Antarctic Mariner’s Song

NY, 1868. NY, 1868. prev b/w frontis, plates, vignettes. (2), 92, (2) pp. Twenty-five years after he published his famous “Thulia,” Palmer wrote a second version of his poem about Antarctica, again with handsome engraved illustrations and descriptive notes. This title is even scarcer than the first. In fact, it is a rare book, not often found intact. Rosove states, “Antarctic Mariner’s Song is a far scarcer book than Thulia. Both editions were beautifully bound, but the bindings and paper have stood the test of time poorly; the majority of extant copies are worn or soiled, and the paper is usually foxed, often severely.” (See Spence 891, Rosove 246.B1a.) This copy has some foxing, and the covers show marks of old water staining. The title page has a few erased pencil scrawls and there are old water stains around the edges of some pages. However the gold cover design is still fresh and the gilding on the spine, while sunned, is intact. The book as a whole presents itself better than this list of flaws would indicate.

Parliamentary Papers (54) relating to the Main Line Railway

Tasmania: Legislative Council, 1868-1890.. Tasmania: Legislative Council. 1868-1890.. Fifty-four Parliamentary Papers concerning the Main Line Railway, laid down between Hobart and Evandale (joining the existing line to Launceston). The collection begins with an 1868 petition from 4154 citizens in favour of the proposed line, followed by the Report of the Royal Commission established to enquire into its feasibility (66pp, last blank; large folding map). Other papers feature correspondence, reports, petitions etc, and the seemingly endless legal dispute between the contractors and the government. A full list of the papers can be supplied on request. ***The Main Line Railway - between Hobart Town and Launceston - was constructed in the 1870s by a private (British) company, with the Tasmanian government undertaking to pay the interest on the required loan (to be offset by a share of the line’s profits), and funding this from general revenue as it was considered to be of benefit to the whole colony. The ratepayers in the districts served by the earlier Launceston and Western line, who had been required to guarantee that project themselves and were now being levied a ‘railway rate’ as a consequence of its difficulties, were unsurprisingly enraged, and soon that burden was also assumed by the government. The Main Line’s development did not go smoothly either; there were problems with the route and returns were less than anticipated, but the chief cause of trouble was a prolonged contractual dispute with the MLR Company which was not fully settled until 1890, when the colony purchased the entire operation. .

Joss House on Black Rock, East Point, Hong Kong.

HONG KONG 1868 - Albumen print, card mount. 8 ¾ x 11 ¾. This is an excellent early photograph of Lin Fa Kung Temple by William Pryor Floyd. A survey of Floyd?s photographs in the China Mail of August 8, 1868 highlighted this photograph as ?one of the most noteworthy of Floyd?s views of native Chinese architecture.? The Lin Fa Kung Temple was built as a worship place for Kwan Yin, also known as Kwun Yam, the goddess of mercy during the Qing Dynasty in the southeast area of Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. Legend says that Kwun Yam was once seen presenting herself on Lotus Rock so worshippers built the temple near the rock to praise the goddess of mercy. Traditional festivals still take place at the Lin Fa Kung Temple including the Zhongqiu Festival. In the 19th century the people of Tai Hang began preforming the spectacular ?Fire Dragon Dance? during the festival to end a run of misfortune afflicting their village. To this day the tradition continues. A huge dragon made from straw and covered with burning incense sticks dances for three days and three nights accompanied by drummers and firecrackers. This is a superb early photograph of one of Hong Kong?s prized temples before unique architectural elements were lost during renovations.

1). Antarctic Mariner’s Song

NY, 1868. prev b/w frontis, plates, vignettes.

Ulm. [n.d., ca. 1868].. Ulm. [n.d., ca. 1868].. [8],224,112pp., plus folding colored frontispiece map. Original printed blue paper boards. Boards rubbed and soiled, spine perished, corners bumped. A few leave tanned, but quite neat internally. A good plus copy. A rare German handbook for emigrants to the United States in the post-Civil War era. It is the second volume, but a complete work in itself, of a series of emigrant's guides. Undated, this volume was published around 1868 (based on internal evidence) at a time when Germans were still the largest European ethnic group immigrating to America. The text covers a variety of essential fields, including travel itineraries, hints on settling, legal questions, money and economics, agriculture, trade, and commerce. Directions are given for emigrating to New York from Bremen and Hamburg, and sketches are given of each of the American states, from Maine to Texas. The second section of the text consists largely of letters from emigrants in various states written in the early 1850s, including from Arkansas, Missouri, California, New York, Philadelphia, Ohio, and more. Thirteen American coins are illustrated, front and back, and there is also a section of vocabulary. The attractive folding frontispiece map, colored in outline, would not have been of great use to an emigrant in the late 1860s, showing, for example, the pre-1848 boundaries of Oregon Territory. We can find no records of copies of Rau's emigrant guide in the market or at auction. OCLC lists only four copies, at the University of Illinois, Bethel College, the Detroit Public Library, and the University of Chicago. OCLC 11639757, 78124310.
