The Yosemite Book; A Description of the Yosemite Valley and the Adjacent Region of the Sierra Nevada, and of the Big Trees of California...

New York: Julius Bien, 1868. Large quarto. 116pp. plus twenty-eight mounted albumen photographs, each 6 x 8 inches, and two folding maps. Repairs to maps, text moderately foxed in places, photo mounts lightly so, but the photos themselves clean and bright. Three-quarter morocco, publisher's green cloth, title stamped in gilt on front board, neatly re-backed, with original gilt morocco spine preserved, gilt edgesTwenty-eight Mounted Photographs of YosemiteAn important photographically illustrated piece of Western Americana, containing twenty-eight original albumen photographs, the first twenty-four produced by Carleton T. Watkins in 1866 and the final four by W. Harris the following year. The Yosemite Book ... was assembled by the office of the California State Geologist, headed by J.D. Whitney. The text was based mainly on the field survey work done by Clarence King in the 1866 season, supplemented with material from other sources. The whole was intended as a lavish guide to Yosemite. Only 250 copies were issued with photographs, as in the present copy. The rest were done on a smaller format to serve more practically as a guide book. The maps are the best of the Yosemite region produced up to that time. Whitney was justifiably proud of the work, which appeared early in 1869, although completed in December 1868. Currey & Kruska conclude that it is "one of the major contributions to Sierra Nevada literature."This work is now scarce. It was notably absent from the DeGolyer Library exhibition devoted to photographically illustrated western books (although it is listed in the appendix). Important and visually impressive.Cowan, p.699; Currey & Kruska, Yosemite Bibliography 60; Farquhar 7a; Graff 4646; Howell 50:929; Howes W389, "aa"; Kurutz, California Books Illustrated with Original Photographs 88; ROCQ 5170; Truthful Lens 896; Zamorano Select 32.

        Idylls of the King

London: Edward Moxon & Co.,, 1868. With A Double 'Erotic' Fore-Edge PaintingBound by Thomas Kerslake of Bristol[FORE-EDGE PAINTING]. TENNYSON, Alfred, Lord. Idylls of the King. A New Edition. London: Edward Moxon & Co., 1868. Small octavo (6 3/8 x 4 inches; 162 x 101 mm.). viii, 261, (1, blank) pp. Bound by T. Kerslake & Co. Bristol (stamp-signed on verso of front end-paper). Full dark blue hard-grain morocco, front cover double ruled in blind with small gilt corner-pieces, surrounding an elaborate central strapwork design in gilt with orange-red onlays. Rear cover double ruled in blind with small gilt corner-pieces, spine with five raised bands, decoratively ruled in gilt and blind, four compartments with small onlaid red morocco flowers outlined in gilt, the remaining panel lettered in gilt, gilt board-edges and decorative gilt turn-ins, marbled end-papers, all edges gilt. With a later double fore-edge painting beneath the gilt showing two 'erotic' scenes. This edition of Idylls of the King, contains four of the narrative poems, Enid, Vivien, Elaine & Guinevere, by the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892; Poet Laureate from 1850). They retell the legend of King Arthur, his knights, his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him, and the rise and fall of Arthur's kingdom. The individual poems detail the deeds of various knights, including Lancelot, Geraint, and also Merlin and the Lady of the Lake. There is little transition between Idylls, but the central figure of Arthur links all the stories. The poems were dedicated to the late Albert, Prince Consort. The Idylls are written in blank verse. Tennyson's descriptions of nature are derived from observations of his own surroundings, collected over the course of many years. The dramatic narratives are not an epic either in structure or tone, but derive elegiac sadness in the style of the idylls of Theocritus. Idylls of the King is often read as an allegory of the societal conflicts in Britain during the mid-Victorian era.Thomas Kerslake (1812-1891) was an English bookseller, bookbinder and antiquarian. In 1828 he moved from Exteter to Bristol, and soon afterwards commenced business in second-hand bookselling in Barton Alley, together with his brother-in-law, Samuel Cornish. In 1830 the partnership was dissolved, and Kerslake removed to a shop at the bottom of Park Street. A disastrous fire occurred here in 1860. Kerslake continued on the same site however, until 1870, when he removed to Queen's Road, and shortly afterwards retired. For over twenty years after his retirement he devoted himself to antiquarian controversy.

Brushwork Studies of Flowers, Fruits and Animals for Teachers and Advanced Students.

Oblong Quarto. Coloured frontispiece, 11 pages of text and XXVII plates with explanations. Original Hardcover (green cloth with lettering to spine and cover). Extraordinarily excellent (Near Mint) condition with barely any signs of wear. Wonderful and rare publication ! Elizabeth Corbet Yeats (11 March 1868 16 January 1940), known as Lolly, was born at 23 Fitzroy Road, London. She was the daughter of the Irish artist John Butler Yeats and sister of W. B., Jack and Susan Mary "Lily" Yeats. She trained and worked as an art teacher and was a member of William Morris's circle in London before her family returned to Dublin in 1900. Yeats wrote and created the artwork for "Elementary Brush-Work Studies" (published in 1900), an educational book that teaches young children the technique of painting flowers and plants using her simple method. At the suggestion of Emery Walker, who worked with Morris on the Kelmscott Press, Yeats studied printing with the Women's Printing Society in London. In Dublin, she accepted the invitation to join Evelyn Gleeson to form the Dun Emer Guild along with Lily, who was an embroiderer. Yeats managed the Dun Emer Press from 1902. The Press was located at Runnymede, the house of Evelyn Gleeson. (This house, located in Dundrum, was later renamed Dun Emer. It has since been demolished.) This was set up with the intention of training young women in bookbinding and printing. In 1908, she and her brother William started the Cuala Press, publishing over 70 books including 48 by the poet. Yeats was the first commercial printer in Ireland to work exclusively with hand presses. (Wikipedia)

        Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

London: Macmillan & Co., 1868, 1868. PRESENTATION COPY. 1 vol., thirteenth thousand. illustrated by Tenniel, inscribed by Dodgson in black ink on the half-title "John Proctor, Esq/ from the Author/ Oct. 1868". Bound in the publisher's gilt stamped red cloth, spine relined, spine and covers a bit grubby, corners rubbed, dark green pastedowns and endpapers, all edges gilt, Burn binders ticket to rear pastedown, some minor thumbing/soiling to a few pages, not as bad as it may sound. In political caricature John Tenniel remained the leading artist of his day. Proctor was a political cartoonist, working profusely for "Judy" and later "Fun". A capable critic expressed his opinion that Proctor's work was superior to Tenniel's John (Puck) Proctor was mentioned as an artist approached by Dodgson to illustrate "Through the Looking-Glass" after Tenniel's initial refusal (he finally relented). There is a letter from Proctor to Dodgson (Carroll) turning down the offer in the Dodgson Family archives. On 8 April 1868: Carroll reported Tenniel's warning that there was 'no chance of his being able to do pictures for me until the year after next, if then. I must now try Noel Paton.' On 19 May 1868: Noel Paton urged Carroll to persist with Tenniel. So did Ruskin. On 18 June 1868: Tenniel finally made what Carroll described as a 'kind of offer to do the pictures (at such spare time as he can find)". This presentation copy of Alice we assume to be a form of consolation or thank you to Proctor.

General Grants election has brought such actual Peace, that there is not a part of a peg even, to hang an excitement on"

Annapolis, Maryland 1868 - Autograph Letter, to an unnamed general. Annapolis, Maryland, December 8, 1868. 2 pp., quarto. Sherman originally wrote this content as part of a longer letter; he marked this leaf "copy" and ends it with marks that show this section to be complete. Sherman turns down an invitation to a "Grand Reunion of the Western Armies at Chicago." Complete TranscriptCopy U.S. Naval Academy Annapolis Md. Dec 8, 1868Dear General, I had already received an invitation to the Grand Review of the Western Armies at Chicago, when I received your letter of Dec 2. I am however too unwell to go any where, and am now under the care of a physician who has put me under a certain course of treatment that I have to comply with. I assure you that I would be most happy to witness your Reunion which I expect will be a very pleasant affair, and I should be much pleased to meet there, the officers of the army with whom I have been at different times associated. I would not be surprised if this were the last meeting held by your Association, as General Grants election has brought such actual Peace, that there is not a part of a peg even, to hang an excitement on. Your old Army Corps will in the next four years have almost forgotten that there has been any thing like war, and the members devoting themselves to money making pursuits, will be unable to attend these meetings as they have done heretofore. Perhaps it is just as well that it should be so, and that there should be nothing to remind us of the strife through which we have passed. x x x x x x xHistorical BackgroundThe election of 1868, which saw Grant as the Republican candidate, was the first post- Civil War election. The Republican campaign theme - "Let us have peace"- was taken from Grant's letter of acceptance. After four years of war, three years of wrangling over Reconstruction, and the impeachment of President Johnson, the nation craved the peace Grant pledged to achieve. Johnson was so unpopular that he failed to secure the Democratic party nomination, which instead nominated Horatio Seymour against the wildly popular (at least in the North and among the Freedmen) hero of Appomattox, Ulysses S. Grant.William T. Sherman (1820-1891), a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran, served as a corps commander under General Grant in successful campaigns down the Mississippi and in Tennessee. He then took command of the western armies when Grant was reassigned to the Virginia theatre. He was both recognized and criticized for his tactics of "scorched earth" and "total war," evidenced by his capture of Atlanta and "March to the Sea" through Georgia. He followed this feat by a swift campaign north through the Carolinas to force the surrender of the last major Confederate army. Sherman served as Commanding General of the U.S. Army from 1869-1883, during a period of Westward expansion and Indian Wars.

Group of Four Labor Contracts for Chinese Immigrant Workers.

1868. Setting the Terms for Coolie Labor in Cuba [Cuba]. ["Coolie" Labor]. [Group of Four Labor Contracts for Chinese Immigrant Workers]. [Havana], 1868-1869. Part-printed documents, three 8-1/2" x 12," one 8-1/2" x 13." Two have some toning, the other two browned. Faint horizontal fold lines, a few worm holes, some wear and chipping to edges. Each contract endorsed with a stamped or embossed seal. * These immigration contracts for indentured Chinese "coolie" laborers are valuable sources of information. They outline the duration of the contract, the nature of the work, the hours to be worked per day, payment and special considerations. They are signed by witnesses for the workers; three of these are signed in Chinese characters. In the mid-nineteenth century, Cuban agents supplemented the slave population with thousands of Chinese indentured laborers. They were needed to build railroads and work on sugar plantations. Most contracts granted free Cuban citizenship to workers when they satisfied the term of their contracts. Several remained in Cuba. And by the end of the nineteenth century Havana had the largest Chinatown in Latin America.

Autor: Claudia Kromrei, geb. 1969, Studium der Architektur in Berlin und Zürich, Mitarbeit als Architektin bei Prof. Axel Schultes und Prof. Klaus Theo Brenner, Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeit am Institut für Architektur der TU Berlin, 2009 Promotion bei Prof. Neumeyer ebenda. Forschungsschwerpunkt auf der städtischen Wohnhausarchitektur des 20. Jahrhunderts, derzeit Post-Doc an der TU Berlin.

Lieutenant Colonel Viktor Ernst Rudolph von Scheliha, a Prussian, served as Chief of Staff to General Buckner and acted also later as Chief Engineer of the Department of the Gulf, at Mobile. An English Officer, Captain Fitzgerald Ross, met him there in February 1864: “The Colonel is engaged in erecting a new line of forts round Mobile, which are perfect models of strength and judicious arrangements. They are built entirely of sand, with revetments of turf along. The turf on the embankments is fastened down to the sand by slips of the Cherokee rose,an exceedingly prickly shrub, which when grown will become a very disagreeable obstacle to a storming party. Mobile will soon be one of the mostly strongly fortified places in the world.” (See: Mahin: “The Blessed Place of Freedom: Europeans in Civil War America” 2002; Lonn: “Foreigners in the Confederacy” 1940, reprinted 2002; Tidwell: “Come Retribution: The Confederate Secret Service and the Assassination of Lincoln” 2001). & Louis Marchand [...] Japanese Game Board "Puzzle for Navigating or Wandering the World / Navigation et Prominade der Morde (sic) "

, 1868. 1868. Otherwise very good condition. A geographical board game created in Japan during the Meiji period when the Emperor was opening Japanese society to Western influences. Roughly translated the Japanese title is, "Countries by Cruise Ship." The game starts with the key in the lower center of the board, with six circles which correspond to color coded regions of the world; Asia (yellow); Europe (red); North America (blue); South America (yellow); Africa (red); Australia (blue). It culminates in the top margin at Mount Fuji. There are 100 squares in 8 rows on the board, and each box within the row has an associated image and text in Japanese; some images correspond with the landscape of the destination - others are quite imaginary. Besides landscapes, there are many birds and animals (elephant, monkey, oxen, antelope, camel), ships and flags. There are soldiers, bathers, a man reading in a chair, Tartars and some Westerners. The indigenous people at the North Pole are wearing only loin cloths, sitting next to a fire. The title appears in three different languages at the right border of the game, first in French "Navigation et prominade der Morde" (sic), then in English, "Puzzle for Navigating or Wandering the World", then in Japanese. Further down on right margin are instructions for playing (in Japanese)- 'Roll dice' and 'How to play', 'New Year's Day - Yokahama', 'January 1868', 'New edition' and possibly the name of the creator of the game. Above the image in the each box is a series of numbers and names which correspond to the number of days it takes to sail to a location.
