VERDI, Giuseppe 1813-1901
La forza del destino, an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after Angel de Saavedra, Duke of Rivas's play Don Alvaro, o La fuerza del sino, with a scene from Friedrich von Schiller's play Wallensteins Lager, translated by Andrea Maffei, was first performed in St. Petersburg at the Imperial Theatre on 29 October/10 November 1862 and in a revised version, with additional text by Antonio Ghislanzoni in Milan at the Teatro alla Scala on February 27, 1869. The sets for this performance were by Ferrario. "La forza del destino reached something of a low point in the early years of this century, its sprawling action and mixture of comic, tragic and picturesque finding no resonance in a climate dominated by the Wagnerian model. But times have changed, and since the 1930s the opera has become one of the most popular of Verdi's works after the three middle-period masterpieces. This swing of fortune suggests an important shift in our expectations of what constitutes satisfying musical drama, because La forza is undoubtedly Verdi's most daring attempt at creating a 'patchwork' drama - or, as he once called it, an 'opera of ideas'. We look in vain for the kind of unifying colours found in Rigoletto or Il trovatore, and it is surely no accident that Verdi's 1869 revision could so radically change certain sequences in the action, even - as in Act 3 - transferring passages from one part of a scene to another. The opera is, in other words, only loosely linear: a significant precursor of 'native' Russian operas such as Prince Igor and Boris Godunov." … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clausius, R(udolf).
Leipzig Barth, 1862. (21,5 x 13,5 cm). (2) X, 660 S. Mit 8 gefalteten gestochenen Tafeln. Dekorativer Halblederband der Zeit. Erste Ausgabe. "Clausius later gave more careful scruting to Maxwell's arguments and found an error that Maxwell was to admit as far more serious. In his initial approach to the conduction of heat in gases, Maxwell drew a brilliant analogy between diffusion (a transfer of mass) and conduction (a transfer of kinetic energy), thereby making it possible to use the form of his diffusion equation to represent conduction, simply replacing the mass of a molecule with its kinetic energy. Clausius criticized this adoption of the diffusion equation, because, given the assumptions, mass transfer would accompany the heat conduction and the process would not be one of energy transfer alone. He then offered a revised theory of conduction" (DSB). - Stempel auf Titel. Vorsätze etwas leimschattig. Rücken gering fleckig, sonst sauber und wohlerhalten [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Presentation copy, inscribed by Meredith to Dante Gabriel Rossetti on the title-page: "Dante Gabriel Rossetti, from his friend, George Meredith" and with corrections in the author's hand. The Hayward exhibition copy, also inscribed and corrected, had a note in Merdith's hand apologizing for "Errata ennumerable".Meredith's novel Evan Harrington was serialized in Once a Week in 1860, and it was through contacts at the magazine that the author met Rossetti. Meredith's frequent London commitments in 1862-3 led to him spending Thursday nights at Rossetti's Chelsea home (where Swinburne was also a guest). Around this time, Meredith served as a model for Jesus in Rossetti's "Mary Magdalene at the gate of Simon the Pharisee".Modern Love - "the most painfully personal of his works" (ODNB) - is a 50-sonnet sequence which documents the breakdown of Meredith's first marriage. (LINCOLN, ABRAHAM.) Gardner, Alexander
Albumen silver print (7 x 9 in.), original printed mount with neat identifications of the figures in pencil. Surface lightly cleaned, mount trimmed at edge. A handsome example with the original printed Brady mount with title, copyright notice, "Gardner, Photographer," "M. B. Brady, Publisher," and date October 3, 1862. This photograph of Lincoln at Antietam is one of the best-known images of the Civil War. The Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. The Confederate withdrawal was sufficiently heartening for Lincoln to announce his Emancipation Proclamation, which had been withheld awaiting a victory. Two weeks later Lincoln came to survey the Maryland battlefield, to see the troops, and to confront George McClellan, commander of the Army of the Potomac, who had failed to pursue Lee's army. Soon after the engagement, Alexander Gardner and other photographers working for Mathew Brady came to the battlefield, capturing the carnage in dozens of photographs and then documenting Abraham Lincoln's tour of the battlefield on October 3. In an unprecedented exhibition, Mathew Brady displayed Gardner's Antietam photographs in New York. "Mr. Brady has done something to bring home to us the terrible reality and earnestness of war. If he has not brought bodies and laid them in our dooryards and along the streets, he has done something very like it. At the door of his gallery hangs a little placard, 'The Dead of Antietam ...'" (New York Times, October 20, 1862). Not long after Brady's Antietam exhibition, Gardner struck ou … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Kneass, Nicholas W.]
Various places, 1862. Approximately [60]pp. Quarto and octavo sheets, most letters one or two pages in length. Old folds, some minor soiling. Light wear to a few items, but generally very good. Collection of letters written to Capt. Nichols W. Kneass (1840-96) of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry during his time engaged as a soldier in that unit, though one or two of the letters are written by Kneass to folks back home. The 89th Pennsylvania Volunteers, of which the 8th Cavalry was a part, was organized at Philadelphia in the Fall of 1861. The regiment saw action at Manassas, Chickahominy, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Spottsylvania Court House, and were present at Appomattox when Lee surrendered. Kneass served throughout the length of the war, mustering out with the rank of Captain. A medical student when the war broke out, Kneass returned to his studies and later became a doctor. Most of the letters in this group are from the first few months Kneass was away at war. One of the letters written by Kneass to his mother, dated at Camp Leslie on March 22nd, reads in part: "Tonight at officers call we were ordered to prepare three days rations. Tomorrow we start for Alexandria where we will take the fleet, and further destination is unknown but we will probably move south and reinforce Burnsides....I have several trophies of our late march to Manassas. I have a number of documents taken from Fairfax Court House and will endeavor to send them at the earliest opportunity." [Civil War]: [U.S. Navy]
[N.p., probably printed on a shipboard press, 1862. 4pp. plus [3]pp. manuscript addenda. Quarto, on a folded folio sheet. Old fold lines. Minor soiling. Very good. Tied in upper left corner with a ribbon. A list of suspected blockade runners in operation along the Atlantic coast, printed just as the union was tightening its blockade noose around the Confederacy. The printed portion lists more than sixty ships, most of them British vessels which had been observed with suspicious cargoes in London or the West Indies. A typical entry reads: "Steamers Malacca & Rangoon, by advices from London of October 18, supposed to be purchased or hired by the rebels." The reports are dated from October 1861 to January 1862. The manuscript additions are in the same vein, listing ten additional ships, each with detailed physical descriptions but no associated dates. The manuscript is docketed on the verso: "Explination [sic] of vessels reported to run the Blockade." We have not seen any lists similar to this one, which must have been extremely useful to blockade operations and reveals a sophisticated Union intelligence operation that spanned several ports. From its physical appearance we speculate that this was printed on a shipboard press. Rare and ephemeral.

FRITH, FRANCIS
London, Glasgow, and Edinburgh: William MacKenzie, 1862. A handsome set of Frith’s photographs. This edition’s gold-toned photographs are preferred over the earlier editions for their “stronger quality” (Gernsheim). These “lavishly produced volumes of image and text, offered by subscription, were intended for a cultured, well-educated audience” (Hannavy). In 1856-58, Francis Frith made two expeditions, first to Egypt and then to Palestine, to photograph the great sites of antiquity, preserving the views for future generations and making them accessible to people around the world. Working with volatile chemicals and cumbersome apparatus in inhospitable conditions, Frith developed most of his plates in tombs, temples, and caves. For Frith, photography was destined to rank with other pictorial arts and even to surpass them, because at its heart was “its essential truthfulness of outline, and to a considerable extent, of perspective and light, and shade.” Frith’s books “proved immensely popular, [their] combination of remarkable photographic views with Frith’s first-hand written account providing a surrogate tour of the Near East for Victorian tourists and would-be tourists alike” (Hannavy). These albums contain some of Frith’s finest photographs, including the series of panoramic views of Jerusalem, the Sphinx and Great Pyramid of Giza, Colossal Figure at Abou Simbel, Karnak, the Pool of Hezekiah, the Thebes Entrance to the Great Temple Luxor, the Osiridae Pillars and Great Fallen Colossus, and many others. They encompass spectacular views of Jerusalem (among the earliest imag … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hugo, Victor
New York: Carleton, Publisher, 1862. First American edition. An attractive set of Hugo's masterpiece. All volumes Very Good + to Near Fine in original green cloth. Spines with slight fraying and loss (worst on Cosette with a small repaired chip), otherwise untouched. Internal contents generally in excellent condition with cracking to the rear hinge of the first two books (still holding well). Some volumes with early owner's written name or bookplate. Translated by Charles Wilbour immediately upon the release of the French edition, the first book was released in June of 1862 with monthly parts coming out through October. The first British edition, by contrast was released in three volumes all in October of 1862 (translated by Lascelles Wraxall). Widely regarded as one of the greatest novels of the 19th century, although contemporary reviews were mixed. Hugo's massive work follows the struggles of ex-convict, Jean Valjean, as he seeks spiritual redemption, despite the past ever following upon his heels. It is a social commentary not just on modern France, but upon all communities where there is crime, hunger, poverty and injustice. Moreover, Hugo inserts his own commentaries throughout the work, whether they relate to the current action or not. Successfully adapted to the screen and the stage, most recently by Tom Hooper in 2012 for Universal Pictures. A work that speaks across time and place and continues to touch and inspire its readers. Very Good +. Very Good +.

SARGENT, FitzWilliam (1820-1889)
Philadelphia: Blanchard and Lea, 1862. New edition. Binding slightly rubbed; occasional pale spotting/From the Collection of Allan B. Kirsner, M.D. 8vo. 383 pp. Wood-engraved illustrations in text. Original sheep, black morocco lettering-piece. Provenance: T. J. Adams (early inkstamp and inscriptions on flyleaves). A fine copy of this Civil War-era surgical manual by the father of painter John Singer Sargent, revised from the 1848 first edition by the addition of a chapter on military surgery by W. F. Atlee. Also with a fine Civil War provenance, inscribed at Camp Shanks in Indianapolis, 27 February 1864, where the 119th Infantry (or 7th Cavalry) rendezvoused under John P. C. Shanks. A severe battle between the 119th and the enemy had taken place in Okalona, Mississippi just 5 days before Adams's inscription. The Preface states: "The merits of this work as a handy and convenient manual for reference in the field and hospital, have induced the publishers to add to it a chapter (the Ninth) on Gunshot Wounds, and such other subjects peculiar to Military Surgery as seemed requisite to adapt it more thoroughly to the wants of Army Surgeons. Owing to the absence of the Author in Europe, this has been prepared by Dr. W. F. Atlee. Philadelphia, March, 1862." See Rutkow, The History of Surgery in the United States, GS25 (first edition). EGREMONT MASSACHUSETTS MA: (1862). 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. On offer is an original, superb relic of the Civil War and an incredibly detailed, historical document with a riveting narrative being the journal of William. B. Stark beginning with his enlistment July 21st 1862 until April 13th 1865 when he relates the details of Appomattox and Lee's surrender and the jubilation of the troops. Thusly his entire tour in the Civil War. Stark was from Egremont, Massachusetts near the New York state border in western Massachusetts. Mr. Stark served in the 34th Regiment Infantry Massachusetts Volunteers. This is one of the most detailed writings of one man's service we have ever read. Stark took copious notes and left no details unmentioned from a detailed listing of every battle and engagement, his fellow soldiers, officers, kit and clothing, foods eaten etc., etc. He never fails to mention names and Mr. Stark to history's benefit writes profusely. There is tremendous battle content with detailed explanations of terrain, weather and conditions. He describes the mood of the men, the affect of the conditions and writes very well too. One online source relates the following of this famed company of volunteers: 34th Regiment Infantry Organized at Worcester August 1, 1862. Moved to Washington, D.C., August 15-17.
