Autograph memorandum. No place, [c. 1868].

1868. 8vo (206 x 134 mm). 3 pp. on a single bifolium. Autograph memorandum, bearing instructions for the preparation of the map appearing in his "Saint Paul" (1869), the third (and arguably best) part of Renan's "Histoire des origines du christianisme", the magnum opus which had begun in 1863 with "Vie de Jésus" and became a succès de scandale. Published by Michel Lévy Frères in 1869, "Saint Paul" contained the fruits of the journey Renan made with his wife Cornélie Scheffer following in the footsteps of the historical Paul. It also contained a detailed map with coloured itineraries of each of the journeys. The present memorandum provides the colour-coding for each of these, together with no less than 33 amendments to the details of the map. - Offered with a carte de visite of the architect Edmond Guillaume (1826-94) with Renan's autograph pencil notes to verso giving directions to his house in Sèvres (tipped to paper mount) and a letter (20 May 1893) from Noémie Psichari, Renan's daughter. - Provenance: Von Scholl collection.

Lieutenant Colonel Viktor Ernst Rudolph von Scheliha, a Prussian, served as Chief of Staff to General Buckner and acted also later as Chief Engineer of the Department of the Gulf, at Mobile. An English Officer, Captain Fitzgerald Ross, met him there in February 1864: "The Colonel is engaged in erecting a new line of forts round Mobile, which are perfect models of strength and judicious arrangements. They are built entirely of sand, with revetments of turf along. The turf on the embankments is fastened down to the sand by slips of the Cherokee rose,an exceedingly prickly shrub, which when grown will become a very disagreeable obstacle to a storming party. Mobile will soon be one of the mostly strongly fortified places in the world." (See: Mahin: "The Blessed Place of Freedom: Europeans in Civil War America" 2002; Lonn: "Foreigners in the Confederacy" 1940, reprinted 2002; Tidwell: "Come Retribution: The Confederate Secret Service and the Assassination of Lincoln" 2001). In his heart, Scheliha remained a Prussian: "Treatise on Coast-Defence" is humbly dedicated to Prince Adelbert of Prussia.

There is a little rubbing, and one or two very small wormholes, but these are almost indistinguishable. The printing is of excellent quality and the colours bright. Text in Japanese.         Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

London: Macmillan & Co., 1868 - PRESENTATION COPY. 1 vol., thirteenth thousand. illustrated by Tenniel, inscribed by Dodgson in black ink on the half-title "John Proctor, Esq/ from the Author/ Oct. 1868". Bound in the publisher's gilt stamped red cloth, spine relined, spine and covers a bit grubby, corners rubbed, dark green pastedowns and endpapers, all edges gilt, Burn binders ticket to rear pastedown, some minor thumbing/soiling to a few pages, not as bad as it may sound. In political caricature John Tenniel remained the leading artist of his day. Proctor was a political cartoonist, working profusely for ¿Judy¿ and later ¿Fun¿. A capable critic expressed his opinion that Proctor¿s work was superior to Tenniel¿s John (Puck) Proctor was mentioned as an artist approached by Dodgson to illustrate "Through the Looking-Glass" after Tenniel's initial refusal (he finally relented). There is a letter from Proctor to Dodgson (Carroll) turning down the offer in the Dodgson Family archives. On 8 April 1868: Carroll reported Tenniel¿s warning that there was ¿no chance of his being able to do pictures for me until the year after next, if then. I must now try Noel Paton.¿ On 19 May 1868: Noel Paton urged Carroll to persist with Tenniel. So did Ruskin. On 18 June 1868: Tenniel finally made what Carroll described as a ¿kind of offer to do the pictures (at such spare time as he can find)". This presentation copy of Alice we assume to be a form of consolation or thank you to Proctor. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Monogrammvignette.

English publisher John Camden Hotten was known for publishing sometimes scandalous literature and he published two of Whitman's books, this being the first. He engaged William Michael Rossetti to edit and expurgate Leaves of Grass, which was accomplished with Whitman's permission. However, Whitman refused to have it published -- expurgated -- as Leaves of Grass, an insisted it be called simply Poems by Walt Whitman. An attractive copy in BAL 21401 Binding D, in blue cloth, with sides blind-stamped with a double rule, and brown-coated endpapers. Bright, and with no marks in the book. (BAL 21401; Myerson C I.I; LeMaster, "Walt Whitman: An Encyclopedia", p. 282.).

Class B. - Correspondence with British ministers and agents in foreign countries, and with foreign ministers in England, relating to the Slave Trade. From January 1 to December 31, 1868. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of Her Majesty. 1869. [4131-I]. London, Harrison and Sons, 1869.

1868. Folio. VI, 86 pp. Top edge gilt. Sewn. Rare British parliamentary papers and correspondence with local agents on the slave trade, including accounts of the extent to which many Arabs of the Gulf involved themselves in slavery in spite of their rulers having entered into agreements prohibiting such an activity: "[T]he Northern Arabs repair to the East Coast of Africa with no other motive than that of running slaves to the Persian Gulf [...] It is a known fact, that not one out of a hundred dhows that come here from the Persian Gulf, comes for any other purpose than to carry a cargo of slaves stolen from the inhabitants of Zanzibar" (p. 75). "These Sheikhs [on the Arabian coast line], who are all, more or less, bound to observe the Treaties, [...] allow the dhows to land the slaves they have succeeded in smuggling out of the Sultan's dominions [...] Could not the Sultan of Oman and the other Chiefs of the Persian Gulf be induced to issue orders calculated to prevent their subjects from carrying on this Trade?" (p. 73f.). - Disbound from a volume of parliamentary papers. Some leaves loosened, but on the whole a good copy. Wilson p. 210.

(Br. v. 20.         Historical Memorials of Westminster Abbey

1868. Historical Memorials of Westminster AbbeyWith a Fore-Edge Painting of the Abbey[FORE-EDGE PAINTING]. STANLEY, Arthur Penrhyn. Historical Memorials of Westminster Abbey. Second and revised edition. London: John Murray, 1868. Octavo (8 1/8 x 5 1/4 inches; 207 x 134 mm.). lv, [i, errata], 632 pp. Inserted frontispiece and several illustrations and diagrams throughout the text.Bound ca. 1901 in full green morocco, covers elaborately bordered in gilt, spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. Spine very slightly sunned, otherwise fine. With a later fore-edge painting beneath the gilt showing Westminster Abbey.Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (1815-1881) was an English churchman, Dean of Westminster, known as Dean Stanley. His position was that of a Broad Churchman and he was the author of works on Church History. Stanley was a candidate to succeed as Archbishop of Dublin following the death of Richard Whately in October 1863, but was rejected by the Church of Ireland. Richard Chenevix Trench, the Dean of Westminster, was appointed instead, and towards the close of 1863 Stanley was appointed by the Crown to the newly vacated deanery. In December he married Lady Augusta Bruce, sister of Lord Elgin, then governor-general of India. His tenure of the deanery of Westminster was memorable in many ways. He recognized from the first two important disqualifications - his indifference to music and his slight knowledge of architecture. On both these subjects he availed himself largely of the aid of others, and threw himself with characteristic energy and entire success into the task of rescuing from neglect and preserving from decay the treasure of historic monuments in which Westminster Abbey is so rich. In 1865 he published his Memorials of Westminster Abbey, a work which, despite occasional inaccuracies, is a mine of information.

np 1868 or 9], [Tuscaloosa, AL ? - Small broadsheet. 23 by 16cm. Lightly creased from folding, a few small browned spots, and one small hole at a fold affecting one or two letters, else a very good copy. The notice gives the regulations for admitting private or paying patients, and also states a bond of $500 would be needed. This particular copy shows a pencilled filing date on the bond of "28 February 1870." Admission of indigent patients was to be approved by a Probate Judge. Planned under the directions of Dorthea Dix and Thomas Kirkbride, designed by Samuel Sloan, architect, the hospital was the most enlightened facility of its kind when it opened in 1861. Dorthea Dix brought Dr. Peter Bryce of South Carolina to the attention of the Trustees of the hospital. He would become the first Superindentent, and the hospital was later renamed for him. Under him it implemented a program that was highly esteemed and deemed sucessful in reaching and helping those in its care, even by today's standards. Patients were engaged in various activities, some providing their food through farming the over 2000 acres maintained by the facility. Straitjackets were discouraged and finally abandoned, evaluations took place on a regular basis. No listings found on OCLC.
