Hügel, J[ulius] Frhr. von / G. F. Schmidt.
Stuttgart, Ebner & Seubert, [1861]. Large 8vo. (4), XVI, 220, 8 pp. With 7 colour plates (some folding) and numerous text illustrations. Publisher's blind- and giltstamped orange cloth. Rare first edition of this study of the famous stud of Wilhelm, King of Württemberg. W. R. Brown states that the Royal stud was run from 1852 to 1871 by Baron Julius von Hügel, who purchased valuable stock from the Egyptian stud of Abbas Pasha, "thus raising it to the highest standard of excellence" (The Horse of the Desert, p. 161/166). Al Khamsa researchers relied upon this text as a source for the Al Khamsa Arabians II Europa Foundation Stock information. While a reprint was produced in 1973, the book has not been published in an English translation; Judith Forbis (The Classic Arabian Horse, p. 137) explains that her summary statements about von Hügel's book are based upon a private translation by author Erika Schiele. - Some foxing throughout, still a good copy. Not in Huth. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Davis, Jefferson]
[Richmond: Hoyer and Ludwig, 1861. Lithograph, 25cm x 35cm. Matted. A bit toned at extreme edges, Fine. An unusually rare Confederate imprint, a lithograph depicting Jefferson Davis in full military uniform astride his horse. Parrish & Willingham located a single copy in a private collection. "General Leonidas Polk remained convinced up to a month before the Battle of Bull Run that 'Davis will take the field in person when the movement is to be made.'" [Gabor, Jefferson Davis's Generals, page 137]. Although Davis did visit the battlefield, he probably was not in uniform. In creating the lithograph, Hoyer and Ludwig apparently manipulated an existing equestrian portrait by superimposing Davis's head [which is slightly at the wrong angle]. "J.C. Hoyer, a jeweler, and Charles Ludwig, a German-born printmaker, became associates in the lithography trade at the beginning of the war. Their brief partnership, which dissolved by 1866, nevertheless was responsible for several of the rare surviving Confederate graphics" [Neely, Holzer et al, 'The Confederate Image: Prints of the Lost Cause,' page 13]. The firm "was responsible for creating some of the few examples of single-sheet Confederate graphics of which there are today some surviving copies, including... PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS ARRIVING IN THE FIELD OF BATTLE AT BULL'S RUN" [Wagner et al., The Library of Congress Civil War Desk Reference, page 810]. Parrish & Willingham 6176 [1- a private collection]. OCLC 191117184 [1- AAS] [as of May 2018].

Robert E. Lee
Lee rather unsympathetically tells General G.W. Smith that if he wants his medical leave extended, he will have to go through channels An increasingly uncommon letter of Lee as commander of the Army of Northern Virginia Gustavus Woodson Smith saw action in the Mexican War and was breveted for gallantry three times. He then taught at West Point when the Superintendent there was Robert E. Lee. The two became well acquainted at that time. Smith was Street Commissioner of the city of New York when the Civil War began, and he determined to join the Confederacy. But though only 39 years of age, he had a stroke just then and could not leave immediately, finally going South in September, 1861. Jefferson Davis thought highly of him and immediately commissioned him a major general. Smith was sent straight to the Army of Northern Virginia as a division commander under Joseph E. Johnston, and soon became second in command. Johnston placed him in command of one wing of the army, and he was one of the Confederacy’s brightest lights. But when the Army of Northern Virginia moved to the Peninsula to face Union General George B. McClellan's advancing forces in the spring of 1862, Smith began to have strange medical conditions that may well have been psychological. The mental strain and responsibility of commanding large bodies of troops proved too much for him. Perhaps his problems resulted from the damage that had been caused by the stroke. The Battle of Seven Pines occurred on May 31, 1862 and General Joseph E. Johnston was wounded there. Command of the army passed to Smith. President … [Click Below for Full Description]

[South Africa]: [Photography]
Cape Town: Saul Solomon, 1861. xii,180pp. plus photographically illustrated titlepage and sixteen mounted albumen photographs. Quarto. Original publisher's cloth, stamped in gilt, rebacked with most of original spine laid down. Corners lightly worn. Contemporary ownership inscription on front fly leaf. Light foxing and toning, heavier in some places. Most images clean, though one or two with some light foxing at the edges. Very good. An early photographically illustrated book, and the first such book printed on the African continent. The volume was made to commemorate the visit of Alfred, Duke of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha, one of Queen Victoria's sons. The book was designed to showcase the colony, which had hitherto been viewed in a less than positive light by the general British public. Prince Alfred was well-received by the colonists in South Africa, and the volume contains many positive facts about the colony's usefulness to the British Empire. The book includes seventeen images by photographer Joseph Kirkman, who was active in South Africa from 1859 to 1870. Some of the images in this volume are photographs of drawings or other artwork, but others do capture live scenes along the Prince's route, including a grand portrait of the African chief Moshesh and his advisors. The chief is pictured seated in the center of the image, dressed in a top hat and suit, holding a cane. The man seated next to him glowers at the camera and is draped in an animal pelt and holds a spear. Four men, all in Western dress, stand arrayed behind them. The images taken from life during the P … [Click Below for Full Description]
