[Click Below for Full Description]

Gurowski, Adam
Washington: , 1 December [no year]. Washington, 1 December [no year]. Two pages, in ink, on two conjugate quarto sheets of ruled paper. With a number of deletions and insertions. Old folds from mailing, small marginal nick, very good. To W.T. Robinson, who was apparently assisting Gurowski in some capacity with the publication of his writings. Gurowski begins by saying he is "... certain the book will be better as you anticipate [and] ... that your kind cooperation will not hurt it ...", and then clarifies his intention in the manuscript, explaining: "... where I mentioned the battles of Ligny & Waterloo my meaning is Thiers (the historian) says that etc. the correction made in the proof sheet points that I was misunderstood. I restored in the proof-sheet the name of Thiers, & these lines are to explain the meaning." Gurowski is not pleased with "the Commonwealth ... containing the advertisement ... The title is not such as I wish" and writes out his preferred version ("Diary / from March 4th 1861 to Nov 12 1862 / by / Adam Gurowski") which he hopes can be inserted "provided it is not too late." In the concluding paragraphs, Gurowski provides further instructions arising from the translation of his book from manuscript into proof-sheets. Count Adam Gurowski (1805- 1866); Polish-born American author. In 1825 in Warsaw "... he became identified with those opposed to Russian influence, and was in consequence several times imprisoned. He was active in organizing the November Uprising of 1830, in which he afterward took part. On its suppression, Adam lost the greater part of hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Simonides, Constantine
Trübner & Co., London, 1861. Folio. (15 1/2 x 11 3/4"). 79, [1]pp (Text) XIV (14, i.e 15) leaves of plates. Uncut. Modern brown cloth, with gold lettering to spine. Title page in red and black lettering, with vignette. This scarce book is the work of Constantine Simonides (1824-1867), undoubtly one of the greatest forgers of the 19th century, a "genius" who mastered the styles of writing, the colors of inks and paints of different times, as well as the different kinds of parchments used. In this book, Simonides claims to have "discovered" a papyrus in Liverpool which he presents as the original copy of St. Matthew's Gospel! The manuscript (known as Codex Mayerianus) is reproduced in facsimile. As soon as this book was published, a controversy arised on the authenticity of the document. Simonides offered to bring the manuscript to the British Museum, and to answer any questions. After close examination, most of the experts present agreed that the document was a fake.Ex-library copy, with sticker at tail of spine, bookplate on inside of front cover, and pocket and reference number on inside of back board. Lacking the engraved frontispiece portrait of Matthew, by Day & Son, lithographers to the Queen. Minor to moderate age-toning and foxing to title and dedication page. HAIGH, Edward (active Melbourne, 1861-62)
Stereoscopic albumen print photograph, each individual image approximately 82 x 73 mm, mount 83 x 165 mm, versowith original printed paper label of the photographer Edward Haigh; the stereoscopic prints and the mounts are in fine condition. The English photographer Edward Haigh, who had studied with the Crimean War photographer Roger Fenton, arrived in Melbourne in January 1861. He opened a studio in South Yarra and spent over a year in the colony. Haigh specialised in stereoscopic photography and his views of Victoria, England and France won a first-class award at the 1861 Melbourne Exhibition. He returned to London in 1862, where his stereoviews of Melbourne and Victoria won a medal at the London International Exhibition that year. Geelong's Market Square occupied 8 acres in the centre of the township, on land that had been selected for this purpose by Governor Gipps. The distinctive clock tower, named the Austin Clock Tower after the Mayor of Geelong, James Austin, who had financed it, was completed on the site in 1856. It was a prefabricated construction, and featured a gilded weather vane in the form of a kangaroo. A much loved Geelong landmark for almost 70 years, the tower was scandalously demolished in 1923 to make way for the CML Building. Edward Haigh's very early view of the Geelong Market Square appears unrecorded.

HANKINS, MARIE LOUISE
New York: Published at the Office of Marie Louise Hankins' Pictorial Family Newspaper, 1861, 1861. First edition. Wright II, 1092; Sabin 30228; Hamilton, Early American Book Illustrators, 1696. Cloth well worn; lacking the rear free endpaper; a decent copy.. 8vo, original blind-stamped red cloth, gilt decorations and lettering. Two frontispieces and 32 plates, all printed on pale green paper. Although now relegated to obscurity (she is not recorded in any standard biographical dictionary - in book form or online), Mary Louise Hankins was apparently a formidable one-woman band in her day: she published and edited her own newspaper; she was the author, illustrator, and publisher of numerous books; and she was a tireless self-promoter. This narrative consists of thirty-three sketches of contemporary women, including "Rhoda Alwyn: The Perjured Bride," "Angelina Plump: The Lap-Dog's Mother," "Miss Biddy McKay: The Female Vagrant," "Lillie Bell: The Female Writer," etc., all of whom Hankins maintains are drawn from real life. The illustrations are clumsy but have the zest one would expect from Ms. Hankins. The final four pages include advertisements for her newspaper and other publications and want-ads for female canvassers to sell them.

Lucy, Armand.
Marseille, Jules Barile, 1861. - 8vo. 204 pp. With 2 lithographed maps, a lithographed folding plate, 6 wood engraved plates, and 5 wood engravings in text.Contemporary half, tanned sheepskin, marbled edges. First edition, in the original French, of a work on the Second Opium War during the years 1856-1860. The author, Armand Lucy, came to China in 1860, probably at the age of 23, as the interpreter to the French general Charles Cousin-Montauban (1796-1878). As an eyewitness, Lucy writes lively about the campaign in letters to his father, who published the letters he received in 1861. The book covers almost a year, starting in Ceylon in April 1860. Lucy gives a detailed account of several battles, with information about the strategies and the casualties. It also includes an account of the looting of the Summer Palace and of the Battle of Palikao, when the English and French took over Beijing, which played an important part in eventually defeating the Qing Empire. The text is illustrated with wood engraved views of Beijing. - Rare. Some foxing throughout the book. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities. Overal a good copy. Cordier (Sinica) 2494f. Turner, J. W.
Boston: Oliver Ditson, 1861. First Edition. Sheet Music. Very Good. Four pages plus cover. Portrait illustration of Baker on the front cover. Once bound so slightly trimmed with a rough left edge. Light wear and soiling; small closed tear at the lower margin. Edward Dickinson Baker was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln and a Senator from Oregon. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, Baker accepted a commission as a Colonel in the Union Army (without resigning his Senate seat) and commanded a regiment in Brigadier General Charles P. Stone's Corps of Observation. In one of the first engagements of the war, the Battle of Ball's Bluff, near Leesburg Virginia, Baker was killed by a volley of Confederate fire when he was struck at least four times in the chest and head. Baker is the only serving U.S. Senator to have ever been killed in combat.

Pearson, John J.]
[Harrisburg?, 1861. Elephant folio broadside, 9.5" x 24". Printed in three columns using different typesettings, surrounded by ornamental border. Old folds [splits along fold edges affecting occasional letters, a few old tape repairs on verso], small hole affecting a couple of letters, a few crimps. Tanned, several pencil underlines. Good copy of an unrecorded, and perhaps unique, document. Judge Pearson was appointed to the Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, bench in 1849. After Pennsylvania opted to elect judges, he was returned without opposition in 1851, 1861, and 1871. A popular man, he "had a deep rooted interest in the county" [Judge Homer L. Kreider, 'History of Dauphin County Courts. An Address Before the Historical Society of Dauphin County. January 21, 1952']. This lengthy Charge discusses the Nation's "fearful, bloody, and as we apprehend, protracted war, forced upon it without cause or reason by the so called Confederate States. It is the bounden duty of the Federal government to use every possible exertion, and strain every nerve, to suppress the rebellion, restore the Union, and re-establish the Constitution over the whole United States, and it is equally the duty of every citizen to contribute toward the support of a beneficent paternal and most indulgent government, in every way that his circumstances will permit..." Judge Pearson warns against "traitorous correspondence with enemies of the United States, or of this State," and denounces the "secret orders in our State, having for their object the subversion of the Government, in whole or in part." … [Click Below for Full Description]
