Gould, John.
c1860., London. Folio (14" x 21"), colored lithographed bird plate. A little faint scattered foxing, right edge just a little rough; overall bright and colorful. John Gould (1804-1881) was born in Dorset, and spent his early career years as a taxidermist. By the late 1820s he entered the publishing business, and privately published his first publication that included folio sized bird plates (A Century of Birds Hitherto Unfigured from the Himalaya Mountains). The work appeared in twenty monthly installments. This work launched a fifty year career that would pretty much use the same format for his future publications. This plate is probably plate number four from the Birds of Europe. ODB. Gould's Works on Natural History: Index.

Hans Rudolf Schinz
G. B. Griesbach's Verlag, Gera. We offer here an early edition of this magnificent work. The volume, which is undated (probably circa 1860 - 1880), contains 120 full-page, coloured plates of birds of the world, plus four further coloured plates of bird nests and two pages of black and white engravings showing the development of birds from eggs and 253 pages of text. The book is bound in original green cloth with elaborate decoration on spine and front cover in gilt and black; the volume has been skillfully re-cased in the original binding with new cream-coloured endpapers. Top and tail of spine are a little bumped and rubbed, as are the corners of the boards; the title-page is uniformly darkened and the first 38 pages of the text are moderately to heavily foxed; the rest of the text and the illustrations are bright and clean. Overall the volume is in very nice condition for its age and the original binding is very bright. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Buchanan, James
1860 - Two sheets, bound at the left margin with a red ribbon, covered by a wax seal. (1) 16 in. x 9 ¾ in. This document certifies that a certain parcel of land near Fort Des Moines Iowa which had been deposited to the favor of Amos P. Granger for his service in the militia during the war of 1812 had been assigned to Harriet Gilman. Some of the wording is printed (boiler-plate) and some of it is handwritten. The signature of President James Buchanan by a secretary (probably J. A. B. Leonard) appears. Recording information and dates also appear. (2) 7 ½ in. x 9 ¾ in. Headed "General Land Office." Dated September 19, 1867, this document certifies that the annexed document (described above) "is a true and literal exemplification from the Patents records of this Office." The documents have been folded to 4 in. x 9 ¾ in. The documents show chips and tears along the folds. Age-related tanning. (3) Accompanying the above is a well-worn, torn 4 ½ in. x 6 ½ in. sheet with appears to be information regarding the recording of a document in 1868 in a land office in Worth, Iowa. It shows recording fees of ninety cents and fifteen cents; a portion along the right side is present but detached. This may or may not be a related to the documents in (1) and (2) above.

SIMMONDS, Peter Lund.
franklin's remains discovered.SIMMONDS, Peter Lund. The Arctic Regions and Polar Discoveries During the Nineteenth Century: With the Discoveries Made by Captain McClintock as to the Fate of the Franklin Expedition. London, Routledge, Warne, and Routledge. 1860.Small 8vo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered and ornamented in gilt; pp. [3, advertisements], xi, 294, 6, [4, advertisements]; large folding lithographic map with the location of Franklin's remains marked in red, map and title with a few minor spots and one repaired tear, otherwise a very good copy; contemporary school prize bookplate inside front cover. This is the first edition of this popular history of Arctic exploration to contain the report of McClintock's expedition and discovery of the remains of Franklin's expedition; therefore very rare. This ninth edition of Simmonds' book has a preface dated November 24, 1859 (two months after McClintock's return from the Arctic), and on pages 241 to the end of the volume is an account of the Franklin search expedition and their findings. Simmonds was a writer on the sciences and manufacturing and a well-connected journalist, who managed to get news of importance almost immediately. The arrival of McClintock's expedition and their findings must have instigated to rewrite parts of the Arctic Regions and Polar Discoveries, a book which had appeared first in 1851, focussing on Franklin's fate.#2096820

PARSONS, C[harles].
Endicott & Co. New York -70s 1860 - Lithograph printed in colour (image 50 x 84 cm; sheet 63 x 94,5 cm) after a drawing by Parsons; small tear in right margin, anciently laid-down but in fine condition. Through Endicott's studio he worked directly for the famous firm of Currier & Ives, and deserves credit for many of the best marine lithographs ever produced. Before he left for Harper's he was made a full partner and it was undoubtedly his marines which earned him the position and drew the most public attention. He chose to revisit nautical subjects when he returned to watercolours and lithography in retirement from Harper's. Parsons was an associate member of the National Academy of Design and a member of the New York Watercolor Society. The United State Mail Steamer Fulton, commanded by James A. Wotton, travelled in the 1850s and 1860s across the Atlantic Ocean, from Le Havre to New York through Southampton to deliver passengers and mails to the United States Quartermaster. Numerous reports about her voyages were published in The New York Times in the 1860s. An advertisement from the 15th March 1856 quoted the price of passage for First Cabin at $130 and for Second Cabin at $75. [A … [Click Below for Full Description]
