Group of Four Labor Contracts for Chinese Immigrant Workers.

1868. Setting the Terms for Coolie Labor in Cuba [Cuba]. ["Coolie" Labor]. [Group of Four Labor Contracts for Chinese Immigrant Workers]. [Havana], 1868-1869. Part-printed documents, three 8-1/2" x 12," one 8-1/2" x 13." Two have some toning, the other two browned. Faint horizontal fold lines, a few worm holes, some wear and chipping to edges. Each contract endorsed with a stamped or embossed seal. * These immigration contracts for indentured Chinese "coolie" laborers are valuable sources of information. They outline the duration of the contract, the nature of the work, the hours to be worked per day, payment and special considerations. They are signed by witnesses for the workers; three of these are signed in Chinese characters. In the mid-nineteenth century, Cuban agents supplemented the slave population with thousands of Chinese indentured laborers. They were needed to build railroads and work on sugar plantations. Most contracts granted free Cuban citizenship to workers when they satisfied the term of their contracts. Several remained in Cuba. And by the end of the nineteenth century Havana had the largest Chinatown in Latin America.

Autor: Claudia Kromrei, geb. 1969, Studium der Architektur in Berlin und Zürich, Mitarbeit als Architektin bei Prof. Axel Schultes und Prof. Klaus Theo Brenner, Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeit am Institut für Architektur der TU Berlin, 2009 Promotion bei Prof. Neumeyer ebenda. Forschungsschwerpunkt auf der städtischen Wohnhausarchitektur des 20. Jahrhunderts, derzeit Post-Doc an der TU Berlin.

"Corser was one of the most learned and enthusiastic book-collectors of his day, and his noble library contained, besides a wonderful collection of unique and rare editions of the works of the early English poets and dramatists, a fine block-book…seven Caxtons, and a large number of books printed by Machlinia, Wynkyn de Worde…and other early English printers. The library also comprised a large number of books of emblems, drolleries, jest-books, garlands…Mr. Corser also possessed a few choice manuscripts…There were 6,244 lots in the eight sales, and the total amount realized was 19,781 pounds… "Some additional manuscripts and books which had belonged to Mr. Corser were sold after his death, at Manchester, by Capes, Dunn and Pilcher on December the 13th, 1876 and two following days."-Fletcher, pp. 372-76). This final portion comprised 740 lots and made 1,408 pounds. Many of Corser's books were bought by Henry Huth. Tipped-in are several letters from Sotheby's regarding the Corser sale and reviews from The Times. Fine and most handsome set; rare when complete. Bookplate of A.R.A. Hobson. ❧ De Ricci, p. 150-"a particularly fine library.".

Lieutenant Colonel Viktor Ernst Rudolph von Scheliha, a Prussian, served as Chief of Staff to General Buckner and acted also later as Chief Engineer of the Department of the Gulf, at Mobile. An English Officer, Captain Fitzgerald Ross, met him there in February 1864: “The Colonel is engaged in erecting a new line of forts round Mobile, which are perfect models of strength and judicious arrangements. They are built entirely of sand, with revetments of turf along. The turf on the embankments is fastened down to the sand by slips of the Cherokee rose,an exceedingly prickly shrub, which when grown will become a very disagreeable obstacle to a storming party. Mobile will soon be one of the mostly strongly fortified places in the world.” (See: Mahin: “The Blessed Place of Freedom: Europeans in Civil War America” 2002; Lonn: “Foreigners in the Confederacy” 1940, reprinted 2002; Tidwell: “Come Retribution: The Confederate Secret Service and the Assassination of Lincoln” 2001). In his heart, Scheliha remained a Prussian: “Treatise on Coast-Defence” is humbly dedicated to Prince Adelbert of Prussia.

Japanese Game Board "Puzzle for Navigating or Wandering the World / Navigation et Prominade der Morde (sic) "

, 1868. 1868. Otherwise very good condition. A geographical board game created in Japan during the Meiji period when the Emperor was opening Japanese society to Western influences. Roughly translated the Japanese title is, "Countries by Cruise Ship." The game starts with the key in the lower center of the board, with six circles which correspond to color coded regions of the world; Asia (yellow); Europe (red); North America (blue); South America (yellow); Africa (red); Australia (blue). It culminates in the top margin at Mount Fuji. There are 100 squares in 8 rows on the board, and each box within the row has an associated image and text in Japanese; some images correspond with the landscape of the destination - others are quite imaginary. Besides landscapes, there are many birds and animals (elephant, monkey, oxen, antelope, camel), ships and flags. There are soldiers, bathers, a man reading in a chair, Tartars and some Westerners. The indigenous people at the North Pole are wearing only loin cloths, sitting next to a fire. The title appears in three different languages at the right border of the game, first in French "Navigation et prominade der Morde" (sic), then in English, "Puzzle for Navigating or Wandering the World", then in Japanese. Further down on right margin are instructions for playing (in Japanese)- 'Roll dice' and 'How to play', 'New Year's Day - Yokahama', 'January 1868', 'New edition' and possibly the name of the creator of the game. Above the image in the each box is a series of numbers and names which correspond to the number of days it takes to sail to a location. The North American region includes Mexico with a conestoga wagon in Row 3 Box 1 (or 3-1) ; Columbia, South of the US (5-3) (buildings); New York (5-2) (men farming/scythe); San Francisco (8-6) (red roof), Washington, D.C. (2-5) with an image of the Capitol dome; (8-15) is the North Pole. The Asiatic region displays: Beijing (2-2) identified with a wall and covered urns; Chosen (Korea) with a tiger (2-3) ; Siam (4-1) (King); Sumatra (6-3); Siberia (7-3); Kirghiz (8-3); Siberia (7-3); Ryukyu (2-2); Tokyo (5-1) (with soldiers); Canton (4-4) (tea ceremony); Hong Kong (4-5); Taiwan (4-6); Peking (1-5); Tartary (5-9); Persia (3-9) (bathers wearing leaf skirts (?); Constantinople (1-7) with a mosque dome and the crescent on top with a red designed flag; Manchuria (5-5); Ceylon (5-12) with stacked tea bales and warehouse; (6-7) is a port in India (with a camel). The Australian region includes Sydney (8-2) (water, hills, a domed and rectangular buildings); New Zealand (7-13) with a many-masted early ship at shore, possibly one of Captain Cook's ships, flying a flag of St. George; the Antarctic/South Pole (or Port) (5-4) (ice/sea). European locales displayed include: London (1-1) with a bridge over the Thames; Lisbon (2-1); Austria (1-2) (two small animals); Greece (3-6) with a blue and white striped flag; Amsterdam (2-6); Denmark (3-10) ; Paris (1-7) a group of Westerners erecting (or pulling down) a rope line hung with flags, a few French and another red flag with diagonal cross bars; St. Petersburg (1-3); (5-7) is the Mediterranean; Paris (7-4) with two men sitting at an outdoor table, presumably at a café. Africa is represented by Canary (image of a globe) (6-13). Many of the locations were not identifiable, and those that were identified were done so by Japanese speakers. The game board measures 35 x 21.5" with 1/2 to 1" additional border. Woodblock with original hand color. Sometimes worn at original folds, some loss at a few of those intersections, a couple of old wormholes, backed on tissue, 1.5" square at bottom border with loss of text. The images are clear.

Crimes of the Civil War and Curse of the Funding System

15C: Baltimore. Poor with no dust jacket. 1868. First Edition. Hardcover. This specific hardback book is in poor condition with a brown leather grain like, decoratively embossed, hard board cover that has no cover material over the book spine, although the back cover and pages are still very sturdily holding together. The fron cover and first blank end page has detached from the balance of the book but is present. The title page of the book and beyond is still aedequately attached to the body of the book along with the rear cover. The pages, although yellowed from age, are still clean and unmarked and remarkably nice. This is a wonderful copy of this rare and historically important book and is in, because of the front cover mainly, in poor condition. We package all books in custom cardboard book boxes and ship daily with tracking numbers. ; This book outlines many different types of crimes committed during the war from selling horses to corrupt quartermasters for a huge profit to considering Jefferson Davis treasonous. This is an original edition of this book. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 512 pages .

The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication.

John Murray, London 1868 - First edition, first issue, presentation copy, trimmed for presentation and with a slip of paper with inscription ?From the Author? in Darwin?s hand pasted to the front free endpaper. The term ?survival of the fittest? (borrowed at Wallace?s insistence from Herbert Spencer?s 1866 Principles of Biology) first appeared in the Variation (vol. 2, p. 89), preceding its first use in the fifth edition of the Origin of Species (1869). ?This represents the only section of Darwin?s big book on the origin of species which was printed in his lifetime and corresponds to its first two intended chapters? (Freeman). ?Its two volumes were intended to provide overwhelming evidence for the ubiquity of variation, although they would also incidentally answer Lyell and Gray, who maintained that variations had not occurred purely by chance but were providentially directed. Darwin showed that breeders indeed selected from a vast array of minute random variations. He gave numerous instances of the causes of variability, including the direct effect of the conditions of life, reversion, the effects of use and disuse, saltation, prepotency, and correlated growth. The Variation also addressed a key criticism of the Origin of Species: that it lacked an adequate understanding of inheritance? (ODNB). This work ?contained his hypothesis of pangenesis, by means of which Darwin tried to frame an explanation of hereditary resemblance, inheritance of acquired characteristics, atavism, and regeneration. It was a brave attempt to account for a number of phenomena which were beyond the bounds of scientific knowledge in his day, such as fertilization by the union of sperm and egg, the mechanism of chromosomal inheritance, and the development of the embryo by successive cell division? (DSB). ABPC/RBH list only three other presentation copies of this first issue: Sotheby?s, 10 July 2012, £8750 = $13,660; Sir John Lubbock?s copy, Sotheby?s, 11 December 1992, £1500 = $2330 (hammer) ? these two copies with presentation slip inscribed by Darwin as in the present copy ? and Sotheby?s, 15 December 2011, £61,250 = $94,860, inscribed by Darwin to his daughter Henrietta. The most recent presentation copy on the market was offered by 19th Century Shop in 2014 (Cat. 150, $35,000), with the same paper slip inscribed ?From the Author? by Darwin as in the present copy.Provenance: Paper slip inscribed ?From the Author? in Darwin?s hand pasted to front free endpaper, recipient unknown; James McBryde (bookplate on front paste-down), a Scottish chemist from near Stranraer, who co-founded an alkali firm in St Helens, Lancashire, which later merged with other chemical companies to become Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). He owned a number of books on evolution, including several others by Darwin. On The Origin of Species was only an abstract of the long manuscript Darwin had begun writing on 14 May 1856 which he originally intended to complete and publish as the formal presentation of his views on evolution. Compared with the Origin, this work, which was to be titled Natural Selection, has more abundant examples in illustration of Darwin's argument plus an extensive citation of sources. It had reached a length of over one quarter of a million words and was well over half completed when on 18 June 1858 Darwin?s writing was dramatically interrupted when he received an essay from Alfred Russel Wallace in Borneo entitled On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection outlining his astonishingly parallel but independently conceived theory of natural selection. Darwin felt obliged to change his plans for initial publication; and, after the brief preliminary announcement was presented jointly with Wallace?s paper at the Linnean Society of London, he rapidly wrote out in eight months the new abstract of his views which appeared as the Origin of Species in 1859. But he still planned to publish a more extensive account o

        DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Writer.

      - Autograph Letter Signed (?Charles Dickens?) to J.C. Parkinson [Joseph Charles Parkinson, a contributor to All the Year Round], a glowing letter of recommendation for Parkinson who hoped to be appointed Commissioner of Inland Revenue. 3 pages 8vo, Gad?s Hill Place, Christmas Day, 1868. The image of Christmas as we know it today, with parties, dinners, family and friends gathered round the hearth, owes much to Dickens? Christmas novels. The family celebrations, however, did not prevent Dickens from dealing with his correspondence with his typical energy. The Letters of Charles Dickens (ed. Graham Storey) lists three letters from Dickens on this date, including this one. ? . . I am diffident of addressing Mr. Gladstone on the subject of your desire to be appointed to the vacant Commissionership of Inland Revenue, because, although my respect for him and confidence in him are second to those of no man in England . . . my personal acquaintance with him is very slight. But you may make . . . any use you please of this letter . . . In expressing my conviction that you deserve the place, and are in every way qualified for it, I found my testimony upon as accurate a knowledge of your character and abilities as any one can possibly have acquired. In my editorship ? both of Household Words and All the Year Round, you know very well that I have invariably offered you those subjects of political and social interest to write upon, in which integrity, exactness, a remarkable power of generalizing evidence, and balancing facts, and a special clearness in stating the case, were indispensable on the part of the writer. My confidence in your powers has never been misplaced, and through all our literary intercourse you have never been hasty or wrong. Whatever trust you have undertaken has been so completely discharged, that it has become my habit to read your proofs rather for my own edification, than . . . for the detection of some slip here or there, or the more pithy presentation of the subject. That your literary work has never interfered with the discharge of your official duties [Parkinson was a clerk in the Accountant and Comptroller?s department at the Inland Revenue], I may assume to be at least as well known to your colleagues as it is to me. It is idle to say that if the post were in my gift you should have it, because you have had, for some years, most of the posts of high trust that have been at my disposal. An excellent public servant in your literary sphere of action, I should be heartily glad if you could have this new opportunity of distinguishing yourself in the same character. And this is at least unselfish in me, for I suppose I should then lose you?? A footnote in the collected letters tells us that, despite this fulsome reference, Parkinson was not appointed to the post. Dickens? earliest recorded letter to Parkinson dates from August 1860, but their acquaintance developed into a warm friendship, and when Parkinson moved house in 1867, he asked Dickens for a portrait of him to hang in his new home. Parkinson?s articles in All the Year Round included subjects close to Dickens? heart ? the slums of Westminster, tenement housing, and life in the workhouse. The letter is tipped into a copy of Martin Chuzzlewit, in a handsome later light brown morocco binding, with gold tooling to the spine and edges. The letter has been published in Storey, The Letters of Charles Dickens, vol. 12.

        HE KNEW HE WAS RIGHT

1868. [in 32 weekly parts] With Illustrations by Marcus Stone. London: Virtue & Company, October 17 [1868] - May 22 [1869]. Original grey-green pictorial wrappers printed in red and black. First Edition, in 32 weekly parts (serialization was also available in eight monthly parts, and at the end the novel was issued in two volumes). Louis Trevelyan "knows he is right" about his young wife's lack of faithfulness. This is~a long and detailed study of the gradual falling into madness of a suspicious husband... The final stages of his mental and moral dilapidation have a wild affliction unusual in the controlled world of Trollope characters. [Sadleir]~The publisher Virtue gave Trollope extremely generous terms in order to be able to publish this novel -- too generous: Virtue "went under" after the 29th part, after which Strahan & Co. picked up the remainder. (Hence the lack of inserted ads in the last three numbers, Strahan's name on those three inside-rear wrappers, and Strahan's name on the book title pages included in the last part.)~Included are 32 plates by Marcus Stone (one per part), and, at the end of the final part, the preliminary leaves for both volumes -- for those buyers who wanted to have their parts bound up. All ads specified by Sadleir are present (including the rather chaotic assortment of preliminary ads in Parts 21 through 25, when "Virtue was too flustered with commercial misfortune to prolong accurate advertising").~Condition overall is very good-plus: actually, Parts 2 through 31 are just about fine, but (as is often the case) the first part and last part show some edge-wear, especially at the spines. In all, this is quite a nice set of one of the eight Trollope novels that were serialized in parts. Sadleir 31 (pp 92-103). Housed in a handsome morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.

Congres international des echecs. Compte rendu du congres de 1867 et des congres d'echecs anterieurs

Paris: Imprimerie Generale de Ch. Lahure, 1868 xcii+480+[4 including errata] with diagrams and tables. Octavo (9" x 6) bound in bound in half leather withe raised spine bands and red label in gilt over marbled boards. Included Collection de Problemes by G R Neumann and J Arnous de Riviere. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5194). First edition.World exhibitions became a new phenomenon in the West in the nineteenth century. Scientific and technical progress were shown. Ten World Fairs were organized during the second half of the nineteenth century. Seven times an international chess tournament was part of the event (London 1851, London 1862, Paris 1867, Vienna 1873, Philadelphia 1876, Paris 1878, Paris 1900). Paris, the French capital, was host to a world's fair exhibition in the summer of 1867. Among the enormous buildings erected to house new developments in science, technology (of which the Krupp Cannon was the most impressive display), and art, a master chess tournament was organized from June 4th to July 11th. It was held at the Grand Cercle, 10 boulevard Montmartre, not far from the 1.2 kilometer row of machinery for the exhibition, the third tournament. Thirteen chess masters were invited to participate in double rounds, with a time limit of six minutes per move and draws counting as zero for both players. The participants included Ignat Von Kolisch from the Austrio-Hungarian empire, Wilhelm Steinitz and Sam Loyd playing on behalf of the United States of America, Symon Winawer and Hieronim Czarnowski from Poland, Gustav Neumann from Germany, Cecil Valentine De Vere from England, Jules De Riviere, Samuel Rosenthal, Emile D'Andre, and Eugene Rousseau from France, Celso Golmayo Zupide from Cuba, and Martin Severin From from Denmark. There was no formal organization to international events at the time, so beyond the matches and time controls being set, players seemingly encountered one another during the tournament according to availability and inclination. The prize purse was distributed among the top six finishers, with Kolisch earning 5000 Francs for first place, Winawer 2500 Francs for second, Steinitz 2000 Francs for third, Neumann and De Vere 1500 Francs each for fourth and fifth places, and De Riviere 1000 Francs for sixth. The top four finishers also received a Sevres vase as an additional prize. Kolisch immediately liquidated his antique porcelain and invested in real estate which soon made him an extremely wealthy man, allowing him to be a generous patron to chess for decades afterwards. The problem tournament conducted during this event was won by Conrad Bayer ahead of Samuel Loyd. The first public women's chess was also played during this exhibition.Condition:Rebound in period leather and boards. Closed tear at page 65, previous owner's name to front end paper else a very good to fine copy.
