1862. In this part-printed document signed, Robert H. Pruyn is appointed "Minister Resident" to Japan. Abraham Lincoln, as President, has signed boldly at the lower right, as well as, William H. Seward as Secretary of State. Several years after Commodore Perry signed the U.S.-Japan Treaty of Peace (1854) the first American diplomat to Japan, Townsend Harris, presented his credentials to the Shogun (1858). After he departed in 1862, Robert H. Pruyn assumed the Resident Minister duties which he held during the rest of Lincoln's administration and the Civil War. Sheet of paper measures: 12" x 17 3/4". Document is marked "duplicate" in manuscript at the upper left. We are not sure of the protocol related to this. Was one lost? Was one created to travel to Japan and another to be retained at home? Condition: Fold lines, overall toned (especially around perimeter); exceptionally strong signature. ** Please contact us for a shipping quote. Lockwood & Co, London. First Edition. Published by Lockwood & Co, Stationers' Hall Court, London, 1862. 12mo Hardback. Pictorial decorative boards. Measures a little over 6.5" x 4.25" (16.75cm x 10.75cm). (iv) + 154pp, plus 16pp publisher's catalogue to rear. A quirky very early guide to the experience of railway travel, with tips on preparation, conduct and deportment; what to expect every step of the way, including how to deal with staring fellow travellers who might intimidate the easily abashed or the 'softer sex'; and essentials such as the 'Disposal of Ladies and Children.' An untentionally whimsical field guide for the unseasoned Victorian traveller by rail, of which we can find no other original copies on the market; with just one known copy housed in the Illinois University Library, USA. Condition: Spine's paper covering absent, with the rear board hinge showing gauze and narrow fracture at fore edge of upper board, though nothing too offensive. Both boards remain soundly in situ, whilst showing rubbing, edge-scuffing and discolouration commensurate with age. Text-block sound, with no loose or absent leaves. Contents complete. Foxing, tanning and marking to prelims and occasionally thereon. Leaves tanned, mainly marginal. The last couple of leaves and the rear endpaper have creased corners. Remains a very interesting original survivor, despite the aforementioned faults. Please see photos for further detail. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Concord, New Hampshire, 1862. Envelope or Cover. Very good. The large advertising flyer measures 22" x 15". It was folded four times into a 6" x 3" rectangle and sent through the mail to a New Hampshire physician. It bears a three-cent Washington stamp (Scott #65) and a circular Concord, N.H postmark dated March 22, 1862. In nice shape with just a little edge-wear. A printed caution at the top reads: "This Price List I consider Confidential in all cases, and for the exclusive use to the party to whom I send it. Present prices subject to subsequent variations. To which I would invite the attention of Druggists, Physicians and Merchants, before purchasing elsewhere." This list contains at least 1,750 items broken into categories including drugs and botanicals, patent medicines, surgeon's instruments, flint and green glassware, medicinal extracts and pills, dyes and dye stuffs, bronzes, perfumes and a selection of teas, coffees, and tobaccos. The photos are all 3.25" square and uniformly mounted on slightly convex 5" square cards with an embossed border and the name, "ALOE'S", centered. John Utlley to his father
Oroville, California, 1862. Unbound. Very good. One letter is dated October 16, 1858; the other, June 28, 1862. No mailing envelopes. The first letter has a few small holes at the intersection of some mailing folds. Notice one old near invisible repair to a short split along a mailing fold apparently was made with archival tape.Utley's California address has been excised from bottom of the second letter's second leaf.In Utley's first letter, he describes his journey to California. Most important is his nonchalant description of a hitherto unreported attack on a wagon train by the Mormon Militia and their allies, the Paiute Indians, that occurred shortly after their infamous unprovoked slaughter of 120 men, women, and children in the Baker-Fancher wagon train, most likely by the same Mormon-Paiute force:"I will tell you i had a long JourneyWee was about five months on the road Wee stoped at pikes peak about three weeks Wee had no trouble crossing the plains but there was some men kiled on the roadThere were five men shot dead by the indians and the mormans in one place and one women Cripledwee had a long Journey"Although Utley is at first excited and optimistic about life in California, by 1862 he had become disenchanted with California's cost of living and weather:"I got her about the first of september i am now in sacramento vallyi am working by the monthi am a getting fifty dollars per month and my dwell and washingi like the Cuntry firstrate. . .. John Utlley to his father
Oroville, California, 1862. Unbound. Very good. One letter is dated October 16, 1858; the other, June 28, 1862. No mailing envelopes. The first letter has a few small holes at the intersection of some mailing folds. Notice one old near invisible repair to a short split along a mailing fold apparently was made with archival tape. Utley's California address has been excised from bottom of the second letter's second leaf. In Utley's first letter, he describes his journey to California. Most important is his nonchalant description of a hitherto unreported attack on a wagon train by the Mormon Militia and their allies, the Paiute Indians, that occurred shortly after their infamous unprovoked slaughter of 120 men, women, and children in the Baker-Fancher wagon train, most likely by the same Mormon-Paiute force: "I will tell you i had a long Journey Wee was about five months on the road Wee stoped at pikes peak about three weeks Wee had no trouble crossing the plains but there was some men kiled on the road There were five men shot dead by the indians and the mormans in one place and one women Cripled wee had a long Journey" Although Utley is at first excited and optimistic about life in California, by 1862 he had become disenchanted with California's cost of living and weather: "I got her about the first of september i am now in sacramento vally i am working by the month i am a getting fifty dollars per month and my dwell and washing i like the Cuntry firstrate. . .. I am a going to mining Just as soon as the rany season Comences I … [Click Below for Full Description]

PIATT, Arabella
[Cincinnati, Ohio], 1862. Hardcover. Very Good. Small octavo blank book. Measuring 8" x 6.5". 196pp. Black three-quarter leather, marbled paper boards, gilt decorations, and "Miss A. Piatt" stamped on the front cover. Boards are modestly worn with rubbing and tears else very good, internally near fine with light foxing and clear handwritten text. A poetry book and remembrance album kept between 1843 and 1862 by and for Miss Arabella Piatt filled with poems written by several different authors as well as her own original poetry. The album opens with a poem about what Piatt wants her journal to be: "The object of an album is originally a good one...this is a depository of beauty and adulation; but on the contrary if I should ever have the pleasure of seeing it when completed, I expect to find it containing those moral and refined sentiments, practical and religious truths to explain that the mind, empowers the heart." The poems are written mostly by Piatt and focus on the young girl's devotion to God and her religious values and morals: "Amus'd at ease the godlike man they found, Pleas'd with the solemn harps harmonious sound, with these he soothes his angry soul and sings, Th' immortal deeds of heroes and of kings." The poems written by other authors focus on the same things, religion, but also about romance and boys: "That none may know part, of the quell in my heart, I know I will last long." There are a few diary entries where Piatt briefly writes about her faith before going into another poem, one of which is 13 pages long and expresses the love Piatt receives and g … [Click Below for Full Description]

TABOR, AUGUSTA and HORACE
Laurette (Buckskin Joe), Colorado Territory, 1862 - 1864. AUGUSTA and HORACE A. W. TABORHandwritten album dedicated toLillian Pierce (sister of Augusta Tabor)1862 - 1864Laurette (Buckskin Joe),Park County,COLORADO TERRITORYTabor, Augusta and Horace. LOVE'S OFFERING. Original 1860s artifact inscribed by Augusta and Horace Tabor (Colorado's most renowned silver baron). Artifact first written in and present to Augusta's sister, Lillian Pierce, on April 22, 1862 at Laurette (later known as Buckskin Joe), Colorado Territory.Album published by Moss & Brother, Philadelphia, circa 1860. This is a standardized hardbound album with blank pages for writing and decorative interleaved steel-engravings of emotional-pleasing scenes. The blank pages were meant for handwritten sentiments and that is exactly what this album contains, generally all from the early 1860s. The significance of this album is that it was presented to Lillie (Lil, Lillian, etc.) Pierce, sister of Augusta Tabor, who, at the time, was living in Laurette (Buckskin Joe), Park County, Colorado Territory with then husband Horace A. W. Tabor. Augusta, from Maine, and Horace, from Vermont, lived on a farm near Zeandale, Kansas in the late 1850s. Reports of mineral discoveries in the territorial gold regions inspired the Tabors to leave their farm and move on to Denver City, and then Laurette, near Alma, in South Park. Although they weren't aware, they became part of the 59'ers Rush to the Rockies. Tabor left his family in Golden and ventured to Payne's Bar, the area later known as Idaho Springs. New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, (1862). First edition, third state. 10 engraved illustrations to text. 243, [1], [8 (ads)] pp. 8vo. The First Drinks Manual. First edition of the first drinks manual, the third state with the price $2.50 on the front cover and the second title, changed from "The Bartenders' Guide" to "How to Mix Drinks, or the Bon-Vivant's Companion." A legendary book in the annals of cocktail history -- though drinks recipes had appeared in print previously, this was the first book dedicated to the American art of the single-serving mixed drink (what we would call a cocktail today, though in the 19th century the cocktail was a specific type of mixed drink). It is a work that appeals to both amateurs and professionals, and its rediscovery by Dale de Groff and other proponents of modern mixology was instrumental in fostering our current cocktail renaissance. Thomas (1830-1885), "the father of American mixology," led a peripatetic life, tending bar from New York to California and places in between, while also trying his hand at gold prospecting, gambling and sailing. He owned several bars in New York over the course of his career, including a popular spot below P.T. Barnum's American Museum. His flair and showmanship (a signature drink, The Blue Blazer, involved passing a flaming arc of whiskey back and forth from one mixing cup to another) made Thomas a celebrity in his time. His book went through various editions throughout the 19th and early 20th century -- Herbert Asbury published a useful update in the middle of Prohibition -- and remains in print today. Supreme Court of Texas, 1862
Webb & Jarum, Attorneys for the Defendant, 1862. Two separate manuscript drafts on leaves of lined legal paper held together by a strip of paste near the top edge; verso of last leaf of both copies docketed with short title and the case number (?) 1826. First draft, 3 pages of text; second, 4 pages of text, plus a blank page. 12-1/16" x 7-15/16". Three fold lines; light creasing to first draft; occasional inks mudges, not affecting readability. Very good. Civil War-era Fratricide, Texas Style. ¶ Two holograph briefs, both dated Feb. 7th, 1862, appealing Henry Wade's conviction for the murder of his brother, William. The shorter brief appears to be an earlier draft; the longer one, more cohesively argued, a later version. The briefs detail the circumstances of William's death, as well as perceived faults of the original trial, and argue that Wade's sentence should be reduced to manslaughter. According to both briefs, the basic facts of the case are as follows: late one night, Henry left the brothers' house in a drunken state, and William attempted to bring him back inside. Words were exchanged, the brothers fought, and Henry retrieved a pistol from his room; when William tried to attack Henry with a chair, Henry shot and killed him. ¶ The drafts employ the same basic arguments to shift the responsibility for the fight to William and to the judge during the trial, but differ in structure, detail, emphasis of points of contention (the judge being the primary complaint in the presumed earlier draft), formality of address, and reliance on the testimony of the key witness, Henry … [Click Below for Full Description]

Southhampton County, Virginia
Southhampton County, Virginia, 1862. Quarto. 10 pages with 3 pages of voter's names and officials. A detailed record of a local election 11 months after the beginning of the Civil War. It would seem that this is the election held on March 13, 1862 on the new constitution which was to remove references to the United States. Since so many men over the age of 21 were at war, only 13 showed up to vote on this list. It was only in 1864 that they had a new Virginia constitution that deleted the term "United States". Page 10 signed by the following Commissioners: Robert Ricks, R.H. Blythe; James W. Parker, Atop page 2, L.R.
