        206 ORIGINAL PAINTINGS

      19. Very Good. [DESIGNS FOR SATSUMA WARE] KINKOZAN. 206 ORIGINAL PAINTINGS. A large portfolio of manuscript images, some 205 approximately 29 x 19.5 cm., and one large folded image about twice that size that is stamped with the seal of the important Kyoto ceramic house Kinkozan. Skillfully done throughout in opaque watercolor, white gofun, metallic and mineral pigments, the drawings capture the complex and intricate patterns of 19th century Kyoto Satsuma ware as designed by perhaps its finest interpreter. Kinkozan Sobei VII (1868-1927) and his studio of some 250 potters, who were the largest producers of Satsuma style wares in Meiji Japan, and among the most skilled. This wonderful group of images illustrates the three dimensional quality of the designs where necessary as they wrap around the pot. They are as lavishly and meticulously achieved as the pots themselves. Many of the drawings have(stock?) numbers as well. This group of drawings could form the basis of an important work of exploration of Kinkozan and the Kyoto potters in the late 19th century. Are there examples of these wonderful designs existing in museums and collections around the world? Were these simply a record of designs as they were produced or were they a "sample book" for orders? In very good condition, the drawings are enclosed in a folding clasped chitsu case.

Travels in the Interior of South Africa, Comprising Fifteen Years' Hunting and Trading. With Journeys Across the Continent from Natal to Walvish Bay, and Visits to Lake Ngami and the Victoria Falls

London: Bell & Daldy, 1868. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Two-volume set. xiii (4), 454, (2); viii, (4), 480pp. With 2 frontispieces, 25 woodcut illustrations and 2 folding maps. Bound by John Bumpus, Oxford. Chapman (b. 1831 in Cape Town) traveled extensively in the interior of southern Africa as a trader, hunter, and explorer. In 1853, he reached the Zambezi and narrowly missed discovering Victoria Falls before David Livingstone. This work describes his second expedition to the Zambezi (1860-64), during which he and fellow explorer and artist Thomas Baines hoped to conduct a full examination of the middle and lower reaches of the river to assess its navigability and viability as a commercial route. They traveled from Cape Town to Walvis Bay by sea, then by ox-wagon across the Kalahari, taking 16 months to reach the Zambezi . Thomas Baines spent several days sketching and painting Victoria Falls, providing the first images of the natural wonder to reach the outside world. Although the expedition was hindered by illness and failed to reach the river's mouth, it was successful in gathering information about previously little-known terrain-in part because it was one of the first expeditions to carry a stereoscopic camera. More than 140 of Chapman's photographic studies of the landscape and wildlife of what is now Namibia were shown at the 1867 World Exposition in Paris. Mendelssohn p. 321 says that "few South African books give better descriptions of the sport of the country and the habits and customs of the native races inhabiting the vast areas traversed. See also Czech, p. 61. Leather scuffed at the extremities. One map backed in linen, the other torn and reparied along a fold, but complete and easily repaired. Overall quite clean and sound.

Flore illustrée de Nice et des Alpes-Maritimes.

Iconographie des Orchidées. Nice, Caisson et Mignon, 1868. Folio (356 x 270mm). pp. (8), 83, (3), with 63 handcoloured lithographed plates. Contemporary calf, gilt ornamented spine, sides with gilt borders and blind pressed cornerpieces, gilt edges. The work is dedicated to the Italian botanist Philippe Parlatore. The present copy is an interesting association copy as it was presented by Parlatore to lady Berta Sommier. The fine plates were drawn by Barla, who was director of the natural history museum at Nice. He was a man of independent means and dedicated himself to investigate the fungi and orchids of the South of France. This work on the orchids of the South of France is much rarer than the author's works on fungi and was published in a small edition only. "Cette végétation exceptionelle, doit évidemment sa richesse et sa variété à la configuration topographique, toute particulière, du bassin des Alpes-Maritimes. Dans ce pays favorisé par la nature, croissent la plupart des orchidées de France, d'Italie, d'Allemange, etc." (From the Introduction). Nissen BBI, 78; Stafleu & Cowan Suppl. I, 20.221.

Maxwell's next step after completing the dynamical analogy was to develop a group of eight equations describing the electromagnetic field... Maxwell remarked that the equations might be condensed, but "to eliminate a quantity which expresses a useful idea would be rather a loss than a gain in this stage of the enquiry". He had, in fact, simplified the equations in his fifth major paper, the short but important "Note on the Electromagnetic Theory of Light", writing them in an integral form without the function A, based on four postulates from electrical experiments.         On Discontinuous Movements of Fluids

Taylor and Francis London: Taylor and Francis. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, in original wrappers, of what is generally recognized as the earliest paper on hydrodynamic stability. Preceded by the printing in German of the same year. "In 1868 Helmholtz published a paper on what happens along the contact surface of two infinitely extended fluids if the one moves relative to the other. In that publication, 'Uber dickontinuirliche Flussigkeits-Bewegungen,' [On discontinuous fluid motions], he pointed out that if a water jet issues from a sharp-edged orifice into a tank filled with water, a discontinuity in the velocity distribution is observed at the edge of the orifice. In is view, in a non-viscous fluid a whole surface of discontinuity separating the jet from the surrounding quiescent water can be assumed. Even though Helmholtz had doubts as to the stability of such a surface of discontinuity, he suggested that such a region of irrotational flow bordered by surfaces across which the velocity, but not the pressure, suffers a discontinuous change, should be investigated. The challenge was met by Lord Kelvin... [It] had a pivotal influence... Helmholtz-Kelvin instability, as it came to be known, became an active topic for research among theoretical fluid dynamicists over the following century" (Pasipoularides, Herat's Vortex: Intracardiac Blood Flow Phenomena).IN: The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine, Fourth Series, No. 244, November 1868, pp. 337-348. Octavo, original printed wrappers. Wrappers with light soiling and mild wear to spine and edges. Rare in original wrappers.

The preface is sign with the initial C.P. and dated from "Old Lands, Uckfield, April 17th, 1868]. This is the first appearance of what was to become Patmore's most important work and a great influence on a whole generation of later writers, notably Gerard Manley Hopkins. Only 250 copies were printed for distribution among his friends but as he came to revise and extend the collection he became dissatisfied with the originals and is reported to have gathered up and destroyed over 100 copies. Revised and expanded versions were republished in 1877, 1878, 1879, and 1886. The Oblates of St. Charles, Bayswater was a community founded and presided over by Cardinal Manning in 1857. Patmore became a convert to Catholicism in 1864 and presumably presented this copy to Cardinal Manning in 1868, but in any case before dissatisfaction set in.

Author's presentation inscription to top of front wrapper: "Prof Tyndall / With the author's / kind Compliments". Soiling to front wrappers and nicks throughout, not affecting text. Internally clean. Pp. 8.. Exceedingly scarce offprint, with the author's most interesting presentation inscription to Professor John Tyndall, the father of the Greenhouse Effect, heat radiation and global climate research, in which Herschel promotes the role of the devine in the natural order. Herschel, now famous for originating the use of the Julian day system in astronomy, naming seven moons of Saturn and four moons of Uranus, his investigation in colour blindness and the chemical power of ultraviolet rays, did much to promote the public understanding of science, the present paper being one of his most widely read and popular works: "During his life John was immensely celebrated, his name epitomizing science to the public, much as that of Einstein did in the next century." (DSB)Though intended for a popular audience "On the Origin of Force" is one of the most important sources for understanding Herschel's general approach to science. A contemporary review of the paper states: "The article is well worth reading for those who wish to realise the enormous benefit which has been rendered to science by banishing the indefinite uee of the word force and by introducing the term energy, restricting the use of force to the meaning attached to itBy Newton. Sir John Herschel still speaks of the "conservation of force" (as did likewise Helmholtz, who, however, very early introduces the term Arheitskraft, power to do work, thusRemoving all ambiguity).Herschel and Tyndall corresponded throughout their mature lives and they shared an overall view on God's place in science, Herschel: "In the only case in which we are admitted into any personal knowledge of the origin of force, we find it connected (possibly by intermediate links untraceable by our faculties, but yet indubitably connected) with volition, and by inevitable consequence with motive, with intellect, and with all the attributes of mind in which-and not in the possession of arms, legs, brains, and viscera-personality consists." (From the present paper). Tyndall agreed in stating that: "An inscrutable power of which we know no more than job did, when he said, 'Can man by searching find this power out?'. (Tyndall's "Belfast Address)

Autograph letter signed to Latimer Clark

1868. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Tait, Peter Guthrie (1831-1901). Autograph letter signed to [Josiah] Latimer Clark (1822-98). Edinburgh, July 27, 1868. 2 pp. 178 x 114 mm. Remains of mounting on blank verso of last page. Very good. From mathematician and physicist Peter Guthrie Tait, professor of natural philosophy at Edinburgh and co-author (with William Thomson) of the classic Treatise on Natural Philosophy (1867), a work that helped to define the modern discipline of physics. Tait's correspondent, Latimer Clark, was an electrical engineer and pioneer in submarine telegraphy; he worked on the Atlantic cable and in 1868 founded the company of Clark, Forde and Taylor, one of the leading submarine cable-laying firms of the nineteenth century. Clark was also an enthusiastic bibliophile, amassing an impressive library of nearly six thousand works on electricity and magnetism documented in the Catalogue of the Wheeler Gift (1909). Tait's letter, regarding the ordering of some mechanical apparatus from Clark, reads in part as follows: "Not being able to come to London myself, I asked my colleague Prof. Jenkin to report upon the apparatus you offer m. His report is, on the whole, satisfactory-but I am not quite sure about the Willis' Mech. Powers-will the wood stand the climate? If so, I must have them. Will you give me an estimate of the charge for packing (very securely) the whole collection? The expense of insurance and of carriage will be borne by the Madras govt. people . . . "Prof. Jenkin" refers to Fleeming Jenkin (1833-85), professor of engineering at the University of Edinburgh and a collaborator with Clark and William Thomson on the Atlantic cable and other important submarine telegraphy ventures.         Teoria fondamentale degli spazii di curvatura constante.Milano: Giuseppe Bernardoni, 1868. First edition.

A key paper in the history of non-Euclidean geometry; in which Beltrami established the fundamental connection between Riemann's differential geometry and the hyperbolic geometries of Lobachevsky and Bolyai. In this paper Betrami demonstrated that the hyperbolic spaces of Lobachevsky and Bolyai are just particular Riemannian manifolds with constant negative curvature - a turning point in the general acceptance of non-Euclidean geometry. Beltrami's work set the scheme for the later unifications of geometries by Felix Klein and Henri Poincaré. </br></br> Two papers appeared in 1868 by Beltrami on the interpretation of non-Euclidean geometry, i.e., first his 'Saggio di interpretazione della geometria non-euclidea' and then the offered paper on 'The fundamental theory of spaces of constant curvature'. In his 'Saggio' Beltrami gave an important model of Lobachevsky's imaginary plane; His discoveries originated from the classical cartographic problem of how to make a plane map of a curved surface. More specifically how does one construct a one-to-one correspondence between geodesics of the surface and straight lines in the plane (geodesics are lines on the surface which constitute the shortest path between two points, e.g., geodesics in the plane are straight lines). Beltrami showed that such mappings are possible only when the curvature of the surface is constant. His main discovery in his 'Saggio' was that when mapping geodesics of a surface with constant negative curvature (a surface which Beltrami coined a 'pseudo-sphere') onto the plane one does not get the ordinary Euclidean geometry in two dimensions but Lobachevsky's non-Euclidean 'imaginary' plane. Beltrami initially interpretated this result as a justification of the validity of Lobachevsky's geometry, however as he noted himself, the case of Lobachevsky's three dimensional space could not be treated in the same manner, and as Helmholtz pointed out Beltrami's model only models a finite region of Lobachevsky's plane, and not the whole infinite plane. Beltrami found the solution to this problem after having read Riemann's recently published habilitations paper 'Ueber die Hypothesen welche der Geometrie zu Grunde liegen' (1867). In this famous lecture Riemann generalized Gauss' non-axiomatic description of surfaces and their intrinsic geometry into general n-dimensional space (the Riemannian manifold). Riemann had in his lecture himself discussed manifolds with constant positive curvature (i.e., elliptic geometry) but had not seen the link between Lobachevsky's hyperbolic geometry and his theory of manifolds. This key insight was first established by Beltrami in his 'Teoria fondamentale degli spazii di curvatura constante' (the offered paper) in which Beltrami was the first to identify Lobachevsky's plane and Lobachevsky's space with Riemannian manifolds of constant negative curvature of dimensions 2 and 3 correspondingly. Beltrami's result was an important factor in the rapid developments which took place, during the next decades, on the geometries of Lobachevky and Bolyai, and formed the foundation for Felix Klein's important unifications of these with projective and affine geometry.. In: Annali di matematica pura ed aplicata, series 2, volume 2, pp. 232-255. The complete volume offered in contemporary half calf. (4), 348 pp
