Cygnus ferus [The Whistling or Wild Swan]

[London: by the Author, 1862 - 1873]. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Wolf and H.C.Richter, printed by Walter. Wove paper. 14 1/8 x 21 1/4 inches. A beautiful image from John Gould's 'The Birds of Great Britain': 'A magnificent work with life-like portraits of birds of the British Isles'. (Wood) This plate, from what Sacheverell Sitwell called 'The most popular of all his works' ('Fine Bird Books'), shows a new liveliness of treatment that is not present in Gould's earlier works. This is thanks to suggestions made by Joseph Wolf, who drew 57 of the plates and accompanied Gould on an ornithological tour of Scandinavia in 1856. Gould's illustrations were all painstakingly coloured by hand, as he states in his Preface: "Many of the public are quite unaware how the colouring of these large plates is accomplished; and not a few believe that they are produced by some mechanical process or by chromo-lithography. This, however, is not the case; every sky with its varied tints and every feather of each bird were coloured by hand. Cf.Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 102; cf. Nissen IVB 372; cf. Sauer 23; cf. Wood p. 365; cf. Zimmer p. 261.

How to Mix Drinks, or, the Bon-Vivant's Companion, containing clear and reliable directions for mixing all the beverages used in the United States, together with the most popular British, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish recipes, embracing punches, juleps, cobblers, etc. etc. etc., in endless variety. . . To which is appended A Manual for the Manufacture of Cordials, Liquors, Fancy Syrups, &c., &c., . . . Illustrated with Descriptive Engravings, the Whole Containing Over 600 Valuable Recipes. By Christian Schultz

Dick & Fitzgerald Publishers No. 18 Ann Street New York: Dick & Fitzgerald, Publishers, No. 18 Ann Street, 1862. Octavo, 243+[8] ads. First edition, second state, with the price of $1.50 on the front cover, but with the title, How to Mix Drinks... on the title page and on the front board. The first appearance of the book under the title this familiar title, following the first printing, first state, the title page and front board of which stated The Bar-Tender's Guide... There has always been some confusion over this point, but the book was originally advertised as The Bar-Tender's Guide as early as 1859, and the copyright was registered under this title (see David Wondrich, Imbibe, appendix I). Before Jerry ThomasÕ Bar-TenderÕs Guide, there were bartenders, to be sure, and there were also more than a few books about spirits, some which even involved ÒmixingÓ, mostly punches and the like, or recipes to cut cask strength booze down to size. Publishers Dick & Fitzgerald had intended to issue an anonymously-authored (like so many of their helpful publications) bar guide, and went so far as to register the copyright. But there is no evidence that they followed through with their plans, and so we are left with The Bar-TenderÕs Guide as the first real cocktail recipe book. And a dandy model it is for all the others to come. To begin with, Jerry Thomas was the real thing: a bartender who had traveled and worked in most of AmericaÕs great metropolitan cities vacuuming up cocktail recipes as he went, and a true showman, an aspect of bartending which is today still nearly as important as the drink mixing itself. ÒHe is a gentleman who is ablaze all in diamondsÉ he is engaged as a ÒstarÓ. (Edward Hingston, quoted in David WondrichÕs Imbibe). Dick and Fitzgerald had their doubts about the salability of this new type of book, and so the first edition was padded out with SchultzÕ Manual for the Manufacture of CordialsÉ Thankfully, the publishersÕ fears were misplaced, and the book sold 8000 copies, with the price rising to $2 and then $2.50 in the first edition. A new copyright was entered a the Library of Congress in 1876 with publication of the second edition which dropped SchultzÕ addendum. This copy complete but heavily worn, with light soiling and stains throughout, hinges shaken, corner of front endpaper torn. In original blind- and gilt-stamped green cloth, binding worn. The seminal work of American bartending, scarce in all issues of the first edition. [Noling Beverage Literature page 403].

Taillant sc. "The most sensitive and skilful French botanical artist of the period was Alfred Riocreux (1820-1912), who may be considered the Paris counterpart of Walter Hood Fitch ... Trained by his father, the boy progressed so rapidly with drawing and painting that the sketches which he made at the age of thirteen were considered worth preserving at Sèvres. The botanist Adolphe Théodore Brongniart (1801-76), whose father had also been employed at Sèvres, directed the attention of the young Riocreux to botany and was probably also responsible for bringing him to the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle. Here the young artist met Joseph Decaisne (1807-82), for whose superb 'Le Jardin Fruitier du Muséum' ... he made the drawings ..." (Blunt, pp. 229-230). G. Severyns, being responsible for the excellent chromolithographs in the above work, was the most gifted and most prominent lithographer of Belgium in the 19th century, who started his firm already in 1829 and remained the leading printing-establishment for nearly a whole century. Apart from light foxing to some of the plates a fine complete set.

General Orders No.1, January 2, 1863, is the first widely circulated version of the Emancipation Proclamation [see Eberstadt, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, 12].
