Tennyson, Alfred Lord
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1862. Finely bound example of The Poetical Works of Alfred Tennyson. Small octavo, bound in full morocco with elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in five compartments, red morocco spine label lettered in gilt, gilt ruling to the panels, gilt turn-ins, all edges marbled, engraved frontispiece portrait of Tennyson. In near fine condition. A superior example. As source material for his poetry, Tennyson used a wide range of subject matter ranging from medieval legends to classical myths and from domestic situations to observations of nature. The influence of John Keats and other Romantic poets published before and during his childhood is evident from the richness of his imagery and descriptive writing. He also handled rhythm masterfully. The insistent beat of Break, Break, Break emphasizes the relentless sadness of the subject matter. Tennyson's use of the musical qualities of words to emphasize his rhythms and meanings is sensitive. Tennyson was a craftsman who polished and revised his manuscripts extensively, to the point where his efforts at self-editing were described by his contemporary Robert Browning as "insane", symptomatic of "mental infirmity." Few poets have used such a variety of styles with such an exact understanding of metre; like many Victorian poets, he experimented in adapting the quantitative metres of Greek and Latin poetry to English. He reflects the Victorian period of his maturity in his feeling for order and his tendency towards moralizing. He also reflects a concern common among Victorian writers in being troubled by the con … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Supreme Court of Texas, 1862]
Houston: Webb & Jarum, Attorneys for the Defendant, 1862. Very good. Two separate manuscript drafts on leaves of lined legal paper held together by a strip of paste near the top edge; verso of last leaf of both copies docketed with short title and the case number (?) 1826. First draft, 3 pages of text; second, 4 pages of text, plus a blank page. 12-1/16" x 7-15/16". Three fold lines; light creasing to first draft; occasional inks mudges, not affecting readability. Civil War-era Fratricide, Texas Style. Two holograph briefs, both dated Feb. 7th, 1862, appealing Henry Wade's conviction for the murder of his brother, William. The shorter brief appears to be an earlier draft; the longer one, more cohesively argued, a later version. The briefs detail the circumstances of William's death, as well as perceived faults of the original trial, and argue that Wade's sentence should be reduced to manslaughter. According to both briefs, the basic facts of the case are as follows: late one night, Henry left the brothers' house in a drunken state, and William attempted to bring him back inside. Words were exchanged, the brothers fought, and Henry retrieved a pistol from his room; when William tried to attack Henry with a chair, Henry shot and killed him.

The drafts employ the same basic arguments to shift the responsibility for the fight to William and to the judge during the trial, but differ in structure, detail, emphasis of points of contention (the judge being the primary complaint in the presumed earlier draft), formality of address, and reliance on the testimony of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mahan, D.H.
Richmond: West & Johnston, 1862. [iii]-xxvii,[1],168pp. plus twelve folding plates, each with an inserted leaf of explanation. Lacks the initial blank leaf [p. i-ii]. 12mo. Contemporary quarter morocco and coated paper, gilt label. Boards rubbed, edges shelfworn, corners bumped, label chipped and rubbed. Front hinge cracked, but still strong. Text lightly toned, a bit of light foxing, but quite neat internally. Plate eleven reinforced at folds on verso. Good plus. "Fourth edition, revised and enlarged," and the only Confederate printing of Mahan's important and influential treatise on field fortification, as the original New York publishers (Wiley) would not sell to the Confederacy. Dennis Hart Mahan (1802-1871), noted military theorist and father of naval strategist Alfred Thayer Mahan, was a professor at West Point for more than forty-five years. He published this treatise on field fortifications, his first published book, in 1836, and it went through several printings before the outbreak of the Civil War. During Mahan's time at West Point, about two thousand cadets graduated, and every student took Mahan's course on field operations, fortifications, and leadership during his final year at the academy, using this work as the main textbook. This book was "the standard work on this subject carried into the field by United States officers in both the Mexican and Civil wars" (DAB). Mahan was a proud Virginian, but did not support the Confederacy. He corresponded with numerous generals during the war, stressing loyalty to West Point, the army, and the nation, as well as … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guthrie 1862 Medicine 2 Copies Civil War
1862. both volumes complete, original cloth with expected wear, one volume with small portion of backstrip flapping, interior mostly clean, good overall. 2 Copies of Guthrie's Surgery of War from 1862 First American edition used heavily during the American Civil War One of the copies with provenance: Signed by Nelson R. Barnes (1835 - 1900) who was assistant surgeon in the 76th New York Volunteers - likely this was his working copy used in the field of battle Single Copies listed online up to $850! Title: Commentaries on the Surgery of the War in Portugal, Spain, France, and the Netherlands Author: Guthrie, G.J. (George James) Published by Lippincott, Philadelphia, 1862 Octavo. Sixth edition. 614 pages, illustrations This book was quickly printed from the London 1855 edition for use of surgeons in the Civil War. It began with a general treatment on gunshot wounds which very few physicians had dealt with prior to the war. Later in the year in a very small print run Thomas Longmore's Treatise on Gunshot Wounds would appear but this work was the primary one in makeshift field hospitals while Longmore which once printed was often destroyed as blood, filth, etc. were encrusted as physicans worked sometimes day and into the night hours. While this work began with what had been observed in the Crimean War, Longmore would distinguish wounds from the variations between the Enfield and Whitworth rifles. As in the case of most medical volumes published in the Civil War, they truly became working volumes.

CHOUMARA, Pierre-Marie Théodore.
Jordan 0699; A.F. Lendy, Treatise on fortification (1862), p. 423; WorldCat (9 copies). First edition of a work on fortification by the French military engineer Pierre-Marie Théodore Choumara (1787-1870). It examines the characteristics and shortcomings of various French forts, giving suggestions for improvement at low cost. "That which distinguishes Choumara from other writers on the science, is the objection he has to supersede everything by the introduction of a new system; his constant endeavour is to modify the fortresses already extant, in order to increase their power and resistance" (Lendy). Other chapters deal with the attack and defence of an hexagon-shaped fort, the number of soldiers needed to defend a fort and the type of armour required. The atlas volume contains three large folding lithographed plates, showing different types of bastions and an attack plan. Both text and atlas volume somewhat foxed, a few small spots. 1862. In this part-printed document signed, Robert H. Pruyn is appointed "Minister Resident" to Japan. Abraham Lincoln, as President, has signed boldly at the lower right, as well as, William H. Seward as Secretary of State. Several years after Commodore Perry signed the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Peace (1854) the first American diplomat to Japan, Townsend Harris, presented his credentials to the Shogun (1858). After he departed in 1862, Robert H. Pruyn assumed the Resident Minister duties which he held during the rest of Lincoln's administration and the Civil War. Sheet of paper measures: 12" x 17 3/4". Document is marked "duplicate" in manuscript at the upper left. We are not sure of the protocol related to this. Was one lost? Was one created to travel to Japan and another to be retained at home? Condition: Fold lines, overall toned (especially around perimeter); exceptionally strong signature. ** Please contact us for a shipping quote. Measures a little over 6.5" x 4.25" (16.75cm x 10.75cm). (iv) + 154pp, plus 16pp publisher's catalogue to rear. A quirky very early guide to the experience of railway travel, with tips on preparation, conduct and deportment; what to expect every step of the way, including how to deal with staring fellow travellers who might intimidate the easily abashed or the 'softer sex'; and essentials such as the 'Disposal of Ladies and Children.' An untentionally whimsical field guide for the unseasoned Victorian traveller by rail, of which we can find no other original copies on the market; with just one known copy housed in the Illinois University Library, USA. Condition: Spine's paper covering absent, with the rear board hinge showing gauze and narrow fracture at fore edge of upper board, though nothing too offensive. Both boards remain soundly in situ, whilst showing rubbing, edge-scuffing and discolouration commensurate with age. Text-block sound, with no loose or absent leaves. Contents complete. Foxing, tanning and marking to prelims and occasionally thereon. Leaves tanned, mainly marginal. The last couple of leaves and the rear endpaper have creased corners.
