JUGLAR, Clément.
Paris: Guillaumin et Cie., 1862. Octavo (217 x 135 mm). Recent quarter red morocco and marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered gilt. Library stamps to half-title verso, title and title verso and a few other leaves, leaves guarded and resewn; an attractive copy. First edition of the book that laid the foundation of modern business cycle analysis. Les crises commerciales is the principal work of a man whom Schumpeter says "must be ranked, as to talent and command of scientific method, among the greatest economists of all times". Schumpeter bases his evaluation on three facts: "To begin with, [Juglar] was the first to use time-series material (mainly prices, interest rates, and central bank balances) systematically and with the clear purpose in mind of analyzing a definite phenomenon. Second, having discovered the cycle of roughly ten years' duration that was most obvious in his material - it was he who discovered the continent; islands near it several writers had discovered before - he proceeded to develop a morphology of it in terms of 'phases'. Third, he went on to try his hand at explanation. The grand feature about this is the almost ideal way in which 'facts' and 'theory' are made to intertwine. But all-important was his diagnosis of the nature of depression, which he expressed with epigrammatic force in the famous sentence: 'the only cause of depression is prosperity.' This means that depressions are nothing but adaptations of the economic system to the situations created by the preceding prosperities and that, in consequence, the basic problem of cycle analysis reduce … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROSSETTI, Dante Gabriel (1828-1882)
London. very good(+). Fine content A.L.S., 8vo. 2 pages, on black mourning stationary, 16 Chayne Walk, London, c. 1862, to author and patron of the arts Thomas Butts, in full: "Many thanks from my brother [William Rossetti] and myself for the 2 Blakes which we shall prize. Also for the embroidery which happens to match nearly with another framed piece I have. I am sorry to have missed you, and will hold the Raphelic Origin as hostage for your reappearance some afternoon. With kind remembrances to the Ladies of your family (I hope your mother is quite well again) and with all pleasant wishes to you in your new quarters." *Though this letter is not dated we have established that it was most definitely written in 1862. On February 18th of that year Rossetti's wife Elizabeth Siddal died of a drug overdose and he soon-there-after relocated to 16 Chayne Walk; continuing the tradition of using black bordered mourning stationary for a period of one year. His brother William, also a Pre-Raphaelite artist, moved in with him at the same time. This would explain their thanking Mr. Butts for the [house-warming] gifts at the opening of the letter. Also, the letter concludes "all pleasant wishes in his new quarters", which turned out to be brother William's old occupancy.Condition: minor foxing at the top of page one and a 1" separation at the second fold, otherwise very good.British poet and illustrator who, at age 20, founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais.

Hood, Thomas
George P. Putnam, 1862. Hardcover. Hood (1799-1845) was an English poet, journalist, and humorist whose humanitarian verses, such as "The Song of the Shirt" (1843), served as models for a whole school of social-protest poets, not only in Britain and the United States but in Germany and Russia, where he was widely translated. He also is notable as a writer of comic verse, having originated several durable forms for that genre. Frontispieces, engraved titles, and numerous textual illustrations. Six volumes. Octavo. Period three-quarter green morocco over marbled paper bindings, with four raised bands, decorative gilt stamping, and yellow endpapers. Shadow of a bookplate removed from each front flyleaf, with the bookplate of Frederick Forrest Peabody to each rear pastedown. The spines are a touch sun faded, with some wear to the corners and tips; else very good. An attractive set. Very good.

Ogden Hoffman
This is NOT the original cover. This is an older rebind of beige cloth, with the original labels reattached to the spine. Title label is largely intact with some cracking and scraping, the volume label has missing pieces. Spine is darkened. Binding is solid. The title page and the preface page are both DETACHED but PRESENT. Both are cracked along the gutter. Back side of title page has tape all along the top edge. Both the first two pages are brittle with edge chipping and tears, with a 1.5-inch tear on the fore-edge of the preface page. After that, the rest of the pages are in very good condition with age toning, with two exceptions: leaf 19/20 has a large piece of the margin missing in the middle of the fore-edge, about two inches, with a very small loss of text at the very edge, and the last page of text in the book, which has a repaired chip. If you look at the bottom edge of the book, you can see dampstain near the spine, but this does not show up on the page surfaces. VERY SCARCE! ROSSETTI, Dante Gabriel (1828-1882)
1862. London. very good(+). Also, the letter concludes "all pleasant wishes in his new quarters", which turned out to be brother William's old occupancy. Condition: minor foxing at the top of page one and a 1" separation at the second fold, otherwise very good. British poet and illustrator who, at age 20, founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais.

Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) was a distinguished naval officer and novelist. While at sea, Marryat wrote and in 1829 published The Naval Officer, or, Scenes and Adventures in the Life of Frank Mildmay. The vivid and lifelike narrative of naval adventure, much of which he had experienced, took the public by storm: the book was a literary and financial success. He had already written The King's Own (published in 1830), and, having settled down to his new profession of literature, he rapidly produced Newton Forster (1832); Peter Simple and Jacob Faithful (both 1834); The Pacha of many Tales (1835); Mr. Midshipman Easy, Japhet in Search of a Father, The Pirate and the Three Cutters (all 1836); Snarleyyow, or, The Dog Fiend (1837); The Phantom Ship (1839); Poor Jack (1840); Joseph … [Click Below for Full Description]

FREDERICK A. EUSTIS
1862. FREDERICK A. EUSTIS.Archive, primarily regarding management of South Carolina Sea Island cotton plantation, 1862-1865; entire archive, 1836-1918. In 1862, when Harvard-educated Frederick A. Eustis learned that his step-mother's South Carolina cotton plantations were going to ruin and that the enslaved African Americans there were suffering, he decided to visit to see for himself. His stepmother had died in 1860, and the executors of her estate were committed Confederates. What Eustis saw and heard on the coast of South Carolina led him to stay to protect the family property. General William T. Sherman gave Eustis written permission to hold his stepmother's plantation on Lady's Island and two others--the Gibbs Plantation on Lady's Island and the Fuller Plantation on Wassa Island.Though he had some antebellum experience in helping to manage his stepmother's plantation on annual visits, it was a challenging task for Eustis to oversee the production of crops on multiple plantations as the area transitioned from slave to free labor. The notebooks in this archive offer insights into his careful management and distribution of labor and the planning that went into his efforts. In 1863, when the federal government sought to sell this plantation and many others, Eustis paid the back taxes to preserve it as part of his stepmother's estate rather than purchase the plantation outright at auction for himself. After the war, his brothers, other heirs, and the executors all questioned Eustis' motives, and Eustis found himself defending his actions in several l … [Click Below for Full Description]

COLLINS, Wilkie No Name London: Sampson Low, 1862. 8vo. 3 vols. Original scarlet cloth, blocked in blind, gilt title to spine; vol I. pp. x, 340; vol II. pp. iv, 364; vol III. pp. ii. 408; spines faded and light wear to covers (as is common), some discreet repairs to weak hinges, occasional foxing - a good copy of an book that rarely appears in the original state.First Edition. Published subsequent to the Woman in White, No-Name captures Collins at the height of his fame and success, and is considered one of his four great novels. Sampson Low paid Collins handsomely to secure the rights to No-Name, and printed a staggeringly large first run of 4000 copies, all but 400 of which were sold by the end of the first day after release. It was by far the most successful of his overly didactic works, dealing with the issue of illegitimacy in such a manner as to cause his critics to rail at the indecency of it all (as usual, to little avail). It remains the most successful of Collins' didactic works. Critics at the time were particularly displeased with the antics of the heroine (who has the temerity to set up a one woman stage show), but didn't seem to mind the rampant corruption trailing off the male characters like smoke from a garbage fire.#2103793

Jerry Thomas
New York: Dick & Fitzgerald. *RARE* 1st Edition Jerry Thomas Bartenders Manual 1862. Shipped with USPS Media Mail. Extremely RARE 1st Edition of The Bartender's Guide by Jerry Thomas 1862. Jerry Thomas (to whom the famous Savoy Cocktail Book is dedicated) presents 236 recipes for social drinks "apart from water and those of the breakfast and tea-table." "It struck us that a list of all the social drinks of America would really be one of the curiosities of jovial literature; and that if it was combined with a catalogue of the mixtures common to other nations [463 additional recipes, provided by Christian Schultz], and made practically useful by the addition of the concise description of the various processes for 'brewing' each, it would be a 'blessing to mankind.'" Before The Bar-Tender's Guide , knowledge of cocktails and their recipes was largely a matter of oral tradition in the United States; its author is today regarded as "the father of American mixology." This copy is marked with the price of $2.00, making it thus more rare as most first editions are found priced at $2.50. They were first marked at $1.50, then $2.00 as shown, then shortly after $2.50. Spine is in great condition, pages are bright and have had no repairs made. Book has been very well taken care of. No smells, minimal stains/ smudges. Very last page of the book is torn but was just a blank page. Pencil markings on inside cover are made of original owner's name dated from 1862. This is the best condition I have seen this particular book in! [Attributes: First Edition]

London, 1862. viii,184pp. plus folding map. Lacks the advertisements (4pp. total) at front and rear, found in some copies. 12mo. Modern half cloth and paper boards. Previous owner's ink stamp on verso of map, on titlepage, and on eight text leaves. Lightly age-toned. Very good overall, with the map in lovely condition. A rare guide to the gold fields of British Columbia, by the renowned British bibliographer and man of letters. Hazlitt had already written BRITISH COLUMBIA AND VANCOUVER ISLAND (1858), but in light of the gold discoveries in the region, he issued the present volume, an essentially new work. He describes the gold fields, mines, general prospects of the country, and offers advice to potential emigrants.
