William Gilham
Richmond, VA.: West & Johnston, 1862. xxiv,[25]-559pp. plus 82 plates and [5] fold-out plates. Original brown cloth, stamped in blind. Spine cover is lacking and book has separated into three sections. A worthy candidate for repair, but should be done to the taste of the next owner. Light toning, scattered foxing. The second, supplemented, edition of this Confederate published guide to soldiering and the art of war, with 82 plates not in the first edition of the previous year. Gilham served in the Confederate Army and was a teacher at the Virginia Military Institute. His manual covers topics such as instructions for skirmishes, target practice, marching, and army organization. This edition features an addendum with eighty-seven plates illustrating items such as proper shooting positions, order in battery, and sketches of artillery. Gilham's manual continued to be used into the 21st century and is considered an invaluable piece of Confederate military history. CRANDALL 2419. HARWELL, CONFEDERATE HUNDRED 36. JENYNS, Rev. Leonard.
JENYNS, Rev. Leonard. Memoir of the Rev. John Stevens Henslow M.A., F.L.S., F.G.S., F.C.P.S., late Rector of Hitcham and Professor of Botany in the University of Cambridge. John Van Voorst. 1862. 8vo. Original green cloth, gilt lettering to spine; pp. ix + 278, frontispiece photograph of Henslow's bust tipped in, double page table, errata slip; edges of boards and spine dulled, browning to edges of text block, very good.First and only edition, in a variant binding unnoted by Freeman. Henslow was an important figure in Darwin's life. He was Darwin's mentor at Cambridge and was entrusted with the material from the Beagle when it reached England. Darwin's Letters on geology were written from the Beagle to Henslow. In fact, Darwin's place on the voyage was due to the fact that both Henslow and Jenyns turned down the opportunity. Henslow recommended to Fitzroy that his young naturalist friend should take the position instead. Darwin's deep connection with the man is the reason why Jenyns invited him to write a personal recollection of Henslow, which appears here on pages 51-55 and which was not reprinted in full until Nora Barlow's Darwin and Henslow in 1967.This is a very scarce work, with only a couple of copies appearing at auction. It never went to a second edition, and the fact that it sold sporadically is suggested by the existence of several variant bindings. Yet this is a wonderful example of Darwin writing in a personal vein and giving thanks for a man to whom owed so much. Something here is revealed of Darwin's own moral code: "Reflecting over his character with grati … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ogden Hoffman
Numa Hubert, San Francisco, 1862. VERY SCARCE! This book is one of the Zamorano Eighty, an important work on California history. Published 1862 in San Francisco by Numa Hubert, Publisher. Hardcover, with 458 pages, plus 146 pages of appendix and index. This volume includes reports on land cases with decisions by Judge Ogden Hoffman. These cases covered legal issues regarding the most important Spanish and Mexican land grants, and this, in turn, helped provide guidelnes for land ownership in the years immediately following the Gold Rush in California, According to the Zamorano Eighty, "Much early history and information concerning the ranchos is included in them. An important appendix lists 813 land claims filed with the Land Commission, both in northern and southern districts of California, based on the early grants. It is said to be the only printed list of these claims." (Zamorano Eighty #44). Streeter said this is "a very rare book, as well as quite an important one." Also referenced in Howes H569 and Graff 1919. This is NOT the original cover. This is an older rebind of beige cloth, with the original labels reattached to the spine. Title label is largely intact with some cracking and scraping, the volume label has missing pieces. Spine is darkened. Binding is solid. PLEASE NOTE THE CONDITION: The title page and the preface page are both DETACHED but PRESENT. Both are cracked along the gutter. Back side of title page has tape all along the top edge. Houston: Printed at the Telegraph Book and Job Establishment, 1862. Good plus.. 11pp. Original printed wrappers. Light wear. Somewhat foxed. A very scarce Confederate imprint recording the assembly of the Texas Knights Templar in June 1862. The Grand Commander was absent, as were many, "Having drawn his sword in defence of his country, and being called away from the state in pursuit of that service." The pamphlet lists the few participants in the Encampment, and pridefully notes that, "It is patriotism that has drawn away our forces." Resolutions supporting the solidarity of Texas and the Knights Templar with the Confederacy are printed. A rare Texas Confederate imprint, not appearing in any auction records.
