Collection of 56 stereoscopic photographic views from Watkins' Pacific Coast series, principally depicting scenes in Yosemite]

      - San Francisco: 1867 [copyright date]. 56 stereoscopic albumen prints by Watkins, on original yellow card mounts (3 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches), with his 429 Montgomery Street address. Housed in a modern morocco backed cloth box. Important collection of Watkins stereoviews of Yosemite. Carleton Watkins was one of the finest 19th century landscape photographers. The magnificence of the Yosemite Valley was unknown to settlers until 1849 and it remained so until Watkins brought photographic images of its extraordinary beauty to the public. Watkins's vistas of a serene and underpopulated land demonstrated the ideal harmony between man and nature. "The controlled grandeur of his views of the sublime is encoded not only with classical ideals of simplicity, geometry, and measure but also with a perception of the West as the primordial theatre of an authentically American place" (The Waking Dream, Gilman Paper Company Collection, p. 124). These photographs helped clinch the notion that Yosemite was a relic of Eden in North America. Although Watkins is best known for his mammoth plate photographs, his work was also published as stereoscopic views. In July of 1861 Watkins first traveled to Yosemite equipped with a stereoscopic camera, taking 100 stereoscopic negatives. He returned to Yosemite between 1865 and 1866 which yielded an additional 300 stereoscopic negatives. The present collection includes 50 images of Yosemite (11 from the first series taken in 1861, and 39 from the second series taken between 1865-66), as well as 5 images in San Francisco (including 3 Cliff House views, a July 4 1864 image of Montgomery Street and a view from Telegraph Hill), and an additional image of the entrance to the New Almaden, CA mine. Unusually, the collection is from an early period, with the images on Watkins' yellow card mounts with his Montgomery Street address (images printed subsequently would be on orange cards and a different address post-1871). The stereoviews present here were printed between 1867 and 1868, with many including notice of his Paris International Exposition medal on verso. Photographic historian Peter Palmquist has noted, "As a landscape photographer Watkins is best remembered for his pictures of Yosemite. Not only did he achieve many of his artistic successes there, but Yosemite also became more widely known and appreciated because of his eloquence and vision." Cf. Peter Palmquist, Carleton E. Watkins, photographer of the American West (Albuquerque, 1983) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SIKART u. Brun, SKL 2, 1908). II: Die Stadt Luzern. I. Teil. Basel 1953, p. 94 u. 98 f.). Karr, Taxile Delord & Le Cte Foelix. Nouvelle edition.

1867. Paris, Garnier Freres, 1867. 2 volumes. Royal 8vo (265 x 170mm). pp. (2), 339, (5); (2), 321, (5), with 2 handcoloured lithographed frontispieces, 50 handcoloured lithographed plates and 2 plain lithographed plates. Contemporary green half calf, richly gilt spines, gilt edges. The first edition was published in 1847. "Of all his work, this is his most graceful fantasy: the fifty-two plates of court beauties in floral haute couture present a suite of fashionable tableaux redolent of the sentimental spirit of French Romanticism, at the end of the July Monarchy and in the predawn of the Second Empire. This briljant assembly of the Court of Flora has all the elements of Romantic ballet with its highly conventionalized poses, fanciful costumes, and magical settings. To these Grandville has playfully added attendant beetles, crickets, butterflies, moths, and caterpillars, those diminutive inhabitants of the garden, in variant agressive or sycophant roles" (Wick, P.A.. The Court of Flora, 1981)..

Autographed Letter Signed soliciting witnesses for Andrew Johnson's impeachment trial

Washington: , 1867. Washington, 1867. unbound. Exceedingly rare and historically important two-page letter, 10 x 8 inches, Washington, January 22, 1867. Written on lined paper with "House Reps (Confidential)" at the top. In this correspondence, Ashley writes to W.G. Brownlow, the Governor of Tennessee, soliciting witnesses who will testify against President Andrew Johnson at his impeachment trial. In part: "...give me the names at once of all witnesses who can sustain any of the charges preferred against the President...let this be done promptly...If the Union men are (earnest) let them come forward with the facts...I hope your legislature will promptly enfranchise the loyal men of color and this same Tennessee from the fate of Maryland..." Several folds with light browning and foxing; small tear along one of the folds. Very good(-) condition. Ashley was the democratic congressman and abolitionist who supervised the underground railroad and who drew the bill abolishing slavery, the first proposition to amend the constitution. Through his hatred for Republican Andrew Johnson, Ashley solicited charges and then introduced the Articles of Impeachment in 1867.

        Os Chins de Macau

1867 - The Chinese of Macau described. 1867. Hong Kong. Typographia de Noronha e Filhos. In 8vo (186 mm x 118 mm). 1 [blanks] + xi + 144 + 2 ff. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary red morocco, boards with gilt fillet, spine flat tooled and lettered in gilt, head of spine chipped, scattered wormholes. Title page with ink ownership inscription, irrelevant foxing to a few leaves, else an excellent copy. First edition. An important work on the Chinese population resident in Macau; divided into 13 chapters, it deals with the topography of the city –accompanied by a map-, the bazar, manners and costumes of the Chinese, their industry, commerce, habits, religion, and general aspects of daily life. Macao was under Portuguese control from the 16th up to the 20th century; its port was fundamental for trade in Asia and thus coveted by naval powers such as the Dutch. The inhabitants were a combination of Portuguese, African slaves, and within time, Chinese. In the 19th century, the prosperity made it an attraction pole for Chinese works seeking jobs. This set of peculiarities makes the city’s history different from the rest of China. Books printed in Hong Kong are scarce; this particular title hasn’t appeared for auction since 1986, Swann Galleries, 350 u$s. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

French text, 8vo, approximately 255 x 165 mm, 10 x 6½ inches, mounted photograph of Vidie as frontispiece, a few text illustrations, 408 pages plus 1 (Contents table), bound in contemporary half morocco, marbled sides, gilt dividing lines, raised bands with gilt rules and gilt lettering to spine, gilt top edges, marbled endpapers, silk marker.         Circular[s]: Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery of the State of New York. 1867-1922 [Eight Volumes].

New York: [Commandery of the State of New York], 1867-1922.. 8vo. Three quarter morocco over red boards, four raised bands ruled in gilt, gilt titles; one volume matching cloth. First edition. The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, begun in Philadelphia in 1865, was modeled on the Society of the Cincinnati, and formed to protect the republic amid rumors of a plot to destroy the government after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Among its members were Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, Benjamin Harrison, and William McKinley. By 1899 it had over 8000 members which included nearly every officer of note. The New York Commandery was the second formed after Pennsylvania. This collection is a nearly complete run lacking perhaps a dozen and a half meeting and other notices (out of 1194) prior to 1879, otherwise complete through 1922, ending with the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. Contains circulars, papers, and annual meeting notices (as well as a few unnumbered items such as letters, publication advertisements, etc). The meeting notices are nearly all signed, corrected, and annotated by the New York Commandery recorders; they were then sent to the Illinois Commandery for their records. Written in hand in the early volumes, and by stamp latter on, the disposition of each person seeking membership was noted; the first volume contains additional and extensive handwritten notes and a letter explaining the rejection of a candidate by Horatio King (1811-1897) who was Postmaster General of the United States under James Buchanan and the first recorder. A later volume contains a tipped in typed and signed letter, explaining an expulsion for "conduct unbecoming of an officer." Beginning in the first volume is the appearance of the first black bordered "In Memoriam" notice, usually four pages, with a biography of the deceased. These biographies will, slowly come to make up the bulk of the circulars as the former officers passed away. A wealth of information and a very scarce collection, made irreplaceable by the annotations and corrections of the recorders. A very good set with the bookplate of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Commandery of the State of Illinois on front pastedowns of most volumes, shadow of sticker on foot of most backstrips. spine ends and joints scuffed on most volumes, well bound, most circulars quite clean.

The Poultry Book; [bound with] Pigeons: their Structure, Varieties, Habits, and Management

London: George Routledge and Sons, 1867 A good to very good copy of the 1st edition of the Book of Poultry, 1867, bound with Pigeons, 1868. With stunning colour printed illustrations by Harrison Weir. In very good contemporary half leather binding with gilt compartments and red title label. Page edges and endpapers marbled. The Book of Poultry has frontispiece, decorative colour title page, further title page, and 28 colour and 16 full page black and white illustrations. 355pp including appendix. Pigeons has colour frontispiece and 15 further full page colour plates. 188pp. Numerous black and white illustrations throughout both volumes. The binding has slight wear at the top and bottom of the spine but is in very good and sound condition. Internally there is brown spotting that affects some leaves and many plate margins. It occasionally affects the plates - but these are so strongly coloured that it is not particularly noticeable unless the birds are set against a light background. Some plates have tissue guards but these are generally detached and ragged. Where there are no guards there is offsetting to text pages and there is occasional offsetting from the black and white plates. The plate of 'Spanish' has been rebound in to the Poultry volume. Pigeons has a damp stain affecting the top left corner of the frontispiece; page 35 has a little paper missing from the margin not affecting text; the almond tumbler and runts plates have a dampstain affecting the top left corner; magpies has a damp stain affecting the upper right corner. The last few leaves of Pigeons have some browning. The rear endpaper has a little white marking and is splitting although the book is sound.
