Webster, Daniel
Washington DC: Gideon, 1868. First edition, presentation copy to W. E. Robinson from his friend Dan'l Webster. Wraps bound into recent half morocco gilt, with additional signature of Webster appended to front wrap, and with additional note from 1868 on Connecticut Courant letterhead from Robinson to a Mr. Sanborn asking him to send his semi-weekly columns to his Walden address rather than a former one. He also makes mention of Sanborn's latest article and how it will be interesting to a number of readers. This same copy, minus the additional material, was sold at Sotheby's in 1985 for a total of $522 including buyer's commission. The Rhode Island Question centered on Dorr's Rebellion of 1841-42, which was a populist rebellion to change antiquated electoral laws in Rhode Island that dated back to 1663 requiring voters to own land, which in addition to later laws requiring voters to be white and have at least $134 to their name, made for widespread disenfranchisement. Very Good.

Early map of the United States with vivid red index noting Indian Reservations. Grimms' Goblins - circa 1868 edition published by George Vickers. The penny dreadful edition of Vickers' series of Fairy Books for Boys and Girls, bound from the 25 weekly parts and featuring 22 full page colour illustrations by "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne), without the black and white illustrations which featured in the earlier edition and with fewer tales. Printed by Robson and Son. 398 pages, containing 98 tales, not all from the Brothers Grimm. The book is bound in the publisher's blue cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt and blind, the spine has been re-backed at some point onto similarly toned blue cloth, the boards are somewhat bumped, rubbed and faded, more so to the spine, with minor tears to the cloth. The text block has gilt to all edges, it retains the original and rather striking colour title page, with the publishing information cropped at the bottom to fit the format, the pages are slightly toned, there is minor foxing and slight cracking and the endpapers were probably replaced when the spine was re-backed, though the paper used looks to be Victorian and they may be the originals. Arguably even more uncommon than the 1861 original due to the even cheaper production processes used.

Grant, Ulysses S.]

Imprint information of Cadart & Luce taken from copy held by American Antiquarian Society. The copy held by AAS has the imprint information printed below the etching of General Grant; our generously margined copy does not. This broadside was probably printed in 1868. L'Ilustration Nouvelle's etching of General Grant, announced here by Martial, issued in 1868. A[dolphe] Martial [1828-1883] was a French artist and illustrator. [Victoria and Albert Museum: CATALOGUE OF PRINTS; MODERN ETCHINGS. London, 1903, p139.] Pierre-Antoine Berryer [1790-1868], a French lawyer and politician, defended freedom of the press during the reigns of King Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III. The announcement of his death permits the broadside's assertion that the advertised portrait of General Grant is rarer and more desirable than that of Berryer, and is a must for collectors. 1868. There is grandeur in this view of life .... from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved. Here we offer a very early edition of Charles Darwin's classic, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, (complete with tri-fold-out exhibit) published by D. Appleton and Co., New York, in 1868. This is the very rare fourth edition, published before the phrase "survival of the fittest" was added to the text and before the "On" was removed from the title. Book has been reblocked and rebound with matching acid-free patches over hinges at end-paper gutters, remnants of original spine cloth reapplied atop new brown spine cloth, and a new placeholding ribbon. Period inscription over the top of the title page. Very tight and square binding. Pulp is overall a bit stiff but quite durable with very bright and crisp text. Fold-out is in great shape. Measures approximately 5.5 x 8-inches; 440 indexed pages, plus 2 pages of ads. This very rare relic of scientific history will make a beautiful centerpiece to any rare books collection, a canny investment, or a very thoughtful and special gift. ** Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer? HOLLAND, Henry.
HOLLAND, Henry. Recollections of Past Life. London, Spottiswode & Co., 1868. 8vo. Original maroon pebble-grained cloth, spine lettered 1868, front cover with H. H. in gilt; pp. [iv], 194; a near fine copy of a great rarity.Privately printed first edition, presentation copy inscribed, signed and dated April 11, 1868 by Holland to his friend Dr. Henry Bence Jones, physician, chemist and promotor of the Royal Society. These are the vividly written recollections of one of the most relentless and keen British travellers of the 19th century. Sir Henry Holland (1788-1873) was a successful society physician, related to Josiah Wedgwood, the patron of the arts, and to the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell. 'Holland very determinedly carved out for himself exactly the life he wanted. Spare of stature but blessed with exceptionally good health, he was able to indulge his abiding love of travel right up to the time of his death' (ODNB). He began travelling abroad with a trip to Iceland in 1810, which provided data for his doctoral thesis De morbis Islandiae. This was followed, after his graduation by visiting Portugal, Gibraltar, Sardinia, Sicily, the Ionian Isles, and Greece, resulting in his book Travels in the Ionian Isles. The success of his medical practice 'gave him the freedom to pursue his great love of travel. In his lifetime he visited every European capital, made two visits to Iceland, and eight to America, covering more than 26,000 miles of that continent' (ibid.). Apart from Holland's few travel books and contributions to periodicals, this book is the best source about his lif … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philadelphia: Benerman & Wilson, 1868. 1st, and only, edition (Johnson H802). 38, [2 (blank)] pp. Text pages with red-rule border. Mounted 3-leaf albumen photograph as frontispiece. 8vo. 8-3/4" x 7". Original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt stamped title lettering & device to front board & rear board stamped in blind. Bevelled boards. Modest wear & soiling to binding. Crinkled ffep. Frontis tissue-guard excised. Light foxing. A VG - VG+ copy. Item #36914 An interesting, fairly-early manual on the field of photography, as it stands poised to enter its 4th decade. Himes, in 1868, was professor of natural sciences at Dickinson College; he would continue in this academic role well into the 1890s. He manifested an early interest in photography, an interest that would remain life-long. This, Himes' first published book, primarily addresses the silver process of leaf prints [i.e., no camera involved], but also the silverless processes of "Ferricyanide of Potassium (Blue)" and "Bichromate of Potassa (Brown)". At the time, not extensively used as a commercial process, 'leaf prints' would be 'rediscovered' & used effectively in the early 20th C. by such photographers as Man Ray & Christian Schad. A title scarce in the trade, with RBH showing the last copy to auction being 1994.

Cette monographie est basée sur 42 observations anatomo-cliniques, dont six de Charcot. Cotard montre que l'atrophie cérébrale est une lésion non spécifique secondaire à diverses affections cérébrales et estime qu'il est difficile de déterminer l'étiologie : "Cotard felt it was difficult to determine etiology from the type of atrophy and believed that about one-fifth of atrophic cases might be due to birth injury. Cotard also noted that the cranium was smaller on the affected side, that aphasia was relatively uncommon, and that intelligence could be normal" (Ashwal). WHITMAN, Walt.
London: John Camden Hotten, 1868. Octavo. Original blue cloth over bevelled boards by Bone & Son (BAL's variant A), spine lettered in gilt, single rule frame in gilt to front cover, in blind to rear cover, brown coated endpapers. Bookplate of Jabez Thompson to front pastedown. Slight cockling to spine and light rubbing to extremities, yet overall an exceptional copy, internally clean. Engraved portrait frontispiece with facsimile signature, vignette to title page, 8 pp. of adverts bound at front, 24 pp of adverts bound at rear. First English edition, first issue, of Whitman's Leaves of Grass, here named Poems, which "gave Whitman his first British readership" (ODNB). Whitman made several revisions to the poems for this edition, and unusually allowed his work to be edited. However, the editor William Michael Rossetti felt that much of Whitman's corpus was too radical for Victorian sensibilities; around half of the poems were omitted, with Rossetti choosing to "omit entirely every poem which could with any tolerable fairness be deemed offensive to the feelings of morals or propriety in this peculiarly nervous age" (Rossetti's preface). BAL 21401; Myerson C1. [Attributes: First Edition]
