Atlas Ichthyologique des Indes Orientales Néêrlandaises. Publié sous les auspices du Gouvernement Colonial Néêrlandais.

Amsterdam, F. Muller, 1862-1865. Volumes 1-5 (of 9) volumes. Folio (450 x 295 mm). With 240 plates of which 238 superbly chromo-lithographed. Later half cloth library bindings, the last volume loose in original printed wrappers. There is no title to volume 5 and the text runs from page 1-96 (of 152), the plates 232-240 belong to volume 6, library stamp on titles. A complete copy has 9 vols and 420 plates and was published from 1862 to 1878. A magnificent ichthyological atlas, the most splendid work on fishes of the nineteenth century. It is the only major work on the fishes of the Indo-Pacific ocean. In 1845 Bleeker started his project, however the first printing was realised 18 years later. Due to his death the work remained unfinished. During his life Bleeker sent more than 12.000 fishes from the East Indian Archipelago to Holland. The edition of the present work must have been very small as Bleeker in his biography mentions only 60 subscribers. The plates are splendidly executed after drawings by L. Speigler and chromolithographed by C.W. Mieling and later by Emrik & Binger. According to Junk, Rara p. 140 'les planches chromo-lithographiées sont d'une exécution magnifique et sont en effet les meilleures que la litérature moderne d'Ichthyologie a produit. Bleeker est l'auteur le plus fertile de sa science'. //The volumes are composed as follows: I. Scaroïdes et Labroïdes; II. Siluroïdes, Chacoïdes et Hétérobranchoïdes; III. Cyprins; IV. Murènes, Synbranches, Leptocéphales; V. Baudroies, Ostracions, Gymnodontes, Balistes.//Junk, Rara 140; Nissen ZBI, 409.

Letters of Reasons, Separation of the Roman Church from the Eastern.

Typography of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, St. Petersburg 1862 - recent ½ calf with marbled boards, spine with 5 compartments of raised bands title in gilt., Text in RussianIn the 11th century the Great Schism took place between Rome and Constantinople, which led to separation of the Church between the Roman Catholic Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Church. There were doctrinal issues like authority of the Pope involved in the split, but these were exacerbated by cultural and linguistic differences between Latins and Greeks. The final breach is often considered to have arisen after the sacking of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The sacking of the Church of Holy Wisdom and establishment of the Latin Empire in 1204 is viewed with some rancour to the present day.The Russian Orthodox Church also known as the Orthodox Catholic Church of Russia, is that body of Christians who are united under the Patriarch of Moscow, who in turn is in communion with the other patriarchs and primates of the Eastern Orthodox Church., Size : 4to, P. half-title, blank, title, printer?s imprint, (2), i-xxiv, (2), 1-434, (2), 1-6, 1-49, (1) Mild occasional foxing otherwise an excellent copy.         British Entomology;.

being illustrations and descriptions of the genera of insects found in Great Britain and Ireland; containing coloured figures from nature of the most rare and beautiful species, and in many instances of the plants upon which they are found. London, Lovell Reeve & Co., 1862. 8 volumes. Royal-8vo (236 x 147mm). With 770 handcoloured engraved (some lithographed) plates and descriptive text. Contemporary half citron morocco, spines in 6 compartments with gilt lines, gilt edges, frontcovers with gilt coat of arms of Sherborne library (Lord Digby). A splendidly bound copy of noble provenance. One of the most beautifully illustrated works on British insects. The first edition was published by the author in parts from 1824-1839 and once described by Cuvier as 'the paragon of perfection'. 'His artistic trademark was the depiction of insects on or by their corresponding foodplant... ' (Salmon p. 138), which render the plates particularly charming. John Curtis was born in Norwich in 1791, son of an engraver, and his mother was described as a 'cultivator of flowers'. At the age of sixteen he went to work for a local solicitor and began to supplement his income by collecting and selling insect specimens to the gentlemen entomologists of the day and learnt the art of scientific illustration. His first published illustrations appeared in Kirby and Spence's bestseller 'Introduction to Entomology' (1815-26). In 1817 he went to London where he met many of the leading natural historians, such as Sir Joseph Banks./"John Curtis is described as the first entomologist to earn a living, albeit a rather poor one, as a scientist. He liked to travel although it proved difficult because of his financial problems but he collected extensively in Britain, Ireland and Europe. In 1825 he travelled to Scotland by steam packet and returned by land, walking most of the way and collecting insects and adding thirty-two new species to the British list - all material for his dream work 'British Entomology'" (Gilbert p. 142).//Provenance: Armorial bookplate of Sherborne Library on verso of frontcover.//Nissen ZBI, 1000; B.M.(N.H.)I, 407.

Bound Volume of Handbills for Musical Performances at two German theaters: W. Diehm's Forsyth Street Conzert-halle and Steuben Haus in New York City

Lauter & Becker, [New York] 1862 - Octavo. Quarter calf and marbled papercovered boards. Text in German. Spine perished, both boards detached, modest foxing and small chips and stains, particularly on the last couple of handbills, overall good or better. The volume contains 46 handbills for German musical comedies and light operas, as follows: 40 handbills printed rectos only for Wilhelm Diehm's Forsyth St. Conzert-halle (hand-numbered 2-41; apparently one is lacking) and six handbills printed rectos only for Steuben Haus in the Bowery (hand-numbered 42-47). Each show seems to have run for a week or two, and as they run consecutively, one can be reasonably certain that Steuben Haus suceeded the Forsyth Street Conzert-halle. The proprietor of Forsyth Street is listed as Nathaniel Rosenbaum, but Steuben Haus was founded and run by Sixtus Ludwig Kapff, a Wuerttemberg revolutionist who was forced to flee to the U.S when the 1848 movement was crushed. He served briefly in the Union Army before returning to New York City to found his theater. During the 19th Century, New York had the third largest German population of any city in the world, and musical theatre played an important role in the immigrant population's community, and one imagines even more so during the Civil War. Perhaps because of the language barriers, surprisingly little research has been done on the subject. A nice volume of ephemeral handbills that helps illustrate the vibrancy of the German musical theatre in daily immigrant life. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Urging Northern Laborers to Vote Republican and Support Worker's Rights

New York, NY 1862 - Broadsheet. The Rebellion and Its Purposes, October 6, 1862, New York, N.Y., published by The Iron Platform, 1 p., 10 1/2 x 16 3/4 in. "I maintain, my dear sir, that the war of rebellion is not a war of resistance against 'Abolitionism,' but that it is a war of resistance against Democracy." Excerpt"I am a Working Man. It may appear presumptuous in a "working man" to address the authorized representative of a great political party, at a time of profound excitement and activity like the present, upon either political or philosophical questions, but I cannot forget the fact, that if the candidates of the Democratic Party are successful at the polls, they will be elected by the votes of the Working Men of Pennsylvania, and, inasmuch as you claim their votes, it will be consistent with your dignity and your democratic principles to accord to them a hearing, even though it be through the medium of a volunteer advocate.By virtue of my brotherhood of Labor, and my right as a citizen, I claim your generous indulgence for obtruding upon your notice. Two important papers appear in the pages of these documents. The first is the "Address of the Democratic State Central Committee," and the other the "Platform," of the Democratic Party. To these I shall as brief as possible direct my observations. A class of men in the South.were determined to rule the nation in their own interest, and to convert the Government into a great national engine for their own purposes, and who found in slavery a vast and powerful political and commercial agency to effect their designs. Propagandism became their law-they were not content with "the sufficient constitutional guarantees" of which Alexander H. Stephens assured his hearers, but insisted upon making the Government an instrument for the patronage, perpetuation and extension of slavery-a local and state institution-at the expense and by the power of the whole people. The Constitution was not enough for the leaders of the treason-they wanted to override that instrument in order to destroy it. To effect this object they plotted secretly for many years, and when they believed the time had come for their crime against freedom, and against the Union and humanity-when they thought that their desperate ambition, and their aristocratic purposes had ripened, they destroyed the Democratic Party, in order that they might destroy Democracy. It was not the election of Mr. Lincoln, nor the Fugitive Slave Law-nor Personal Liberty Bills-that provoked the Rebellion. It was not the "Abolitionism of which you speak. It is plain that the bold and atrocious scheme of treason, so long cherished, so carefully matured, so systematically consummated, was not a sudden outbreak of indignation, but the most astounding development of organized perfidy on the part of men who had long enjoyed the confidence of a free people which the history of the world can produce. To the Working Men of Pennsylvania, my comrades in Labor, I simply say-Vote now for the men who are true to the cause of freedom, of progress, and of humanity.Wm Oland Bourne."Historical BackgroundThe Iron Platform was a New York City newspaper devoted to worker's issues. It was published between 1856 and 1864 and was decidedly pro-Union during the Civil War. The paper concentrated on how the Confederacy was bent on creating a government that would destroy the rights of free labor. The war was more than a question of control of the government and benefits distributed, it was instead a "contest.and it is of the utmost importance that every working man understand it clearly. If he would be a freeman, and enjoy the blessings of liberty for himself and his children-if he would be true to himself and the working men of the South-if he would be true to the interests of Labor throughout the world he must work and vote to overthrow rebellion and treason and maintain the government at every cost."Long before he became preside.         The Lord Mayor of London

sp;- London - Chapman and Hall 1862 - An uncommon first edition of this historical novel by William Harrison Ainsworth. One of the most difficult to source. Fading to spines as normally seen. No half titles called for. Complete in three volumes. William Harrison Ainsworth (4 February 1805 3 January 1882) was an English historical novelist born in Manchester. He trained as a lawyer, but the legal profession held no attraction for him. While completing his legal studies in London he met the publisher John Ebers, at that time manager of the King's Theatre, Haymarket. Ebers introduced Ainsworth to literary and dramatic circles, and to his daughter, who became Ainsworth's wife. Ainsworth briefly tried the publishing business, but soon gave it up and devoted himself to journalism and literature. His first success as a writer came with Rookwood in 1834, which features Dick Turpin as its leading character. A stream of 39 novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881. Ainsworth died in Reigate on 3 January 1882. Condition: In cloth covered bindings. Externally, sound with shelfwear and bumping. Internally, firmly bound, bright and generally clean clean with the odd spot and mark. Publisher's ink stamp to each title page. Overall: VERY GOOD [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Fullarton, London 1862 - An important map of BC done before the famous Trutch map of BC. The areas of the Fraser Valley Gold rush and the Cariboo Gold Rush are outlined on the map.The time that the map was done coincides with the end of the Faser Canyon Gold rush in 1860 and the beginning of the Cariboo Gold Rush.Faser Canyon Gold rush occurred in 1858 after gold was discovered on the Thompson River at its confluence with the Nicoamen River, a few miles upstream from the Thompson's confluence with the Fraser at present-day Lytton. The Cariboo Gold Rush was a gold rush in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Although the first gold discovery was made in 1859 at Horsefly Creek, followed by more strikes at Keithley Creek and Antler Creek in 1860, the actual rush did not begin until 1861, when these discoveries were widely publicized. By 1862, following the strikes at William's Creek, the gold rush was in full effect., Size : 420x540 (mm), 16.5x21.25 (Inches), Original Hand Coloring

Some scattered minor stains, mostly marginal. Overall in very good to fine condition. ---- FIRST EDITION of this collection of 100 poems addressed to the poet's wife, on a wide variety of subjects and in varying meters.Gonçalves de Magalhães (1811-1882, a native of Rio de Janeiro) was an important author of nineteenth-century Brazilian fiction and poetry. Inspired by the European Romantics, he founded @Niterói: Revista brasiliense in Paris in 1836, and was considered the elder member of the new Romantic school when he returned to Brazil. His notable work in the Romantic style is @Suspiros poeticos e saudades, Paris 1836. In his later works, including the @Confederação and @Antônio José, he returned to a more classicizing style.Magalhães's work has suffered the extremes of lavish praise and bitter condemnation. José de Alencar said of the @Confederação, "Bem sei que o Sr. Magalhães não teve pretensões de fazer uma Ilíada ou Odisséia americana; mas quem não é Homero deve ao menos procurar imitar os mestres; quem não é capaz de criar um poema, deve ao menos criar no poema alguma coisa" (quoted in @Nossos Clássicos 55, p. 107; see also pp. 10-12). Putnam, on the other hand, calls him "one of the greatest poets that Brazil has produced ? he is near to being the national poet, one who was enthusiastically acclaimed by the people even before he was by the elite" (p. 111).---- Innocêncio IX, 143: calling for iv, 344 pp. Sacramento Blake II, 219: without collation.
