Thomas F. Rowland and Colonel William Borden
Greenpoint (Brooklyn), New York, 1861. Very good. This 3-page letter and endorsement measure approximately 8" x 9". It was apparently delivered by courier between Rowland's Continental Iron Works and the Providence Tool and Armory Company, which employed both Borden and Andrews, as there are no postal markings. The letter has two horizontal folds and the cover is docketed, "W. Borden Order. - Oct. 22d/61." It is in nice shape with some small splits beginning at the folds. The Brooklyn shipyard, especially Rowland's Continental Iron Works, was an especially bustling place when this order was placed. The U.S. Navy had recently learned that the Confederacy was soon to launch the CSS Virginia (better known as the Merrimac) and had contracted for the rapid construction of three ironclad prototypes with three different firms.Maxon, Fish and Company began what was to become the USS Galena, Merrick & Sons designed what would become the USS New Ironsides, and Battery Associates led the conglomerate that would build the USS Monitor.Rowland's firm was subcontracted to build the Monitor's hull at the Geenpoint shipyard and apparently elements of the other two vessels as well. In this document, Borden urgently forwards Rowland's order to Andrews to fabricate fittings for carriages to hold eight 8" guns and ten pivot or slide carriages for Parrot guns. In Rowland's order to Borden, he includes a sketch and detailed specification of the fittings for the 8" gun carriages. The archivist at the Mariners' Museum, the official repository of the Monitor Collection believes these parts we … [Click Below for Full Description]

Confederate States of America
[Montgomery]: n.p., 1861. First edition. Broadside. A very good copy, fold in center with several inch tears at crease, and Rebel Archives, War Department stamp on verso .. 1 sheet. Though the Confederate States issued a few special acts concerning prisoners of war (such as authorizing close confinement of officers in Richmond and Charleston as hostages for privateers, one declaring that the officers in Pope's command were also to be treated as criminals, or that the men in Butler's command were not to be treated as prisoners of war, and of course the act regarding Negro troops) there was only one piece of general legislation concerning prisoners during the whole period of the war: this Act, which was approved on May 21, 1861. Provenance: Rebel Archives, War Department. Parrish & Willingham 59. Crandall 43.

Paris: Choudens, [1861]. 4to. [iv], 248 pp., lithographed piano-vocal score. Contemporary rebacked quarter black morocco, black cloth boards paneled in blind, backstrip lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled endpapers. Opera in five acts, libretto by J. Barbier and M. Carre, first performed (as an opera comique with spoken dialogue) on 19 March 1859 at the Theatre-Lyrique, Paris. The recitatives were added for a production at Strasbourg in April 1860, and a piano score of the opera version was published that year. The present score, published (according to Hopkinson) in 1861, has added tempo markings and shows a cut from the Choeur de sorcieres in Act V. The libretto by Barbier and Carre is based on Goethe, but focuses on the love story between Faust and Marguerite. Loewenberg, 939.
