This 1861 edition includes Washington’s Farewell Address, in addition to the other famous American documents, and predates many of the famous Constitutional amendments, such as the famous 13th Amendment on slavery. Herzen, A. (1812-1879), pseud. Iskander
Vol'naia Russkaia Tipografiia, London, 1861. Octavo (19 × 12.5 cm). Contemporary half-leather binding with gilt-tooled red leather spine label; original wrappers not preserved; XII, 413, III pp. A very good copy, with wide uncut margins in an attractive contemporary binding and with an important provenance. First part of the first edition of Alexander Herzen's most important work, the memoirs published during his exile in England. A key member of the Moscow Hegelian group of "Westernizers" around the critics and philosophers Vissarion Belinsky, Mikhail Bakunin, and Timofei Granovskii, Herzen left Russia in 1846 and lived in Berlin, Brussels, Paris (where he experienced the Revolution of 1848), Geneva and London. To help the political goals of the Russian emigration, Herzen founded the "Free Russian Press" ("Vol'naia Russkaia Tipografiia") in London in 1853, which published books and journals without preliminary censorship, and issued two famous periodicals, "The Polar Star" (Poliarnaia zvezda) and "Kolokol" ("Die Glocke"). He died in Geneva in 1870. This copy from the famous collection of Socialistica of the Marxist bibliophile and scholar Chimen Abramsky (1916-2010), who fled to London from the Soviet Union in the early 1930s and became a leading specialist in both Judaica and socialist thought. His collection, parts of which were auctioned after his death, has recently been commemorated in his son's biography, The House of Twenty Thousand Books (2014). Hall, Daniel Weston
Boston, 1861. 171pp. plus [4]pp. of advertisements. Frontispiece portrait. 12mo. Original brown publisher's cloth, stamped in blind, expertly rebacked retaining portion of original spine. Light foxing and soiling. About very good. A scarce account of a teenager's adventures at sea, including Pacific whaling experiences and visits to Hawaii and Siberia. During a three- month stay in Honolulu, Hall witnessed a volcanic eruption and planned his escape from the cruel captain of the whale ship Condor. After some whaling adventures in the Pacific, Hall deserted ship along the coast of Siberia, near the bank of the Oudskoi River. He was eventually rescued as a result of his father's efforts back home in New Bedford. One of the reasons Hall published this work was to call the public's attention to the severe punishments suffered by seamen, especially in the whaling fleet, and to encourage the reform of discipline at sea. Includes a chapter entitled "Peep at the Whale Fisheries." Not in Hill nor, apparently, ARCTIC BIBLIOGRAPHY. SABIN 29745. FORSTER 469. FORBES 2422.

[Civil War]
[Philadelphia?]: E. Stauch, 1861. Uncolored lithograph, 12x 15 1/2 inches. Small marginal tears repaired by tape, not affecting image; uniformly tanned. About very good. Matted. A cutting political print, criticizing British assistance to the Confederate cause in the early days of the Civil War. The importance of southern cotton to the British economy caused many to fear that England would recognize the independence of the Confederacy, or offer material support to the rebels. Issued a year before United States-British relations would become strained over the controversy surrounding the British construction of rebel war ships, this print displays the northern anxiety over any material advantage that the British might give the Confederacy. The print shows "Uncle Sam," in the guise of Abraham Lincoln in a Union uniform, grabbing "John Bull" (Great Britain) by the scruff of the neck as he tries to escape over a fence. John Bull holds a handful of cotton plants in his hand, and other plants are seen in the right side of the image. The artist has camouflaged several black faces in his renderings of cotton plants. The Englishman's lower legs are made of "Armstrong's patent" cannons, referring to a type of English-made gun used by the Confederates. Uncle Sam tells him, "John, you lost your non-interfering principle, I'll lay it on your back again." In his right hand the American holds a large stick reading: "Principle of Non-Enterference." A rooster with the head of the French leader, Napoleon III, straddles the fence (French neutrality seeming tentatively secured). A sca … [Click Below for Full Description]

BECHAMP (Antoine).
Montpellier, Boehm et Fils, 1861. in-8. 1f. 37pp. Broché, dans sa couverture muette d'origine. Edition Originale. TILLEY, Henry Arthur.
London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1861 - Octavo. (219 × 132 mm) Contemporary scarlet calf, double gilt fillet panel to the boards, green morocco label to the spine which is gilt in compartments, all edges marbled. Some light foxing, endpapers and versos of the plates, very little show-through on the rectos, light shelf-wear, a very good copy. Tinted lithographic frontispiece and 7 other similar plates. First edition. A well-written and lively account of life in late-Tokugawa Japan with excellent descriptions of the early European establishments there. Tilley took the position of English tutor with the Russian squadron travelling out via Japan to their new settlements on the Amur river. He spent three months at Nicholaivsk, claiming to be the first Englishman to visit the Amur, and visited Siberia before returning via San Francisco, Hawaii, Tahiti, and South America, concluding with an account of Monte Video. An uncommon account, full of interesting insights. This copy in a handsome binding, having been presented to J. Poley by Archibald Weyland Ruggles Brise on his leaving Eton in 1867. Buckingham, William A.
J.R. Hawley & Co., State Printers, Hartford, 1861. 18 pp. 8vo. William A. Buckingham (1804-1875) won the election as governor in 1860, narrowly defeating Thomas Seymour. "The New Haven Register" expressed the concern of the Republicans and abolitionists when it declared "A nation is waiting in almost breathless suspense to hear the results" since the Democrats declared a vote for Buckingham was a vote for abolition and thus the loss of Southern business. This address to the Connecticut legislature was just a few weeks after the commencement of the war. "The condition of our country is critical. Seven thousand men in arms backed by nineteen batteries of artillery, have, in open day, with disloyal heart and traitorous hands, struck at the national flag in the harbor of Charleston. The sceptre of authority must be upheld, and allegiance secured. It is no time to make concession to rebels, or parley with men in arms. indifferent or disloyal we cannot be. Fail or falter we shall not." Thereafter follows his recommendations for military support and preparations which would be passed by the legislature. Uncommon. OCLC locates ten copies at eight institutions. Not in Sabin. Samuel J. May Anti-Slavery Collection. Lacking the wrappers on some issues else very good, scattered foxing, tear and small chip to lower margin of last leaf. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
