BALZAC (Honoré de).
E. Caen, Paris, 1861.

Hügel, J[ulius] Frhr. von / G. F. Schmidt.
Stuttgart, Ebner & Seubert, [1861]. Large 8vo. (4), XVI, 220, 8 pp. With 7 colour plates (some folding) and numerous text illustrations. Publisher's blind- and giltstamped orange cloth. Rare first edition of this study of the famous stud of Wilhelm, King of Württemberg. W. R. Brown states that the Royal stud was run from 1852 to 1871 by Baron Julius von Hügel, who purchased valuable stock from the Egyptian stud of Abbas Pasha, "thus raising it to the highest standard of excellence" (The Horse of the Desert, p. 161/166). Al Khamsa researchers relied upon this text as a source for the Al Khamsa Arabians II Europa Foundation Stock information. While a reprint was produced in 1973, the book has not been published in an English translation; Judith Forbis (The Classic Arabian Horse, p. 137) explains that her summary statements about von Hügel's book are based upon a private translation by author Erika Schiele. - Some foxing throughout, still a good copy. Not in Huth. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Davis, Jefferson]
[Richmond: Hoyer and Ludwig, 1861. Lithograph, 25cm x 35cm. Matted. A bit toned at extreme edges, Fine. An unusually rare Confederate imprint, a lithograph depicting Jefferson Davis in full military uniform astride his horse. Parrish & Willingham located a single copy in a private collection. "General Leonidas Polk remained convinced up to a month before the Battle of Bull Run that 'Davis will take the field in person when the movement is to be made.'" [Gabor, Jefferson Davis's Generals, page 137]. Although Davis did visit the battlefield, he probably was not in uniform. In creating the lithograph, Hoyer and Ludwig apparently manipulated an existing equestrian portrait by superimposing Davis's head [which is slightly at the wrong angle]. "J.C. Hoyer, a jeweler, and Charles Ludwig, a German-born printmaker, became associates in the lithography trade at the beginning of the war. Their brief partnership, which dissolved by 1866, nevertheless was responsible for several of the rare surviving Confederate graphics" [Neely, Holzer et al, 'The Confederate Image: Prints of the Lost Cause,' page 13]. The firm "was responsible for creating some of the few examples of single-sheet Confederate graphics of which there are today some surviving copies, including... PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS ARRIVING IN THE FIELD OF BATTLE AT BULL'S RUN" [Wagner et al., The Library of Congress Civil War Desk Reference, page 810]. Parrish & Willingham 6176 [1- a private collection]. OCLC 191117184 [1- AAS] [as of May 2018].
