DICKENS, Charles
Chapman & Hall, London, 1861. 3 volumes. 8vo, plum colored cloth, blind-tooled on front & back covers; gilt lettering on the spine dulled, but readable. London: Chapman & Hall, 1861. First Edition. 32 pages of ads, correctly dated in three places, and all the misprints called for by Eckel. The inner hinges have all been repaired; the flyleaves are soiled, and one has been professionally repaired, as have the corners of two of the volumes. All in all a decent set of a scarce title considering that almost all copies were purchased by libraries and either re-bound or heavily used. Preserved in a blue leather clam-shell case (front hinge neatly repaired). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

E J Lowe and W Howard
London : Groombridge and Sons, 1861 A fair copy of the 1st edition with 60 colour printed plates. In original cloth binding with blind stamped decoration and a gilt picture of a plant on the front board, and gilt decoration and titles to the spine. With original endpapers. The book consists of descriptions of each of the plants, with a black and white illustration and a colour plate showing the leaf. All the plates are tissue guarded and are bright and clean. The cloth binding is sunned with wear to top and bottom of spine and bumping to corners. There is a dedication to Mary Auckland, Dec 24, 1863 to the rear of the fep. The strong colour printing has caused off-setting - which is mostly onto the tissue guards. There is a light brown mark to the outside edge margin which appears at page 105 and marks the edges of the plates from 52 onwards. This does not affect the plant image and does not affect the text. Plate 56 has a vertical fold.

MORLEY, Henry. [1822-1894]
London, Chapman and Hall, 1861. First Edition. This copy is inscribed by Mr.Morley on the half title. Bound in publisher's embossed purple cloth faded to spine, titled and decorated in gilt to spine and front board. Light bumping and wear to extremities, fraying to head of spine and a small hole in the cloth midway down the spine panel. Pencil ownership to front flyleaf. Essentially a strong, solid copy of a charming little book of Victorian fairy tales, many of which lean strongly towards the surreal; including a particularly mental example where great attention is paid to decoding the message written on the back of a very talkative mackerel. Morley seems to have been responsible for dispensing potted education to every literate occupant of Victorian England. He was responsible for Morley's Universal Library, Cassell's National Library, and was the long time editor of Charles Dickens' Household Words to boot. He is said to have edited and written over three hundred volumes during the course of his distinguished career. We can only suppose that he knocked off this little collection of Carroll-esque bits and pieces in the quiet part of an afternoon when he wasn't learning the violin and translating Tacitus.

BOSCHKE, Albert
D. McClelland, Blanchard & Mohun,, Washington, D.C., 1861 - The first detailed survey of D.C. and her environs Engraved map, 2 sheets joined (some minor repairs to margins). Albert Boschke (1823-1910) was a Polish-born civil engineer who worked for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in Washington, DC, from the mid 1850s onwards. It was whilst working there that he conceived the idea of making a highly accurate map of Washington and of the District of Columbia, with the hope of selling it to the Government as well as privately. He organized and employed a group of surveyors to do the fieldwork at his own expense. His grand project would eventually cost him his job. Two maps appeared from his labours, a large four sheet map of the city in 1857 and another large map of the whole District in 1861, (the present example). The map is amazingly detailed. Drawn on a scale of four inches to a mile, it was by far the most accurate map of Washington yet produced. It documented the location of all buildings, both private and public. Each structure was drawn from actual tape-line measurements that had been made in the field. The roads were measured by two parties, one with transit and chain, the other with a level. On the outskirts of the city roads, rivers, creeks, farm and wooded lands along with property lines with owners names are given; as well as contour lines. The map was drawn and engraved in the style of the charts issued by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. This map "was engraved upon copper by Mr. David McClelland, and was just about to be published—indeed, a few copies … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Engaged to the young king of Bactria, Lalla Rookh goes forth to meet him, but falls in love with Feramorz, a poet from her entourage. The bulk of the work consists of four interpolated tales sung by the poet: The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan (loosely based upon the story of Al-Muqanna), Paradise and the Peri, The Fire-Worshippers, and The Light of the Harem. When Lalla Rookh enters the palace of her bridegroom she swoons away, but revives at the sound of a familiar voice. She awakes with rapture to find that the poet she loves is none other than the prince to whom she is engaged.
