The Charles Dickens Dinner: An Authentic Record of The Public Banquet Given to Mr. Charles Dickens at the Freemasons' Hall, London, On Saturday, November 2, 1867, Prior to His Departure for the United States with a Report of the Speeches from Shorthand Notes

London and Boston: Chapman and Hall; Ticknor and Field, 1867. First edition. A Very Good example of this noteworthy piece of Charles Dickens ephemera, being the record of a dinner given him prior to his departure for America where he was to give his farewell American reading tour --- Dickens and his wife had previously visited the United States in 1842 --- which American Tour was then followed by a series of Farewell Readings in England, Scotland, and Ireland during 1868 and 1869. The Freemasons' Hall Banquet memorialized in the Pamphlet here offered featured over 100 prominent persons of the day and included speeches by Lord Lytton, the Dinner's Chairman, Anthony Trollope, and others. This is a Very Good example of this uncommon item in the Publisher's original stitched wrappers, with some moderate edge wear, a split at the spine below the lower stitch, and some modest soiling. A noteworthy Dickens item and one connecting him with many of the great persons of the day.

THE CLAVERINGS (Superb Copy, Fine in Original Publisher's Cloth)

London: Smith, Elder, 1867. Trollope, Anthony. THE CLAVERINGS. London: Smith, Elder, 1867. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION in Two Volumes, original publisher's bright green cloth, gilt, ornately blocked in black and gold (an example of the scarce and preferable first binding state). 8vo, all ads correct. In FINE, ORIGINAL UNTOUCHED CONDITION, rarely seen thus. Virtually unworn with only the most trivial of faults; a little light foxing can be found on the edges, on both sets of prelims as well as the title of Volume One. Michael Sadleir, Trollope's bibliographer, said of THE CLAVERINGS that "there is not a loose end, not a patch of drowsiness, not a moment of false proportion." It still stands as one of the best of Trollope's forty-seven novels and one of the famous Victorian author's high spots. This is the compelling tale of Henry Clavering's unrequited love for beautiful Julia Brabazon (who declines his pure affections for a depraved marriage with a member of the nobility which, alas, leads to her fall from grace). However, being jilted has the fortuitous result of eventually guiding Henry toward redemption and a better outcome (happy ending). In England's 1860s, men struggled for career and it was no easy task for a simple engineer (in this case) to rise in the highly rigid Victorian caste system. But Julia Brabazon got the truly raw deal, as women had only marriage as a path to getting ahead in the world and the wrong choice, as here, was the way to ruin. An interesting social document as well as a fascinating novel. Sadleir, Trollope, p. 27. Wolff 6771. Stunning copy of the first edition, first binding. A better copy would be difficult to find... First Edition. Fine. Illus. by M. Ellen Edwards.

His experience was universal, his knowledge encyclopaedic." In addition to much information on contemporary trout and fishing methods, Francis devotes more than one hundred pages to the dressing of salmon flies. The colour plates are magnificent. Although firstpublished in 1867, FFCL has chosen the text and illustrations of the most complete and revised edition of the Fifth edition of 1880 with the additions of Sir Herbert Maxwell's eight page Introduction of 1920 plus theFrancis Francis Prefaces to both the first and second editions. Chadwick generally regarded as the first 'Sports' writer in the United States; the "Rules of Baseball are largely his work..." [DAB]. This continuous series by Beadle & Chadwick, of which this is the 6th example, ran through 1881 & was first issued in 1860 [none in 1861 or 1863]; it has the distinction of being the first ever of such a nature, and gave rise to the many iterations today's fans so much enjoy, as well as laboriously study [can you say, "Fantasy Baseball"?]. All these early guides now quite rare- none of this series at auction these last 30 years, and OCLC shows but one listing [7th ed] for the 9 editions up to 1870. .         A Second Century of Orchidaceous Plants

London: L. Reeve and Co., 1867. First edition. A few scattered text pages with mild foxing, the fine hand-colored plates are bright and clean (only 3 plates show the slightest hint of marginal foxing); an exceptionally bright and clean copy in near fine condition.. Pp. viii, with 100 full-page hand-colored lithographs by W. Fitch, each plate is accompanied by one or two pages of descriptive text. Publisher's original blind-stamped green pebble cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover, and with the stamped gilt seal (probably after Bateman) on the front cover, lg 4to (12.5 x 10 inches). This fine publication is completely separate work from Hooker's volume 'A Century of Orchidaceous Plants' published in 1846. The Bateman volume consists of 100 fine hand-colored plates selected from orchids published in the 'Curtis Botanical Magazine' from 1846-1866. The selected images were the most attractive and easily cultivated orchidaceous plants. The larger format of the present work allowed these fine illustrations to be published without any folds. New and/or more complete descriptions of these orchids were provided by Bateman. The fine hand-coloring this work is superior to the Curtis Botanical Magazine images. Bateman is considered the leading expert on orchids in the 19th century. He is probably best known from his truly immense work 'Orchidaceae of Mexico and Guatamala.' See also Stafleu and Cowan 344, Pritzel 471 and Nissen BBI, 87. No previous ownership marks.

        LOTTA SCHMIDT and Other Stories

1867. London: Alexander Strahan, 1867. Bound in full dark green morocco, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. First Edition of this collection of nine short stories. The title tale is about a young Viennese shopgirl and her attraction to an elderly violinist, Herr Crippel.~Sadleir places this title in the scarcer half of Trollope's first editions ("I have never seen a copy really in mint condition"), and we seldom see it. This copy is bound in full dark green morocco that bears armorial devices on the front cover and spine -- and the bookplate identifies the original owner as William Proby, the Fifth Earl of Carysfort (1836-1909) of County Wicklow, Ireland. The volume is in fine condition (spine very slightly browned). In all, this is a highly acceptable copy of a tough Trollope title. Sadleir (TROLLOPE) 28; Sadleir (XIX) p. 382; Wolff 6785.

        Vues d'Espagne].

// // In the 1860s the German painter Friedrich Eibner accompanied the Russian Prince Mestchersky during a trip to Spain. Back in the Russian Tsar enthusiastic, selected 35 watercolors among the 65 performed. It is the rarest book of a Russian traveler in the 19th century. View of Sevilla, Córdoba, Granada, Malaga, Gibraltar, Toledo, Segovia, Burgos, Valladolid, Valencia and Barcelona. The number of plates is similar to the Biblioteca Real Madrid (only copy we could find). No copy listed at auction records since 35 years. The art gallery Dagmar Fleischmann Munich has published a catalog in 1987. It brought together 84 original drawings of Munich Friedrich Eibner, 24 on the Album Prince Mestchersky. The catalog states that "the existence of a complete copy of the album could not be proven until now." //

        AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS)

Bridgeport, CT, 22 March 1867. Letter. Normal creases from folding. About Fine. A scarce two-page letter asking for a political favor on the front and verso of a 4-1/2" x 8" ruled sheet of paper to the American author and important editor George W. Curtis in which Barnum writes his last name four times. An interesting letter, in full: "In the last column of first page of this week's Nation is an article on the Conn. election in which the religious element in this district is appealed to scratch my name. The 'Iron' Barnum yesterday distributed thousands of copies of that paper in packages at the massive R.R. stations and it is said by authority that the copperheads in this district preferred the article in question & ordered the papers in advance. This (Iron) WH Barnum is a profane man and the 'democratic' party in this district is exhibiting more virulence & [?] filth than was ever before seen in a political [?]-- WH Barnum expending $25,000 among the hotels & groggeries in the district for the [?] influence & yet they appeal to the susceptibilities of the religious community. As this is a very close district we need every good influence to counteract their poison, hence if you can say a word in reply to this last effort of theirs, you will benefit the Republic party & much oblige." SIGNED "P. T. Barnum." W. H. Barnum was a distant relative of P. T. Barnum (3rd cousin, once removed) and also the political "Boss" of Fairfield County. P. T. was nominated by the Republican Party as a candidate for U.S. Congress in 1867 to run against the Democrat W. H., who won the election. W. H. Barnum later also served in the U. S. Senate and was the longest-serving chair of the Democratic National Committee (1877 to 1889). In 1863 Curtis became the political editor of HARPER'S WEEKLY, which was highly influential in shaping public opinion. One of the most influential American journalists of any day, Curtis also was known for his speeches, one of which was a tribute to Charles Sumner. He also had the honor of helping Thoreau build his cabin on Walden Pond. W. H. Barnum was the chief executive of The Barnum Richardson Company, which owned or controlled a number of iron mines, and was known as "Iron" Barnum.

Handbuch Der Physiologischen Optik [Physiological Optics]

Leipzig: Leopold Voss, 1867. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Leipzig: Leopold Voss 1867. First Edition. Rebound in modern black cloth faux leather with red and gilt spine label, new endpapers and rear pocket for the plates. xiv (i - blank, ii - series half-title), 874, [1] pp. 11 plates, loose, stored in pocket; first 5 are paper, last 6 are thin board. All plates clean and complete except plate 1 is in 2 pieces with small loss at center, and plate 4 is an inexpensive FACSIMILE. The group also contains the original title page for the Atlas, volume 2, laid down on paper with loss at the right margin affecting the 'IK' in 'OPTIK' with fraying. Pages clean and in good state except for very marginal dampstaining to the book's top edge, only touching a few lines of the text in the last 150 pages or so. Trimmed when rebound, inner margins a bit tight but readable. Previous owner's bookplate, and autograph note pasted onto one of the new endpapers. Garrison/Morton 1513 notes that the first edition, published in 1867, is "One of the greatest books on physiological optics. It includes Helmholtz's revival of the Young theory of color vision." Heirs of Hippocrates Online notes that Helmholtz was "One of the scientific giants of his age [he] made fundamental advances in both physiology and physics, including the establishment of the first law of thermodynamics [he] became the first to measure the speed of a nerve impulse [his] extensive investigations into physiological optics led to his invention of the ophthalmoscope, now one of the most common and useful tools in clinical medicine." "Because Helmholtz's name is linked so closely with physics and electrophysiology, it is sometimes forgotten that he was a physician who held posts at a number of prominent medical schools. It was during his tenure at Heidelburg that this monumental treatise [referring to Handbuch der physiologischen Optik] on optics was written. Originally issued in parts between 1856 and 1866, the work provided the first real description of optical physiology including the mechanism of accommodation, the phenomenon of color vision, and the measurement of lens curvature." We offer here the first book edition, published in 1867. Garrison & Morton 1513; Grolier-Horblit 49b; Heirs of Hippocrates Online 1887; Norman 1046.

Exposicion que el Illmo. S.D.D.

First edition. Gray paper wrappers. Wrappers soiled, two small paper remnants on front edge most likely from a seal being removed, and one partial paper stamp on rear, inked numeral to corner, spine worn at foot, scattered foxing but overall contents clean and still very good. Sm. 8vo. Francisco Orueta's argument against confiscation of church property. The Catholic Church had seen the adoption of the 1860 constitution in Peru as an assault on its power. Another assault was launched in in late 1866 and early 1867 by Fernado Casos (1828-1881), a revolutionary, author of a history of Peru and two historical novels, and liberal member of the Congreso Constituyente who authored a bill for the confiscation of Church property (republished in this volume after the preface by Jose Sebastian, Archbishop of Lima). Scarce. We could find none listed at auction. BN Peru has a copy and OCLC locates only five others: Harvard Law, Univ.Texas, and three at the Univ. Calif. None on Copac or any online European or Latin American libraries. Quiñones: Imprenta en el norte del Perú p. 31.
