DARWIN (Charles).
[Click Below for Full Description]

DUBINI, Angelo (1813-1902).
[Click Below for Full Description]

CATHERINE VERSCHOYLE [1802-1882].
In orig. domed mount 5.5 x 8.5in 1862 - Inscribed below, in ink, presumably by photographer, 'Madresfield Court Photod Cathne Verschoyle Septr 1862'. Catherine Verschoyle, nŽe Curtis, was the wife of Robert Verschoyle, a barrister in London descended from a branch of the Dutch family who began settling in Ireland in the early seventeenth century. In 1839 CatherineÕs portrait was included in HeathÕs 'Book of Beauty', and she was praised not only for her beauty but also for her sweet singing voice. She was an accomplished watercolour painter before taking up photography. She became one of the earliest members of the Photographic Society in London, especially notable for a woman, being accepted for membership in April 1853. In the societyÕs 1854 exhibition, she contributed three collodion views of Holland Park and one calotype, 'Cedars in Holland Park'. Catherine Verschoyle continued to exhibit a wide variety of subjects until at least 1863, at which time the 'British Journal of Photography' placed her 'amongst our landscape photographists of repute'. Her son, Colonel Henry William Verschoyle [1835-1870], acquired her drawing and photographic skills. He served in the Crimea and became an exhibiting member of the Photographic Society. At times this photograph has been attributed to Henry, her son. This photograph being dated 1862 was before the alterations to Madresfield started in 1863 under the architect P.C. Hardwick. Madresfield was often visited by Evelyn Waugh and has been taken to be the model for the house in 'Brideshead Revisited'.Provenance: Cefntilla Court, Lland … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blanche Clough was a cousin of Florence Nightingale, whom Arthur Clough assisted in her campaign to reform military hospitals and escorted "to Calais in 1854 on her first voyage to the Crimea" (ODNB). Originally issued in January 1849 as Ambarvalia, a collection of verse by Clough and his Cambridge friend Thomas Burbidge, the book was reissued in 1850 from the original sheets with Burbidge's poems omitted and a simple fly-title, "Poems / by / Arthur H. Fischer, Theodor - Winfried Nerdinger
4, 348 S., zahlr., selten farb. Abb., Pläne, Brosch., Min. gebrauchsspurig, tadellos. EA. Mit ca. 200 S. Werkverzeichnis Bibliographie. - Theodor Fischer (28. Mai 1862 in Schweinfurt - 25.

London: Robert Hardwicke, 1862. Octavo. Original green ribbed cloth, spine lettered in gilt, covers panelled in blind, brown endpapers. Spine ends bumped, hinges slightly cracked, one signature standing slightly proud, else an excellent copy. First edition in book form. In 1861 Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–1895) gave a series of lectures on evolution and human ancestry to London's workers, where he defended Darwinism. Transcripts of his talks on the Origin of Species were published by Robert Hardwicke in weekly pamphlets, before being collected into this volume. Law, William - Recipient Miser (?), E D - Writer
1862. Faint horizontal fold-lines.. 6 pages, the first 5 with ~ 20 lines per page, 8 words per line, ~ 800 words total. Last page with directions/address for sending a reply. Writing clear & distinct. 7-1/2" x 4-5/8" James M. Cory, James M. Braly and E.R. Hicks founded Aurora in 1860, which rose to quick prominence with the discovery of gold & silver. At one point its population was approximately 10,000, with the mines producing $27 million worth of gold by 1869. The town was governed by both California and Nevada until it was determined that the town lay entirely in Nevada. At one point it was simultaneously the county seat of both Mono County, California and Esmeralda County, Nevada. This a letter from Aurora during that short period it was under California control, wherein the writer describes life in a mining town, including detail on the value of his partial claims, which could be traded in San Francisco, and on the cost of food, which, more often than not, came all the way from San Francisco. Today Aurora is a ghost town.

Dunant, J. Henry [Jean Henri]
Joel Cherbuliez, Librarire. Brockhaus. Printing and the Mind of Man, 350

Kirchhoff, Gustav.
(Berlin Dümmler ) 1862 - (27,5 x 23 cm). SS. (63)-95. - DSB 7, 379; PMM 278b; Sparrrow 117; Norman 1219; Horblit 59 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Kazan': V Tipografii Gubernskogo Pravleniia, 1862. Octavo (23 × 14.5 cm). Contemporary quarter-calf with title to spine; red marbled paper boards; VII, 438, II pp. Book plate and shelf label of the Imperial Nikolaevsky Orphanage library in Gatchina, dissolved after the 1917 Revolution, and a later private bookplate. Boards lightly rubbed; light foxing throughout; a touch musty; good or better. First printed appearance in Russia of the full text of the "Stoglav" (literally: "hundred chapters"), which had previously only been printed in exile in a very small print run (London, 1860). In 1551, Ivan the Terrible "summoned a synod of the Russian Church to discuss the ritual practices that had grown up in Russia which did not conform with those of the Greek Church. The decrees issued by the Synod, known as the Stoglav, rule that they were all correct. This unilaterial decision shocked many of the Orthodox. The monks of Athos protested and the Russian monks there regarded the decisions of the synods as invalid" (Runciman, The Great Church in Captivity, p. 329). The text of the Stoglav takes the form of a series of questions by the Tsar, followed by the answers of the Orthodox clergy. It formed the basic set of rules of day-to-day life of the Muscovite clergy and was circulated through numerous manuscript copies. Its content touched not only questions of Church dogma, but also of socio-economic and political concern. A number of the decisions of the Stoglav were revised by a council convened in 1666-1667, especially those which concerned the practices of the Old Believers, such as … [Click Below for Full Description]
