Title and some additional leaves moderately foxed, remainder slightly foxed; publisher's handstamp to lower right corner of title, slightly trimmed; offsetting to pp. 234-35. First Edition. Schneider p. 1414. "La circassienne was one of Auber's last operas, composed when he was nearly 80 years old. His librettist, Eugène Scribe, had been Auber's regular collaborator since 1823 and had written the libretto for his greatest success, Fra Diavolo. The opera was premiered by the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 2 February 1861 in a production directed by Ernest Mocker. In his review of the premiere for Le Ménestrel, Jacques Heugel praised the score as Auber's 'most youthful, clever, and refined music', admirably adapted to Scribe's witty libretto and demonstrating once again that he was 'the French musician par excellence'. He went on to describe the opening night as 'a true success' with the audience 'in raptures'. However, the opera's success proved to be short-lived. In October 1861 an adapted English version of La circassienne was given three performances by the Caroline Richings opera company in Philadelphia, but it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carl Dietrich Alexander Hartkopff (1820-1877).
Leipzig, Oskar Leiner, s.d. (after 1861, but not later than 1870).. Typographic wall bill. Size: 18.5 x 13 inches. Two folds (not causing any defects). Fine condition. Very rare. The only other copy I could trace is held in Leipzig (Stadtgeschichtliches Museum). - Carl Dietrich Alexander Hartkopff (1820-1877) was one of the most active exhibitors of a travelling museum in Northern Europe during the 1860s and 70s. Traces of his tours can be found in many contemporary periodicals, which oftenly contain small ads or reviews and recommendations by visitors. Two of such reviews of his cabinet we also find in the lower part of this wall bill, all praising the exhibition as being of high value for any scholar of natural history and biological sciences in general (one dated march, 1862). The museum contained waxworks, models, preparats and natural specimen, but no living animals as was oftenly still the case with travelling cabinets or museums a decade earlier. But the distinction of whether an item was a preparat or natural specimen ('Naturgegenstand'), or whether it was an artificial model or sculpture worked from materials like wax ('Kunstgegenstand'), had little importance for him. It does not in all cases come clear from the description, what kind of the items were. Reading only the text of the bill one could have the impression, that his exhibition would mostly roamed waxworks, but contemporary reviews of the exhibition also mention a great variety of entomological, ornithological, and conchological specimens, all those not mentioned in the bill. The reason may well be found … [Click Below for Full Description]
