Bible of van der Hooght?. It is probably the most widely reproduced text of the Hebrew Bible in history, with many dozens of authorised reprints and many more pirated and unacknowledged ones. Compiled by Meir Halevi Letteris (1800? ?1871) , an influential ?Hebrew poet; editor and translator of poetry and dramatic works. Me?ir (Max) ha - Levi Letteris was born in Zólkiew, eastern Galicia, into a family of Hebrew publishers ? When Letteris was 11 years old, he met Nahman Krochmal?a meeting that turned out to be significant. Krochmal became Letteris?s rabbi, mentor, and close friend, and when Krochmal?s Moreh nevukhe ha - zeman (Guide of the Perplexed of Our Time) was published (posthumously) , Letteris wrote his biography (1851) . Letteris?s translation from German into Hebrew of a speech by David Friedländer, and the production of a new edition of the publication Ha - Me?asef, brought him close to the world of maskilim in Germany, and the appearance of his own poetry collection, Divre shir (Collection of Poems) in 1822 established his reputation as a poet. In 1823, Letteris published the anthology Ha - Tsefirah, to which some of the leading maskilim of his generation contributed. In 1846, Letteris published his article 'Toldot ha - filosof Barukh Spinozah zikhrono li - verakhah' (Biography of the Philosopher Barukh Spinoza of Blessed Memory) . Unaware of the Jewish community?s sensitivity about Spinoza, Letteris was dragged, at great personal cost, into a tumultuous debate that caused his friends, even those who were more moderate maskilim, to draw away from him?. Only after his death in 1871 did critics judge him more positively, at which point even long - standing opponents such as Perets Smolenskin acknowledged his talent. Through his original and translated poetry, Letteris paved the way for romantic poetry in Hebrew literature. His collections of Hebrew verse (which include original poems as well as translations) are Divre shir, Ayelet ha - sha? Ar (Morning Star; 1824) , ?Afrot zahav (Gold Ore; 1852) , and Tofes kinor ve - ugav (One Who Plays the Harp and Pipe; 1860) . Letteris wrote poems in German as well, and his publication of Sagen aus dem Orient (Legends of the Orient; 1847) earned him a gold medal from Emperor Franz Joseph. ? He translated many European literary classics, lyrical poems, and plays, including works by Virgil, Lucian, Racine, Byron, Goethe, Schiller, and the Austrian Jewish poet Ludwig August Frankl. Additionally, he translated (from German) the satire Alexander the False Prophet by the Greek satirist Lucian (in Ha - Tsefirah; 1823) , thus contributing to the infusion of European satire into contemporary Hebrew. ? (YIVO Encyclopedia) . Bound in original black tooled calf, gilt lettered spine. Subjects: Bible. Old Testament. Hebrew. Letteris. 1869. OCLC lists 11 copies. Calf rubbed at extremities, otherwise fresh. Good + condition, a nice copy. (RAB - 56 - 2)

Gems of Rocky Mountain Scenery, Containing Views Along and Near the Union Pacific Railroad

Published by the Author, New York 1869 - (13 x 10 1/4 inches). 20 tinted lithographed plates after Mathews. Publisher's purple cloth, covers decoratively blocked in blind, upper cover with a central stamp in gilt, expertly rebacked to style. A rare work by an important western artist, with among the first illustrations of the Rocky Mountains made available to the public. A pioneering creator of city and country views in the American West, Alfred Mathews' works ranks only behind Bodmer, Catlin, Moran, and Warre as illustrated depictions of the opening of the West. The present work was issued following the success of his famed Pencil Sketches of Colorado (1866) and Pencil Sketches of Montana (1868). Mathews states in his "Introductory" notice: "The Lithographs embodied in this work are selections from a series of sketches made by the artist while sojourning in Colorado, Idaho, Montana and Utah, from the fall of 1865 to the winter of 1868. During this time he made many excursions of more or less duration, from Denver in Colorado, Helena and Virginia City in Montana, and Salt Lake City in Utah . These expeditions were performed, excepting during one summer, entirely alone, and principally with ponies; but on two or three occasions on snow-shoes and in a small boat . The pictures represent actual localities; and as they have been drawn on stone from the sketches by the artist himself, have lost none of their original truthfulness." Organized geographically, the tinted lithographs comprise twelve views in Colorado, two in Idaho Territory, two in Montana, and four in Utah; each view is accompagnied by a descriptive text leaf. The final Appendix leaf includes endorsements by President Grant and others. "Mathew's famous lithographs were among the first true representations of the Rocky Mountains to be made available to the public" (Streeter). Eberstadt 106:207; Graff 2708; Howes M411; Sabin 46823; Streeter sale 2109. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Subjection of Women.

London: Longmans, Green, Reader, and Dyer,, 1869. Octavo (197 × 121mm). Original dark yellow cloth, title to spine gilt, boards blocked in blind, brown coated endpapers, recased. Spine ends and inner hinges very skilfully restored, corners lightly rubbed, covers a little darkened; a clean, crisp copy. First edition, "the last of [Mill's] great political tracts" and his "most unpopular and bitterly contested" work (ODNB). Mill had long been a women's rights advocate, having been influenced by the thinking of his father, the Utilitarian philosopher James Mill, and by his long friendship with, and then marriage to, the philosopher Harriet Taylor Mill (1807?1858), a passionate advocate for equality. Indeed, the freedom of women can be seen as a microcosm of Mill's general philosophy of freedom, in which "the 'greatest good' of the community is inseparable from the liberty of the individual" and the definition of tyranny is expanded to include the domination of minorities by a democratically elected majority (PMM 345). The Subjection of Women was the only one of Mills' works "on which he made a financial loss, even though pirated popular editions soon began to circulate widely in Europe and America. Among campaigners for women's suffrage, however, it rapidly became a sacred text and gave him a position of heroic, almost apostolic, authority within the nascent women's movement" (ODNB).

From Calcutta to London by the Suez Canal.

Calcutta: The "Englishman" Press 12mo (16.2 cm, 6.35"). [6], 272, xxii pp.. 1869 The Maryland-born, Harvard-educated Rev. Dall, who established several schools in Calcutta as part of his work with Hindu reformers, was for 30 years the sole Unitarian missionary to India. This volume focuses primarily on his travels rather than his religious and educational work: it collects the letters he wrote as "Roving Correspondent" to the Englishman. These observant, engagingly written accounts were "fresh from the localities indicated" (p. [v]) — including the Suez Canal, which Dall explored from end to end in 1868 and again in 1869, making this a very early account of that modern marvel, for the canal officially opened on November 17, 1869. => The letters cover politics, culture, commerce, and tips on travelling in "far" places. This is the uncommon first edition; WorldCat and NSTC locate => only five hard copies in U.S. institutions. Publisher's gray-blue paper wrappers; front wrapper with tiny hole, spine creased with one chip, edges and corners rubbed. Pages age-toned, otherwise clean. => A solid, clean copy of a scarce item.

1869 Wisden Cricketers Almanac, Facsimile Wrappers

On offer here is an 1869 Wisden Cricketers Almanac in entirely original condition apart from the facsimile wrappers. 1869 is commonly regarded as the second scarcest Wisden after the 1875 edition. The copy on offer here has been recently fitted with facsimile wrappers which are in excellent, as new condition. The remainder of the book is entirely original. The title page has the odd very minor mark and the contents page has a little, very light foxing as does the last page - at page 120. Apart from this the contents are in absolutely immaculate, clean condition - original, unmarked and clean. A really excellent example of a very scarce year.

La France se preparant a passer ses candidats sous la toise.

[Paris: Le Charivari, 3 May 1869]. Lithograph. Small 4to (image size 8¼" X 10"). Very good. Light, even age toning. This is the second state of Plate 73 in this illustrated newspaper's "Actualites" series, and a strong clean impression. It depicts a statuesque crowned woman, representing France and resembling our Statue of Liberty, standing at right atop a scale with a measuring pole. Her right hand rests across her bosom and her right hand clutches the adjustable height bar near the top of the measuring pole. Behind her and at left stand a crowd of Frenchmen in suits and ties, all staring apprehensively at her. The caption reads, in translation, "France preparing to het her candidates to pass muster under the measure of standards." Immediately below the plate, at lower left, is printed "A. de Vresse, r.Rivoli, 55" while at lower right is printed "Lith. Destouches, r. Paradis Pre 28," and the stone number "16" appears in the base of the scale. A quite nice copy, printed on wove paper. (The rare first state was printed on newsprint stock and bore no caption, and the rare third state bore a different caption than the second state.) This print is displayed in a single cream matte and a ½" black wooden frame, overall dimensions 13" X 16". Very good. Slight bit of dampstaining at upper left and lower right of matte (not affecting print). Verso of frame bears the label of noted New York art gallery E. Weythe Art Books Prints. Daumier produced a vast number of social caricatures, roughly 4000 in number, many done for this famed publication. From the collection of former Illinois Senator ADLAI E. STEVENSON III (b. 1930), son of the Illinois governor of the same name (1900-65) and great-grandson of the U.S. vice president of the same name (1835-1914). DR 3708.

        Hand and Soul

London: Stangeways and Walden, [1869]. Near Fine. First edition. A unique and most interesting offering - a scarce privately printed book accompanied by only recently published handwritten letters from Rossetti's brother, William Michael (the texts of the letters were published for the first time in "Notes and Queries," Oxford University Press, in January 17, 2011) This is a privately-printed edition of a story that had first appeared in The Germ in 1850. Dante Gabriel Rossetti originally intended to include this prose story in his volume of verse, but decided not to following the recovery of his poetical manuscript notebook from the grave of his wife, Elizabeth Siddal. This pamphlet is an offprint from the typesetting found in proofs produced between October 30 and November 25 1869. William Rossetti notes when his brother excluded the story from his published verse he had various copies of Hand and Soul done up in drab wrappers, and that he gave some away but never sold them. Both Thomas Wise and Charles Fairfax Murray state, without citing any authority, that 100 copies were printed. About 30 can now be accounted for. All but a handful are in institutional collections, most deriving from a cache discover by William after Dante Gabriel's death in 1882. This copy was sent by William Michael Rossetti to an admirer of his family, Louisa Douglas Summerbell. She was an artist and illuminator much influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. Rossetti has inscribed the book "To Miss L. Douglas Summerbell with the friendly regards of Wm. Rossetti June 1896." Written above this in William's hand is a six-line explanation of the pamphlet's publishing history. Bound in are five important signed autograph letters, seventeen pages in all, from William Rossetti to Miss Summerbell, written between 1896 and 1906, in which he discusses at length the writings of Dante Gabriel, Christina and himself. In original buff printed wrappers that Summerbell had neatly sewn into limp green cloth along with the letters and laid into a beautiful 19th-century handmade leather case showing some rubbing. On the preliminary leaf of the cloth bound book is a note that it had passed to her friend, Ruth Johnston. From the collection of Gerald N. Wachs and included in an exhibition of his poetry collection at the Grolier Club in 1995. Pamphlet in very good collection bound into near fine cloth book. PRERAPH/071216.

Belleville, Illinois:: "Belleville Democrat" Print.,. 1869. Elephant folio broadside, 19" x 24." Printed with several different styles and sizes of typesettings and fonts, a few blank spaces completed in pencil manuscript. Old folds, light wear. Of the several names listed on this broadside, the names of the more prestigious individuals are printed first and in more prominent sized typesettings. Very Good. This broadside is the plea of prominent Belleville citizens to support the planned railroad projects in their County, scheduled for a vote in the upcoming election. The coal and iron markets were growing rapidly in Illinois, with large beds of coal between Collinsville and Belleville. Without a local railroad, coal was transported by wagon to Illinoistown and then by ferry across the Mississippi River. Since the late 1830's, when the State of Illinois nearly collapsed under the weight of excessively enthusiastic internal improvements, efforts to build the railroad had started and then failed. In the 1850s, several railroads were built but Belleville did not receive a station. With this broadside, the indefatigable Bellevillians try again. Several of the most prominent supporters mentioned in this broadside are Col. James Lowry Donaldson Morrison [1816-1888], Navy midshipman, Belleville lawyer, State Senator and U.S. Congressman. During the Mexican War, he was Lt. Colonel of Bissell's Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, and was honored for his services at Buena Vista. John Breese Hay [1834-1916] was State's Attorney for the 24th Judicial Circuit, Adjutant in the 130th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers during the Civil War, Republican Congressman, mayor of Belleville. J.M. Hay may [or may not] have been John Milton Hay, Lincoln's secretary, author [with Nicolay] of the multi-volume biography of Lincoln, and at the beginning of a distinguished career as diplomat and statesman. Governor Gustavus Koerner [1809-1896], born in Germany, moved to Illinois in 1833 and set up a law practice in Belleville. He held numerous State offices. During the Civil War he was a Colonel on the staffs of Generals Fremont and Halleck. He was a member of the Chicago Convention of 1860 which nominated Lincoln for president. Vital Jarrot [1805-1877] served in the Black Hawk War, was U.S. Indian Agent, part owner of the first railroad in Illinois, and established the first newspaper in East St. Louis. William H. Snyder [1825-1892] was a lawyer, judge, and member of the State Legislature. He served in the Mexican War, Fifth Illinois Volunteers. Not located on OCLC.

Two vertical creases, small chips in edges of wrappers. Stitching loosening. Very good. A scarce pamphlet inducing working men and women to come to California, where jobs are promised to be plentiful and the living good. Two pages of text list scores of occupations, the number of workers desired in each, the pay, and the slots already filled. Other tables give statistics on the cost of living in California. Women are encouraged to come, as are unskilled laborers, and there is information on education resources in the state and the potential for farmers. The California Labor Exchange was established in April 1868 to provide "poor people, residents of the State, and immigrants, with employment." They boast that in their first eight months of operation they found employment for upwards of 12,000 people. The advertisements are for some of the most prominent and influential businesses in California at the time, including the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, Wells Fargo, the ALTA CALIFORNIA NEWSPAPER, and the Bank of California. Scarce; OCLC locates a total of eight copies. COWAN, p.201. SABIN 10003. OCLC 19381623, 228682803.
