Paxton, Joseph
Chatsworth, England: 1861. A four-page letter on folded letterhead of Chatsworth handwritten and signed by Joseph Paxton. The letter reads: "Dec. 15, 1861. My dear Sir, Mr George Edward Smythe son of Mr Smythe the contractor, who resides at Reigate wishes to become a member of the Reform Club. I put his name down last Wednesday, and advised him to ask his father to beg you to second the nomination. The enclosed note will show you how the matter stands. I don't want to ask Edwin Clark to second him as I know he is not a reformer of our stamp, having helped the Tories last election & he has also assisted them in favor of the church state? question. Young Smythe is a nice quick young fellow, and I want him to be hatched into political life by sincere Reformers. It will only take you five minutes to go up to the club and perform this little ceremony. I hope we shall be wise and moderate in this most unfortunate American difficulty. I am my dear Sir yours faithfully?, Joseph Paxton." Comes with an original 1851 engraved portrait of Paxton by J. Jenkins from a photograph by W. E. Kilburn. Condition for both items is very good. ; Letters; Signed by Author.

Fremont, Jesse Benton.
Washington: 1861. Autograph letter, signed, one sheet of text, includes mailing envelope. A little soiling or staining, legible hand, normal aging, envelop with normal wear and aging; otherwise very good. John C. Fremont (1813-1890) was appointed a Major General by President Abraham Lincoln in 1861, and gave him the command of the Department of the West. While Fremont had earned considerable fame as an explorer of the West, his tenure as a Union General appears to be much less impressive. After almost driving Missouri into the Confederacy with his brash actions, he was moved to Virginia and after a weak performance against Stonewall Jackson at the Battle of Cross Keys, he would resign his command after being placed under General John Pope's command Fremont had a strong dislike for the man). Fremont would become the territorial Governor of Arizona after the war, and would actually be a Presidential candidate in 1864, before withdrawing. Jessie Benton Fremont (1824-1902), the author of this letter and wife of John C. Fremont, was a popular American writer and political activist. Her letter appears to be to the wife of Dr. Samuel Elton, and is written on her own embossed stationary. The letter is a tank you for sending some socks to General Fremont. "The beautiful knit socks came safely to the Genl. And you must let me send you something or ours in return." The letter is signed by Jessie Benton Fremont. Civil War Trust.

Windsor Kemble, Edward (1861-1933)
19th Century. Color lithograph. 7 x 10 inches. Framed but unglazed. (January 18, 1861 - September 19, 1933) was an American illustrator. He is known best for illustrating the first edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and for his cartoons of African Americans. Edward Windsor Kemble was a young illustrator for a New York humor magazine called Life in 1884 when Mark Twain hired him to do the illustrations for Huck Finn. His drawings of Jim, as he himself put in a 1930 essay on "Illustrating Huckleberry Finn," "started something in [his] artistic career." Magazine editors, southern writers and the American reading public were so pleased with Kemble's representation of African American characters that by the time Houghton Mifflin recruited him to illustrate their 1892 two-volume edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin he was a specialist in what he called "negro drawings." Because of Kemble's association with the works of authors like Joel Chandler Harris and Thomas Nelson Page -- the post-Reconstruction Southern writers who sought to revise Stowe's account of the ante bellum South -- the decision to use his version of slaves is an indication of how, by the 1890s, the distance between Stowe's attack on slavery and nostalgic apologies for it had narrowed. Windsor Kemble, Edward (1861-1933)
19th Century. Color lithograph. 7 x 10 inches. Framed and glazed.
