Rorison, G.
Edinburgh and London, Blackwood & Sons, 1861. 8vo (19.0 x 12.4 cm). 180 pp., several text engravings. Publisher's blind-tooled cloth. Gilt title on the spine. Few works have had as much impact on the intellectual world as Darwin's On the Origin of Species. The work was too important to be ignored and many writers, scholars, and intellectuals tried to fathom its meaning and add their own two cents. The Scottish author Gilbert Rorison (1821-1869) was one of them. Educated at Glasgow University, and minister in the Scottish Episcopal Church, he is best known for his "Hymns and Anthems adjusted to the Church Services throughout the Christian Year", first published in 1851. He should, however, not be dismissed as just one of the many opponents of Darwin whose views were solely based on biblical scripture. In this work he gives a fair account of the geology and palaeontology of Scotland. More importantly, he received the help of Darwin's most powerful opponent, Richard Owen. Darwin, however, remained sceptical, and even saw the humour of it. In a letter to Thomas Huxley he wrote: "In a little Book, just published, called the Three Barriers (a theological hash of old abuse of me) Owen gives to the Author a new resume of his Brain doctrine & I thought you would like to hear of this. He ends with a delightful sentence. ‘No science affords more scope or easier ground for the caviller & controversialist; & these do good by preventing scholars from giving more force to generalisations than the master propounding them does, or meant his readers or hearers to give’. You will blush with p … [Click Below for Full Description]

[No place or printer], 1861. Small folio. Bound in contemporary half vellum. Dampstaining in top corner throughout. Binding slightly loose. Pp. 48 + 5 folded tables. Rare first edition (only?) of Neapolitan police inspector Angelo Falangola's account of a plea made on behalf of imprisoned debtors for an amnesty. This most likely unprecedented legal action is documented in detail, reprinting the correspondence between Falangola, different legal instances and Garibaldi's permission to free the debtors.During the height of the final battles for Italian unity and against the remnants of autocracy in Southern Italy, when Garibaldi figured as 'Dittatore dell'Italia Meridionale Generale Garibaldi,' the Neapolitan inspector of the police Angelo Falangola made a plea on behalf of imprisoned debtors for an amnesty, which was granted by Garibaldi, after a collection of money had been carried out in all Neapolitan provinces in order to raise money as a guarantee for the debts. Falangola here presents a documentation of the history of this amnesty, the legal and financial wranglings, including tables of the debtors, the amount of debts and the creditors. The amnesty was given during the famous Expedition of the Thousand; an event of the Italian Risorgimento took place in 1860. A corps of volunteers led by Giuseppe Garibaldi landed in Sicily in order to conquer the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, ruled by the Bourbons. The project was an ambitious and risky venture to conquer, with a thousand men, a kingdom with a larger regular army and a more powerful navy. The expedition was a success and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Abbott, Sir James
London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1861 First and only edition, inscribed "To Baron & Baroness Brantsen, o. d. Zyss, With kindest remembrances and best wishes from the author's wife. Christmas 1868, Richmond House" on the initial blank. Sir James Abbott (1807-1896) was an army officer and colonial administrator best remembered for his success in pacifying the tribal regions of the North West Frontier as commissioner for the Hazara region from 1845 to 1853, for which the city of Abbottabad was named in his honor. He was also "an imaginative writer of the romantic verse" (ODNB), and was described by Sir Henry Lawrence as a "true knight-errant". In the preface to his re-imagining of the Prometheus myth, he claims to have consciously deviated from the versions of Aeschylus and Shelley. The Brantsens were an aristocratic family from Arnhem in the Netherlands. Willem Gerard Brantsen van de Zijp (1831-1899) succeeded his father, Derk, as the baron in 1851 (Zyss apparently an alternative spelling for Zijp). Uncommon: just four copies traced in British and Irish institutional libraries (British Library, Oxford, Cambridge and National Library of Scotland), and four world-wide, all in the United States.

Edward Stanford, 1861. - A four sheet map, in this case the four sheets have been sectionalised, joined together and mounted on linen. Hand coloured 1310 x 1140 mm. One of the primary European sources for information on the Civil War which was updated regularly. The bottom two sections are dated October, 1861; the top two sections are undated as the lower margins have been removed to combine the four sheets. The map shows the United States from New York City on the east end to the western parts of Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa on the west end. On the north the map shows the area to Montreal in Canada on the east end and the southern parts of Minnesota on the west end. The Gulf Coast and the mouth of the Mississippi are covered on the south and the southern part of Florida is shown in an inset map (205 mm x 190 mm) placed in the Atlantic. Railroads are shown by a large number of red lines throughout the country. A large inset map (265 mm x 190 mm) in the bottom-right corner of the map shows the whole United States, from coast to coast, and is coloured in full by State. The inset map is very up to date showing Colorado, created as a Territory just 7 months prior to the publication of this map. A large Nebraska is shown covering the area of present day Wyoming and Montana, Arizona is south of New Mexico, Nevada's border with California runs along the Sierra Nevada mountain range and the Territory has no southern tip which is still a part of New Mexico. Oregon and Washington occupy present day Idaho. Not in Rumsey.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

(Faithfull, Emily.) Procter, Adelaide A.
London: Emily Faithfull and co., Victoria Press (for the Employment of Women), Great Coram Street, W.C., 1861. Royal 8vo, viii, 349 pages. Original red cloth elaborately stamped in gilt, gilt edges, with Smith and Collings’ ticket (usually it is Westley’s or Leighton’s). Backstrip restored, recased with new endpapers but saving the binders’ ticket, internally a very good copy. First edition of the first book printed by Emily Faithfull, marking the opening of the Victoria Press whose books were printed and illustrated entirely by women. Several contributions by important writers including Tennyson and Thackeray; the illustrations are unattributed beyond “designed by a lady intimately connected with our work” (preface) but as Faithfull’s sister was an accomplished artist whose hand is very evident in the two other books of the Press (Te Deum and 38 Texts) one wonders if she must have had some part in the production of her sister’s first book. Beckwith 10. Fredeman, p. 147 et seq. Amazingly, not in McLean Victorian Book Design or Victorian Publishers’ Book-Bindings. Robin de Beaumont notes that this is the most elaborate of the three cloth bindings he was aware of -- there was also a de luxe leather binding
