The anthology was immediately reissued without them. WILLIAM JOHNSON CORY'S COPY, with ink inscription to half-title reading, "Wm Johnson from Lady Winchilsea received two days after leaving Haverholme Jan[.]y 9 1867". Cory was dismissed from Eton under a cloud of scandal in 1872, publicly changing his name from Johnson to Cory at the same time. Front free endpaper bears the inscription "William Johnson, Halsdon [Cory's inherited Devonshire home]" in black ink - hard to discern as the endpapers are a shade of dark green. Two pencilled textual annotations, perhaps in Cory's hand, and a lengthy pencilled note to verso of front free endpaper concerning the bibliographical details of this suppressed edition, in what seems to be the same hand. Original brown cloth with gilt fleur-de-lys decoration to spine & upper cover, and the same design in blind to lower board. An unsophisticated copy, spine showing wear, lower hinge slightly weak. (There are no poems by Cory in the anthology).

Large, thick royal 8vo, handsomely bound in the publisher's full contemporary brown cloth lettered and pictorially decorated in gilt on the spines, elaborate gilt decorative devices to the central panels of the covers, floral borders stamped in blind on both the covers and spines, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. xii, 400; [viii], 394, 2 ads. [iv]; 362 pp. A fine, beautifully preserved set, the text-blocks strong and clean, the cloth in excellent conditon with just a tad of rubbing to the tips of the spines primarily from shelving, corners, generally speaking, in nice condition with only a little wear or evidence of age or use, a bright, clean set, inner hinges in good order, those of Vol. I with a touch of separation to the paper at the pastedown and free-fly, a tight, and handsome set. A BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED SET OF THIS CLASSIC WORK IN UNUSUALLY NICE CONDITION. The Stones of Venice is the three-volume treatise on Venetian art and architecture by the great English art historian John Ruskin. "The Stones of Venice examines Venetian architecture in detail, describing for example over eighty churches. He discusses architecture of Venice's Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance periods, and provides a general history of the city. As well as an being an art historian, Ruskin was a social reformer. In the chapter "The Nature of Gothic" (Volume 2), Ruskin gives his views on how society should be organised. Ruskin set out to prove how Venetian architecture exemplified the principles he discussed in his earlier work, The Seven Lamps of Architecture. Ruskin had visited Venice before, but he made two visits to Venice with his wife Effie specially to research the book. The first visit was in the winter of 1849-50. The first volume of The Stones of Venice appeared in 1851 and Ruskin spent another winter in Venice researching the next two volumes. His research methods included sketching and photography (by 1849 he had acquired his own camera so that he could take daguerrotypes). It aroused considerable interest in Victorian Britain and beyond. The chapter "The Nature of Gothic" was admired by William Morris, who published it separately in an edition which is in itself an example of Gothic revival. The book inspired Marcel Proust (the narrator of the Recherche visits Venice with his mother in a state of enthusiasm for Ruskin) and in 2010 Roger Scruton wrote that the book was, "the greatest description in English of a place made sacred by buildings." Der Totentanzzyklus auf der (nach üblicher Bezeichnung:) Spreuerbrücke, entstanden in den Jahren 1626?1635/1637 gilt als gesichertes Werk Meglingers und als bedeutendstes erhaltenes Beispiel eines Totentanzes. ?Von den ursprünglich 65 [recte wohl: 67] Tafeln des Totentanzes sind 46 am Ort, die übrigen in Museen und Magazinen der Stadt erhalten.? (Kunstführer durch die Schweiz. Bd. 1, 1971, p. 321). ? ?Der Maler Kaspar Meglinger schuf in 67 Tafeln einen Totentanz, den er auf der Darstellung des Weltgerichtes signierte. Die Blütezeit erlebte das Motiv im Zeitalter der Reformation: Die Basler Bilder wurden umgestaltet, in Bern malte Niklaus Manuel einen monumentalen Totentanz und Hans Holbein der Jüngere schuf Vorlagen für eine erfolgreiche Holzschnittfolge, die als Emblembuch 1538 in Lyon veröffentlicht wurde. Totentänze kommen in der Schweiz seither als grossformatige Zyklen im öffentlichen Raum, in Erbauungsbüchern und Kalendern, auf kunstgewerblichen Objekten wie Dolchscheiden und Glasbildern, als Denkmäler, in Liedern und als szenische Aufführungen vor. Das Verbreitungsgebiet erstreckt sich über fast die ganze Schweiz. Das bedeutendste erhaltene Beispiel sind die zwischen 1626 und 1635 entstandenen Tafeln von Kaspar Meglinger auf der Spreuerbrücke in Luzern.?       London: Paul Jerrard, 1867 . Folio, unpaginated (about 200 pp.) b/w decorations and illustrations. This is the lithographic reprint of the entire file of a weekly paper that was circulating in manuscript aboard "HMS Chesapeake." It is rare, with Worldcat showing only four libraries holding copies. U Conn. has an interesting website devoted to this shipboard publication at The article talks in general about shipboard publishing and the scarcity of surviving examples. "Victorian shipboard periodicals hold the promise of new perspectives on shipboard culture and events surrounding a given ship's commission. In the case of "The Young Idea" circulated in manuscript during the Chesapeake's service in the East India Station, these events include "The Indian Mutiny" and the Second Opium War." It also states, "The handful of shipboard periodicals we know about are not available in the forms in which they originally circulated. The manuscript pages of "The Young Idea" are not extant..." Well, laid into this copy is the manuscript of issue no. 34, Saturday 28 August 1858, which corresponds exactly to the article in the 1867 lithograph reprint. The manuscript is written on blue folio sheets watermarked "Weatherley 1854," slightly smaller than the page size of litho reprint which was made from the diary of the ship's chaplain. A fascinating survival of a publication rich in period history. The front blank bears the ms. notation "From Lady Perrott 1918 to MW" Below this is the note "Capt. Marcus Ware RN was one of the Jun. Lieuts in HMS Chesapeake." Unfortunately this copy was physically compromised by the time Lady Perrott rescued and rebound it. The first ten pages, and the entirety of the final four pages are mangled, waterstained, and torn, with considerable loss of text. The rest of the paper, happily, is in good shape and quite legible, with no loss of text. Bound in half morocco over boards, hinges cracked but holding.

      Garnier Freres, Paris 1867 - Two quarto (7" x 10-3/4") volumes bound in half green calf leather with gilt lettering and green marbled boards. Illustrated with 52 superb anthropomorphic hand-colored plates (including 2 title pages), 2 black-and-white plates, and numerous wood-engravings in the text, all after J. J. Grandville. Text by several contributors. Grandville was a caricaturist best known for presenting animals and flowers in human form and using them to satirize the French social and political milieu of his period. Foxing to the text, but the color plates are quite clean. A few plates loose or detached in the second volume. Very Good set of this classic [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Nach heutigen Erkenntnissen dürfte er von Ma'an aus nach dem Wadi Sirhan im Süden gezogen sein, dort von der Oasengruppe Djuf aus die Nefud nach Hail am Dschebel Schammar erreicht haben. Er soll monatelang in der Hauptstadt Er-Riad gewohnt haben und sogar bis an den Persischen Golf gekommen, von Oman nach Maskat gesegelt und dort im März 1863 eingetroffen sein. Demnach hätte er Arabien von NW nach SO durchmessen (vgl. Henze). - Die grenzkolorierte Karte von Arabien im Format 36,7 x 47cm zeigt die arabische Halbinsel mit nahezu allen zu dieser Zeit bekannten geographischen Details ( Oman, Katar, Jemen etc.)., Titelblatt und Seite 1 gestempelt. A record of Baker?s preliminary explorations of the Nile tributaries of Abyssinia in which he was engaged for fourteen months before embarking on the journey which led to his greatest achievement, the discovery of the Albert Nyanza, the origin of the Nile. During this period he also mastered Arabic, acquired the use of astronomical instruments, and engaged in big game hunting. "His prowess in the field won for him the friendship and admiration of the Hamran Arabs, themselves mighty hunters." (DNB).       St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, 1867. Sheets with wear around the edges. Each sheet neatly backed with paper, repairing small tears or separations. Overall, in good condition, and very readable. In a half morocco and cloth folding box, spine gilt. An exciting firsthand account by an American sailor, describing the effects of the terrible earthquakes and tsunamis that hit the Virgin Islands on November 18, 1867. J.L.B. Cauvelt was a sailor aboard the U.S.S. De Soto, which was anchored in the harbor of St. Thomas when the earthquake hit. The ship was badly damaged in the resultant tsunamis caused by the earthquakes, which had an estimated 7.5 magnitude on the Richter scale. These are Cauvelt's original notes of his experiences, written shortly afterward and appended to a letter he wrote to his mother on November 21. On the afternoon of November 18, 1867, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred in the Anegada trough, located between the Virgin Islands of St. Croix and St. Thomas. The earthquake actually consisted of two shocks, separated by ten minutes. These shocks generated two tsunami waves that were recorded at several island locations across the eastern Caribbean region, most notably on the islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix. The U.S.S. De Soto was docked at St. Thomas when the earthquake hit. Initially a private commercial ship, the De Soto was purchased by the United States Navy at the outbreak of the Civil War. The ship assisted in the blockade of Confederate ports, and participated in the capture or destruction of numerous blockade runners. The De Soto and two other American naval vessels arrived at St. Thomas on November 17, 1867, a day before the earthquakes and tsunamis hit. The De Soto was initially thrown onto a wharf, but was carried back to deep water by the next wave that hit St. Thomas. Badly damaged, the ship was repaired by its crew over the following days. Cauvelt begins by describing the earthquake and resultant tsunami: "At 2.50 p.m. Nov. 18th...we felt a strong quivering of the ship with a slight rumbling noise which we immediately recognized as a shock of an earthquake & of course run on deck. The shock lasted about 7 minutes and at 3.05 p.m. we saw the water rising in an immense wall about two miles out side the harbor, seemingly some 35 to 40 ft. high and advancing towards us. Of course we let go all our anchors & made what preparations we could closing all air ports &c. In about two minutes from the time we first saw it it struck a brig & bark on the outer edge of the harbor with a fearful force throwing them completely on their beam ends & the water rushing over them & parting all their moorings & tossing them about as if they were but shells. They however righted & both eventually went on shore where I suppose they will be total wrecks. A small tug boat of about two or three beams was just coming in to the harbor & received the full force & of course was swamped. Her capt. was picked up dead shortly afterwards. At the same time a sail boat went down just outside of us & all on board were lost. All this happened outside of us & as for what was going on inside of us I had no time to look for we were all rather anxious about our own fate but as the water came in the harbor it sensibly diminished & did not strike us with the same force that it did the vessels outside of us but when it struck us it made us tremble from stem to stern, at the same time parting two of our cables & sending us ashore. The reflux of the sea sent us back swinging us in all directions. One small anchor still being down but dragging & we thumping pretty heavily although as the bottom was soft it did not hurt us much. A large iron wharf on our port side was about this time washed away except the outer end against which we swung breaking our starboard paddle wheels. After being here a short time the wharf gave way, we swinging over it & the iron poles punching two holes in us. At this time the pumps were manned but could not keep her clear. We then drifted over on some dangerous rocks on the other side of the harbor & worked hard to get another anchor down. At this time I would not have given ten cents for the ship." Cauvelt goes on to describe the cool-headed response of the De Soto's commodore, and the repairs that were effected over the next few days. He mentions that another American naval vessel, the Monongahela, which had been sent to Santa Cruz from St. Thomas the day before "was totally wrecked by the effects of the same earthquake...She was struck by 5 large rollers & 7 minutes after they first saw the sea coming in she lay high & dry on the beach with her back broken." Cauvelt also comments on the destruction caused by the tsunamis on St. Thomas itself, and the plight of the people of the island: "[they] were in the greatest state of excitement as well as in a most abject state of fear being on there [sic] knees & praying more like maniacs than reasonable beings to all the saints in the callender [sic]. Seltene erste Ausgabe von Ruges Autobiographie. - Der deutsche Politiker und Publizist Arnold Ruge (1802-80) wurde als Student der Philologie 1824 wegen burschenschaftlicher Aktivität zu 14 Jahren Festungshaft verurteilt, verbüßte sechs Jahre und nutzte die Haftzeit zum Studium. Nach seiner Entlassung habilitierte er sich über "Die Platonische Ästhetik". Seit 1838 gab er die "Hallischen Jahrbücher für dt. Wiss. und Kunst" heraus, die zum theoretischen Organ der Linkshegelianer wurden; zu den Mitarbeitern zählten u. a. David Friedrich Strauß wie auch Ludwig Feuerbach. 1843 floh Ruge vor der Zensur nach Paris, wo er mit Karl Marx die "Dt.-Frz. Jahrbücher" herausgab. Als bürgerlich-radikaler Demokrat trennte er sich von Marx, als dieser zum Kommunismus überging, und kehrte im Herbst 1846 nach Deutschland zurück. Nach der Niederlage der Revolution floh Ruge nach England und lebte seit 1850 in Brighton. Er war als Sprachlehrer tätig, schrieb Dramen, Romane und Novellen und übersetzte aus dem Englischen. Text lightly tanned, plates clean. A very good copy. First American edition, using the same sheets and printing as the London edition of the same year, but with a cancel titlepage. Catlin spent some fourteen years among the various North American Indian tribes and left the most authentic anthropological record of an already vanishing people. He wrote O-KEE-PA... in response to an article appearing in an 1866 issue of Truebner's monthly catalogue. The article attributed to Catlin the authorship of an "indescribably lascivious pamphlet" on the secret customs of the Mandans (see Sabin 11528). O- KEE-PA... is as much a defense of Catlin as of the Mandans, a tribe who were mostly found on the west side of the Missouri River, most of whom were destroyed by a smallpox epidemic in 1837. Catlin states in his preface that of all the numerous customs which he had recorded, nothing was so peculiar and surprising as the O-kee-pa ceremony of the Mandans. The curious rite of O-kee-pa is shown in "horrible fidelity" (Field) in the thirteen outstanding color plates. The explicit details of the sexual elements of the ceremony were considered too shocking for the general public and were included in a separately issued three-page "Folium Reservatum," purportedly issued in an edition of approximately twenty- five copies and present here.

      San Francisco, 1867. Very good. In a modern half morocco and cloth box. Carleton Watkins was one of the finest 19th-century landscape photographers. The magnificence of the Yosemite Valley was unknown to settlers until 1849 and it remained so until Watkins brought photographic images of its extraordinary beauty to the public. Watkins' vistas of a serene and underpopulated land demonstrated the ideal harmony between man and nature. "The controlled grandeur of his views of the sublime is encoded not only with classical ideals of simplicity, geometry, and measure but also with a perception of the West as the primordial theatre of an authentically American place" - THE WAKING DREAM. These photographs helped clinch the notion that Yosemite was a relic of Eden in North America. Although Watkins is best known for his mammoth plate photographs, his work was also published as stereoscopic views. In July of 1861, Watkins first traveled to Yosemite equipped with a stereoscopic camera, taking 100 stereoscopic negatives. He returned to Yosemite between 1865 and 1866 which yielded an additional 300 stereoscopic negatives. The present collection includes fifty images of Yosemite (eleven from the first series taken in 1861, and thirty-nine from the second series taken between 1865 and 1866), as well as five images in San Francisco (including three Cliff House views; a July 4, 1864 image of Montgomery Street; and a view from Telegraph Hill), and an additional image of the entrance to the New Almaden, California mine. The collection is from an unusually early period, with the images on Watkins' yellow card mounts with his Montgomery Street address (images printed subsequently would be on orange cards and a different address post-1871). The stereoviews present here were printed between 1867 and 1868, with many including notice of his Paris International Exposition medal on verso. Photographic historian Peter Palmquist has noted: "As a landscape photographer Watkins is best remembered for his pictures of Yosemite. Not only did he achieve many of his artistic successes there, but Yosemite also became more widely known and appreciated because of his eloquence and vision.

Bean's history and directory is quite scarce and contains a great wealth of early material on this vitally important mining region. Bean, who was Nevada County assessor and editor of the DAILY GAZETTE, provides a complete history of the county, along with sketches of the various towns and mining camps, names and occupations of residents, and statistics on mining and other resources. A substantial essay is given over to mining gold from quartz deposits, which, as the author notes, has been the subject of numerous false starts. Besides the general history of Nevada County, there are also descriptions and directories of Nevada City, Grass Valley, Meadow Lake, Bridgeport, Rough and Ready, Little York, Washington, Bloomfield, and Eureka, as well as descriptions of the mines of Nevada City and Grass Valley, and a number of advertisements for local businesses. One of the great 'standard' county histories, it is, in the minds of many collectors, dealers, historians and libraries, one of the most valuable - content wise - of all directories published in the United States.         RARE Archive - Manuscript Letters & Lease Documents Pertaining to the Original Prince of Wales Theatre in Liverpool

Archive of 65 manuscript letters and 3 manuscript lease documents pertaining to the historic and all but forgotten original Prince of Wales Theatre (1862-1912) in Clayton Square, featuring correspondence between celebrated theatre manager Alexander Henderson, owner William Earp, and purchaser John Henry Addison, in which are recorded lease negotiations and purchase agreements, financial arrangements, theatrical performers, and litigation. From the archives of J.H. Brown of Messrs Wright & Brown, attorney for John Henry Addison who purchased the theatre in 1874. Some age-toning to documents, otherwise in excellent condition, a splendid content-rich theatre archive. Little known to some, the very first Liverpool Prince of Wales Theatre (1862-1912), was conceived and first operated by the distinguished Alexander Henderson, and was situated in Clayton Square, and is altogether separate from the theatre on Lime Street. Centering around John Henry Addison and Alexander Henderson, consequential firsthand information on transactions surrounding leasing the premises, a transfer of ownership, and bookings, is abundant in this archive of manuscript correspondence and documents. The lot of correspondence includes 10 signed letters from visionary theatre manager Alexander Henderson, creator of the Prince of Wales Theatre (1862-1912) in Clayton Square, first lessee of the building formerly known as Clayton Hall, and irrefutably one of the most important theatre managers of the nineteenth century, with influence in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Australia. Also included is a manuscript copy of Henderson's lease of the Prince of Wales Theatre in Liverpool in 1867. Alexander Henderson (1828-1886) was a leading promoter of theatre and burlesque for some thirty years in the nineteenth century, especially active in West End London. His legacy includes some of the biggest productions in the United Kingdom, America and Australia. The historic and lesser known Prince of Wales Theatre situated in Clayton Square, was first under the management of the lessee Mr. Alexander Henderson, who approached the building's proprietor William Earp in 1862 with his vision and immediately obtained from him a ten year lease with option to purchase. Upon returning from Australia, Henderson was meandering in Liverpool and came upon Clayton Hall in December 1859 which was advertising a musical performance by the Minstrel Troupe, for which he paid his entrance. Looking around the room, he envisioned the space as a more inviting and lovely little theatre. And so, the very next morning he brought a proposal to Mr. Earp and secured the lease presented here. Two days later he sailed for Australia, where he would stay for six months, and during which time the hall became vacant. After making the necessary modifications, Henderson secured famous actors such as Toole, Sothern, and Sir Henry Irving, with performances starting as early as January 1862. Henderson travelled to America with his wife Lydia Thompson and her dance group for six years from 1868 to 1874, bringing in others to manage the theatre in his absence. In the summer of 1874 the theatre was under management of Mr. W. Sidney. In 1876 Mr. Kittle was the lessee. On 9 October 1876 Frank Emery opened the theatre with a burlesque performance "Zampa..." All three latter names appear in this correspondence. In the meantime, in June of 1873 Mr. William Earp sold the theatre to John Henry Addison. By an indenture dated 9 April 1874 Earp released all interest in the theatre to Addison for a sum of £500. Addison and Henderson worked well together, at least for a time it seems. Interestingly, in 1875 Earp filed a lawsuit against Henderson which also implicated Addison. The original lease agreement with Henderson and the purchase agreement with Addison being unrelated to one another, the case ended in favour of the defendant. The theatre was originally a mansion built in 1769, home to Miss Clayton, daughter of Liverpool MP and prominent tobacco merchant William Clayton (ca 1661-1715), which was around the turn of the nineteenth century converted to Clayton Hall which was used at irregular intervals for entertainment, and subsequently into the Prince of Wales theatre. The Prince of Wales Theatre was demolished in 1912. A new theatre of a different kind, the Liverpool Picture House, was built adjacent to the site. (Note - This Prince of Wales Theatre in Clayton Square is not to be confused with the Prince of Wales Theatre and Opera House which opened some four years later, on 15 November 1866, very nearby on Lime Street, and which is today's Empire Theatre) Highlights from the archive include: Manuscript File copy of a ten year lease agreement made on 22 October 1867 between theatre manager Alexander Henderson of Liverpool and proprietor William Earp of Eastbourne, which replaced the first agreement made in 1862. Excerpt from the agreement: ..."The said William Earp agrees to let and the said Alexander Henderson agrees to take the Prince of Wales Theatre situated in Clayton Square Liverpool in the county of Lancaster with all fixtures fittings furniture and scenery therein belonging to the said William Earp... for the term of ten years commencing the first day of January one thousand eight hundred and seventy six at which time the existing lease of the said premises dated the nineteenth day of April one thousand eight hundred and sixty two expires... annual rent rate of one thousand and fifty pounds..." Three (3) letters from John Henry Addison to Henderson written from July to September 1874, concerning the impending law suit between Addison and the theatre's proprietor William Earp, and a falling out between Addison to Henderson. These letters are his own retained copies and further reveal private negotiations, specific performances discussed for the theatre, and also the continued business involvement of Sydney Nelson of Australia. Excerpts from the letters: "When you were in Liverpool before starting for America you said your co. would play an engagement with me in June... September would be best... In the meantime Kate Stanley's troupe wanted to come and I put them off until the date of your arrival...I also have stopped an arrangement for the autumn on the same account... you several times promised to fix a final date... I arranged for my co. to go away for 2 months, no sooner... you have decided to open at Charing Cross... "...In your letters you entirely avoid to reference to breach of engagement with me & this is a very strong point. I do not consider you entitled to the full amount you claim... I will give £250 to close everything between us... Sidney can inform of what the agreements were before he came in..." Ten (10) autograph letters signed by Alexander Henderson, nine being addressed to Addison, dated between 23 April and 10 September 1874 in response to the above, and discussing plans for his performance company. Henderson's letters are written whilst in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Carlsbad in Western Bohemia in the Czech Republic, and finally London. Excerpt from the letters: "We arrived here [Philadelphia} on Sunday... The performances of my company as done here... work so well together... Sullivan has been doing very badly & has closed up so I hear, until he goes to California." "... you might however send your company over to Dublin to play as the P. of W. party. I used to do it every year when Harry Webb had the Queens Theatre and always made money... nearly £400 every night." "... I wanted most particularly to consult you on business matters... Liverpool engagement for my company... keep the September dates open..." "... up to the time of my leaving London... Kate Stanley's arrangements were not fixed so far as Liverpool was concerned... My arrangement is to play a season at the Charing Cross Theatre of 3 months... you must occupy your time with Stars... I will if you like form a company of the best available material & play El Dorado - and my comedy... There are plenty of good people to carry out such an undertaking... " "... By a letter I've first had from Sothern it seems he himself concluded the arrangements..." "... I sold the lease to you at one sixth its value purely to meet your views, which it seems were to sell it for £3000 as you had a customer for it at that figure... I never said I would take less than £500... Without prejudicing my claim I am willing to take £450 for the debt..." "Dear A.[Addison] There is nothing to arbitrate. You bought my lease... for £500 and I handed it to you. Cancelled, endorsed, in return for your I.O.U.... I want the £500. This is simply business... Two draft agreements issued by Addison for the lease of Prince of Wales Theatre, and his portion of the Clayton Square estate, one being granted to Thomas Kittle and Sefton Henry Parry on 21 September 1874, the other a draft agreement to Mr. Frank Emery in 1877. Fifty (50) signed manuscript letters pertaining to purchase, lease, and insurance of the theatre, as well as the trial and other business matters. Twelve are penned and signed by Liverpool solicitor George R. Robertson, and discuss the lease agreement being made in 1877 between Addison and Frank Emery. Forty-seven letters and one telegram are penned and signed by John Henry Addison, addressed to his lawyer Mr. J.H. Brown, addressing numerous important matters. Excerpt from Addison's letters: "White says he sold theatre to me as it stood so this I think makes me safe." "...I sent you what I call my theatre lease at the time you were examining the Emery business..." "Theatre is now insured by me for £6000.... £1000 furniture scenery &c the latter Emery should pay I think." "... R. & E. are falling out I fancy over other matters & I'd like to get clean of both of them." "Enclosed is receipt for Earp £1000 due 31 July which I have paid..." "Earp has been attacking me fiercely in person..." "Earp writes this morning, 'will you purchase seats, scenery &c as in Mr. Henderson's lease'... Alexander Henderson (1828-1886) was a leading promoter of theatre and burlesque for some thirty years in the nineteenth century, especially active in West End London. His legacy includes some of the biggest productions in the United Kingdom, America and Australia. He gained his first theatrical experience as secretary to Edward Askew Sothern, and laid the foundations of his fortune in Australia, in dramatic enterprise. There he first tried his hand at theatre management, became acquainted with famous composer Sydney Nelson, and further apprenticed in the business with the Syndey family. In 1864 he was managing the new Theatre Royal in Birkenhead, where he met his second wife, Lydia Thompson. In 1866 he opened and managed the Prince of Wales Theatre in Liverpool, which became noted for unique staging and first class performances, and which is now one of the most important theatres in the North West - the Empire Theatre. Henderson leased and managed several theatres. After establishing the Prince of Wales, he moved on to productions in America in the summer of 1868, and later in London. His successor at the Prince of Wales was Frank Musgrave, musical director for the London Strand Theatre. After a six year production tour in New York, in 1874 Henderson was in London, at the Globe theatre. In 1878 he became owner and manager of the Folly Theatre in London (previously the Charing Cross Theatre). On 18 September 1880 the Strand Theatre re-opened with 'Olivette', a new opera-comique under the management of Alexander Henderson. The Comedy Theatre on Panton Street was built in 1881 for Henderson, from the designs of Thomas Verity, with Renaissance style ornamentation finished in white and gold, the dress circle uniquely entered directly from the street level. It opened with 'La Mascotte' on 15 October. He was also lessee of the Avenue up to the time of his death. At only fifty-seven years of age, Henderson died suddenly at Caen in Normandy on February 1st, 1886, during a millionaire's vacation. Henderson's second wife was Lydia Thompson (1838-1908), born in London, an accomplished dancer and actress in Burlesque, who travelled as far as America, on numerous occasions, with her burlesque group called the "British Blondes". She performed at the Prince of Wales Theatre in its early years. Recently wed, Henderson and Thompson sailed in August 1868 for America, she heading a small theatrical troupe, adapting popular English burlesques for middle-class New York audiences by adding topical and local references into the lyrics. Their performances were the most popular entertainment in New York during the 1868-1869 theatrical season, the planned six-month tour extending into an extremely successful tour of almost six years. Thompson, Henderson and her troupe finally returned to England in 1874, and she resumed her starring roles in London and provincial productions. In 1878 she also performed at the Folly Theatre, of which her husband Alexander Henderson was proprietor and manager. Thompson and Henderson separated, but continued to work together into the 1880s. Following Henderson's death in 1886 Thompson returned to New York for a season, and did so again in the winter seasons of 1888 and 1891. Henderson's first wife, Miss Moon, was associated with Liverpool. Fascinating stories and important historical details pertaining to the Prince of Wales Theatre in Clayton Square are found in a book titled, "Annals of the Liverpool Stage: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time," by R. Craig describes the book as containing "full and learned definitions, but little attempt at etymology or derivation". but remains uncommon, and invaluable reference for all that. Smyth went to sea early in the merchant service "in 1804 was in the East India Company's ship Cornwallis, which took part in the expedition against the Seychelles. In March 1805 the Cornwallis was bought into the navy and established as a 50 gun ship under the command of Captain Charles James Johnston. Smyth remained on board, seeing much active service in Indian, Chinese, and Australian waters" (J.K. Laughton in ODNB). But after a period largely engaged in surveying operations, which he combined with antiquarian research, he retired from the sea and pursued " a literary and scientific life". He occupied high position in the Society of Antiquaries, the Royal Astronomical Society, the Royal Society, the Royal Geographical Society - of which he was one of the founders - and was an "honorary or corresponding member of at least three-quarters of the literary and scientific societies of Europe".

According to the "Sketch of the Life of the Author (pp. 3-18), Blackson, born to free parents in Christiana, Delaware,in 1817, was a devoutly religious Methodist who, disturbed by the discriminatory mistreatment of African Americans, joined the African Union Church. Max Whiteman described the contents of this rare work of allegorical religious fiction thusly: "... Original folklore full of strange biblical characters.       Montpellier, France, 1867. 1st Edition . No Binding. Good. 1867 JULES-EMILE PLANCHON HANDWRITTEN LETTER to DR. V.A. SIGNORET, plus two of J.-E. Planchon's ORIGINAL WORKS on the FRENCH PHYLLOXERA VINEYARD PLAGUE, plus a SIGNED WORK by J.-E. Planchon's brother, GUSTAVE PLANCHON. THREE PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER by JULES EMILE PLANCHON to DR. VINCENT ANTOINE SIGNORET (addressed to "Monsieur", but clearly to Dr. Vincent Antoine Signoret, identified by the other included items that are described below). The letter is on a single-fold sheet, making 4-pages. Handwritten on the front page and the two inside pages, the back page is blank. Signed by J. E. Planchon at the end of his letter, with his current positions as Professor and Director of Pharmaceuticals in Montpellier, written beneath his signature. AN IMPORTANT LETTER - Written during the time J-E PLANCHON was investigating the cause of the destruction of grape vines throughout Europe. Much of the letter discusses botany, with botanical words such as: Chènes, Coccus, Gramutii, Pulvinatus, Chermes, Cultivés, Coquilles, Èspece, etc. Much of the letter has to do with scale insects, a specialty of the letter's recipient, DR. V.-A. SIGNORET. The letter is dated: Montpellier le 10 Decembre 1867. It appears that the letter was originally sent to GUSTAVE PLANCHON, the brother of JULES EMILE PLANCHON, in response to a booklet written by Gustave Planchon titled: LE KERMES DU CHENE - AUX POINTS DE VUE ZOOLOGIQUE, COMMERCIAL & PHARMACEUTIQUE. But the letter by Signoret to Gustave Planchon was either intercepted by or forwarded to Jules Emile Planchon, who read it and responded to it. THE LETTER IN THIS AUCTION IS THE LETTER BY J.-E. PLANCHON to SIGNORET, it DOES NOT include the assumed letter written by Signoret to Gustave. However... GUSTAVE'S BOOKLET IS INCLUDED. The booklet has printed blue wrappers, sewn binding, 5.25x8.25", 47 pages. Published in PARIS and MONTPELLIER, 1864. The booklet is SIGNED and INSCRIBED by GUSTAVE PLANCHON at the top of the front cover: "hommage de l'auteur / Gustave Planchon (signed)". The booklet has the ink-stamped signature of SIGNORET on the half-title page, again on page 7 (the beginning of the text), and a third time on the blank bottom of the last page (page 47). Handwritten on the front cover, presumably by SIGNORET is "ecrit à M. Planchon le 21 Nbre 1867". This corresponds nicely with the December 10, 1867, date on the letter by E.-J. Planchon to (presumably) Signoret. The booklet also has a handwritten, single-line, relevant note on page 23, presumably by Signoret. ALSO INCLUDED are TWO BOOKLETS on GRAPE VINES and VINEYARDS by J. E. PLANCHON. (1) An 8 page booklet titled "LA PHTHIRIOSE ou PEDICULAIRE DE LA VIGNE CHEZ LES ANCIENS - Et Les Cochenilles de la VIGNE Chez Les Modernes". A separately bound extract from the Societe des Agriculteurs de France, 1870. (2) A 16 page booklet titled "NOTES ENTOMOLOGIQUES SUR LE PHYLLOXERA VASTATRIX". A separately bound extract from the Societe des Agriculteurs de France, 1869. IN SUMMARY, THIS AUCTION IS FOR: (1) A 3-PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER BY JULES-EMILE PLANCHON. (2) A 42 PAGE Booklet by GUSTAVE PLANCHON, SIGNED by GUSTAVE PLANCHON, and owned by VINCENT ANTOINE SIGNORET, with his stamped Signature and Handwritten notes. (3) AN 8 PAGE Booklet by JULES EMILE PLANCHON on VINES both Ancient and Modern. (4) A 16 PAGE Booklet by JULES EMILE PLANCHON on PHYLLOXERA, the Plague that was destroying the Vineyards of France and Europe. CONDITION: The letter is solid, there are some stains, spots, creases and edge toning but the writing is clear throughout. The letter has a number of folds from where it was folded, presumably to fit into a small envelope. The booklet by Gustave Planchon has a couple of creases and spots, but remains solid and nice. The 8 page booklet has some creases but remains sturdy, bright and clean. The 16 page booklet is soiled, has edge wear, creases, and tears, has some foxing, and has some early previous owner's margin marks and text underlining.
