[CALIFORNIA]. Soule, Franklin and P. R. Nicholls.
San Francisco: Printed & Published by Chas. F. Robbins, 1862. Lithography of George H. Baker. First edition, "2nd Thousand" printed above the title. Folio, color-lithographed pictorial cover and three pages of music. A song by San Francisco poet, journalist and chronicler Franklin Soulé (1810-1882) about the rescue of a little girl, Addie Manchester, from the burning wreck of the Steamship Golden Gate, which sank in flames off the coast of Mexico on July 27, 1862; over 200 people died. As soon as survivors returned to San Francisco, the story of the rescue became instant legend and Franklin Soulé further memorialized it with this song. Soulé has a permanent place in California history as one of the compilers of the famous Annals of San Francisco (1855). He was also a newspaper editor and a popular occasional poet and orator for the California Society of Pioneers, among other organizations. Paper a little browned and chipped at the edges; very good copy. Rare.

Cincinnati, 1862. 10 1/2 x 13 1/2. 100 leaves including title and preface; all printed rectos only. Original blind-stamped brown cloth. Binding soiled and shaken, front and rear endpapers creased, marginal stain in about first 25 pages. Collated complete. A good copy. A transitional time for this foundry which began life in 1817 as a western branch of White's Foundry. Wells writes in his Preface "In printing this book many of the older styles of type have been discarded, others are reduced in price from twenty to fifty percent. It has not been our aim to make a showhy book, but one as comprehensive as possiblee...This must be our excuse for the manner in which the pages are crowded." Half the specimen is devoted to type (mostly display faces) and balance for decorative material and vignettes. Rare, as are all Cincinnati specimens; those published before 1880 are especially so. In the earlier part of the piece there is a tuneful, Mendelssohnian duet for soprano and alto, and some dramatic writing for solo bass including, most unusually for Schumann, a short passage of recitative. Further variety is achieved by the imaginative use of a large orchestra. This is a work which would justify an occasional revival." Alan Walker: Robert Schumann … [Click Below for Full Description]

Near fine. Complete with both fold-outs. Internally fine. Item #965 A very nice copy of this classic travel narrative, of Burton's visit to Brigham Young's Salt Lake. "An outstanding narrative of Western travel published in London, 1861, (perhaps more often seen in the New York, 1862, edition) is Richard F. Burton's 'The City of the Saints and across the Rocky Mountains to California.' Already celebrated for his travels to the 'holy cities' of the Old World, Burton made a pilgrimage in 1860 to Great Salt Lake City, taking the overland stage from St. Joseph, and after a few weeks among the Mormons, going on to San Francisco via the Comstock." - Carl Wheat. Richmond: Weston & Johnston, 1862. xxiv,[25]-559pp. plus 82 plates and [5] fold-out plates. Hardcover bound in original blue cloth, stamped in blind, spine stamped in faded gilt. Soling and dampstaining to covers (see pics). Light toning, scattered foxing throughout. Binding is strong. Some minor edge chips to some of the fold-out plates, as can be seen along the edge, some weren't folded back correctly. None the of the chipping appears to effect the text or drawings on the plates that I can tell. The second, supplemented, edition of this Confederate published guide to soldiering and the art of war, with 82 plates not in the first edition of the previous year. Gilham served in the Confederate Army and was a teacher at the Virginia Military Institute. His manual covers topics such as instructions for skirmishes, target practice, marching, and army organization. This edition features an addendum with eighty-seven plates illustrating items such as proper shooting positions, order in battery, and sketches of artillery. Gilham's manual continued to be used into the 21st century and is considered an invaluable piece of Confederate military history. CRANDALL 2419. [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry David Thoreau 1862 First Edition Ticknor & Fields Boston
Ticknor and Fields, 1862. I left the woods for as good a reason as I went there. Perhaps it seemed to me that I had several more lives to live, and could not spare any more time for that one. It is remarkable how easily and insensibly we fall into a particular route, and make a beaten track for ourselves. I had not lived there a week before my feet wore a path from my door to the pondside; and though it is five or six years years since I trod it, it is still quite distinct. It is true, I fear, that others may have fallen into it, and so helped to keep it open. The surface of the earth is soft and impressible by the feet of men; and so with the paths which the mind travels. How worn and dusty, then, must be the highways of the world, how deep the ruts of tradition and conformity! I did not wish to take a cabin passage, but rather to go before the mast and on the deck of the world, for there I could best see the moonlight amid the mountains. I do not wish to go below now. Here we offer a rare first edition of the classic, canonical reflection on self-reliance, Henry David Thoreau's American classic, Walden, published in 1862 by Ticknor and Fields, Boston. The first printing was in 1854, and those 2,000 copies were not exhausted until this second printing was run on March 21, 1862, shortly before his death on May 6, 1862. Thoreau requested the words "or, Life in the Woods" be eliminated from the title page of this printing, which used the stereotype plates of the first printing with the revised title-page. This book is bound in the original-state first edition signature T & F … [Click Below for Full Description]

PASTEUR, LOUIS
Ch. Lahure et Cie, Paris, 1862. PRESENTATION COPY AND ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE RARE AUTHOR'S OFFPRINT OF PASTEUR'S FAMOUS LECTURE DISCREDITING THE THEORY OF SPONTANEOUS GENERATION, WITH HIS AUTOGRAPH NOTES TO FELLOW-SCIENTIST JOHN TYNDALL. Spontaneous generation - the theory that living organisms are routinely created from inanimate matter - goes back to ancient times. Although the theory had been cast into doubt by the observations and experimental work of Redi, Spallanzani, and others in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it proved remarkably hard to kill, and still had many distinguished adherents in the early nineteenth century. In part its persistence was due to the rise of microscopy, which had revealed a host of previously unknown organisms, with no apparent origin, in soil, pond water, and other natural environments. Where had these organisms come from, if they had not been spontaneously generated? In part it was due to bona fide disputes over experimental techniques, with opponents of the theory arguing that demonstrations of the spontaneous generation of microorganisms in supposedly sterile nutrient media were merely the result of contamination or inadequate sterilization; and proponents of the theory arguing that the failure of microorganisms to grow in sterilized nutrient media in sealed flasks was the result either of damage to some vital ingredient in the medium resulting from the heat-sterilization process, or of the fact that the medium did not have access to oxygen or to some other factor in the air that was necessary to support spontaneous generation … [Click Below for Full Description]
