1861. An important Publication in the field of Natural Science. This particular example contains three volumes of pictorial atlas' which beautifully depict the hand-colored renderings of many manner of life forms. The condition of these engravings is excellent. Atlas II, however, has significant deterioration of the front hing joint to the main body/spine, but the prints within are all very well held together within, and the back cover joint is good. The volumes of text show significant foxing etc. on some, but not all, of the pages. Volumes II, III, VII, and XIII and Atlas II were published in 1861. There are instances of chipped board (minor) and insignificant shelf wear. Nevertheless, the overall physical condition is very good. I would be willing to sell the Three Volume Atlas on its own for $3,200.

[Texas]. [Newspapers]
Tyler, Tx, 1861. Very good.. [2]pp. Folio. Old fold lines, faint embossed seal. Light wear and soiling. A manuscript legal agreement to sell the press of a short-lived and unrecorded newspaper in Tyler, Texas. The initial publication of the States Rights Sentinel was announced in a Clarksville newspaper in May 1860, with the stated goal of advocating "a strict construction of the 'Constitution,' accepting as a final basis for the adjustment of the Slavery Question, the principles embodied in the 'Dred Scott' decision." The start of the Civil War and the secession of Texas rendered the editorial stance of the paper moot, and it apparently folded some time during the late spring of 1861, this document being dated June 1. No copies of the newspaper are located by the Library of Congress, the American Antiquarian Society, or OCLC. The owner and editor, William H. Smith, joined the Confederate army after the sale, and was killed in action soon thereafter. The document states, in part: "Know all men by these presents that I, William H. Smith of the county and state aforesaid, for and in consideration of Thirteen Hundred Fifty Nine dollars and Forty cents, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained sold and conveyed unto A.S. Smith of the same county a Printing Press in the town of Tyler, belonging to the 'States Rights Sentinel,' a newspaper published in the town of Tyler, and all the material belonging to said newspaper and press." The agreement was witnessed and stamped by the Smith County Clerk in Tyler on September 23. A fascinating document … [Click Below for Full Description]

Provenance: Walther Pfeilsticker (owner's name dated 1911 on front free endpaper); Logan Clendening (bookplate to rear pastedown); W. Bruce Fye. Few copies of this work have survived and ours is notable for being in excellent condition. ---- FIRST EDITION. "One of the epoch-making books in medical literature" (Garrison-Morton). This very rare volume summarizes Semmelweis's classic observations on the etiology, contagiousness and prevention of puerperal fever. In the late 1840s, while serving as assistant professor in the maternity department of Vienna General Hospital, Semmelweis had demonstrated that puerperal, or childbed, fever was a septicemia and strove to improve hygienic conditions in the city's obstetrics wards. Completely unaware of the contributions of Oliver Wendell Holmes in this same field, Semmelweis prescribed the washing of the doctor's hands in a calcium chloride solution before attending a childbirth. The result was that infant mortality was reduced by five-sixths. Nevertheless, Semmelweis faced enormous opposition and even ridicule from colleagues and when his hospital position was not renewed, he was forced to move from Vienna to Budapest in 1850. In 1855 he wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philadelphia: Published by Job T. Williams, (1861). 1st appearance. Single sheet, printed recto only, in four colors. Lithograph (not including text): 21-1/4" x 33-3/8". Sheet: 24-1/4" x 35-3/8". Printed on sturdy paper, and now in a modern matte board frame. Recently de-acidified and backed with Japanese tissue; some minor staining lightened; blind-stamp of the publisher at bottom right. Colors vibrant, overall, VG+. Item #45866 The lithographer, Thomas S. Sinclair, was a Scotsmen who learned his craft in Edinburgh, and on coming to the States, was one of the earliest color lithographers to practice in the country. He is known to have published one other Queen hand-colored lithograph of the Refreshment Saloons, ca 1861 (cf. Peters, America on Stone, p. 368). We have located three other copies of this image: one each in the Otis Archives at the National Museum of Medicine and Health; the Library Company; and the Pennsylvania Historical Society. The Library of Congress owns the second Queen lithograph. The Volunteer Saloons grew into the Sanitary Commission, the precursor of the American Red Cross. At this point, the civilian members were catering to the needs of the healthy new recruits.

The Peace Conference of 1861 was a meeting of 131 leading American politicians in February 1861, at the Willard's Hotel in Washington, DC, on the eve of the American Civil War. The success of President Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party in the 1860 presidential elections led to a flurry of political activity. In much of the South, elections were held to select delegates to special conventions to consider secession from the Union. In Congress, efforts were made in both the House of Representatives and the Senate to reach compromise over the issues relating to slavery that were dividing the nation. The conference was the final effort by the individual states to resolve the crisis. With the seven states of the Cotton South already committed to secession, the emphasis to preserve the Union peacefully focused on the eight slaveholding states representing the Upper and Border South, with the states of Virginia and Kentucky playing key roles This is a great addition for any collector.Scarce. A very good copy, small, faint stain on left margin, minor edge wear with a few tiny tears, colors vibrant. Reilly, American Political Prints: 1861-13. Item #39098 A large, patriotic, and symbolic print issued around the time of Abraham Lincoln's first inauguration containing a central allegorical scene surrounded by oval portraits of the first sixteen presidents of the United States, with George Washington at the top and a beardless Abraham Lincoln at the bottom which may explain why, though now a considered one of the most beautiful prints of the images of American Presidents, it did not sell, as the new president was sporting a beard, and not clean-shaven as he was when Matthew Brady took this image on February 27, 1860, the day of his speech at Cooper Union in New York. The print "both commemorates Lincoln's election and recognizes the challenges and opportunities facing the 16th president... The 16 presidential portraits encircle symbols of the republic at a time when a divided nation faced secession and civil war. Here we have a very rare & neat book titled Reports of Explorations and Surveys, to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean made under the direction of the secretary of war in 1853 - 1856 according to acts of congress March 3 1853 May 31st 1854 & Aug 5th 1854 Volume XI. It was published in Washington & printed be George W. Bowman in 1861. This volume contains maps, profiles & plates from various explorations that were undertaken prior to the decision & planning of the transcontinental railroad. It is a neat archival piece that unfortunately is in very poor condition. There is no cover, it has creases , foxing , tears , dirt, one map is detached & it may be missing a few pages . That being said it is a joy to read & has lots of maps & plates to examine. The maps & some of the plates fold out to larger sizes. The book itself when closed, measures about 12" x 9" x 3" . The book includes: 4 engraved map plates 8 single page litho view plates 5 folding litho view plates 20 folding maps 9 folding profiles 2 folding maps with profiles. [Attributes: First Edition]
