Joss House on Black Rock, East Point, Hong Kong.

HONG KONG 1868 - Albumen print, card mount. 8 ¾ x 11 ¾. This is an excellent early photograph of Lin Fa Kung Temple by William Pryor Floyd. A survey of Floyd?s photographs in the China Mail of August 8, 1868 highlighted this photograph as ?one of the most noteworthy of Floyd?s views of native Chinese architecture.? The Lin Fa Kung Temple was built as a worship place for Kwan Yin, also known as Kwun Yam, the goddess of mercy during the Qing Dynasty in the southeast area of Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Legend says that Kwun Yam was once seen presenting herself on Lotus Rock so worshippers built the temple near the rock to praise the goddess of mercy. Traditional festivals still take place at the Lin Fa Kung Temple including the Zhongqiu Festival. In the 19th century the people of Tai Hang began preforming the spectacular ?Fire Dragon Dance? during the festival to end a run of misfortune afflicting their village. To this day the tradition continues. A huge dragon made from straw and covered with burning incense sticks dances for three days and three nights accompanied by drummers and firecrackers. This is a superb early photograph of one of Hong Kong?s prized temples before unique architectural elements were lost during renovations.

1).         Antarctic Mariner’s Song

NY, 1868. prev b/w frontis, plates, vignettes. (2), 92, (2) pp. Twenty-five years after he published his famous “Thulia,” Palmer wrote a second version of his poem about Antarctica, again with handsome engraved illustrations and descriptive notes. This title is even scarcer than the first. In fact, it is a rare book, not often found intact. Rosove states, “Antarctic Mariner’s Song is a far scarcer book than Thulia. Both editions were beautifully bound, but the bindings and paper have stood the test of time poorly; the majority of extant copies are worn or soiled, and the paper is usually foxed, often severely.” (See Spence 891, Rosove 246.B1a.) This copy has some foxing, and the covers show marks of old water staining. The title page has a few erased pencil scrawls and there are old water stains around the edges of some pages. However the gold cover design is still fresh and the gilding on the spine, while sunned, is intact. The book as a whole presents itself better than this list of flaws would indicate.

NUTZLICHES REISEBUCH FUR AMERIKA: UNENTBEHRLICHES TASCHENBUCH FUR AUSWANDERER NACH AMERIKA

Ulm. [n.d., ca. 1868].. Ulm. [n.d., ca. 1868].. [8],224,112pp., plus folding colored frontispiece map. Original printed blue paper boards. Boards rubbed and soiled, spine perished, corners bumped. A few leave tanned, but quite neat internally. A good plus copy. A rare German handbook for emigrants to the United States in the post-Civil War era. It is the second volume, but a complete work in itself, of a series of emigrant's guides. Undated, this volume was published around 1868 (based on internal evidence) at a time when Germans were still the largest European ethnic group immigrating to America. The text covers a variety of essential fields, including travel itineraries, hints on settling, legal questions, money and economics, agriculture, trade, and commerce. Directions are given for emigrating to New York from Bremen and Hamburg, and sketches are given of each of the American states, from Maine to Texas. The second section of the text consists largely of letters from emigrants in various states written in the early 1850s, including from Arkansas, Missouri, California, New York, Philadelphia, Ohio, and more. Thirteen American coins are illustrated, front and back, and there is also a section of vocabulary. The attractive folding frontispiece map, colored in outline, would not have been of great use to an emigrant in the late 1860s, showing, for example, the pre-1848 boundaries of Oregon Territory. We can find no records of copies of Rau's emigrant guide in the market or at auction. OCLC lists only four copies, at the University of Illinois, Bethel College, the Detroit Public Library, and the University of Chicago. OCLC 11639757, 78124310.

An excellent set. First editions, second issues, volume I listing a single erratum and Volume II none. Adverts are dated April 1867 in Volume I, and February 1868 in Volume II. Issued in two volumes demy octavo, Variation Under Domestication is the only Murray Darwin to appear in this larger format. The term "survival of the fittest" (borrowed at Wallace's insistence from Herbert Spencer's 1866 Principles of Biology) first appeared in the Variation (v. 2, p. 89), preceding its first use in the fifth edition of the Origin of Species (1869). The Variation was a full statement of the facts on which the theories of the Origin were based, though leaving aside an account of human evolution for The Descent of Man (1871).

Notes on the Royal Academy Exhibition, 1868

London: John Camden Hotten Piccadilly, (1868) London: John Camden Hotten Piccadilly, (1868). Paperback. Very Good. Paperback. First Edition. Scarce. Written in two parts with the first being by Michael Rossetti and the second by Swinburne. Swinburne's criticism discusses works by Leighton, Millay, Watts, Moore, Whistler, Sandys, D.G. Rossetti, and others. He saves his discussion of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's paintings for last stating that "his work must always hold its place as second in significance and value to no work done by any English painter of his time." Amidst his words of admiration for Dante's latest paintings, he incorporates the first publication of his poems, which the painter had written across the frames of his pieces. The poems included are "Sibylla Palmifera", "Venus Verticordia", and "Lady Lilith." Very good in original cream paper wrappers with black title to front panel. The covers are darkened along the edges with minor soiling and a few spots of foxing. There are a few chips to the spine panel and to the rear corner. The interior is clean overall with a few splits to the binding and a few small spots of foxing on first and last few pages. Housed in a modern green cloth covered slipcase with black leather title label to spine and pull out chemise. 51 pages. PRERAPH/022414.

Erste Ausgabe. - Es erschien im selben Jahr noch eine amerikanische Ausgabe mit einem Vorwort von Asa Gray sowie ein zweiter Abdruck der Erstausgabe in London mit einer zweizeiligen Errataangabe. - Die Arbeit "took up in detail that subject which had been contined to on chapter of the Origin. It contained [Darwin's, 1809-1882] hypothesis of pangenesis, by means of which he tried to frame an explanation of hereditary resemblance, inheritance of acquired characters, atavism, and regeneration. It was a brave attempt to account for a number of phenomena which were beyond the bounds of scientific knowledge in his day, such as fertilization by the union of sperm with egg, the mechanism of chromosomal inheritance, and the development of the embryo by successive cell division His hypothesis of pangenesis could not therefore give a permanently acceptable account of the multitude of phenomena it was designed to explain. It was, however, a point of departure for particulate theories of inheritance in the later 19th century" (DSB).

        Document Signed

Union general in charge of all armies of the United States during the Civil War; eighteenth president of the United States (1868-76). DS, 1p, 10½" X 13½", Galena, IL, n.y. [late 1870s]. Near fine. Faint, even age toning. Handsome example of the well-known "Soldiers Monument Association" certificate, issued to raise funds to construct the soldiers monument that stands today in this historic city in northwest Illinois -- U.S. Grant's adopted hometown. At top is a handsome oval steel-engraved portrait of Abraham Lincoln, surrounded by the American Eagle and U.S. flags. Elaborate typeface text notes that "This Certifies / That / [blank rule] / Is Hereby Constituted / A Member of the / Jo Daviess Soldiers' Monument / Association / Galena, Ill. Aug. 28th 1865." Other small engraved vignettes surround this text show Lady Liberty holding the flag, the U.S. Capitol behind her; Lady Liberty lounging against a cannon and anchor, olive branch in one hand and dove alighted on the other; three lead miners examining ore in a mine ("Galena" being Latin for lead); a Civil War cavalry officer chatting with two blacksmiths as they forge a sword. At lower right, Grant signs boldly as president of this association, while another Union brevet general from Galena, John C. Smith (1832-1910), signs at lower left as secretary. This particular copy was never issued, thus has no recipient's name filled in. Despite the August 28, 1865 date printed on the certificate, this was NOT the date of its issuance; this was the date of the creation of the association. It was only after Grant's presidency, in the late 1870s, that this association got off its duff and made a concerted effort to raise funds to build a monument and created these certificates. This document has been simply but tastefully matted in white and framed in a simple ½" black wood frame (overall dimensions 16½" X 19½").
