POEMS AND SONGS BY ROBERT BURNS.

London W. Kent & Co 1861 - First edition thus. Frontispiece engraving, engraved title, and over 50 other engravings by Birket Foster, Harrison Weir, S. Edmonston and other famous artists of the period. 4to, publisher’s beautiful original Victorian red cloth, lettered and elaborately decorated in all-over designs in gilt on the spine and on both covers, a.e.g. xvi, 272 pp. In very fine and exemplary condition, the gilt and cloth are undiminished by time, the pages clean and fresh, just a touch of light aging to the extremities. A BEAUTIFUL VICTORIAN DECORATED BINDING WITH WONDERFUL TEXT AND ILLUSTRATIONS THROUGHOUT and a very desirable copy of the "Poems and Songs", complete with charming illustrations throughout. The large format and clear type make this copy a pleasure to read. Burns, a ploughman poet, to this day ranks high among the greatest poets of Great Britain. Whether employing his flawless 18th century English or his native Scots dialect, his writings speak to us eloquently . "His finest work springs from his own soil, from his compassionate and generous nature, and from the Scots’ poetic tradition. He employed the Scottish vernacular with great skill and range.he was in direct contact with its source and the themes of Scots rural life provided an inexhaustible field for poetic expression."-Michael Stapleton. Burns’ most famous collection was a tremendous success and was reprinted many times during his lifetime. Just prior to its first publication in 1786 he was preparing to leave Scotland for Jamaica to escape several scandalous affairs involving a number of young ladies. With the money from the publishing of his Poems, he was able to remain in Scotland and build a new (though perhaps none the more chaste) life in Edinburgh. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

DU DANDYSME ET DE G. BRUMMELL

Paris, Poulet-Malassis, 1861 - BARBEY D'AUREVILLY, Jules. G.S. Trebutien [Préface par J.-Cl. Polet ] 1985. pp. 3-198.). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Archive of approximately 40 items between 1861 and 1905 from the Isham Family of Michigan including a Civil War Battle Field Letter and a Letter acknowledging Post-War Morphine Addiction

Onondaga, Michigan and Other Michigan Locations, 1861. Mixed. Highlights of this grouping of family documents and letters include: 1) a two-page Civil War letter dated 9 June 1861 from Elizabeth's cousin, James Ellis, following the Battle of Fair Oaks-Seven Pines that notes, "my redgment had A Batel las Saterday nighat and it lost 100 killed and wount My company had 14 killed and wound I am with in 6 miles of richmnd". 2) a draft application for Civil War disability pay for Elizabeth's husband, George W., who had served in the 7th Michigan Infantry from 1861 until receiving a disability discharge in 1863. (The application is taped on the folds and somewhat incomprehensible as it appears to include part of a poem.) There is also a segment of an incomplete application for George to be placed on the Invalid Pension Roll of the United States. 3) a two-page letter dated 24 November 1894 to Elizabeth (who apparently was away from home) from George that pleads, "I am out of money and all most out of morphine and if you don't hurry home with some money I will have to go without then I expect to die." (Although the extent of morphine and opium addiction among Civil War Veterans-known as 'the Soldiers' Disease-is a controversial point among historians, no doubt battlefield surgical treatments and subsequent pain relief left many with a life-long dependence on painkillers.) 4) The Isham's 1864 marriage license and photographs of two boys in what appear to be military school uniforms; the Isham's had male children so it is likely these photographs are of their sons. 5) A transportation of Corpse permit from 1902 to move George's remains from Ypsilanti, Michigan to Jackson, Michigan and a draft contract with the Hills' Granite Works of Jackson to create a monument for George's gravesite that would include a G.A.R. Badge and his Civil War unit, "Co. B. 7th Mich. Infantry."

Historically important War-date Autographed Endorsement Signed

New York 1861 - General Fremont authorizes Major [Simon] Stevens to procure for him a gun shipment of 113 Cases of Rifles -- while they simultaneously participate in the "Hall Carbine Affair." This endorsement was written on the back of a two page handwritten letter from H. Livingstock & Co., Importers and Custom Agents, New York City, August 21, 1861, who notify Fremont, in part: ".Mr. Henry Steven's goes to France, and shall ship to you from there by the Steamer Brewer 113 Cases of Rifles, if not by this vessel he will do so by the next one from Southampton -- the goods to be consigned to Wells, Fargo & Co.In relation to the Rifles, it will be necessary to have an order from the Secretary of the Treasury, to land these free of duty if they are intended for the Government, we do not know how these Cases will be marked -- but the Department can order such are as for yourself to be landed free." Docketed by Gustavus Koerner: Will Major Stevens procure from Washington the necessary permit and find the things right forward - from - Headquarters -- Western Dept -- St. Louis -- August 27, 1861. Endorsed: J.C. Fremont -- Major Genl. Commanding. Note: at the very moment he authorized this gun purchase, Fremont and Stevens were participants involved in the "Hall Carbine Affair" whereby J.P. Morgan financed the purchase of 5000 surplus rifles at $3.50, which were resold back to the government for $22 each. Stevens was the broker who handled this transaction and Fremont was the purchaser! And there's an interesting twist to the story: though referred to as "Major Stevens," Simon Stevens never served in the military. He was appointed to this post on Fremont's staff as a Civilian Forwarding Agent in New York, looking after the Generals' purchases in Europe and the East. Weakness and small tears at the folds; two corners chipped. Very good(-) condition. American military officer, explorer, and first candidate of the Republican Party for the office of President of the United States. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Traces of his tours can be found in many contemporary periodicals, which oftenly contain small ads or reviews and recommendations by visitors. Two of such reviews of his cabinet we also find in the lower part of this wall bill, all praising the exhibition as being of high value for any scholar of natural history and biological sciences in general (one dated march, 1862). The museum contained waxworks, models, preparats and natural specimen, but no living animals as was oftenly still the case with travelling cabinets or museums a decade earlier. But the distinction of whether an item was a preparat or natural specimen (‘NaturgegenstandÂ’), or whether it was an artificial model or sculpture worked from materials like wax (‘KunstgegenstandÂ’), had little importance for him. It does not in all cases come clear from the description, what kind of the items were. Reading only the text of the bill one could have the impression, that his exhibition would mostly roamed waxworks, but contemporary reviews of the exhibition also mention a great variety of entomological, ornithological, and conchological specimens, all those not mentioned in the bill. The reason may well be found in the rising popularity of waxwork museums at that time and especially in a general tendency of public curiosity towards the artificial and industrial in the course of the ‘Great ExpositionsÂ’ which had their international break trough with the first of its kind in London, 1851. A good example for this is the waxwork of an “anatomical venus” exhibited by Hartkopff. He claims, that this life-sized figure on the one hand is a perfect look-a-like of Pepita de Oliva, a famous Spanish dancer, but on the other, when turned around, her back would reveal the anatomy of the human nervous system with the spinal chord. When Hartkopff died in 1877 the collection appears to have been sold several times, making it travel the world for almost half a century: a newspaper from Scramento advertises the opening of the museum (probably as a part of another exhibition) in 1880, but it must have returned to Europe again, as we can find several advertisements for the museum in Scandinavia in the early years of the 20th century, the sectionsÂ’ descriptions still very similar to those published in our wall bill. The collection then dissappeared from the public for a while, but was rediscovered decades later, when it gave reason for a huge scandal that found its end first in 2013! More on that in the description of position 49 in this catalog, which advertises for a ‘Museée francaisÂ’, but actually is the Hartkopff museum, ammended by other collections.

        President Lincoln's Innaugural

1861. (CIVIL WAR). President LincolnÂ’s Inaugural: Opinions of the Press. IN: The New York Tribune, March 8, 1861. WITH: Eight subsequent issues from March 12 to May 3, 1861, reporting “The Evacuation of Fort Sumter,” “The Pro-Slavery Rebellion,” and “The War for the Union” New York: The New York Tribune, 1861. Nine issues. Tabloids on wove stock (16 by 21-1/2 inches). $2200.Original New York Tribune reports of events pursuant to the formal declaration of the Civil War, including reactions to LincolnÂ’s first inaugural address, the siege of Fort Sumter, LincolnÂ’s acknowledgment of a state of “insurrection,” and the blockade of Southern ports.“When Abraham Lincoln, a known opponent of slavery, was elected president, the South Carolina legislature perceived a threat. Calling a state convention, the delegates voted to remove the state of South Carolina from the Union. The secession of South Carolina was followed by the secession of six more states— Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas (and the threat of secession by four more: Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina). These eleven states eventually formed the Confederate States of America” (Joanne Freeman). In his inaugural address, President Lincoln had been generally conciliatory to the South, declaring that he had “no purposeÂ… to interfere with the institution of slavery.” But he went on to warn that “no state, on its own mere action, can get out of the Union.” If there were to be disagreements, they would be over secession, not slavery. When Lincoln sent additional supplies to Fort Sumter, South Carolina sensed a military build-up. On April 12, the Civil War began with shots fired on the fort, which eventually was surrendered to South Carolina. These nine issues of the Tribune document those early events. Some issues separated along folds. A significant historical record in fairly good condition.

1861 Telegram from D.S. Gregory Jr. Brigadier Inspector at West Point Military Academy Warning Major Henry of Southern Cadets Smuggling Arms

Jersey City, NJ, 1861. Single Sheet. Very Good. A dramatic moment in U.S. Army history, the Civil War's division of North and South at the Academy - the Brigadier excitedly writing of "...Forty odd Southern Cadets from West Point left here...with carpet bags supposed to contain small arms..."; dated May 7, 1861, sent from Jersey City. On the verso, Major Henry has drafted his reply in pencil; "Chief Ruggles will send upon arrival of boat a squad of officers and will make proper examination. All arms found on person or in carpet bags ... will be detained. Alex Henry Major." West Point was a nexus of North and South during the Civil War. General Beauregard was briefly the superintendent of the Academy, and left that post when Louisiana, his home state, left the Union. He was the first brigadier general in the Confederate States Army, and commanded the defenses of Charleston, South Carolina, at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Cadets were forced to take sides against fellow West Pointers, most notably Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. Printed form on letterhead of "The Magnetic Telegraph Company. Morse Line" , with addresses of the telegraphic offices and the terms and conditions of the messages sent below; message and addressees all written in a very legible hand in ink; approx. 5 1/2" x 8 1/4" size; old fold lines; light wear; in very good condition and revealing of the fears of the Union North as Southern defectors departed for home and the cause of the Confederacy, as well as being a significant reminder of the importance of the science of telegraphy and quick communication in the war between the States.

Education of the Children of Clothilde and Clovis - Alma-Tadema, 1861.

EDUCATION OF THE CHILDREN OF CLOTHILDE AND CLOVISStaalgravure vervaardigd door J.H.

Historically important War-date Autographed Endorsement Signed

New York, 1861. unbound. General Fremont authorizes Major [Simon] Stevens to procure for him a gun shipment of 113 Cases of Rifles -- while they simultaneously participate in the "Hall Carbine Affair." This endorsement was written on the back of a two page handwritten letter from H. Livingstock & Co., Importers and Custom Agents, New York City, August 21, 1861, who notify Fremont, in part: "...Mr. Henry Steven's goes to France, and shall ship to you from there by the Steamer Brewer 113 Cases of Rifles, if not by this vessel he will do so by the next one from Southampton -- the goods to be consigned to Wells, Fargo & Co...In relation to the Rifles, it will be necessary to have an order from the Secretary of the Treasury, to land these free of duty if they are intended for the Government, we do not know how these Cases will be marked -- but the Department can order such are as for yourself to be landed free..." Docketed by Gustavus Koerner: Will Major Stevens procure from Washington the necessary permit and find the things right forward - from - Headquarters -- Western Dept -- St.
