John Gould
London 1862 - John Gould (1804-1881)A selection from Birds of Great Britain, published in London 1862-73. Hand-colored lithograph measuring 14 1/2” x 21 1/2”. Condition: Some very minor and light age spots. John Gould was without question the most prolific natural history artist of the nineteenth century. He worked during a period of intense fascination with discoveries in natural history, especially regarding knowledge of the wildlife of exotic lands. Gould shared the romantic enthusiasm of his time for such subjects, as well as the popular impulse to catalogue exotic wildlife. He combined his passion for natural history with outstanding scientific, artistic, and entrepreneurial talents. Drawing on these abilities, he embarked on a series of projects that would eventually make him the leading publisher of ornithological illustrations in Victorian Britain. Gould’s unparalleled career spanned five decades, and he produced a monumental series of books of birds throughout the world. Gould described the Birds of Great Britain as a return to his old love of native birds and was especially proud of this work. Unlike in earlier publications, however, the illustrations incorporate more nests, eggs, and young than the earlier works, with a focus on landscapes and family groupings. The ornithologist and his collaborators took more of an interest in creating accurate, appropriate settings, and included more plants and fully delineated environments, resulting in a number of lavish scenes of action and interaction. Gould's rightful pride in these illustrations was reflect … [Click Below for Full Description]

Government Printer, Sydney 1862 - Foolscap folio, 6 pages. Drop-title; small holes in the inner margins where stab-sewn when bound (now disbound), with secondary page numbers (1091-1096) stamped in the top corners; a fine copy. The despatches, from the Duke of Newcastle, the incumbent Secretary of State for the Colonies, concern whether 'the northern part of Australia should be formed into a new Colony, or that a portion of the territory in question should be annexed to Queensland'. Newcastle's recommendation was 'to annex to South Australia so much of this territory as lies south of the tropic, and to attach the rest of it provisionally to Queensland'. As it turned out, the Northern Territory of South Australia came into being in 1863, annexing all the relevant land both north and south of the Tropic of Capricorn. This annexed land was eventually surrendered to the Commonwealth in 1911. New South Wales Parliamentary Paper 708-A of 1862. Cf. Heirs of Hippocrates, 2099 (2ème partie seule) :"Péan was a prominent nineteenth-century Parisian surgeon noted for performing the first surgical gastrectomy for carcinoma and the invention of a hemostat which is still being used today, although in a form greatly modified from the original model depicted in this book. The modern Péan forceps has long shanks, is serrated, and is used mainly in pelvic and abdominal surgery. In the book, Deny and Exchaquet give a short history of the development of instruments for the control of hemorrhage and recount the advantages of Péan s clamp. Various types of hemostatic forceps of the time are illustrated and the Péan forceps is pictured removing a uterine polyp, a testicular tumor, and tumors of the face, tongue, and lip." ; Rutkow, Surgery : an illustrated history, p. 423 : "His name is associated with a clamp intended to obtain hemostasis … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tennyson, Alfred Lord
n.p. [Toronto?]: privately printed [by J. Dykes Campbell], 1862. Small 4to, pp. viii, 112; original blue printed wrappers; some cracking along the upper joint, but in all a very good copy. A pirated edition of poems, poems which Tennyson had previously published in his collections of 1830 and 1833 but which he later surpressed for the collected edition of 1842. These were compiled and edited by J. Dykes Campbell who published this small edition at his own expense. Copies were put on the market by John Camden Hotten, touting them as "the choice poems that have been dropped or thrown aside by the Poet during his literary career...an exceedingly limited number of copies..." Tennyson brough suit against Hotten for breach of copyright, and Hotten was forced to make an apology, pay a fine of £100, and deliver up all copies for destruction. The McGill University record notes that this was the first prirated edition of any of Tennyson's poems, and was printed in an edition of 150 copies in Toronto by W. C. Chewett & Co.

Lincoln and Johnson's controversial secretary of war (1862-68). Pioneering photographer MATHEW B. BRADY (1823-96) photographed Stanton on more than one occasion. Original first-generation Brady print made off the original glass-plate negative by pioneering 20th century photography historian/collector FREDERICK HILL MESERVE (1865-1962). Known as "America's first great photograph collector," Meserve saved countless original Brady and other negatives from destruction and assigned numbers to Lincoln photographs ("Meserve numbers") still used today. Heavy stock 8" X 10", n.p., n.y. [ca. 1940s]. Very good. Slightest bit of quite minor edgewear. Well-known studio portrait showing Stanton from mid-chest up, gazing at the viewer. On the verso, near the bottom, Meserve boldly pencils (as was his habit) in his distinctive hand: "Edwin M. Stanton / Enlarged from an original glass / negative by Brady / the Meserve Collection." The clarity of these first-generation prints is stunning, especially if you''re used to seeing umpteenth-generation copies of copies of copies published in books and other forms. Prints produced from the original negative show an immediacy not seen anywhere else, displaying details lacking in later generation washed-out reproductions. A scarce and striking image printed from the original Mathew Brady negative by the preeminent photography historian of the 20th century.

Doylestown, PA, : Hatborough Monumental Association/ W.W.H. Davis, Printer, 1862. Hatborough Monumental Association/ W.W.H. Davis, Printer, Doylestown, PA, 1862; First Edition; tall 8vo, 12 pages. Address given by Rev. Jacob Belville at the dedication of the Hatborough Monument, December 5, 1861, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, to commemorate the Revolutionary War "Battle Of The Crooked Billet," which took place May 1, 1778, in which Brigadier General John Lacey's American detachment was surprised at daybreak and put to flight by Col. Abercrombie's British regulars and Major Simcoe's Queen's Rangers, killing twenty-eight Americans, many of them cruelly burned alive as they attempted to hide in haystacks and wheat fields of neighboring farms. A stirring and impassioned speech, calling attention to the War Between The States, then in its infancy, and making an earnest plea for the preservation of the Union for which the Revolutionary War heroes had fought and died. Includes a full description of the dedication proceedings, the names and titles of all speakers, a detailed description of the monument and inscriptions engraved upon it, and a biography of General Lacey who was, interestingly, a Quaker. Bound in 3/4 leather with raised bands, morocco spine label, gilt titles, marbled boards and marbled end papers. Original wraps bound in. Bookplate of notable 19th century bibliophile Joseph Y. Jeanes (1859-1928) on front pastedown. Impressive, early, large-scale map of central Iraq, showing the area between Al Hillah (100 km south of Baghdad) to the ruins of the ancient Sumerian city of Nippur. Includes inset plans and views of Tel Ibrahim, Zibbleyeh, Nejmi, Niffer, and the Niffer Mounds. - Some paper defects and edge damage restored. Rare; copies are known in no more than two public collections (Bodleian; British Library). Personal copy of the cartographer William Collingwood, signed by himself as well as by Cdr. W. B. Selby, R.I.N. - Selby began his distinguished surveying career in 1837 when, as a midshipman, he embarked on the expedition first to lay navigation buoys in the mouths of the Indus River and then to chart some coastal areas in the Horn of Africa. By 1846 he was back working off the mouth of the Indus, having made his reputation in Mesopotamia (in 1840-41), and thereafter achieved considerable acclaim for his numerous other surveys, including those during the military expedition to Persia in 1856, before returning to England at the end of 1862. He was succeeded as Surveyor of Mesopotamia by his protégé, Lt. William Collingwood (a distant cousin of the Admiral), who had already done much valuable work in the region, including the large-scale, though surreptitious, mapping of Baghdad in 1855, described by him as follows: "The survey of the city of Baghdad was completed entirely by myself and under very unpleasant restricti … [Click Below for Full Description]
