SUEZ CANAL - BUQUET, Alexandre and Charles AVRIL.
[Paris, Bureaux de l'Isthme de Suez, Journal de l'Union des Deux Mers], 1861 Lithographic map (83 x 57 cm) in black, blue green and sepia, dissected into 21 segments, linen-backed and folding; linen along folds a bit brittle, light spoting and toning; route of the Suez Canal with altitude above sea level [?] marked in red ink; contemporary stamp Broquier Godefroy under title. This rare map was most likely used by a French engineer or surveyor, whilst the Suez Canal was under construction (1859-1869). Alternative routes are marked in crayon and pencil. The map was linen backed for use in Egypt. Unfortunately the imprint in the lower margin is covered by the linen-backing.

[South Australia]. BARTHOLOMEW, John:
London, George Philip, [late 1861]. A full-colour map, printed surface 610 x 510 mm, cut into 20 panels mounted on linen (as issued), folded, and mounted in the publisher's gilt-decorated cloth case (external dimensions 190 x 118 mm). Slight wear to the corners of the case, with minimal restoration to the spine; light erasures to the pastedown and paper-lined verso of the exposed panel of the folded map; the map is lightly marked in one spot, but is essentially in fine condition. There are two interesting rubber-stamps on one cloth panel, that of 'W.C. Rigby, Newsagent, Adelaide' and 'Archiv. Provinciae Austriae S. J.'; the erasures mentioned above appear to have removed a couple of examples of the Jesuit Archive stamp. Philips' Authentic Maps of the Australian Colonies, Number 6 (according to the information printed on the front pastedown). Tooley 974 (basic details of the map only, not noting the Travelling Maps series). Pertinent details printed on the map that provide evidence of the date of publication include 'Burke & Wills 1860-61', and the locations where King, and the bodies of Gray, Burke and Wills, were found (King was found in September 1861). The latest reference to Stuart is 'Stuart's Route 1860' (presumably his fifth expedition, from November 1860 to September 1861). The entire region of South Australia west of about 133 degrees east longitude and north of the coastline is described as 'Unexplored Country added to South Australia in 1861'; the Act to annex this land was passed in Great Britain in August 1861. Marie Louise Hankins & Co., New York 1861 - 354 pages, with double frontispiece, 34 plates and some in-text illustrations, [pages 350-4 are ads]. Orange cloth stamped in gilt. All edges gilded. Publisher's original yellow endpapers. Most of gilt gone from spine; light soiling to cloth; occasional unobtrusive spotting within. Binding sound and hinges secure. A very good example. Pagination jumps from 332 to 337 but nothing is lacking. ELIOT, George, [pseudonym of Mary Ann EVANS] (1819-1880).
Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1861.. FIRST EDITION. Crown octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[iv], adverts; [ii], coated endpaper leaf, [vi]; 364; [xvi], advertisements. Elegantly rebound in the early twentieth century in dark green half crushed morocco, full gilt backs, moire silk-covered sides, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, original yellow endpaper and russet cloth covers bound in. Internally very clean. Binding nicely aged to brown on spine, some wear to top corners. This copy with half-title and the scarce 4-page advert for the 'autobiography' bound in at front, plus regular 16-page catalogue at rear A vintage receipt for the sale of this book is loosely inserted. Mary Ann Evans began her literary career as a translator and later editor of the Westminster Review. In 1857, she published 'Scenes of Clerical Life', the first of eight novels she would write under the name of 'George Eliot' including the important 'Middlemarch', and the popular 'Silas Marner', which was the author's own favourite. The novel centres on Silas Marner, the linen weaver of Raveloe, a village on the brink of industrialization. George Eliot's affectionate but unsentimental portrait of rural life combines irony, humour and sharp social comment. Above all, she demonstrates a profound and enduring knowledge of the human mind and heart.
