Parisiis, in Imperiali Typographeo excudebatur, 1861-1865. 3 volumes. Folio (355 x 260mm.). pp. xxviii, 242, with 2 vignettes and 5 engraved plates; pp. xix, (1), 319, with 2 vignettes and 34 engraved plates; pp. xvi, 221, with 2 vignettes and 22 engraved plates. Recent brown half morocco, gilt ornamented and lettered spines in 6 compartments. First and only edition of one of the rarest and most beautifully illustrated works on mycology. Louis René Tulasne and his brother Charles cooperated in a life-long study of botany. Charles was an artist of unusual dexterity, and he made the illustations of the above work. They represent the finest on the subject and have never been excelled, and are almost of a surrealistic nature. "Their magnum opus was the 'Selecta Fungorum Carpologia' in three magnificent quarto volumes published in 1861-1865, in which they demonstrated the pleomorphism of ascomycetes which had been denied by some contemporary mycologists. They depicted for the first time the conidia, perithecia, and asci of many important parasitic ascomycetes" (Reed. A short history of Plant Sciences p. 272). An English edition was published in 1931. A beautifully bound and fine copy from the libarary of Nils Fries with his bookplate. The present copy was sold to him by our company in 1975 and Prof. Fries had it attractively bound. Volumes 2 and 3 have the original printed wrappers bound in. Old library stamp on half titles.//Nissen BBI, 2010; Stafleu & Cowan, 15.315.

Brazil pittoresco.

Lemercier 1861 - FROND, Victor & RIBEYROLLES, Charles.  Brazil pittoresco. Paris, Lemercier, 1861. "This album of magnificent engravings is an excellent iconographic document and is very rare" (Borba de Moraes). Borba de Moraes, II, 737 ; Garraux, 256 ; Sabin, 70809. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In 1868 he published his monumental Recherches sur le spectre solaire, which contained an atlas of the solar spectrum with measurements of the wavelenghts of approximately a thousand lines determined by the use of diffraction gratings.       London W. Kent & Co 1861 - First edition thus. Frontispiece engraving, engraved title, and over 50 other engravings by Birket Foster, Harrison Weir, S. Edmonston and other famous artists of the period. 4to, publisher’s beautiful original Victorian red cloth, lettered and elaborately decorated in all-over designs in gilt on the spine and on both covers, a.e.g. xvi, 272 pp. In very fine and exemplary condition, the gilt and cloth are undiminished by time, the pages clean and fresh, just a touch of light aging to the extremities. A BEAUTIFUL VICTORIAN DECORATED BINDING WITH WONDERFUL TEXT AND ILLUSTRATIONS THROUGHOUT and a very desirable copy of the "Poems and Songs", complete with charming illustrations throughout. The large format and clear type make this copy a pleasure to read. Burns, a ploughman poet, to this day ranks high among the greatest poets of Great Britain. Whether employing his flawless 18th century English or his native Scots dialect, his writings speak to us eloquently . "His finest work springs from his own soil, from his compassionate and generous nature, and from the Scots’ poetic tradition. He employed the Scottish vernacular with great skill and range.he was in direct contact with its source and the themes of Scots rural life provided an inexhaustible field for poetic expression."-Michael Stapleton. Burns’ most famous collection was a tremendous success and was reprinted many times during his lifetime. Just prior to its first publication in 1786 he was preparing to leave Scotland for Jamaica to escape several scandalous affairs involving a number of young ladies. With the money from the publishing of his Poems, he was able to remain in Scotland and build a new (though perhaps none the more chaste) life in Edinburgh. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Paris, Poulet-Malassis, 1861 - BARBEY D'AUREVILLY, Jules. G.S. Trebutien [Préface par J.-Cl. Polet ] 1985. pp. 3-198.). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Archive of approximately 40 items between 1861 and 1905 from the Isham Family of Michigan including a Civil War Battle Field Letter and a Letter acknowledging Post-War Morphine Addiction

Onondaga, Michigan and Other Michigan Locations, 1861. Mixed. Highlights of this grouping of family documents and letters include: 1) a two-page Civil War letter dated 9 June 1861 from Elizabeth's cousin, James Ellis, following the Battle of Fair Oaks-Seven Pines that notes, "my redgment had A Batel las Saterday nighat and it lost 100 killed and wount My company had 14 killed and wound I am with in 6 miles of richmnd". 2) a draft application for Civil War disability pay for Elizabeth's husband, George W., who had served in the 7th Michigan Infantry from 1861 until receiving a disability discharge in 1863. (The application is taped on the folds and somewhat incomprehensible as it appears to include part of a poem.) There is also a segment of an incomplete application for George to be placed on the Invalid Pension Roll of the United States. 3) a two-page letter dated 24 November 1894 to Elizabeth (who apparently was away from home) from George that pleads, "I am out of money and all most out of morphine and if you don't hurry home with some money I will have to go without then I expect to die." (Although the extent of morphine and opium addiction among Civil War Veterans-known as 'the Soldiers' Disease-is a controversial point among historians, no doubt battlefield surgical treatments and subsequent pain relief left many with a life-long dependence on painkillers.) 4) The Isham's 1864 marriage license and photographs of two boys in what appear to be military school uniforms; the Isham's had male children so it is likely these photographs are of their sons. 5) A transportation of Corpse permit from 1902 to move George's remains from Ypsilanti, Michigan to Jackson, Michigan and a draft contract with the Hills' Granite Works of Jackson to create a monument for George's gravesite that would include a G.A.R. Badge and his Civil War unit, "Co. B. 7th Mich. Infantry."
