        The Birds of Great Britain.

London, Taylor and Francis by the Author, [1862] - 1873. 5 volumes. Folio (555 x 380mm). With 367 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates, many heightened with gum-arabic, after John Gould, Joseph Wolf, H.C. Richter and W. Hart. Contemporary green full morocco, richly gilt decorated spines in 6 compartments, sides with gilt borders, gilt edges. First edition. A fine and beautifully bound copy of the most splendid work on the birds of Great Britain."The most popular of all Gould's works is always likely to be the 'Birds of Great Britain'" (Fine Bird Books p. 29). The work had almost 500 subscribers and 'Gould was especially proud of this work on the birds of his native land. As a 'novelty' he included quite a few drawings with the figures of young birds. As would be expected, there were more subscribers for this set than any other...'(Sauer p. 74)./"However, Gould's 'Birds of Great Britain', ... did add a great deal to our knowledge of British birds, besides being a more complete set of pictures of our native birds than previously printed. Furthermore, for the first time we have a lot of chicks, eggs and nests depicted. This title is outstanding for the attention paid to the young of the species. Gould had reached high and low for specimens of the nestlings of rare species and their nests. Wherever possible, drawings were done from freshly killed specimens. The result is that this book has much more lively birds than in Gould's previous folios, and there is much more freedom in showing the birds in different attitudes. Gould did the sketches himself, Hart and Richter did the full-scale water-colours and then the two lithographers drew the patterns on the stone... The illustrations show Gould's work at his best and it demonstated the work of all his artists and lithographers except Lear and Mrs. Gould. Lord Lilford, when preparing a similar work, fifteen years later, wrote of Gould's book, 'For really beautiful and correct illustrations of British birds, you will find Gould's great work on that special subject in the library, but the books are so large that you will require a boy to help you carry them from the house' (Jackson pp. 51-52).//Fine Bird Book p. 78; Nissen IVB, 372; Sauer 23.

Darley's [James Fenimore] Cooper Vignettes. Artists Proofs. Folios 1-4 [32 engravings]

New York: W.A. Townsend and Company,1862. Folio. 11 x 15 inches. Parts 1-4 only (of 8). Each containing 8 steel-engraved plates in India paper, mounted on French plate paper, each with accompanying letterpress. (Folio) 38 x2 7.5 cm (15 x1 1") loose in original pictorial board portfolios, as issued. The prints are artists proofs before letters. The publisher's prospectus, printed inside the front boards explains: "It was known that the extensive bank-note system of our country had developed a style of engraving superior in brilliancy and effect to almost anything which the European burins afford, but which, from its peculiarly laborious and costly method, has been confined nearly exclusively to bank-note dies. In order, therefore, to secure these Vignettes a style of execution which should commend them to all patrons of art, it was determined to have them engraved, so far as practicable, by the leading artists of this much admired school. It was the first attempt, it is believed, to introduce the deep cutting and solid lining of a bank-note die into book work, and was only accomplished at a cost fully double that usually paid for book illustrations of a similar character . . . No work of the same magnitude and kind has hitherto been accomplished in this country...". The edition was limited to 500 impressions. Scarce. Library of Congress Control Number 17002065

Then, with an improved apparatus, he was able to measure precisely the velocity of light in air. This result, significantly smaller than Fizeau's of 1849, changed the accepted value of solar parallax and vindicated the higher value which Le Verrier had calculated from astronomical data. Foucault's turning-mirror apparatus was the basis for the later determinations of the velocity of light by A. A. Michelson and Simon Newcomb" (DSB). - Stellenweise etwas stockfleckig bzw. gebräunt.         Un souvenir de Solferino.

Geneva: Jules-Guillaume Fick, , 1862. Tall octavo (270 x 172 mm). Contemporary red half cloth, gilt lettered spine, marbled sides, with the original drab brown wrappers bound in. Double-page coloured plan of the battle. Spine sunned, general light peripheral toning to letterpress. An excellent copy. First edition, scarce: 1,600 copies were privately printed by Durant. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on a blank before the half-title: "Monsieur Albert Dunant de la part de l'auteur", apparently in a secretarial hand. An excellent familial association: Albert Dunant was a state councillor for the canton of Geneva; this copy also carries his attractive etched bookplate and official autograph stamp on the half-title. "Dunant, a Swiss philanthropist, must have been aware of Florence Nightingale's work in the Crimea, for it was what he read of the treatment of the sick and wounded in that war that drove him to the seat of the war in Italy between the French and the Austrians in 1859. He was present at the battle of Solferino, where the casualties were appalling, totalling nearly 40,000 on both sides. The treatment of the wounded was worse than callous: it was virtually non-existent. Dunant's account of the state of affairs, disarmingly entitled A Souvenir of Solferino, produced almost immediate results. An unofficial international conference met in Geneva in October 1863, and in the following year the Swiss Government called for an official conference at which the Geneva Convention was drawn up and signed on 22 August 1864. This provided for the humane treatment of the sick and the wounded, and the proper treatment of prisoners of war and the civilian population. After hesitation on the part of some governments, including the British, and as the result of subsequent conferences, the Convention as it now stands was signed in 1906 by the governments of every civilized country in the world. Dunant was the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901" (PMM).

Autograph letter signed "I. Moscheles" to the pianist and composer Louis Brassin

      - 2 pp. of a bifolium. With integral address panel. Dated Leipzig, January 18, 1862. In German (with translation). Moscheles thanks Brassin for sending two volumes of his concert etudes. "No doubt, there will be much for me to praise, and with that conviction in mind, I am very happy to accept the dedication of the 3rd volume." He goes on to make suggestions in a postscript regarding how Brassin indicates tempi, and lists the 15 accidentals that he noticed missing when playing through the first etude. Slightly worn; uniform light browning; creased at folds; edges slightly browned. A Bohemian pianist and composer of Jewish descent, Moscheles was one of Vienna's most popular pianists, "hailed as an equal and friend by Clementi and J.B. Cramer." He met the 15-year-old Mendelssohn in 1824 in Berlin and "gave him some finishing lessons on the piano." He went on to became principal professor of piano at the Leipzig Conservatory in 1846, recently founded by Mendelssohn. Known also as a conductor, Moscheles led the first London performance of Beethoven's Missa solemnis in 1832 and very successful performances of the Ninth Symphony in 1837 and 1838. "Hanslick assessed Moscheles as one of the last great representatives of the Classical school and also the beginner of a new epoch."The majority of Moscheles';s compositional output is piano music; some, including the sonatas, is of lasting consequence. Schumann considered Moscheles one of the best sonata composers of his generation. His piano method is best represented in his sets of studies, which are still used: Schumann saw these as bridging the gap between the age of Clementi and that of Chopin and being indebted to Bach';s Clavier-Übung." Jerome Roche and Henry Roche in Grove Music Online.Louis Brassin (1840-1884), the addressee, was a member of a well-known family of Belgian musicians that included his brothers, pianist Leopold Brassin and violinist Gerhard Brassin.

Confederate Navy Secretary Stephen Mallory orders Jeff Davis' nephew, Confederate naval hero John Taylor Wood, to conduct raids on Union shipping in Chesapeake Bay

Richmond, October 21, 1862. 8.25" x 8.25". "Civil War date Letter Signed, ""S R Mallory Sec of the Navy,"" 1 page, 8.25"" x 8.25"", Richmond, October 21, 1862 to Lieutenant John Taylor Wood, commanding the James River Squadron. Lower margin irregular, typical folds, else fine.Mallory's letter to Taylor reads in full: ""You are hereby detailed for special duty and will proceed to Chesapeake Bay and carry out as far as practicable the verbal orders from this office. Capt. S[ydney]. S[mith]. Lee will detail such officers & men as you may require to accompany you. You will keep the Dept. advised of your movements and report in person to this office on your return.""Already enjoying a degree of celebrity from his service aboard the C.S.S. Virginia during its historic duel with the ironclad Monitor, as well as a daring nighttime raid on the Chesapeake in early October in which he captured and destroyed the Union transport schooner Francis Elmore, Confederate Navy Secretary Mallory decided to bolster Taylor's support to mount more attacks. On the night of October 28, Wood led a raiding party of fifty men, in five boats, that boarded the ship Alleganian of New York, which had cleared Baltimore the previous week bound for London. The ship, loaded with guano, a much sought-after agricultural fertilizer. The ship, anchored at the mouth of the Rappahannock for the night proved an easy target. After tying up the officers, the raiders ransacked the ship for valuables and set it aflame before departing. The prisoners were transferred to Libby Prison, but the crew, who had been ordered to follow in a small boat, escaped and were picked up by the U.S.S. Monticello. Sidney Smith Lee (1802-1869) was Robert E. Lee's older brother and a career naval officer. Appointed mid-shipman in 1820 by 1853 he was in command of Commodore Perry's flagship during his historic expedition to Japan. Although he resigned his commission on April 17, 1861, the day Virginia seceded from the Union, the Navy did not accept the resignation, preferring to dismiss him from the service, which they did on April 22. Lee accepted a commission in the Confederate States Navy soon afterward, becoming commander of the Gosport Navy Yard. He later commanded batteries at Drewry's Bluffs, Virginia. In May 1864 Lee became chief of the Confederate Navy Bureau of Orders and Detail, remaining in that post until the end of the war. John Taylor Wood (1830-1904) , the son of Union General Robert Wood and Anne Taylor, the daughter of President Zachary Taylor, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1852. Initially maintaining a neutral stance following the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, his sympathies headed South after the Battle of Fort Sumter. On April 21, 1861, he resigned his commission in the U.S. Navy and retired to his Maryland farm. The farming life did not last long, however, as life was becoming too dangerous. Fearing for the safety of his family, the Woods moved south to Richmond, Virginias where his uncle, Jefferson Davis, was now presiding over the Confederate capital (Jefferson Davis' first wife, Sarah Taylor, was Wood's mother's sister). In October 1861, Taylor received a commission as a lieutenant in the Confederate States Navy and became an officer aboard the C.S.S. Virginia (the former U.S.S. Merrimack) and fought against he U.S.S. Monitor at the Battle of Hampton Roads. Wood commanded the rear pivot gun and fired the shot that wounded the Monitor's captain. Appointed an aide-de-camp to President Jefferson Davis, Wood was awarded the rank and pay of a colonel of cavalry, giving him simultaneous commands in both the Confederate Army and Navy allowing him to serve as an effective liaison between the services and the government in Richmond. In that capacity, Wood undertook an extensive survey of Confederate costal defenses. During the summer of 1863, he led a series of successful raids against Union shipping in Chesapeake Bay. In the summer of 1864, Wood commanded the C.S.S. Tallahassee, a raider and blockade runner. During his tenure aboard the Tallahassee, he captured an astounding 33 Union ships during a ten-day period off the coast of New England. By April 1865, the situation looked grim for the Confederacy. Wood was with his uncle on April 2, attending St. Paul's Church in Richmond, when a telegram from Lee arrived informing the president that Petersburg would soon fall and the government must evacuate. That evening, he, Davis, and other members of the Confederate government boarded a train for Danville, Virginia. They continued their flight south, where, on May 10, 1865, near the town of Irwinsville, Georgia, Davis and Wood were both captured by Union forces. Wood soon made his escape, with his uncle's permission, by bribing one of his captors and hiding in a nearby swamp until the Federals and their prisoners left the area. Wood made his way south to Florida and met up with Major General John C. Breckinridge. Acquiring a small boat, Wood, Breckinridge, and several other men first attempted to row east to The Bahamas, but abandoned the plan and decided to instead make their way south toward Cuba. He managed to trade with a crew of Union deserters his boat for their slightly bigger sloop. They reached the north shore of Cuban on June 10. He remained in Cuba for two weeks before heading north to Canada, where his family soon joined him. Reunited, they settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and remained there for the rest of their lives. John Taylor Wood died on July 19, 1904. "

        Goblin Market and Other Poems

Macmillan and Co., London 1862 - 19th c. full leather binding is quite heavily worn to hinges, corners and spine ends. Head and tail pieces lost. Top rear hinge is worn through to top 1" Clearly not in great condition but still solid for all that. Internally hinges worn at places but paper is still intact at at least half of it and the whole book is still solid. A previous owner's name on end paper. The biggest defect, which I think could easily be remedied by a good binder, is heavy offsetting/foxing to the first blank, the verso of the subsequent frontis and the title. There is also a water stain to the the base that affects the frontis, the engraved title and, to a lesser extent, the title. There are a couple of early pages that are a little grubby at base but nothing to bad. All edges gilt. Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Orley Farm . . . With illustrations by J. E. Millais

London: Chapman & Hall, 1862. First Edition. Half-Calf. Near Fine+. Complete in two octavo volume: viii,320; viii,320pp, with 40 full-page wood-engraved plates that Trollope considered the "best he had seen 'in any novel in any language.'" (Ray) Contemporary green polished half-calf spines in six compartments divided by double gilt rules, marble paper-covered boards, red morocco lettering pieces gilt, edges speckled red. Short tear (repaired) to plate opposite p. 49, vol. I. Ink manuscript name and date (1863) to fly leaf of voI II, with same inscription upside down to back fly leaf of vol. I, as well as a further ink name and date (1890) inscribed to front blank. A truly excellent set, bindings square, tight, and barely worn; pages clean, fresh and mostly free of foxing; plates in deep, rich impressions. Sadleir Trollope 13. NCBEL III, 882. Ray England 168. ¶ Trollope considered this lengthy book, a version of the crime, or "sensation," novel in vogue during the 1860s, one of his most ambitious undertakings and possibly his finest work. It is also among the most bibliographically complex. Unusually, the two volumes were not published simultaneously but nearly ten months apart, and subsequent reissues of each volume did not proceed in step. In consequence, Sadleir proposes that the "numerous combinations of varying volumes which exist are due, not always to careless mixing of sets between 1862 and the present day, but often to circumstances of publication." Orley farm originally appeared in twenty shilling parts, published monthly from March 1861 to October 1862. Our set is the second issue of four, identified by the two illustrations originally bound in tandem between pp. 86-87 (first issue) in vol. I, one of which (that captioned "And then they all marched . . .") has been moved to face p. 73 (though the List of Illustrations was not altered to correspond). But the printer's imprint on verso of title page, vol. I, has not yet changed to Clowes H and the imprint on p. 320 (Clowes B) is not worn and broken, both third issue points. Correspondingly, in vol. II, the printer's imprint on verso of title page does not lack the colon after "London" and the last item of the List of Illustrations has not been altered to read "Sir Peregrine Orme's Great Love—p. 311" (both third issue points). "Millais's main effort is to do justice to the characters of Trollope's wonderfully rich and varied novel and to the situations in which they find themselves, yet the comfort, even elegance, of Victorian existence on the right side of the social line is nowhere more attractively presented than in his forty drawing for this novel." (Ray) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

        Les Mis?rables.

New York: Carleton, Publisher, 1862. First American edition and first edition in English of Victor Hugo's masterpiece. Complete in five octavo volumes. Fantine (171 pages plus four-page publisher's advertisement), Cosette (164 pages plus four-page publisher's advertisement), Marius (150 pages plus two-page publisher's advertisement), Saint Denis (184 pages), and Jean Valjean (165 pages plus two-page publisher's advertisement). Publisher's matching cloth with gilt spine titles. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Victor Hugo's "great novel has been hailed as a masterpiece of popular literature, an epic poem in prose about God, humanity, and Hugo... Hugo hoped that Les Mis?rables would be one of if not the 'principal summits' of his body of works. Despite its length, complexity, and occasionally unbelievable plot and characterization, it remains a masterpiece of popular literature. It anticipates Balzac in its realism, but in its flights of imagination and lyricism, its theme of redemption, and its melding of myth and history, it is uniquely Hugo" (Dolbow, 149, 214). Charles E. Wilbour was hired by the Carleton Publishing Company to translate Hugo's grand masterpiece, and he did so very quickly, allowing the first American edition to be published within months of its French release. The intense advertising campaign waged by Carleton resulted in massive sales for Les Mis?rables, solidifying Hugo's epic in second place (behind only Uncle Tom's Cabin) in pre-Civil War American book sales.

Les Miserables (in 5 Volumes): I. Fantine; II. Cosette; III. Marius; IV: Saint Denis and The Idyl of the Rue Plumet; and V. Jean Valjean). WITH: Victor Hugo: By a Witness of His Life

New York: Carleton, 1862 - The first edition in English of Hugo's magisterial work, published in five volumes. The biography by his wife Adele Hugo, was issued in 1863 as a companion volume, because -- as the publisher's note observes -- "the Great Romance is a part of the life of Victor Hugo and cannot be fully understood without it." All six volumes are translated by Charles Edwin Wilbour. Althuogh uniform in design, the volumes are bound in different colors -- ninetheenth centuy publishers were generally haphazard about such matters. Volumes I and II are in terracotta cloth, Volume III is in green cloth, Volumes IV and V are in dark brown cloth. The life of Hugo is in light brown cloth. The condition of volumes I to IV is generally very good or better, with some wear especially to the corners. Volume V is in lesser condition, with surface wear to the cloth, and loss to the front gutter. The faults of Volume V are mitigated by its extraordinary provenance: the book bears an inscription on the front free endpaper from Union calvalry commander Colonel George Eliphaz Spencer (1836-1893) to his wife, Bella Z. Spencer (1840-1867), who appended her ownership signature to the first blank. Mrs. Spencer was the author of TRIED AND TRUE, OR, LOVE AND LOYALTY, A STORY OF THE GREAT REBELLION (1866), and other works based on her experiences as a soldier's wife. Her first book was inspired by meeting Southern refugees while accompanying her husband on campaigns in Tennessee and Alabama, at Paducah and the battle of Shiloh. As she wrote, "Sickness, want, even starvation came upon [the Refugees], when the hand of humanity was withheld. They were compelled to leave their homes, and wander friendless through the land." One imagines that Jean Valjean's struggles to maintain his humanity in a brutal and violent world must have held a special resonance for those who, like the Spencers, read Hugo amid the devastation of the Civil War. In all, a very appealing set of this literary and cultural landmark. [Attributes: First Edition]
