He showed that the orchid's beauty was not a piece of floral whimsy 'designed' by God to please humans but honed by selection to attract insect cross-pollinators. SARA H. WYMOND
BROOKLYN PORT JERVIS NEW YORK PITTSFIELD MASS: (1862). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a fascinating pair [2] of original Civil War Era manuscript diaries handwritten by a late teenage, then 20 year old woman named Sara H. Wymond of Brooklyn New York and then later at Deer Park Female Institute, Port Jervis, New York to West Chester and Pittsfield Massachusetts. The books are a charming combination of her personal thoughts and activities, friends socialized with, as well as she pours out her sensibilities of happiness and unhappiness, [depending upon her then present living circumstances] with poetry and copied excerpts of readings she loved. Sara proves to be an introspective young woman perhaps internalizing too many of her problems. Moving schools was an alienating experience and something she might have sought counselling in modern times. The dates range from 1862 - 1866 thusly right in the Civil War times but they hardly seem to affect her at all. Square 8vo, leather backed marbled boards, mild rubbing, approximately 60 pages and 64 pages all told. Overall G.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good

HAECKEL, ERNST
Berlin: Georg Reimer, 1862. First edition. VERY RARE COMPLETE SET, WITH 141 LITHOGRAPHED FOLIO PLATES. Complete set of the monograph, including the rare first volume, with a total of 141 beautiful lithographed plates (some colored) after drawings by the author, biologist-artist Ernst Haeckel, based on his microscopic observations of radiolarian species. "Radiolarians are an ancient group of single-celled organisms that have existed since the Proterozoic eon in Precambrian time... Radiolarians are free-swimming protozoa that occur in all the world's oceans. They are microscopically small, with only some forms reaching a few millimetres in size. Although related to amoebas... radiolarians frequently possess a spherical or helmet-like skeleton whose diversity of form fascinated the German zoologist Ernst Haeckel" (Olaf Breidbach, Ernst Haeckel: Art Forms from the Ocean: The Radiolarian Atlas of 1862). "At the end of November [1859], with just a few months left for his research in Italy, Haeckel finally decided to focus on just one group of animals, the almost unknown radiolaria. .... Initially Haeckel prepared a report on his radiolarian work, which [Wilhelm Peters] presented to the [Berlin Academy of Sciences]... All of this was reiterated, with an elaboration of the systematics of the known species, in Haeckel's Habilitationsschrift, rendered into Latin and completed in 1861. Yet neither the readers of the academy report nor of the Habilitationsschrift would have been prepared for the large two-volume monograph Haeckel produced in 1862... The first two of these exercises ann … [Click Below for Full Description]

A STRANGE STORY stands behind most more recent novels of magic or of personality change ..." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction, p. 87 (also described as entry 305). "The novel itself is a real triumph, in the end subordinating all the occult machinery, including a full-scale alchemical and Rosicrucian distillation of the elixir of life, to the strongly-based philosophical and religious arguments for the immortali … [Click Below for Full Description]

I have not seen any of the ? boys since I left Shiloh...""June 23 1862: ""General Sherman has been & still is quite sick with Bilous fever. The Medical Director has asked for and obtained a leave of absense for him self. He has proposed my self for the position... Genl Grant is in command. I expect you will feel bad if I don't get a leave but it wont be my fault if I don't. ... Tightly bound with cloth or thick paper spine, possibly a later embellishment. Covers lightly soiled; very good, clean condition. "By Authority of the Monte Videan Government." A booklet evidently prepared for distribution at the Great London Exposition of 1862. Chapters include Memoranda for Emigrants: the Voyage Out; the Introduction, wherein it is written "The little knowledge possessed in Europe of the economical and political institutions of this fine country, have determined the publication of the geographical and statistical information contained in these pages"; following is the main chapter, The Republic of Uruguay, Monte Video, Geographical, Social, and Political which details climate, vegetable productions, trees (utility of), minerals, animals (race horses and fine wool etc.), institutions (hospitals, schools), land and water communication, post offices, commerce, summary of professions, details of the various departments, etc. There follows a chapter Life in the River Plate and a Catalogue of the Articles Exhibited in the Uruguay Department, International Exhibition, London 1862, with information on Jury Awards. TROLLOPE, Anthony.
London: Chapman and Hall, 1862. 2 volumes, octavo. Original purple wavy-grained cloth, the grain running perpendicularly for both volumes, covers blocked with conventional frame design in blind, on spines with farming designs and lettered in gold, pale yellow endpapers. Spines inevitably and very lightly sunned, a fine set: rare thus. Without publisher's catalogue sometimes found at end of vol. I ("cannot be regarded as essential" – Sadleir); 40 wood-engraved illustrations, with first state captions throughout. First edition, first issue, an exceptionally good copy. Unusually, the two volumes were published nearly ten months apart, and subsequent re-issues of each volume did not proceed in step, with the result is that sets often have the two volumes in mismatched issues. Sadleir claims priority for copies with the grain of the cloth perpendicular for vol. I and horizontal for vol. II, but his bibliographical reasoning is, for once, unconvincing. The text in both volumes of this set conforms entirely to the first issue (i.e. copies bound from parts), in matching bindings in which the grain of the cloth runs perpendicularly on both. Millais, John Everett
n.p.: n.p., [1862]. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. An interesting collection of forty superb wood engravings by Pre-Raphaelite artist John Everett Millais. Millais was one of the most important and prolific nineteenth century illustrators. He illustrated texts by Anthony Trollope, Harriet Martineau, Alfred Lord Tennyson, among many others, working closely with important wood engravers such as the Dalziels. This rare volume is likely a private compilation by an admirer or even a close associate of Millais. The illustrations are from various sources including "Sister Anna's Probation, from a novella by Harriet Martineau and first appearing in "Once a Week' on March 22, 1862 as well as an illustration for Rosa Mulholland's "Irene" appearing in the Cornhill Magazine, 1862. A large folio bound by well known binders Hayday and Mansell in full pebbled black morocco binding with gilt lettering "Millais 1862" on cover, concentric gilt rules on covers, dentelles and spine. Light scuffing. There is a vellum sheet just preceding the engravings, which are mounted on thick card stock pages, each surrounded by a single gilt-ruled border. The pastedowns and free endpapers have some foxing and offsetting from the dentelles. The first two plates have some light spotting but the others are near fine. A lovely collection in very good condition. PRERAPH/011618.

Full brown morocco, raised bands, gilt rules, gilt inner dentelles, with Albert's crest in gilt on upper cover. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Presentation copy from Queen Victoria, inscribed on the first blank: "To Colonel Sir Alfred Horsford KCS Deputy Adjutant General - In recollection of the great and good Prince who was so proud of His Rifle Brigade from His brokenhearted Widow - Victoria R - Feb: 12,1865." The third edition was the first to contain a section entitled "The Office of Commander-in-Chief" in which is related the attempt to persuade Albert to take the post, which, after giving it some thought, he declined. It is to this that Victoria refers in her inscription. The recipient served with the 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade inthe Kaffir War, after which he commanded the battalion and served with it in the Crimea. Also he was present in the first stages of the siege of Sebastopol. Cover edges just a little rubbed. Very good indeed. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

TOMES, Robert
1862 1ed War with the South CIVIL WAR Military Tomes Illustrated Gettysburg MAP The American Civil War played an important role in the expansion and growth of book publication in the United States, as people were craving an understanding of the conflict. Robert Tomes began publishing a subscription book that would give insight to the war, but he believed his work would help end the battles quickly. It didn’t. “The War with the South” saw print in dozens of separate parts during the height of the Civil War. This incredible first edition set is an impressive account of the Civil War, written solely from a Northern perspective. According to Nevins, this work is “a wartime publication, this set presents a purely Northern viewpoint; rather heavy on politics.” In addition to the fascinating contents, this beautifully bound work features full-page engravings and maps including a highly desirable battle-tactics map of the Battle of Gettysburg! Van Lennep, H.J.
New York, 1862. Seventeen loose plates, listed by numbering order on contents leaf. Very good. One of the relatively few American costume books, and certainly the best such created in 19th-century America. This is a notable and unusual instance of the taste for "Turkish" which manifested itself in the furniture of the period, but seldom in books. In terms of American color plate books, this is one of the only large projects from the 1860s, when the Civil War seems to have curtailed production of such lavish enterprises. "The one really big chromolithographic book of this decade...the art is simple, but [Charles] Parson's hand is obvious in the good lithography, and Endicott's printing is well done for its time" - McGrath. [BURKE & WILLS SEARCH EXPEDITION] BOURNE, George.
Melbourne: H. T. Dwight, 1862. Octavo, 54 pp. (last blank), an excellent copy in the original printed yellow wrappers; preserved in a blue quarter calf box. Rare first edition: this alternative account of the Landsborough expedition - sent to locate Burke and Wills in Northern Australia -- was written by the second-in-command George Bourne. The sole independent source on the expedition, 'it must be considered an essential adjunct to Landsborough's official narrative and every collector should seek out a copy' (Australian Rare Books). Bourne's narrative forms the only independent account of an inconclusive - and sometimes controversial - expedition that was well publicised by its leader. Bourne, an experienced bushman, had this narrative edited for the press by E.M. Curr, who in the process of preparing it for publication did not omit Bourne's criticism of his erstwhile leader.Bourne's book was issued in two states by Melbourne publisher H.T. Dwight. This copy is the issue in yellow titling wrappers with advertisements for books by the Reverend Woods printed inside the front and rear covers. Not surprisingly, it is considerably harder to find than Landsborough's narrative, especially in such crisp original condition. Slight wear to spine and lower wrapper a little creased but a fine bright copy in very good original state.

[BURKE & WILLS SEARCH EXPEDITION] VICTORIAN PARLIAMENT.
Melbourne: John Ferres, Governmewnt Printer, 1862. Two reports bound together, foolscap folio, the first report with 52 pp. and three folding maps; the second 32 pp.; fine in recent quarter dark blue morocco by Sangorski. Two important Burke and Wills related reports, with the rare lithographic maps. The reports relate to two major relief parties sent in search of the missing explorers by Landsborough and Walker, and include the only contemporary printing of anything relating to Walker (Landsborough, a keener self-promoter, published his own account). The second report prints the coastal journal of Norman, captain of the Victoria. The Victoria had been sent to the Gulf of Carpentaria because of the belief that Burke and Wills were most likely lost in the far north. The first report includes three important and rare maps showing Albert River, Flinders River, and "Walker and Landsborough's Routes". Lithographed in Melbourne in April 1862, they were bound into only a limited number of copies, most probably prepared for parliamentarians and persons closely connected to the relief expedition. Landsborough, a seasoned explorer, struck out from the Albert River, and ultimately crossed the continent via Coopers Creek and Menindie, an important expedition in its own right. At the same time, Frederick Walker went inland from Rockhampton. Walker had served as a superintendent of native police at Wagga, and had become a sort of vigilante, but he was the one who found traces of Burke's encampment before returning to the east coast of Queensland on foot. The second report prints the jour … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nesfield, William Eden. [Geoghegan, Charles]
[London], Published by Day and Son, 1862. Folio (31 cm x 43 cm). 14 pages Index to the plates and 100 full page plates / Fantastic Illustrations. Original Hardcover with rich gilt ornament to front board. Spine missing. Very few pages cleanly detached. Complete and rare publication. This the copy from the library of Dublin Architect and Engineer Charles Geoghegan, with his name on the titlepage. William Eden Nesfield (2 April 1835 - 25 March 1888) was an English architect. Like his some-time partner, Richard Norman Shaw, he designed several houses in Britain in the revived ‚Old English' and ‚Queen Anne' styles during the 1860s and 1870s. He was also a designer and painter. William Eden Nesfield was born in Bath on 2 April 1835, the eldest son of the landscape architect and painter William Andrews Nesfield. He was educated at Eton College. In 1850 he was articled to the architect William Burn, but after two years he moved to the practice of his uncle by marriage, Anthony Salvin. He studied architectural drawing under James Kellaway Colling. He travelled widely in the 1850s, and published his drawings in Specimens of Mediaeval Architecture (1862), which was dedicated to William Craven, 2nd Earl of Craven. Around 1860 he started his own architectural practice; but he soon linked up with his friend Richard Norman Shaw, with whom he was in a formal partnership between 1866 and 1869, though they kept their jobs separate. Nesfield and Shaw contributed greatly to the new styles of domestic architecture in Britain, which began in the 1860s and flourished in the 1870s, notably the O … [Click Below for Full Description]
