Unknown if Stevens or friend of Stevens regardless a storied regiment who served at major battles including Antietam and Gettysburg. Probably wearing a GAR ribbon. Could only find Stevens in Co. C on NPS database. Northeast origin. Thanks for looking. History of the Fourteenth Regiment C.V. Infantry. Written By Rev. Henry S. Stevens, Late Chaplain of The Fourteenth Connecticut Volunteers. ƒ??The organization of the Fourteenth Regiment began under the order promulgated May 22, 1862, to furnish Connecticutƒ??s contingent of the fifty thousand men called for by the War Department at Washington to go into ƒ??Camp of Instructionƒ? at Annapolis, Md. Recruiting for the regiment began at once, but progressed slowly until, in July, after the Union reverses on the Peninsula, the President called for three hundred thousand volunteers for three years or the war, when it received a tremendous impulse and the regiment filled up rapidly, being the first one to complete its organization under that call. It was recruited from the State at large, having its rendezvous, named ƒ??Camp Foote,ƒ? at Hartford. August 23, 1862, the regiment was mustered into the United States service, and on the 25th, one thousand and fifteen strong, under command of Dwight Morris, left the State, reaching Washington and crossing the Potomac to Arlington, Va., on the 28th. The next morning it went by forced march to Fort Ethan Alle … [Click Below for Full Description]

1862. A rare Western appointment document of Thomas Frazar, Assessor of Internal Revenue for the Collection District of the State of Oregon, signed by Abraham Lincoln and Salmon P. Chase in its Victorian frame measuring approximately 14 x 17 visible inches and 17 ?« x 20 3/8 inches as a complete framed piece and a half plate daguerreotype of Frazar measuring approximately 6 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches as a complete piece and 4 3/4 x 3 1/2 visible inches. Frazar was the first and only appointment in this position from July 29, 1862 through June 24, 1873. Frazar adds his own personal note on top of the document lower left as pictured and it appears Frazar probably had this framed later in his life. Frazar was an Oregon Pioneer originally from Duxbury, MA who did some gold prospecting and retailing in Jacksonville, OR. Both his father and his wifeƒ??s were ship captains and they had great heartache with the loss of 4 of 5 of their children. Passing through Panama and around Cape Horn on multiple occasions, Frazar ended up in Portland, OR. Frazarƒ??s only surviving child, Rosetta, married Martin Strong Burrell. One of their 4 children, Margaret Alden Burrell, married Capt. William S. Biddle, an officer of the United States army. This document descended in the Biddle family and last originated in the Washington, DC area. Lincolnƒ??s signature is bold and strong with foxing, staining, and creasing with unstable paper backing as pictured. Daguerreotype has scratches, oxidation, loss most notably on forehead and jacket and convex indention upper center as pictured with black tape encasing e … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEEMANN, Berthold
Cambridge Macmillan & Co, 1862. First edition. 8vo. Original green bead cloth, concentric blind rules to covers, gilt titles and blind decoration to spine. A near fine copy, the cloth clean and bright with a touch of wear to the spine ends. Internally very fresh, hinges tender with a little adhesive to the front pastedown from a sometime excised bookplate. Small ownership inscription to half title. Tinted lithographic frontispiece, three further tinted lithographs, four engraved illustrations in the text and a folding map of the Fijian islands. In 1859 Seemann, a noted botanist, was commissioned to accompany an exploratory British government mission to Fiji, convened to investigate a potential cession of the islands. "His instructions as a botanist were 'to prepare a report on the native and cultivated vegetable products of the Fijian islands, and the apparent capabilities of the islands. to produce cotton, sugar, spices, indigo and other tropical plants'. In addition he was to 'make as complete a collection as possible of all the plants of the islands and all vegetable products'" (Howgego). Though the emphasis was on Fiji's plant life (published at length in his monumental Flora Vitiensis (1865-73) which is advertised for subscription at the end of the present volume), Seemann records in detail aspects of a local commerce, manufacture and culture only beginning to open up to outsiders. Guthrie, G.J. (George James)
Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1862. Octavo. Sixth edition. 614 pages, illustrations. This book was quickly printed from the London 1855 edition for use of surgeons in the Civil War. It began with a general treatment on gunshot wounds which very few physicians had dealt with prior to the war. Later in the year in a very small print run Thomas Longmore's Treatise on Gunshot Wounds would appear but this work was the primary one in makeshift field hospitals while Longmore which once printed was often destroyed as blood, filth, etc. were encrusted as physicans worked sometimes day and into the night hours. While this work began with what had been observed in the Crimean War, Longmore would distinguish wounds from the variations between the Enfield and Whitworth rifles. As in the case of most medical volumes published in the Civil War, they truly became working volumes, this volume has relative light wear. Bound in green embossed cloth, spine lettering gilt (fading), corners worn through, some chipping to spine ends, with a few nicks to spine, previous owner's name. A very good copy.

DARWIN, Charles.
London: John Murray, 1862. Octavo in twelves. Original purple fine diaper grain cloth vertically ruled in blind, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, blind ornamental panels to covers, gilt orchid motif to front cover, terracotta coated endpapers. A few light marginal pencillings. Spine a little sunned with very minor wear at ends, cloth a little mottled, a couple of stains from pressed flowers. A very good copy, with the publisher's 32-page catalogue at the end (dated December 1861). Folding wood-engraved plate of the Orchis mascula, 33 wood-engravings in the text. First edition, first issue, with advertisements dated December 1861. Darwin's first book after the Origin of Species, and the first volume of supporting evidence, it attributes the symbiosis between orchids and insects to natural selection. Darwin wrote to his publisher that "I think this little volume will do good to the 'Origin', as it shows that I have worked hard at details" (cited in Freeman), but, although praised by botanists, it was not a great success with the public, who were more interested in the controversy of evolution than the details. Freeman estimates the number of copies printed to be no more than 2,000, and probably less. It is the only Darwin title issued by Murray between 1859 and 1910 not to be bound in the characteristic green cloth. Provenance: imposing armorial bookplate (carrying facsimile signature) of Edward Atkinson and inscribed across the front endpapers "Edward Atkinson dono dedit John Hey, April 7th 1863". Atkinson (1830-1905), served in the civil service at Scutari, alongside F … [Click Below for Full Description]

Victor Hugo
Keine Angabe. 1862.. Large folding handcoloured copper engraved Japanese map of the world, 91 × 130cm. 30.5 × 22cm when folded. Features 242 handcoloured maps in columns at the right of the map, some staining and browning particularly at folds. Original cloth covered boards damp damaged. Presented in original card folder with title label and toggle ties. Folder worn and damp stained. First Japanese edition of this map:『輿地航海図』安政5 (1858) 刊の異版. This is a revised edition with a new title. All text in Japanese with the exception of a large panel at the lower right corner which reads "A Map of the World in Japanese by Ed. Schnell. Yokohama. February 1862." Although the advertisement laid down inside the upper cover of the folder suggests this map was based on Englishman, John Purdy's 'Chart of the World on Mercator's Projection' there is some doubt as to whether this was the only model for it as it has bears striking similarities with Sato Masayasu's 'Shinkan yochi zenzu', (1861-2). Sato Masaysu's map is believed to have been based on an unknown Dutch map. However this map without doubt shows the growing scientific leanings of Japanese maps. Edo was over and the new period of Western influence was in full swing. Australia, though accurate in outline, is rather strangely divided into four rather unusual sections, including a straight diagonal line across the bottom section of Western Ausralia. The northern secton of the Northern Territory from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Quion Island is also indicated as section. Queensland and most of the Northern Territory and Western Australia are on large … [Click Below for Full Description]
