Ein Aufenthalt bei dem Groß-Scherif von Mekka. Leipzig, Bernhard Schlicke, 1862.

1862. Small 8vo? in 8s (17.5 x 12 cm). Set in fraktur types with the title and headings in textura types. [5], [1 blank], 391, [1] pp. Later boards covered with shell-marbled paper, maroon spine label, pink end-papers. First and only German edition of Didier's colourful account of his journey from Suez to Ta'if to meet the Sharif of Mecca, Abd al-Mutalib ibn Ghalib (ca. 1794-1862 or later), first published in French in 1857 as Séjour chez le Grand-Chérif de la Mekke. Didier (1805-1864) met Sir Richard Burton in Cairo months after his famous 1853 visit to Mecca, and briefly travelled with him (Burton mentions him in his own account of his pilgrimages to Mecca and Medina). He departed on his the present voyage from Suez in 1854, travelling through the Sinai to the Red Sea and Jeddah on the way to Ta'if. At this time the region was largely under Ottoman control and in 1856 they ousted Abd al-Mutalib, who had the support of the Bedouins, and returned his predecessor and rival Muhammed bin Adb al-Muin ibn Aun to power. Didier gives detailed accounts of the ruling families and the events of the period, and his book served as a basis for Karl May's German adventure story for children, In Mekka (1923).- Foxed throughout, but otherwise in good condition. An account of travels on the Arabian peninsula that inspired adventure stories. WorldCat (5 copies); cf. Blackmer 484 note (French ed.).

Corpo diplomatico portuguez. Contendo os actos e relações politicas e diplomaticas de Portugal com as diversas potencias do mundo, desde o seculo XVI até os nossos dias. Lisbon, Typographia da Academia Real das Sciencias / Imprensa Nacional, 1862-1959.

1862. Small folio (224 x 284 mm). 15 vols. (final vol. in 2 parts), uniformly bound in half tan sheep over decorated boards, spines gilt with raised bands in five compartments, decorated endleaves. Some original printed wrappers bound within. All edges sprinkled. First editions; all that was published of this massive project. The "Corpo diplomatico" deals with the relations between Portugal and the Roman Curia, presenting a chronologically arranged sequence of documents of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Portuguese Empire was the first global empire in history, and the sources here edited - frequently citing the significant Portuguese royal title of "King of Portugal and the Algarves, on this side of the sea, and on the other side in Africa, lord of Guinea and of the naval and commercial conquest of Ethiopia, Arabia, Persia, and India" - provide substantial information on the principal world issues and conflicts during that vast Empire's first era. Much of the diplomatic correspondence concerns conflicts between the worlds of Christianity and Islam: in one letter, King Manuel describes his attacks on and victories over the local Muslim rulers ("the Saracens are thrown into confusion"; "our men attacked and burned maritime towns belonging to the Saracens, situated on the mainland"; cf. vol. I, p. 116f.), and in a Papal Breve, Pius V praises the strengthening of the Maltese fortifications after the Great Siege of Malta ("erit opportunissimum adversus Turcas, et praedones Afros totius christiani populi propugnaculum", vol. X, p. 226). - Furthermore, there are reports on the Portuguese in Suez, Africa (including Angola, Mozambique, Guiné, Sofala, Morocco, Arguin, Cabo Verde, Congo, São Thomé, Ethiopia), Brazil (Bahia, Maranhão, Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco), the Azores, India (in nearly every volume, including Goa, Cochin, Damão, Malabar), and the Far East (Malacca and the Moluccas, with a few sections on Macau, China, and Japan scattered in vols. X-XIV). The work also provides a wealth of detail about the Inquisition and "cristãos novos" (both discussed in almost every volume), the Jesuits (vols. V-XV), the Council of Trent (vols. VI-X), Protestant activity (particularly in England), the Restauração, the Dutch in Brazil, the wars with the Turks on land and sea, and the activities of D. Sebastião and St. Charles Borromeu, the Order of Malta, and Cardinal Mazarin. Among the most notable texts are Ambassador Martinho's 1533 letter describing the forces defending Christianity in India and Africa, Bishop Lourenço Pires de Tavora's account of monasteries in India in 1561, and 25 letters written by P. Antonio Vieira from 1671 to 1675 (vol. XIV). - Marginal spotting in vol. XV, part 1; last 5 leaves remargined. Very discreet library markings on rear pastedown of each volume. Overall a very good set. Innocêncio IX, 95. OCLC 55783574.

The Oriental Album: Twenty illustrations in oil colors of the people and scenery of Turkey, with an explanatory and descriptive text. New York, Anson D. F. Randolph, 1862.

1862. Folio. Tinted lithographic additional title by Charles Parsons, printed by Endicott & Co., 20 chromolithographic plates by Parsons after van Lennep, all printed by Endicott & Co. of New York. Expertly bound to style in half dark green morocco over period patterned cloth covered boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. A rare and important color-plate book: one of the relatively few American costume books, and certainly the best such created in 19th-century America. This is a notable and unusual instance of the taste for the Ottoman or "Turkish" which manifested itself in the furniture of the period but seldom in books. In terms of American color-plate books, this is one of the only large projects from the 1860s, when the Civil War seems to have curtailed production of such lavish enterprises. "The one really big chromolithographic book of this decade [...] the art is simple, but [Charles] Parson's hand is obvious in the good lithography, and Endicott's printing is well done for its time" (McGrath). "Endicott achieved a rich variety of color which demonstrated the increased technical ability of American printers in the medium" (Reese). Henry Van Lennep was born in Smyrna, the son of European merchants. Educated, on the advice of American missionaries, in the United States, he returned to Turkey as a missionary in 1840, and spent most of the next twenty years in various parts of the Ottoman Empire. Returning to the United States in 1861, he turned his superb original drawings of Middle Eastern life into the Oriental Album. The plates include two scenes of Jewish life in the Ottoman Empire. Included are plates of "A Turkish Effendi", "Armenian Lady (at home)", "Turkish and Armenian Ladies (abroad)", "Turkish Scribe", "Turkish Lady of Rank (at home)", "Turkish Cavass (police officer)", "Turkish Lady (unveiled)", "Armenian Piper", "Armenian Ladies (at home)", "Armenian Marriage Procession", "Armenian Bride", "Albanian Guard", "Armenian Peasant Woman", "Bagdad Merchant (travelling)", "Jewish Marriage", "Jewish Merchant", "Gypsy Fortune Telling", "Bandit Chief", "Circassian Warrior", "Druse Girl." Bennett, p.108. Blackmer Catalogue 1715. Blackmer Sale 1500. DAB XIX, 200. McGrath, pp. 38, 115, 162. Reese, Stamped with a National Character 97. Atabey 1274.

ALBUM STORICO ARTISTICO: 1859 GUERRA D?ITALIA. Scritta dal corrispondente del Times al Campo Franco Sardo, con disegni dal vero di C. Bossoli - Lith. par les Fres F.& C. Perrin.

Paris/Turin, G. Perrin Editeur, 1862.

Corfu Tipografia Jonia 1862 - Italian, with some Hebrew (in rabbinic letters). 8vo, 14 pp., Recent boards. Through this sermon, delivered on Easter 1861, Rabbi D.       Montreal: John Lovell, 1862. First Edition. About Good/No Jacket. Montreal: John Lovell, 1862 This pioneer atlas and geography states first published in 1861 on the copyright page and contains the dated 1861 preferatory note but is dated 1862 on the title page. Thus it may be a later printing of the first edition, though I have yet to talk to anyone who had seen a copy with a 1861 dated titlepage. Worldcat lists only one microreproduction and no hard copy which may, (or may not), precede. 4to. (28cm.) Hard bound in original pictorial paper over boards with navy leather spine. P. 100. Rear cover text advertises the Lovell's Series of School books and is dated May 1861. Complete with all maps present. "It may be proper to state here that an entirely new series of maps has been constructed at great expense for this Geography by draftsmen in Canada". These 43 coloured maps by R. Barlow(17) of Montreal, F. N. Boxer(15) of Montreal, A. W. Graham(9) of Toronto & Montreal and two maps uncredited are historic early examples of the cartographer's art in Canada. These is an extremely rare item as extant copies have been "parted out" over the years for the mapping. It is my hope that there is an institution or collector out there that is willing to pay half of the "map value" to keep this chunk of Canadian Heritage whole. Condition: The binding is going and pages are loose but attached. Covers front and rear are edgeworn and soiled but all print and graphic elements are clearly visible. Map and interior quality is generally Very Good, excepting occasional small spots of foxing or soiling noted on some pages. There are no tears to any map. Scans on request, questions cheerfully answered and customer satisfaction quaranteed. Find out why 75 % of our business is from repeat customers. Extra shipping and insurance at cost to many destinations.. First Edition. About Good/No Jacket.

New York. 1862. - Seventeen loose plates, listed by numbering order on contents leaf. Very good. One of the relatively few American costume books, and certainly the best such created in 19th-century America. This is a notable and unusual instance of the taste for "Turkish" which manifested itself in the furniture of the period, but seldom in books. In terms of American color plate books, this is one of the only large projects from the 1860s, when the Civil War seems to have curtailed production of such lavish enterprises. "The one really big chromolithographic book of this decade.the art is simple, but [Charles] Parson's hand is obvious in the good lithography, and Endicott's printing is well done for its time" - McGrath. ".Endicott achieved a rich variety of color which demonstrated the increased technical ability of American printers in the medium" - Reese. 1) "Turkish and Armenian Ladies (abroad)" 2) "A Turkish Effendi" 4) "Turkish Scribe" 5) "Turkish Lady of Rank (at home)" 6) "Turkish Cavass (Police Officer)" 7) "Turkish Lady (unveiled)" 8) "Armenian Piper" 9) "Armenian Ladies (at home)" 10) "Armenian Marriage Procession" 11) "Armenian Bride" 12) "Albanian Guard" 13) "Armenian Peasant Woman" 14) "Baghdad Merchant (travelling)" 17) "Gypsy Fortune Telling" 18) "Bandit Chief" 19) "Circassian Warrior."       Placerville: Republican Printing Office, 1862. 128pp. 12mo. Original half leather and printed boards, spine gilt. Portions of spine perished, corners bumped, a few chips at edges. Ownership stamp on and correction slip tipped to front endpaper recto. Scattered foxing, else internally clean. Very good, in unsophisticated original condition. In a red cloth clamshell box. The first directory of this important gold mining region, and the first book printed in Placerville. James Marshall discovered gold in nearby Coloma in 1848 (he is listed in the Coloma section herein as "gold discoverer, south side Church street"), and the area became a center of gold mining activities for many years. By 1854, Placerville was the third largest town in California. The text contains a valuable history of the towns of Placerville (originally called "Dry Diggings" and also known as "Hangtown"), El Dorado, Georgetown, and Coloma, a directory of residents, municipal officers, churches, societies, etc., and advertisements for a variety of local businesses. Also included is a table of distances between principal cities in California. Thomas Fitch, the compiler, was publisher of the PLACERVILLE REPUBLICAN. He went to California in 1860, where he was active as a journalist, lawyer, and politician. He served one term as a U.S. Congressman from Nevada (1869- 71). Quebedeaux notes an errata slip, present in this copy, reading: "The sobriquet of 'Hangtown' was applied to Placerville not from the hanging of 'Irish Dick,' in 1850, but from the summary execution of the two Frenchmen and the Spaniard, who were hung in 1849, and not in 1854, as stated on page 11. No hanging, by a mob, has occurred here since 1850." This copy bears on the front endpaper recto the ink ownership stamp of James B. Hume, a well-known western lawman and a detective for Wells Fargo. Hume became the City Marshall of Placerville in 1864, then served as Sheriff for El Dorado County from 1865 to 1870. He became a Wells Fargo detective in 1872 and acted in that capacity until his death in 1904. In his most famous case he tracked down and arrested the stagecoach robber known as Black Bart in 1883. His stamp reads: "James B. Hume, Special Officer W.F. & Co. San Francisco, Cal." "Rare....Without a of the most important historical sources of the California gold region" - Quebedeaux. A vitally important source, and a rare and early California directory, with an interesting association. This copy realized $9600 at the Sloan auction in 2006. QUEBEDEAUX 11. GREENWOOD 1685. HOWES F159, P405, "aa." COWAN, p.171. ROCQ 1822. GRAFF 1339.
