Chicago: Published by Jack Wing, 1868. McNally & CO., 81 Dearborn Street, Dealers in Books, Stationery and Periodicals. Western Agents for the Trade. Hazlitt & Reed, Printers, 90 Washington St. 4to, original purple cloth, gilt title at cover, blind-stamped borders to both covers. [9], 12-72, [2] pp., illus., ads. Second edition, identified on the title page as "Hotel edition." Scarce account of the construction of the Chicago Lake Tunnel, built as a means of supplying the city with clean water, and generally considered one of the most remarkable engineering feats of the period. By the 1860's the waters in the immediate vicinity of Chicago were so badly polluted that the city faced a water supply crisis. Various solutions were proposed before the city adopted that of engineer E. S. Chesbrough to build a tunnel two miles in length beneath the floor of Lake Michigan, in order to tap the clean water at a distance from the city. The first edition of this fascinating account was published in 1867. This "Hotel Edition" was expanded with various advertisements, several of which incorporate the illustrations of tunnel construction that appeared in the first edition. A very interesting ante-fire publication. OCLC records only three copies of the Hotel Edition. CONDITION: Good, head and foot of spine chipped, covers discolored, especially along lower edge of front cover, small losses of cloth at lower edge of front cover and corners, light foxing to paste-downs, light damp-stain in upper margin of text block. Schwind, Moritz von, Maler (1804-1872)
M[ünchen], 22. VI, 1868. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo.

(aus den Aufzeichnungen des Pinkafelder Pfarrers Joseph M. London: Tinsley Brothers, 18683 vols, 8vo; Red morocco over marbled boards, gilt titled spines, marbled edges; vol I pp. viii, 315; vol II pp. [ii], 298; Vol III pp. [iv], 310; spines a little faded, a little rubbing to corners, some faint dog ears, some very faint/mild foxing to the edges of some gatherings, lightly worn copies, internally clean and bright, with the bookplates of John Martineau and Harry Bradfer-Lawrence to the front endpapers. Both copies lack the half-titles and adverts which would have conventionally been removed from the copies during the rebinding process. This is a mixed edition set of the Moonstone. Volume 1 is a first edition, Volumes 2 & 3 are second editions from the same year. The Moonstone is tied with the Woman in White for the most influential and popular novel in the Collins canon. It contains - and arguably popularised - many of the tropes we now associate with the detective genre. Whilst writing it, Collins was struck with an attack of rheumatic gout, which he was to battle with for the rest of his life. As a result, much of the novel was written by dictation, but his wailing so disturbed his amanuenses that several resigned in quick succession. On recovering enough to read his work, it is said that Collins didn't recognise it as his own. It probably wasn't a ghost, but no-one can prove that. The Moonstone was snapped up by the public, and Collins outsold Dickens's work both in serialized and in novel form for the duration of its run. This may have caused some tension between the … [Click Below for Full Description]

With volumes two and three featuring the original half titles. Featuring a folding facsimile of a forged note, and the genuine handwriting of John Wardlaw. Charles Reade was an English novelist and dramatist, best known for The Cloister and the Hearth. Reade began his literary career as a dramatist, and he chose to have "dramatist" stand first in the list of his occupations on his tombstone. As an author, he always had an eye to stage effect in scene and situation as well as in dialogue. Co-written with Dionysius Lardner Boursiquot, commonly known as Dion Boucicault, was an Irish actor and playwright famed for his melodramas. By the later part of the 19th century, Boucicault had become known on both sides of the Atlantic as one of the most successful actor-playwright-managers then in the English-speaking theatre. The New York Times heralded him in his obituary as "the most conspicuous English dramatist of the 19th century." Complete in three volumes. Rossetti, William Michael and Algernon C. Swinburne
London: John Camden Hotten Piccadilly, (1868). Paperback. First Edition. Scarce. Written in two parts with the first being by William Michael Rossetti and the second by Swinburne. Swinburne's criticism discusses works by Leighton, Millais, Watts, Moore, Whistler, Sandys, D.G. Rossetti, and others. He saves his discussion of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's paintings for last stating that "his work must always hold its place as second in significance and value to no work done by any English painter of his time." Amidst his words of admiration for Dante's latest paintings, he incorporates the first publication of his poems, which the painter had written across the frames of his pieces. The poems included are "Sibylla Palmifera", "Venus Verticordia", and "Lady Lilith." Very good in original cream paper wrappers with black title to front panel. The covers are darkened along the edges with minor soiling and a few spots of foxing. There are a few chips to the spine panel and to the rear corner. The interior is clean overall with a few splits to the binding and a few small spots of foxing on first and last few pages. Housed in a modern green cloth covered slipcase with black leather title label to spine and pull out chemise. 51 pages. PRERAPH/022414. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Webster, Daniel
Washington DC: Gideon. First edition, presentation copy to W. E. Robinson from his friend Dan'l Webster. Wraps bound into recent half morocco gilt, with additional signature of Webster appended to front wrap, and with additional note from 1868 on Connecticut Courant letterhead from Robinson to a Mr. Sanborn asking him to send his semi-weekly columns to his Walden address rather than a former one. He also makes mention of Sanborn's latest article and how it will be interesting to a number of readers. This same copy, minus the additional material, was sold at Sotheby's in 1985 for a total of $522 including buyer's commission. The Rhode Island Question centered on Dorr's Rebellion of 1841-42, which was a populist rebellion to change antiquated electoral laws in Rhode Island that dated back to 1663 requiring voters to own land, which in addition to later laws requiring voters to be white and have at least $134 to their name, made for widespread disenfranchisement. Very Good.

STEPHENS, Alexander Hamilton
Philadelphia: Pa.: National Pub. Co.; Chicago, Ill.: Zeigler, McCurdy, 1868. 1868 1ed Constitutional View of CIVIL WAR by Alexander Stephens Confederate 2vCommentary on the United States Constitution by the Confederate Vice President!Often considered the companion volume to Jefferson Davis's 'Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government', Alexander Hamilton Stephens's 'A Constitutional View of the Late War' is"the most elaborate and best argument for the constitutional validity of the doctrine of state sovereignty and the right of secession." (Howes).Stephens heavily emphasizes the importance of state's rights based on the Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution and that "it was devised for the states, by the states." (Eicher). He claims throughout this work that the debaters who disagreed with him were mistaken in their facts; however, Eicher notes that upon close inspection, Stephens himself was incorrect on many of this beliefs toward the American governmental systems. Stephens' views and loyalties changed throughout the Civil War. Originally serving as Vice President to the Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Stephens began to oppose many of Davis's war efforts. Eventually, Stephens found himself back in the United States Congress in 1873 following the success of this work.
