This work is invariably browned and foxed and often damaged as it was widely read at the time and this particular copy is rather better than most. Could do with a sympathetic rebind but would make a very good copy once done. Published anonymously, authorship was often considered to be Oliver Goldsmith. However, scholars now agree the revised the text for the second edition and the true author is Sarah Scott. With an illustrated frontispiece. Bound with one leaf of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Sarah Scott was an English novelist, translator, social reformer and member of the Bluestockings. A Description of Millenium Hall is her most famous work. The novel is set in a utopian community of women devoted to artistic pursuits and education, Christian virtues and philanthropy. It provided a fictional example of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

LEWIS & GOODWIN (pub)
Albany: Lewis & Goodwin, 1862. Tinted lithograph. Sheet size: 21 1/2 x 38 1/2 inches. Very rare, large panoramic view of Cohoes, New York and points beyond George W. Lewis and Thomas Goodwin, Albany printers, appear to have teamed up for a year or two in the early 1860's. Several other town views, also in New York State, are dated 1862. This unusually large view was probably drawn by George W. Lewis. Reps cites a copy with only Lewis's name on it. Most town views of the period are about half the size of this one. Viewmakers usually solicited business owners and prominent citizens of a town prior to beginning the project, and it is very likely that the mill owners whose companies are all listed in the bottom margin contributed largely and required the larger format. At the time this view was published, Cohoes was one of the most prosperous towns in America. Known as "Spindle City", it was the center of textile manufacturing in the country. Cotton shipped up from Mobile (and other Southern ports) to New York and up the Hudson was turned into fabric at the many mills seen here lining the Erie Canal. In fact, Harmony Mills (represented in two buildings here) was just then under contract to produce uniforms for the Union Army. Cohoes is at the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers. It enjoys immense water power from the Mohawk and access to the world via the Hudson. This is nicely demonstrated in this view which focuses on the rivers and canals that interlace the region, with the Erie Canal, lined with barges, in the foreground. This portion of the Cana … [Click Below for Full Description]

J. G. Lockhart
ont> Adam and Charles Black: Edinburgh, 1862. Book. A complete smartly bound ten volume set of J. Lockhart's informative and thorough biography of his father-in-law, Sir Walter Scott. Complete in ten volumes. This work is a thorough biography looking at the life of the great Sir Walter Scott. Sir Walter Scott is best known today for his novels and poetry, including 'Ivanhoe' and 'The Lady of the Lake'. He wrote a lot about his birthplace of Scotland, though with his experiments in historical fiction, he expanded to writing about various places in England and Europe. Scott was also involved in re-discovering the Scottish crown jewels, after having been missing for over a hundred years. The regalia were rediscovered in 1818, when George IV, whilst he was still Regent, issued a warrant authorising Walter Scott to break down a wall in the Crown Room to try and find the regalia. They were discovered, and have been on display ever since. Written by J. G. Lockhart. Lockhart was the son-in-law of Scott, having married his eldest daughter. He is best known for this biography, which has been highly praised as the second best biography written in the English language, second of to James Boswell's 'Life of Johnson'. Volume I with a frontispiece, and Volumes II to X with a frontispiece and illustrated title page Folding plate to Volume VI, showing a facsimile of a page of the original manuscript of 'Ivanhoe'. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Light rubbing to the paper to the boards and to the extremities. Confederate Song]
[np, 1862. Broadside printed on bright yellow paper, 3-5/8" x 8-5/8". Light toning, Very Good. This scarce song was printed in several locales, with slight variations. All appear to begin, as here, with "You Rebels come along and listen to my song." The song mocks the efforts of Abraham Lincoln and his army to crush the rebellion. "Old Uncle Abe, he ordered a blockade,/ He thought that his vessels would sustain him,/ But the old Merrimac, she gave them such a crack,/ That she sent them to the Happy Land of Canaan." The song contains ten four-line stanzas, each followed by the Chorus. Probably an 1862 publication date, after the Monitor-Merrimac fight, and after the Battle of the Peninsula in July, about which the author also gloats. Wolf, Confederate Song Sheets C144 [this item]. Rudolph 240 [variant: title includes the phrase, "Written by Master Joseph Borrowich, of Baltimore, Md."]. Parrish & Willingham 6540 [variant, entitled, "Song. Tune. Happy Land of Canaan."]. OCLC 8223973 [5], 84144974 [1] [variations not determined].

E. & H. T. Anthony, New York. (Wild West) RARE CDV OF KIT CARSON AND EDWIN PERRIN. New York: E. & H. T. Anthony, [1862]. 4" x 2-3/8". EXCEEDINGLY RARE carte-de-visite, or CDV, of Kit Carson, at left in his Army frock coat and Edwin Perrin, seated with cane; taken in Albuquerque, New Mexico in January 1862. At the time of this photo, Carson was a colonel in the Union Army and the leader of the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Infantry. Perrin was a government expediter, sent to New Mexico in 1861 by the United States Secretary of War, Simon Cameron, on a secret mission to help arm New Mexico Civil War troops as the Union prepared for battle in the Southwestern Theater. Perrin worked closely with Carson in these efforts and remained with Carson's command in New Mexico through 1862. Kit Carson became a legend in his own lifetime thanks mainly to newspaper accounts and Government reports of his work as a guide for John C. Fremont's three western expeditions. Sand, George, Schriftstellerin (1804-1876)
Nohant, November, 1862. 2? SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. Numerierung "183". - MEGA III/2, 466.

COUSIN CHAS
BALTIMORE MARYLAND MD: (1862). 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. On offer is a super, original 1862 Civil War manuscript letter handwritten by 'Cousin Chas' a Baltimore resident writing his cousins. Amidst the cordial family news and general catching up there is much to be noted regarding war news affecting Baltimore and Chas. Here are some snippets: "...The 'Rebels' are occasionally 'hooked up' - one of our fashionable ladies, her son's was arrested yesterday and sent to Washington - her husband is 'floating about' somewhere, afraid to show himself - he has one son in the 'Confederate Army' and another in 'Fort ???' ... a third, about sixteen ... is the only one of the family at liberty I believe. Pretty well for one family, and what a sad state of things - so much for 'rebellion'. The crime, the paper says is sending cloths to the 'Traitors' but we hear it was something else. You ask what we think of the 'War'. I have felt from the beginning that it would be short, but many differ from me and some good Union men say they work wish they could feel as sanguine about it as I do. .... I hope his sons may be returned to him in safety... We do like Sammy's present teachers very well. There are two of them, one a 'Secesher' the other 'Union' so they agree not to say anything about 'Politics' in school. The boys are nearly all 'Secesh' to that the 'Union ???' have to stand up for their rights - and they can crow now if they choose (because) your 'Regiments' all did well at Roanoke, but I wonder at the Govt. sending such green hands when there were so many who had been longer in the fie … [Click Below for Full Description]

Macedo, Joaquim Manoel De
B. L. Garnier, Rio de Janeiro. In-8º; 2 vols in 1. (1), 363pp, (2)ff; (1), 362pp, (1)ff. With 11 engraved lithographies contaning views of several churchs and convents. Bound in half green calf with marbles papeboards. Spine with gilt lettering and raised bands. Very good copy. The buildings of Rio de Janeiro would be the pretext in Joaquim Manoel Macedo to walk the city and invite the readers of the newspaper "The Commércio" to discover it through chronicles. They were collected and published in a book format under the title "A Walk Through the City of Rio de Janeiro," between 1862 and 1863. He was amusing in his reading, compared to books and articles, including that of his contemporary Moreira de Azevedo, The author's interest is soon clarified in the first pages of the book when he states that: (.) it was not from the central and distant provinces that I intend to speak. Of these, we are informed that they are phosphorizing their elections periodically, and that is enough. What's more, they represent a world that is still waiting for their Columbus; and no wonder it is ignored, of course we do not even know the city of S. Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. It should be noted that this incursion would be excruciating to the mountaineer of Minas, to the Southern Guasca, to the Caipira of Parana; but what is even more surprising is that the people of Rio de Janeiro themselves are not in the face of the history and chronicles of the capital, of which they boast so much "(Macedo, 1862: 20). For Joaquim Manoel Macedo, there was a city whose history and identity are invisibly expose … [Click Below for Full Description]
