[Chinese Indentured Servitude in Cuba]
[Macao, 1868. [3]pp. Partially-printed forms on two leaves, completed in manuscript. First leaf 16 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches, second leaf 13 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. Old folds. Minor separations and some chipping to edges of first leaf. Minor loss along folds of second leaf costing a few letters, with minor tape repair on verso. Tender, but still in good plus condition. Manuscript manifest listing Chinese laborers bound for the Spanish colony of Cuba from Macao. The list includes 213 Chinese men bound for agricultural indentured servitude in Cuba aboard the ship Guantanamo, listing each person's name, age, and town of birth. Their ages range from twenty to forty. The document is signed on the final page by José de Aguilar, the Spanish consul at Macao. Formal slavery persisted in Cuba until 1886, but from the mid-19th century it was accompanied by a significant population working in indentured servitude. Cuba's massive sugar industry had consumed huge imports of African slaves in the 18th century. The abolition of the slave trade in 1808, vigorously enforced by the British Navy, meant that a new source of labor was necessary. Indentured servitude became the predominant source for labor in the region. Unlike the earlier waves of European immigrants who travelled to the New World as indentured servants, Asia was now the primary source. Between 1848 and 1874, 125,000 Chinese indentured servants arrived in Cuba alone - a figure outstripped only by the number who indentured themselves in California. A large percentage of these laborers were kidnapped from their homeland, with many … [Click Below for Full Description]

JORDAN, Thomas; P
J.P. Miller & Co. 1868 1ed General Nathan Forrest Confederate Civil War Campaigns KKK Pryor Jordan Nathan Bedford Forrest was a 19th-century Confederate general during the Civil War. And while he was notable commanding officer, he is most remembered for his controversial involvement in the Ku Klux Klan, white-supremacist mindset, and alleged role in the murder of black soldiers at Fort Pillow. In 1868, authors Thomas Jordan and J.P. Pryor published a three-volume work on Forrest’s Civil War campaigns. Per Eicher on this book: “This early biography of the cavalry great makes heavy use of the general’s papers and was written with his collaboration A strong Southern bias, this collection of papers and notes merits continued inspection. The work is a sourcebook of primary material on Forrest’s generalship because of his contributions and involvement in this project. The work contains a solid and relatively unembellished narrative of Forrest’s exploits throughout the war. Subsequent biographies of Forrest have drawn heavily on this still-useful work.” Bradley notes: “the value of this book is found in its thoroughness and in the roster of units Forrest commanded in the closing fifteen months of the war.” Item number: #8371 Price: $750 JORDAN, Thomas; PRYOR, J.P. Lewis Carroll
1868. For sale is an exceptionally rare first edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll. Published by McMillan and Co. Ltd., London, 1868. Thirteenth Thousand. Collated as complete. With illustrations throughout by John Tenniel. Bound in it's publisher's original crimson cloth, with gilt decoration to the spine and boards. The endpapers are the original dark green-coated, and all page edges gilt. The binding was to the taste and design of the author, and it was designed as such to symbolise a holly wreath (released as it was, before Christmas). Externally it remains in very pleasing order, with the cloth, in the main, lovely and bright. Occasional rubbing in places, but this is to be expected with such a binding. Internally it has a couple of small ownership inscriptions (as shown in the images), but it is very, very clean and bright throughout. This volume comes very highly recommended indeed. Not only is this a most rare early impression of the first edition, it is bound as the author intended, and indeed such examples are seldom seen on the open market. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Cuba]. [Slavery]
[Guanabacoa, 1868. About very good.. Manuscript broadside, approximately 13.75 x 11.5 inches. Folded horizontally. A few worm holes, marginally affecting text. Light tanning and dampstaining; a bit of offsetting. A manuscript table that records incidents of cholera amongst the slaves on the plantation of Don Joaquin de Peñalver in Guanabacoa, Cuba, during the summer of 1868. The broadside lists forty-two slaves that came down with the disease in July and the beginning of August of that year, and supplies their given names, place of birth, age, height, marital status, and the date that they contracted cholera. The record does not differentiate between slaves that were invalided and those that died from the disease, but it seems unlikely that many recovered. These cases were part of a larger outbreak of cholera on the island during 1867 and 1868, that principally affected the enslaved population there and killed thousands. Peñalver was a prominent sugar farmer in the region east of Havana in the mid-19th century. A unique record of disease affecting Cuban slaves just prior to the onset of the Ten Years' War.

Collins, Wilkie
New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1868. First American Edition. First American edition, wrappered issue. 223, [1] pages. Frontispiece (included in pagination) with in-text illustrations throughout. Publisher's light brown printed wrappers, perfect-bound; text block edges trimmed. Very Good, with rubbed and edge-worn wrappers, a few stains and inked signature to front wrap; rolled spine, chipped at head and tail with evidence of glue added along rear hinge. Contents generally bright; chipping to some individual page edges; a few leaves roughly opened toward rear; corners bumped and a little curled. Still, a remarkable survival of an extremely fragile issue. The Moonstone is often considered the very first detective novel. T.S. Eliot called it "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels." This issue not mentioned in Gasson's Wilkie Collins:An Illustrated Guide, and no other examples found in the trade. A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone. Very Good.

Grimms' Goblins - circa 1868 edition published by George Vickers. The penny dreadful edition of Vickers' series of Fairy Books for Boys and Girls, bound from the 25 weekly parts and featuring 22 full page colour illustrations by "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne), without the black and white illustrations which featured in the earlier edition and with fewer tales. Printed by Robson and Son. 398 pages, containing 98 tales, not all from the Brothers Grimm. The book is bound in the publisher's blue cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt and blind, the spine has been re-backed at some point onto similarly toned blue cloth, the boards are somewhat bumped, rubbed and faded, more so to the spine, with minor tears to the cloth. The text block has gilt to all edges, it retains the original and rather striking colour title page, with the publishing information cropped at the bottom to fit the format, the pages are slightly toned, there is minor foxing and slight cracking and the endpapers were probably replaced when the spine was re-backed, though the paper used looks to be Victorian and they may be the originals. Arguably even more uncommon than the 1861 original due to the even cheaper production processes used.

Sprague & French, Lansing [Ohio], 1868. 8-paneled paper balloon promoting U. S. Grant for president, 23" x 7" per panel, printed patterns in red and green with unique engravings in center of each panel, one being the title, another an engraved portrait of General Grant in uniform, and the rest being unrelated domestic scenes. Considering Grant's portrait this was almost certainly produced for his 1868 presidential campaign. One seam has split completely, others have closed tears, some light spotting near the bottom of some panels, possibly from having been in close contact with the candle fire, no loss. Accompanied by the original wire frame and candle holder.
