FITZGERALD, Edward.
London: Bernard Quaritch,, 1868. the Astronomer Poet of Persia. Rendered into English Verse. Second edition. Quarto (204 x 156 mm). Near-contemporary green morocco by Proudfoot of Euston Square, spine lettered in gilt, quadruple gilt fillet border to covers and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Bookplate with monogram CN (or NC) and Latin motto, engraved by Allen Wyon (1843-1907). Spine and extremities a little toned and very slightly rubbed, very minor creasing to first few leaves. A near-fine copy. Second edition, substantially expanded and revised from the first of 1859. Five hundred copies of the second edition were printed, with Quaritch selling each at a price of 1s. 6d.; when a copy re-appeared in their catalogue in 1929, it had already reached a price of 52 10s. (Potter, p. 12). FitzGerald substantially revised the text of the Rubiyt four times, with none of these five versions seen as truly definitive. The second edition is the longest at 110 quatrains. Omar Khayym (1048-1131) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and poet, author of about a thousand quatrains. The fact that Omar Khayym is the most famous poet of the East in the West is entirely due to FitzGerald's celebrated adaptations, which would prove to be the "most popular verse translation into English ever made" (Decker, p. xiv). FitzGerald himself referred to his work on the Rubiyt as a "transmogrification" rather than translation, describing how he "mashed up" several stanzas into one, and calling the result "A pretty little Eclogue tessellated out of [Omar's] scattered … [Click Below for Full Description]

(DICKENS, Charles ) MENKEN, Adah Isaacs
London: [privately printed], 1868. London: [privately printed],, 1868. Sextodecimo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt facsimile signature and title to front cover. Housed in a large cloth box, black morocco label. Portrait frontispiece and facsimile letter. Shelf label to rear pastedown. Cloth a little cockled and marked, frontispiece loosening at head, a few instances of finger-soiling. A very good copy. First edition, the dedication copy, with the bookplate of Charles Dickens. This was the only book of the famous American actress Adah Isaacs Menken (1835-1868), published within days of her early death. Menken was a great admirer of Dickens, first meeting him in 1864 at her London performance of Mazeppa. The meeting proved awkward, as Dickens disapproved of her bohemian lifestyle. Nevertheless, Dickens helped in the composition of the book and she sought his permission to dedicate it to him. The first edition includes his agreement, printed in facsimile on the printed dedication verso. The publishers had, however, merged two different letters to make the facsimile. Although Dickens's permission was not in question, they dropped the facsimile from later editions. Two states of the first edition are recorded: with the facsimile inserted separately; and with the facsimile printed directly, as here. Though sometimes cited as different issues or impressions, the two states were more likely issued together. Dickens had a large library, the majority of which was acquired eight years after his death by the London bookseller Henry Sotheran, though several hundred … [Click Below for Full Description]

London - Paris - New York: 1868. 1st edition thus (Gimbel B295), i.e., with the lithographic plate reproducing Dicken's letter. This copy SIGNED by Dickens, in blue ink, on the original ffep, "Faithfully yours / Charles Dickens [flourish]" [5], v, 141, [1] pp. Binder's blanks at front & rear. Frontis of Menken. Facsimile of Dickens' "letter", which is actually comprised of portions from 2 letters Dickens sent Menken [cf. LETTERS, v. 11]. Cuts as head- tailpieces. Sq 12mo. 5-1/2" x 4-1/4". Early 20th C. 3/4 green morocco binding with marbled paper boards & eps. TEG. Original publisher's green cloth binding bound-in at rear. Spine sunned to a mellow golden tan. A handsome VG+ copy. Item #33231.1 Dickens knew Menken through her 1864 performances at Astley's, during which time she was accepted by the London Bohemian crowd, holding 'literary salons' at her suite at the Westminster Palace Hotel. Her aspirations toward literature resulted in this modest volume of poetry, which she decicated to "Charles Dickens", a gesture the Inimitable accepted with 'great pleasure'. This particular copy comes from a prominent Detroit businessman's collection, gathered in the 1920s, and only now, 90 years later, coming onto the market. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

There is grandeur in this view of life .... from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved. Here we offer a very early edition of Charles Darwin's classic, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, (complete with tri-fold-out exhibit) published by D. Appleton and Co., New York, in 1868. This is the very rare fourth edition, published before the phrase "survival of the fittest" was added to the text and before the "On" was removed from the title. Book has been reblocked and rebound with matching acid-free patches over hinges at end-paper gutters, remnants of original spine cloth reapplied atop new brown spine cloth, and a new placeholding ribbon. Period inscription over the top of the title page. Very tight and square binding. Pulp is overall a bit stiff but quite durable with very bright and crisp text. Fold-out is in great shape. Measures approximately 5.5 x 8-inches; 440 indexed pages, plus 2 pages of ads. This very rare relic of scientific history will make a beautiful centerpiece to any rare books collection, a canny investment, or a very thoughtful and special gift. ** Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer? Sacramento, Calif., H.S. Crocker & Co., 1868. 30 pp. Softcover in original printed pink wraps. Some minor chipping around the edges, not affecting the text in any way. Minor soiling to the covers as well. Incredibly scarce title. OCLC locates only 2 original copies in libraries (18192998). Only one has appeared at public auction, and that was in 1948. A truly beautiful copy of this work. Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

1868. Cf pied de notice. BAUDRY (Etienne) - COURBET (Gustave, ill. de). Le Camp des bourgeois. Paris, E. Dentu, 1868. (in Gustave Courbet par Théodore Duret). ''J'ai - écrivit Zola - entre les mains un livre singulier et intéressant, dont personne n'a encore parlé, et qui sera la curiosité … [Click Below for Full Description]

On a folded sheet of Phelps, Dodge & Co. stationery. To J. C. Newkirk, Esq. "Your esteem'd favr of the 25 ult and 18 came duly to hand the former enclosing memo obtained from Magoun of lots sold & of those remaining, the latter en check for 200$ on. of payments from Renlack [?] & Franklin. I am perfectly astonished at the obstinacy of the man and cannot understand him at all. I find by looking in my papers that his last settlement was in 1858. With these and the map you can tell pretty well how the matter of the lots stand. But as to what he has rcd I do not see as we can get at it in any other way but by trying to find from the parties as to what they have paid, he has no doubt rcd some 4000$ that he has never paid over. Perhaps if you should say if he will now render a full. that I will take his notes pay at such times as he may desire for the balance due me he may come to terms. Suppose you try him one more with his letters in your hands and the map. I should like with the opening spring to close out what is left for what it can be sold for & will be glad if you will either take it in hand or employ some real estate man to do it. Please get the map corrected by Magoun. (This he will not reprise. I am sure.) and let it be keep carefully as I have no other. Very resp[ectfully] yours." [Bruxelles]: [DROZ, Gustave]. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lewis Carroll
London: Macmillan and Co, 1868. Twelfth thousand. Complete, with forty two charming illustrations by John Tenniel depicting the many much-loved scenes including The Mad Hatter's Tea Party and The White Rabbit looking at his pocket watch. Upon the original publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865, Tenniel was far more well-known than Carroll, owing to his successful career as an illustrator and cartoonist, including many pieces for the satirical periodical 'Punch'. Tenniel also illustrated the sequel, 'Alice Through The Looking Glass' and the coloured revised illustrations for 'The Nursery Alice'. Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) was a mathematician and author best known for this work, and its sequel 'Alice Through the Looking-Glass'. The work is credited as perhaps the greatest example of literary nonsense and whilst the work was meant for children (indeed the tale was originally told to a friend's daughter, Alice Liddell) the word play, logic and fantastical themes present in the work have interested and delighted scholars since its publication. This work is an extremely early example of an influential and charming piece of Victorian children's literature. CONDITION In a red cloth binding with gilt detail depicting Alice holding a pig to the front board and the Cheshire Cat to the rear board. Externally generally smart with bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine resulting in some slight loss to the cloth. Joints slightly strained resulting in splitting to the cloth of the backstrip. Marks and discolouration to the boards and the spine. … [Click Below for Full Description]

The following information about Didot is from Wikipedia: Firmin Didot was born in Paris into a family of printers founded by François Didot, the father of 11 children. Firmin was one of his grandchildren. The family's paper manufactory was located at Essonnes, a town c. 30 km southeast of Paris near Corbeil, which had notable paper factories. Work Didot invented the word "stereotype", which in printing refers to the metal printing plate created for the actual printing of pages (as opposed to printing pages directly with movable type), and used the process extensively, revolutionizing the book trade by his cheap editions. His manufactory was a place of pilgrimage for the printers of the world. He first used the process in his edition of Callet's Tables of Logarithms (1795), in which he secured an accuracy till then unattainable. He published stereotyped editions of French, English and Italian classics at a very low price.[1] He was also the author of two tragedies -- La Reine de Portugal and La Mort d'Annibal -- and he wrote metrical translations from Virgil, Tyrtaeus and Theocritus.[1]There is a books … [Click Below for Full Description]
