McDONALD, Thomas E.
New Jersey / New York / Michigan / Ohio, 1868. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of 43 letters from 1868 written to and from Thomas E. McDonald to investors, salesmen, and his partner David D. Stelle. Most letters are near fine, some have age-toning on the edges of the letters. An archive of letters between the inventor Thomas E. McDonald, his partner David D. Stelle, and various investors and salesmen for their "Improved Harrowed Cultivator". McDonald and Stelle's "Improved Harrowed Cultivator" was patented to both of them in 1867. It combined the three stages of growing corn: planting seeds, harrowing the stalks, and cultivating the corn. The letters are written in 1868 around the New Jersey and New York area, mostly from New Brunswick, New Jersey. However a couple of letters are from Jackson, Michigan and Ohio. Most of the letters are from McDonald to investors hoping that they can help fund the production of the cultivator. He also writes to Nelson Dunham, an associate, about the difficulty in finding investor, "I think I would not create any unnecessary alarm, get posted from Washington first before much is said.... I will endeavor to push things as fast as possible". There are letters from various salesmen offering to pitch the cultivator and also including their input on how they'd change the machine if it were theirs. Particularly Johnathan Baker who wrote letter after letter about business meetings and working on the project with McDonald. Baker does not show up for the meeting about the cultivator at first, "Am sorry to be obtund to say they are not here yet, h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hirzel, Hermann Robert Catumby - (1864 Buenos Aires/Argentinien - Berlin 1939)
[Click Below for Full Description]

N. P.: Privately photographed, n. d. (ca 1868)., 1868. First edition. Two photographs: A). 6 1/8" x 3 7/8" photograph of Pete Maxwell and Henry Leis, and B). 6" x 9" photograph of Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Named after former New Mexico Territory military governor Edwin Vose Sumner, U.S. Fort Sumner was a military fort charged with the internment of nearby Navajo and Mescalero Apache populations from 1863 to 1868. The federal government closed the fort in 1868 and sold its buildings to Lucien Maxwell, a prominent New Mexico landowner, in 1870. In the latter 1870s Maxwell's son Pete befriended legendary outlaw Billy the Kid, and it was in his house that Billy was killed by Pat Garrett. Billy the Kid is buried in the old military cemetery in Fort Sumner, as is Lucien Maxwell. Lucien Bonaparte Maxwell was a mountain man, rancher, scout, and farmer who at one point owned more than 1,700,000 acres (6,900 km2). Along with Thomas Catron and Ted Turner, Maxwell was one of the largest private landowners in United States history. Pete Maxwell was the only son of Lucien Maxwell, who in addition to his son, also had eight daughters. The photograph of Maxwell and Leis has a small corner chip to the top left corner, a small hole punched in the bottom center and a closed tear to the bottom right corner, else a good copy. The photograph of Fort Sumner is in very good condition and has extensive notations in pencil on the verso regarding Pete Maxwell's purchase of "Old Fort Sumner."

ÅNGSTRÖM, Anders Jonas.
Upsalla: W. Schultz, 1868. First edition. First edition, a very fine copy in unrestored original printed wrappers, and rare thus, of one of the founding works of spectroscopy in which Ångström demonstrated the presence of hydrogen and a number of other elements in the sun; the atlas contains his great map of the solar spectrum. Since the plates of the atlas were simply laid in to the printed wrappers (and not sewn), the wrappers were often lost or damaged; it is rare to find these wrappers present and in fine condition as in our copy. In his Nobel Prize lecture, Arthur Schawlow (who shared the 1981 prize for his contributions to the development of laser spectroscopy) wrote: "Fraunhofer had charted the dark lines in the spectrum of the Sun, and had measured their wavelengths. But it was Ångström who first identified some of these lines as corresponding to bright lines emitted by particular substances ... Most importantly, he showed the red line of hydrogen." "After 1861 Ångström intensively studied the spectrum of the sun, noticing the presence of hydrogen in the solar atmosphere and confirming the probable existence there of a number of other elements. In 1868 he published the monumental Recherches sur le Spectre Solaire, which contained an atlas of the solar spectrum with measurements of the wavelengths of approximately a thousand lines determined by the use of diffraction gratings. Ångström expressed his results in units of one ten-millionth of a millimetre - a unit of length that has been named the Ångström unit in his honor. 1868. "General Grants election has brought such actual Peace, that there is not a part of a peg even, to hang an excitement on" Sherman turns down an invitation to a "Grand Reunion of the Western Armies at Chicago." WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN. Autograph Letter, to an unnamed general. Annapolis, Maryland, December 8, 1868. 2 pp., quarto. Sherman originally wrote this content as part of a longer letter; he marked this leaf "copy" and ends it with marks that show this section to be complete. Inventory #23562.02 Complete Transcript Copy U.S. Naval Academy Annapolis Md. Dec 8, 1868 Dear General, I had already received an invitation to the Grand Review of the Western Armies at Chicago, when I received your letter of Dec 2. I am however too unwell to go any where, and am now under the care of a physician who has put me under a certain course of treatment that I have to comply with. I assure you that I would be most happy to witness your Reunion which I expect will be a very pleasant affair, and I should be much pleased to meet there, the officers of the army with whom I have been at different times associated. I would not be surprised if this were the last meeting held by your Association, as General Grants election has brought such actual Peace, that there is not a part of a peg even, to hang an excitement on. Your old Army Corps will in the next four years have almost forgotten that there has been any thing like war, and the members devoting themselves to money making pursuits, will be unable to attend these meetings as they have done heretofore. Perhaps it is just as well that i … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Chinese Indentured Servitude in Cuba]
[Macao, 1868. [3]pp. Partially-printed forms on two leaves, completed in manuscript. First leaf 16 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches, second leaf 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. Old folds. Minor separations and some chipping to edges of first leaf. Minor loss along folds of second leaf costing a few letters, with minor tape repair on verso. Tender, but still in good plus condition. Manuscript manifest listing Chinese laborers bound for the Spanish colony of Cuba from Macao. The list includes 213 Chinese men bound for agricultural indentured servitude in Cuba aboard the ship Guantanamo, listing each person's name, age, and town of birth. Their ages range from twenty to forty. The document is signed on the final page by José de Aguilar, the Spanish consul at Macao. Formal slavery persisted in Cuba until 1886, but from the mid-19th century it was accompanied by a significant population working in indentured servitude. Cuba's massive sugar industry had consumed huge imports of African slaves in the 18th century. The abolition of the slave trade in 1808, vigorously enforced by the British Navy, meant that a new source of labor was necessary. Indentured servitude became the predominant source for labor in the region. Unlike the earlier waves of European immigrants who travelled to the New World as indentured servants, Asia was now the primary source. Between 1848 and 1874, 125,000 Chinese indentured servants arrived in Cuba alone - a figure outstripped only by the number who indentured themselves in California. A large percentage of these laborers were kidnapped from their homeland, with many … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cincinnati, Ohio: J.P. Miller & Co, 1868. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I can provide a link to many more photos. Just ask! 1868 1ed General Nathan Forrest Confederate Civil War Campaigns KKK Pryor Jordan Nathan Bedford Forrest was a 19th-century Confederate general during the Civil War. And while he was notable commanding officer, he is most remembered for his controversial involvement in the Ku Klux Klan, white-supremacist mindset, and alleged role in the murder of black soldiers at Fort Pillow. In 1868, authors Thomas Jordan and J.P. Pryor published a three-volume work on Forrest's Civil War campaigns. Per Eicher on this book: "This early biography of the cavalry great makes heavy use of the general's papers and was written with his collaboration... A strong Southern bias, this collection of papers and notes merits continued inspection. The work is a sourcebook of primary material on Forrest's generalship because of his contributions and involvement in this project. The work contains a solid and relatively unembellished narrative of Forrest's exploits throughout the war. Subsequent biographies of Forrest have drawn heavily on this still-useful work." Bradley notes: "the value of this book is found in its thoroughness and in the roster of units Forrest commanded in the closing fifteen months of the war." Lewis Carroll
1868. For sale is an exceptionally rare first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. Published by McMillan and Co. Ltd., London, 1868. Thirteenth Thousand. Collated as complete. With illustrations throughout by John Tenniel. Bound in it's publisher's original crimson cloth, with gilt decoration to the spine and boards. The endpapers are the original dark green-coated, and all page edges gilt. The binding was to the taste and design of the author, and it was designed as such to symbolise a holly wreath (released as it was, before Christmas). Externally it remains in very pleasing order, with the cloth, in the main, lovely and bright. Occasional rubbing in places, but this is to be expected with such a binding. Internally it has a couple of small ownership inscriptions (as shown in the images), but it is very, very clean and bright throughout. This volume comes very highly recommended indeed. Not only is this a most rare early impression of the first edition, it is bound as the author intended, and indeed such examples are seldom seen on the open market. [Attributes: First Edition]
