New York: Bradstreet Press. Condition: Good +. Uncommon 1867 catalogue by Cowling & Co. of Seneca Falls, NY showcasing pumps, fire engines and hydraulic rams, and including well over 100 engraved plates. A number of the pages show light wear and offsetting, tipped-in engraved portraits at the pastedowns of opera singers Jenny Stubel and Marie Geistinger, and light wear to the hinges and endsheets. And yet, in spite of these clear signs of the book's age (did we also mention wear and light chipping along a number of the page edges and several loose pages?), the catalogue remains surprisinglhy presentable in its dark-green cloth and bright gilt-titling. Octavo, 118 pgs. Some of the items catalogued include Iron Cistern Pumps, Farm Pumps, Deep Well Lift Pumps, Portable Green-House Engines, Garden Engines, Piano Style Fire Engines and Boys' Fire Engines. A nice piece of mid-19th century Americana.

As far as I am aware, this is the first 1867 in original covers to be offered on this site. The book itself is in excellent condition. The front and rear wrappers are very slightly darkened and with the odd mark as can be seen from the photographs. The wrappers are entirely complete without any chips or loss. There is a small closed tear to the front wrapper which has not resulted in any loss at all. Internally, the book is in fabulous condition for it's age. The pages are clean, original and unmarked. The book has had no restoration whatsoever. It is very rare to find a book of this age in entirely original condition with it's original wrappers. A super copy. We also have fabulous copies for 1864 and 1868 in original wrappers which we hope to list shortly. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Armstrong, Margaret
Offered here is a striking collection of nearly 250 books with covers by Margaret Armstrong, with a small quantity with just spines, or written/illustrated by Armstrong. Margaret Neilson Armstrong (1867-1944) was probably the most-acclaimed American book cover designer of the late 19th and early 20th Century, her work virtually universally appreciated for its high degree of decorative, Art Nouveau apsects, as well as balanced composition. Gullens and Espey, in their definitive bibliography of Armstrong's works (1991), cites 314 separate titles either with cover(s) or spine designed by Armstrong, or written/illustrated by Armstrong, and the lion's share of these are represented in this collection, including nearly all of the celebrated, highly ornate covers. The total list of covers by Armstrong is still somewhat in doubt, but probably around 250-275, with several still in doubt. This collection is highly representative, with most covers in very good or better condition, a few with wrappers and slipcases, and a few signed, but the collection was built in the 1960's by one collector with a few toward obtaining the best copies available at the time (i.e. before internet). Thereforethe collection is best described as a bibliophile's collection (versus containing the finest examples for each title), which would be prohibiitively expensive given today's prices. A complete record of the collection has been compiled, and every book photographed. For any interested party, this will be made available via a Dropbox link. Price does not include shipping, and the collection will be sold … [Click Below for Full Description]

THIS A VERY HARD TO FIND -THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM PRESCOTT in 15 volumes. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott; Printed in 1867. Bound in morocco leather bindings. Gilded spines. Raised hubs. Marbled edges and end papers. Engraved frontisplates. Printed on quality paper, with wide margins. A direct descendant of the revolutionary American officer William Prescott, William H. Prescott spent his childhood and adolescence in Boston, Massachusetts. Prescott attended Harvard University, and considered a legal career, but his poor health prevented him from working professionally and he therefore dedicated himself to a life of writing. After an extensive period of study, during which he sporadically contributed to academic journals, Prescott specialized in late Renaissance Spain and the early Spanish Empire. His works on the subject, The History of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella the Catholic (1837), The History of the Conquest of Mexico (1843), A History of the Conquest of Peru (1847) and the unfinished History of the Reign of Phillip II (1856-1858) have become classic works in the field, and have had a great impact on the study of both Spain and Mesoamerica. During his lifetime, he was upheld as one of the greatest living American intellectuals, and knew personally many of the leading political figures of the day, in both the United States and Britain. Prescott has become one of the most widely translated American historians, and was an important figure in the development of history as a rigorous academic discipline. It is in good condition. Dante Alighieri / Henry Wadsworth
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1867. Condition: Very Good binding. Quarto. "In order to 'get' Dante, a translator has to be both a poet and a scholar, attuned to the poet's vertiginous literary experimentalism as well as his superhuman grasp of cultural and intellectual history. This is why one of the few truly successful English translations comes from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a professor of Italian at Harvard and an acclaimed poet." Longfellow's work has long been considered the best and most faithful translation of the Divine Comedy. Volume I is a First Printing; Volume II is a First Printing; the priority of Volume III has not been determined, however we have BAL's Variant A. With all points of a First Printing called for by the BAL: Vol. I, p. 223, note 116 reads "di quegli antichi spiriti." Vol. II, p. 350, note 32 reads "it will be noted that Dante." Leaf pasted under the endpaper of Volume II, and two blank flyleaves. Variant A of Volume III, with the 'H' set beneath the first 'c' in 'according' on the copyright page; priority unknown. A clean copy with no marks of any kind. Publisher's green cloth binding with lettering in gilt on the front board and spine; beveled edges. (BAL 5 12146. The American Scholar, Joseph Luzzi, "How to Read Dante in the 21st Century"). [Attributes: First Edition]

LIFEBOATS]
Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1867. FIRST EDITIONS. Two works in one volume, 8vo, pp. 167, [1] blank, 10 lithograph plates; [2], 32, with frontispiece and four folding plates, plus two full-page illustrations; second work with worm traces at foot, not affecting text, and some light dampstaining; otherwise generally clean; in contemporary red morocco-backed red cloth; spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Two works offering a valuable insight into the workings of the recently established lifeboat services of France. The first describes the establishment, goals, and organisation of the Société de sauvetages maritimes de Provence. This had been established in Marseille in 1863, and this volume collects together the company’s statutes, proceedings, and documents relating to its working. Listed are the company’s officers, benefactors, and members, and the rules for admission; we also find the minutes of meetings, with details of the company’s financial status and the benefits afforded by membership (including reduced fares from various railway companies). There is a report on the state of the company’s boats and their equipment, and extracts from newspaper articles relating to the company. The work concludes with a section containing instructions for lifeboatmen on first aid before medical help arrives, based on the work of Leroy d’Étroilles. Ten lithograph plates at the end illustrate features of the lifeboats owned by the company. The second work in the volume was published by the Société centrale de sauvetage des naufrages, and describes the design and features of their new lifeboats. … [Click Below for Full Description]

VERDI, Giuseppe 1813-1901
Paris: Léon Escudier [PN L.E. 2765., L.E. 2765 et 2767.], [April 1867]. Large octavo. Quarter dark brown morocco with textured brown cloth boards, previous owner's initials ("M.G.") gilt to upper, spine in compartments with rules and titling gilt, marbled endpapers. 1f. (lithographic title illustration by Trinocq after Cravzat including names of Verdi operas entwined around a set of arched columns), 1f. (named cast list for the premiere performance at the Paris Opéra, on March 11, 1867 and index), 359 pp. Text in French. Lithographed. Binding slightly worn, rubbed, bumped and stained; hinges tender. Slightly foxed; first signature slightly split; occasional small tears; impression occasionally weak; publisher's handstamp to lower right corner of title. First Edition. Hopkinson 61A considers this to be the earliest printing. Collector and bibliographer William Crawford, however, identified what he believed to be an earlier issue, distinguished by typographical differences to the title page (Verdi's name in a smaller typeface and the absence of the lithographer's name to the lower right corner) and the absence of the printer's imprint to the foot of the first page of music. "Don Carlos has of late become one of the best-loved and most respected of Verdi's operas... Verdi dedicated to the work some of his greatest dramatic music. One need think only of the magnificent series of confrontational duets that form such a great part of the drama... several of these break decisively with traditional models, forging for themselves a vital new relationship between musical and dramatic … [Click Below for Full Description]

NOIR (Victor);
Imp.
